Eddie Hunter isn't stuck in the game Light Online, but if he wants to keep his job, he needs to stay there. It's not a hardship for him as he increasingly believes that his in-game life is far preferable to his out of game life.

Working on a hidden development quest that he discovered by accident has him becoming more and more entrepreneurial even while running his own inn, but between him and his party, the Meadowlands is rapidly developing.

The goblins from the Forest of Fools have noticed the Meadowlands growing stronger as well, and start attacking out of the forest. They seem to be growing stronger as the Meadowlands do. The Meadowlands themselves are changing also, offering more challenges and rewards, as Eddie completes more of his quests.

Eddie finally decides that he can't keep everything going on his own. Between running an inn, building the things necessary for his quest, adventuring, and more, he's getting to the point where important things are slipping his mind. When a dungeon is discovered in the Meadowlands, where there was never one before, he gives in and relegates himself to an assistant in running his own inn so that he and his party can test themselves against it in an attempt to grow their own power levels.

Tom Larcombe was introduced to fantasy books at a young age. Those that were aimed more at children hooked him in, but not well enough for him to remember their names at this point in his life. Their draw led him to books aimed more for the adult reader and so he found himself, at around age eight, starting in on the Steven R Donaldson 'Thomas Covenant' series and the Hobbit, followed shortly thereafter by The Lord of the Rings books.

His reading tastes have never looked back, although they have broadened to include science fiction and the occasional non-fiction book.

He lives in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains with his wife, two daughters, three cats, and a variable number of chickens.

This is a LitRPG series that builds plot and character over time. Read in order.

So this is a lot like the first. Only the author added an evil military antagonist organization and gave them all the power. It was a deeply silly setup. They want to learn to use the technology to control "constructs" and so they hack a way to control NPC goblins to attack peaceful player communities. There is so much stupid in that plot starting with the fact the entire game is "controlling constructs".

And it's not helping that the bad guys read like every stereotype anti-military people seem convinced every soldier exemplifies. You know, baby-killers and testosterone-poisoned bullies who get their kicks with wanton violence. Add unfettered power over the world and system and it broke what little engagement I had. One star and ugh.

Meh

The supposed military unit is....bad. I cannot understand their motivations regarding any of their actions. They make up a fair portion of this book, and seem entirely unnecessary. The author seems to have no idea how a team of people work together outside of MMOs.

I'll just stop reviewing here, before I start ranting.

Really fun developing series

I'm really impressed with how well the author has meshed a few different Gamelit genres together in this book. It was done really well and in a very organic way.

Very entertaining book.

That isn't to say that there are no issues, mainly stemming from how the primary conflict is handled, but it's not enough of a problem to hurt the plot and really prepares the next stage in the story telling.

Definitely will be picking up book 3 in the series. (Planned for 5 books I believe)

If you are checking out the review for book two, odds are you have read book one already. If you enjoyed book one, you will like this one as well.

It continues the unique mixture of GameLit (which is still relatively new in and or itself) paired with the life-sim so unique to games like Stardew Valley and Harvest Moon. Those games roughly equals parts about improving the world around you, as well as your character self. This is still in that vein.

The plot is a direct continuation and expansion of the first story arc. The world has become deeper and more complex. I love this style of continued world building. The small pieces buildings slowly to a larger, over-arcing, event to occur at a later date.

Again there climax is not marked by a massive battle (as in so many fiction books, GameLit and beyond). I found this still novel and refreshing. It did, however, have enough action to keep me interested beyond the pure sim aspects of it.

I am purposefully vague on the details because I hate spoilers and I know most of you do as well.

I loved it. A lot. And not nearly as surprised about loving it as I was with the original book, which I had walked blind into. I am already exited for the proposed book three that was mentioned in the author's notes after the primary book. I understand the author suggested on reddit that he had plans for five books in the series. These cannot come soon enough.

Good sequel and follow up to the first book with most of what I liked in the first book continuing into this.

