WWCSD (What Would Captain Starblast Do?)...

CANDY CORN (Short Sharp Shocks! Book #25) by Kevin M. Folliard

No spoilers. 4 stars. It was Halloween night, and 13 year old Blake was out in costume trick-or-treating...

When...

He noticed a house tucked away at the end of the forest littered with autumn leaves on its lawn...

He was almost finished trick-or-treating...

When he saw the flickering light of a jack-o-lantern outside the gates of the house...

The mail slot read: The Cornfields...

Blake walked up the stoop and rang the doorbell...

A 40ish woman dressed as a candy corn opened the door holding a bowl of candy. She saw Blake and said: Oh my! You look just like him!...

Blake was dressed as his hero, intergalactic adventurer, Captain Starblast. Blake filmed his own episodes after the series ended...

Mrs Cornfield told Blake that her husband Carl wrote a few of the original episodes before filling Blake's bag with candy corn...

She asked Blake to pop into the living room to show Carl his costume. Blake noticed several pictures of young boys on the entry console...

In the living room, in front of a flickering TV was burly Carl dressed as a zombie couch potato with a fake scar across his bald head...

Mrs Cornfield (Candy) said Carl had a box of Captain Starblast memorabilia in the basement...

Come on down, she said to Blake as she descended the stairs to the basement, which was decorated for Halloween as a dungeon...

The Cornfields had gone all out...

There were monsters and skeletons at the bar, a fog machine, a white screen, and a projector...

And liquor everywhere...

While Candy searched for the posters and memorabilia, Blake noticed many pictures of 12 or 13 year old boys on the bartop...

He felt a chill run down his spine...

Blake dropped his bag of candy and ran for the basement steps, but the next thing he knew, he was chained by his neck to the wall...

He panicked and knew he was in real trouble, but he calmed himself and said: What would Captain Starblast do in this situation?

This was an excellent, if predictable, short story. I like this SHORT SHARP SHOCKS series and have been reading them for years. Like most people, I've been busy getting ready for the holidays, and these stories are good, short breaks from all the hustle and bustle.

Creepy!

What a fun Halloween read! The perfect bite sized treat with lots of tricks and twists. I loved how the author portrayed Candy, sweet as pie and crazy as a loon.
I don't want to say too much and give things away so I'll end this review with you really need to add this to your Halloween TBR!
