Sometimes true love can be deceptive… Kate’s happily ever after is cut short, after a new arrival from an alternate dimension appears. A sexy woman with the power to kill by touch, Kate decides newcomer Mara is best kept under a watchful eye. Jay seems to act differently, but Kate chalks it up to familiarity in their relationship. One thing she becomes increasingly aware of as time passes—he’s pushing her away while growing closer to Mara. Steve’s feelings for Kate haven’t changed, and he’s there for her when Jay’s behavior crosses a line. Can Kate figure out what’s going on with Jay? Will she be able to salvage her relationship with him, or will she find happiness in the arms of another man? Unified Part 1 is the next installment of the ongoing Modified saga, in which Kate and her team of modified cohorts learn to work together. With new characters and an unexpected twist, fans of the Modified series will love this next captivating chapter! Though this installment is longer than the Modified volumes, this book is still considered to be a serial. As such, you should read Modified Box set or all of the individual Modified volumes before starting this book. Reader Discretion is If you are offended by strong language or sexual situations, for the love of God don't buy this book.
Originally a Jersey girl, sunny Texas is where I now call home, in a town way up north in the panhandle called Wellington. Along with the man of my dreams, I have two children: a rambunctious little girl and a sweet but vocal little boy. Three cats, three dogs and an inordinate amount of pet hair complete my household. For fun I like to read YA, horror, and existentialist fiction, as well as watch cartoons, movies, and sometimes even cartoon movies. I try not to take anything in life too seriously and I tend to smile often.
Modified is a superhero novel without the costumed heroes. The big bad guy—Derrick—is inflicting people with superpowers which he then apparently intends to use to control the planet. Powered individuals who don’t cooperate with his plans are used to develop a serum which temporarily gives others their powers. Our heroes are trying to stop him from doing this.
So the overall plot is quite respectable, but the more narrow plot of Unified Part I is injured by the fact that it only works if all of the heroes are really, really, dumb. When every character in the story notices that one of them is acting totally out of character but it doesn’t occur to any of these superpowered individuals that perhaps a shape changer has replaced him, that’s really hard to accept. Afterall, as the reader, I figured out what had happened during the first encounter with the doppelganger. The substitution wasn’t cleverly hidden and frankly that broke the suspension of disbelief that is necessary for any story to work.
I think that the overall situation in this series is worth exploring. Unfortunately, this book only sets the stage for that over arching plot.
I received this book free from Audio Book Boom in exchange for an honest review.
.Warning: Sexual Situations and Strong Langage. That said this novel is a joy to read. Now first off I want to say the author says straight up this is a serialized story. You need to think of it like a television series. Each novel fun to read to see where our characters are at and what happens to them but don’t expect and ending, just like your favoeite TV show we have to wait for the next novel to see what happens. There is not an ending in this book, so not expect that and you will be just fine. For this reason it is important that you read the novel in order. Ok all that said expect to have a good read in this novel I did. Kate gets a visit from Alex, the cop she nearly killed, he is thinking she has some kind of power and he is trying to figure out just what it is. He needs Kate help some unusual cases that in involves some modified people. Kate needs the job she is broke. In order to the job, she has to trust him her secret. A series of cyber-attacks occurs, and the hacker call out Kate as the one who captured Derek. Therefore, Kate is being hunted. Kate asks Jay to help her capture the hacker. Everything is to complicated but that is what makes the read so much fun. Cannot wait for the next read to see what happens next. I have enjoyed this read but you are going to need to read it in order as the author has suggested. It is not a standalone novel. I highly recommend this novel. I received an advance reader copy of this novel and these are my honest opinions.
Our team has been through several trials and managed to come out on top. Now they are learning a new lesson and it might be even more difficult.
This is book one of the second story arc/series. While it is not necessary to have read the first series, it will add to your understanding of this one.
This is a science fiction story with a superhero theme. The story is well written and easy to read, picking up a bit after the previous story arc. The story packs in some excellent characters that fun, sarcastic and rather quirky. To say they have some issues is an understatement, but it is all done with a sense of humor that makes it fun instead of angsty. We also get a fair amount of steam along the way, which is an unexpected bonus. Overall, this was a great start to a second story line and I am happy to be aboard for this new ride.
Highly recommended.

Just like dystopian worlds rarely offer their inhabitants a happy existence, in Part 1of Unified, Kate’s world *spoiler* goes on a downward trajectory. It’s really not much of a *spoiler* to say that Derek is involved, but so are other new characters. And like previous books we meet new friends, new enemies, and *spoiler* lose some as well. The real trick as always is trying to figure out who’s who before Kate or someone she cares about winds up dead.
Just like in all the previous books I was completely caught up in everything that was going on, worried about what terrible thing Doucheweasel Derek would come up with next and what the gang can do to stop him. The book does end on a cliffhanger (which is kind of obvious by the ’Part 1’ designation), and left me hoping for not only a happy ending, but a RH as well.

Another great listen by Kat Stiles. I am so addicted to this series, these characters and this story line. I can't wait to see what could possibly happen next! The narration is great - the accents are incredible and really bring these characters to life. Speaking of characters - WOW I love how these band of misfits come together in their friendships and no so friendly friendships. I love how each have Kate's wellbeing at the forefront and always seem to have her back. The ending has me completely at Stiles' mercy...I must know more!!!
This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review. *this review is based on the audio version of this read
Sex,Superpowers, Sex, Magic, and umm Sex...What more does a book need, oh yeah a storyline, Yup it has that too, but I;m not disclosing it. How would you handle finding out you were modified against your will. That you have powers you didn't ask for..Follow this group as they try to figure it out. Do not buy this book if language and sex offend you as it contains plenty of both. Those of you not bothered should enjoy book.

Kate, Jay, Steve, and his daughter Lillian, Violet, Zoe, Vlad, and Lucas are living in a mansion with housekeeping and kitchen staff. They are trying to find a way to stop Derek and his mad plans. After all, he is the one who injected the serum that caused them all to be Modified! Part 1 contains romance and heartache, death and loss, with a cliffhanger for an ending. Highly recommended.

This ADULT, near-future paranormal science fiction series is BEST READ IN SERIES ORDER with NO SKIPPING BOOKS. This particular episode is set mostly in New Jersey in a mansion on the Shore in late summer and can be finished in an afternoon. I had an ARC via Booksprout and this voluntary review is my own opinion.