However there was an issue it seemed with one of the plots that just didn’t pan out within expectations although it could prove to amount to something in the next book.

7.5/10

I have to admit, I was skeptical of this book. I saw that it had good reviews and it kept being suggested to me by the almighty amazon algorithms. After I saw book 2 was out, I decided to just give it a try since I read very fast. I am glad I did.

You have to get past the setup, which requires a bit of suspension of disbelief. Sure, the circumstances are a little weird, and what they have the MC doing makes no sense(although it explains it later on in the book, so I am happy there) However, a few chapters into the book I became addicted.

Book 1 has a little combat, but it focuses on crafting, settlement building, and community. Normally I hate last one, but it is done well in this book.

Book 2 has more of the same, but also has a bit more combat in it.

One thing I hate about most litrpgs is how the MC is always just given everything without trying. They start off and are given rare legendary items that imbalance the game from the very first "hidden" cache the run across at level 1. They then spend the entire game fighting against mobs and people hundreds of levels above them in order to keep things slightly interesting. This book does none of this. He succeeds because of his own decisions, not because he has plot armor.

The writing is very well done, and each person has their own unique personality.

If I had to complain about anything, it is that the first few chapters of book 1 are not the best and are not engaging.

My rating system:
1 star: Utter Trash
2 star: Did not finish
3 star: Ok book, but will not next in series.
4 star: Good book, will read next in series
5 star: Amazing book, can't wait till next book is out!

Why did you read this book?
I wanted to read a laid-back, slice-of-life, lit-rpg. Also, a friend suggested it.

What format did you read this book in?
Listened to the audiobook on Audible.

Is this an educational book or a book for entertainment?
I read this book for pure entertainment purposes.

What genres do you think this book belongs to?
Fantasy, Fiction, Romance, Science Fiction

What was your favorite part of the book?
My favorite part was the base-building aspect of the town. I wish they had done more of that and fought less.

Who would you suggest this book to?
Anyone who wants to read a light drama LitRPG story with some base-building aspects.

What is your general opinion/ rating of this book?
I didn’t like this book as much as the first one. I felt like this one dragged on, and the combat was a bit boring. I liked the crafting system. I wish there was more focus on developing the town than fighting goblins or a dungeon. Overall, this book was alright. I hope the next one is a bit better.

Any trigger warnings?
Mental Health: PTSD, Panic Attacks, Trauma, Non-consent behavior
Violence and Death: Death, Animal Death, Mass Death, Murder, Described Blood, Graphic Violence, Doxing
Other: Bullying

This book was promising and would have had a higher score, if not for the anticlimactic ending.

I quite liked the building/crafting elements, although I would have preferred if the MC could keep his ideas in his mind for longer than a few minutes and organize things better.

The characters were alright, a bit one-note, but I didn't mind it that much. I only had problems with the MC's girlfriend since she became one of those shrill harpies that peck at their boyfriend if he does anything they don't like. Don't know why he doesn't stand up for himself more instead of just going "Yes, dear" and putting up with it. No matter how good the lay is, it's not worth the constant bitching. This has become sort of a trope in LitRPGs and it's not one I like.

in regards to the ending, things seemed like they would escalate to a full-blown raid and a massive battle, and then just sort of petered out due to the meddling of the AI. A literal Deus ex machina solved most of the problems and that sucked.

I'll keep reading to see if things stay on this path, or if the author stops sparing the MC.

Ummm... Not sure why the plotline unraveled

For most of this book, the plot was pretty clear; craft/grow the business or hamlet and help people. There was a cool, random twist in the real life portion of the book that was unique.

And then... The story was kind of tossed into left field with the author saying Meh! What I mean by this is the secret military research (isn't there's always some) decided to completely F' over The Meadows. They gathered an insane army to defeat/wipe out The Meadows and then the storyline just stopped. No explanation. One has to assume what probably happened, but the author was like meh, I don't feel like explaining my actions.

