Expertly written. I could not put this book down. I have read all of H A Culley’s books and have never been disappointed. Eagerly await the next in series of Earls of Northumbria. I would recommend this series for anyone who wants a gritty grimy real read on the dark ages that rings true Real page Turner. Hooked from the start. The whole series of the books are a great read A very exciting story, but then again I always expect that from this great author Great book, historically accurate and well written
Book Description:
In eleventh century England there are two ways to resolve a killing: the payment of weregeld to the family of the dead or the declaration of a blood feud where a life for a life is the only acceptable payment.Aldred and Eadulf, the sons of Uhtred of Bebbanburg, succeed in killing one of their father’s assassins, but his accomplice thinks himself safe until one night Aldred lures him into a trap. The ensuing blood feud will continue for over half a century. It’s a violent age and, with King Cnut trying to govern Denmark and Norway as well as England, Aldred and Eadulf must keep their lands safe from marauding Scots, Norsemen and Cumbrians without help from the rest of England. At the same time the brothers’ safety is constantly threatened by the ongoing feud. This enthralling tale about life, politics and warfare in the time immediately before the Norman Conquest is a must for lovers of this period in history.
H.A. Culley served in the Army for twenty four years during which time he had a variety of unusual jobs. These included commanding an Arab unit in the desert for three years and a tour as the military attaché in Beirut in the late seventies. After leaving the Army he became the business manager of a large independent school for twenty years before moving into marketing and fundraising. He has also been involved in two major historical projects and now works for an educational charity. He has given talks on historical subjects for several years and the research involved provided his inspiration for writing historical fiction. He has three adult children and lives near Holy Island in Northumberland with his wife and two Bernese Mountain Dogs.
What is of interest is the details of geography of the area and its history . Where this part of the English History from the Roman times til the coming of the Norman’s ; it’s often hard to understand what happened to the Celtic people’s . This story gives a plausible understanding of a slowly and continueous lose of control and power of Celtic leadership. The Celtic may never have left but blended in with the Anglo Saxon new leaders and power by changing dress, customs and language to survive !