Hate Becky. She was just a horrible human being. The author is forcing the group to add her to the main group; she sort of gets better later, but honestly the main characters are far better people than me as I would not have trusted her at all.

Anyway, have fun reading the slower adventure life of an inn keeper and his friends!!

I'm really liking this series. Of course, I do seem to be partial to books with building in them, and this book certainly has it's fair share of that, but there's more to it as well, and I'm pretty sure most LitRPG fans will like this story, it's well done, and there aren't any overpowered characters, just your average people doing what they can to make things better for everyone, as well as a bunch that seems hell bent on screwing it up for everyone else. So far, unexpected events are keeping things in check, but there are other books planned for the series, so who knows how it will turn out. I'd recommend adding this one to your want to read shelf if you're even a little bit of an LitRPG fan, it's definitely a story worth reading.

Really enjoyed the first book. This one was equally enjoyable!

4.5/5 stars! I was hooked by the first book, Light Online: Farmer. Tom Larcombe has taken a bit of a different approach, focusing on the development of a hamlet through the actions of Eddie Hunter, a ranger motivated by entrepreneurial ideas. In this book we get to experience the development of the hamlet, it's growing number of citizens, Eddie Hunter & crew. Plus, we get to learn more of the plot the goddess Freyja is uncovering as well as meet a few new characters. It was a fun and exciting read. To be honest, I read both books in a few days (3, i think) and couldn't put them down. Now, what to read until book 3 is released...

Fun read, but so many loose ends

First up: I love the gameworld here, and Tom has made a great story concept of building up and development of the first player owned land.

My main gripe is for both this book and the first, he constantly left loose ends and hanging plot. Some of them are still unresolved from the first. When it's just a few, it's leaving areas for the story to expand. But when it's this many, the story doesn't seem as self contained, and only half finished until the next book comes out. You are left finishing the book with more questions than you started, but not philosophical ones, just "why did X do that?", "What will happen about X thing mentioned in book one that seems to be forgotten about that was important at the time and not resolved"?

Alert

I hate trying to write reviews because there are really only pass/fail results for me. Did I make it all the way through? Yes? 5 stars. No? There would be nothing here to read. In all fairness, if an author holds my attention from page one to the end, they’ve done their job. Anything less than 5 stars is petty criticism from someone incapable of even doing the job let alone doing a better one.

So in respect for the author and their work, I am going to start pasting this along with a generic review I found somewhere. “This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”

Cheers

Hidden gem

I had been hunting around for litRPGs for quite awhile, but was having a hard time finding more series worth reading. This one undoubtedly fit, my only complaint is that he only has plans for around 5 right now, and that only 2 are out. Series is great, big focus on the building, no one is op, combat is interesting and well enough explained that it doesn't just seem haphazardly thrown together, but isn't super focused to the point of showing blow for blow damage, as it would just be overwhelming in any battle not one on one, which is the main combat, it's true rpg style, most combat is teams taking on swarms of mobs.

Loved the story but the author kept repeating entire sections. For example, the main protagonist would relay information to someone, and then in the next page/chapter, he repeats it again. I'm not sure if the author is using copy and paste to extend his word count but it became annoying. Also, things would be added and spoken about in the book that was never mentioned before but written in a way that expects the reader to have come across it before. I like the story so I will keep reading the series.

Really Awesome Series!

The light online series. Is the first builder style LitRPG I have read. This series as my choice to try out this style of fiction. Really turned out to be a great pick. As the author Tom Larcombe has a wicked sense of humor. I really love the snarky comments that the game occasionally makes. When one of the players Eddie in particular. Does something it either dislikes or thinks in appropriate for that class of character. Plus he is a great story teller.

i have already downloaded the next to continue but i had others in front of it.... i still want the action of fights and such but this has some very interesting curve balls floating around in it. i will continue to read but i dropped a star only cause of the slower pace this series has compared to others i enjoy. i guess i should like that cause then i can put the book down and do work around the house like i should be doing normally verses reading 15hours in a day... so my wife would give this series 6 stars...

Great sequel

Great follow-up. More adventuring, town building, and character development. Wasn't sold on the motivation for the villains, didn't make sense until the very end. Stick with it. The MC and friends are a bit flatter as the "screen" time was a bit more split up. If I could ask for something in book 3 it would be just to stick close to developing the Meadowlands and both the players and NPCs to give them a bit more depth. Will read regardless. Great series.

A different LitRPG

I’m liking this series so far. It’s a different view on what I think is the classic LitRPG, focusing on progression in the overall game mechanics and crafting, though he does some adventure as well.
I’d dock him a half star if they let me, because I’m adverse to using the f* word, so parents beware. He only does it a few times, though.
Read this one after the first, so you don’t get confused about what’s going on.

LITRPG at its finest

I love this series. Characters are fantastic and fully fleshed out. The plot is interesting and fully thought out. The writing style is perfect for a LITRPG novel, with a nice balance between action and adventure, character development, magic and skill progression and mechanics. Very much worth the read. I am moving on to this authors 'Crow Hill' series until the next book in this one comes out.

Bland

Originally this series seemed like a new take on an old idea, but with the second book it has become bland. The building aspect is played out, not that it happens but the time devoted to the details. The background with the AIs feels like setup material and not story arc. You shouldn't have a prologue as your second in a series. Three stars for potential but the next one had best step it up.

Lots of fun, still a little slow.

It's still a lot of fun to read, and the characters are still very well written and realistic, but there's a line between the characters having so much to do that they forget some and having your readers do the same. Unfortunately, with the detail of the writing and number of 'side quests' and sidetracks, this book ends up a little confusing. Nothing too important, but it just held the book back a little, especially compared to the first.

The second book in this series tracks our MC as he stumbles unto a development quest for this backwater server region where strange things seems to happen.

With resident AI's working outside the primary directive, our hero blessed by Freya and he creates an inn to help players who have logged in while testing out long term immersive play.

An interesting flow of plots and one begins to wonder what would happen if a super smart AI jumps out of the virtual world into real life?

I'm enjoying this series, and inwardly labeling it the sweet tooth of LitRPG. It goes down like good candy, the kind that personally appeals, not sugary junk. It is really focused on world building, character progression, crafting, community, with a reasonable amount of "battling" but not too much, which is the norm for most LitRPG. The character is a decent human being, without an over inflated ego, which is a massive deviation from the genre. Well-done.

Notes:

Books 1 & 2 are Currently on Audible Plus

I had read half of the ebook a long time ago. 😆 When I saw the audiobook on Audible+, "Yay! Let's finish the book!"

If you're looking for a chill, settlement building LitRPG, the first two books of Light Online will hit the spot. Plot line may move towards another path in the next book. More into defending settlement & dealing with external conflicts.

I love this series

He definitely had a better editor this t around. I like the characters and the setting. He had more to work with because he didn't have to set anything up like the first book. The I rd thing that made me sad was he said there would ONLY be five books in the series. At this pace I could 20. Good job

Mixed feelings

I wish I could give this 3.5 stars. On one hand there is really nothing about this book that stands out. Nothing super annoying but also nothing special either. On the other hand I am a sucker for city building. Just wish there was more too it than just construction. Wish it were more magical.

Good book.

I like the world and his progression scheme. Very good example of the genre. I appreciate that he does not go in for the harem building that is a horrible part of a lot of the genre. Although i like the book i would really like some setbacks for the main character. A little drama would help drive the story and make it more realistic.

Is a decent, but meh read

Starts off really well written, but it starts to stagnate about 25% through the book, same old things over and over again. It seems like the author has forgotten the purpose of why Eddie is in the pod in the first place, not continuity with the plot of the story!!

Not bad

Was a fun read. A Very development, anno styled story. I mostly enjoyed the characters. The lot felt... off a time or two. The climax wasn’t very large but the book was interesting enough ill pick up book 3 and keep with the series.
Good editing with very minor typos (a few per page). Very readable.
