She is a Japanese manga artist known for creating The Magic Touch and Oresama Teacher which have both been serialized on the Hana to Yume magazine. Tsubaki began drawing manga in her first year of high school. She was soon selected to be in the top 10 of Hana to Yume Mangaka Course, and subsequently won the Big Challenge contest.
This volume was great ! The couples are actually advancing, somehow ?? Kashima and Hori were adorable in this one lol And Seo and Waka too even though I really think they're the most chaotic stupid of all of them, dear God
Nozaki and his hapless assistants are back at it and it’s certainly business as usual. While some of the relationships may have advanced, that doesn’t mean they’re getting anywhere. Between boobs and butts, surprising doll making turns, tsunderes, and popularity contests, there’s something for everybody! Provided you don’t have intercostal neuralgia, of course.
Oh yes, my favourite four koma gag manga returns and while it may never reach its highest highs ever again, it sure makes its best attempt in ages. There are some true classics in this one.
The opening story involves a relay novel being written between Nozaki, Hori, Waka, and Sakura and is an absolute gold mine of ignoring stranger danger and how any collaborative effort easily falls apart when people of wildly varying skill levels try working together.
This one gets the first laugh out loud moment for me, when Sakura affects a shocking genre change, capped off with her and Nozaki taking over the relay themselves to predictable results. I love Sakura constantly being unable to get through to Nozaki and then, on the rare occasions she might, being so wrapped up in the nonsense going on that she outright ignores the opportunity.
Seo and Waka get a lot of page time as well, which is a lot of fun now that their dynamic has shifted and Seo is trying very hard, in her way, to get Waka to date her. The tsundere chapter is okay, but the one where Nozaki makes a Waka practice doll for Seo to practice being nice to is hilarious, especially when Hori starts testing it for sympathetic magic.
The tanuki also make a return in their most disturbing appearance yet.
The final two chapters feature Sakura and Nozaki at their best, as a confession game lets us see what Nozaki truly wants in a guy and then Sakura tries to help him with his one-shot by being cool and aloof, which she is not. The ending to this is absolutely adorable, as a last minute art addition by Mikoshiba forces him to confront some things. Maybe.
The real star, however, is the character popularity poll for Nozaki’s manga. I think this might be the funniest thing since Mikoshiba and Nozaki played the visual novel many volumes ago - I was dying from start to finish.
Nozaki is flummoxed by both the results of the poll and his readership’s assessment of his characters, so in typical fashion he sets out to alter the results to his tastes. The joke density in this one section is off the charts and when we see the changes he’s putting in his work I was almost in tears. Nozaki’s manga asides within this manga are always hilarious, always.
4.5 stars, but as you may have guessed, there’s a clear reason for me to go to a full five. It’s not quite as good as the first volumes, but it very nearly is and that’s impressive work. A real treat to spend time with this cast again, as usual.
This volume had many shorter, chapter long stories. Suzuki wants to know how Nozaki and Hori met and it was writing serial fiction where they write the same story in a notebook. The group wants to try it, but the results are surprising. Only Mikoshiba knows how to actually write.
Mikoshiba teaches Yukari to write sexy manga as she has been asked to write for adults, which causes misunderstandings among her friends. Seo reads manga to be able to understand why Wakamatsu doesn’t believe her feelings. Nozaki makes her a Waka doll, which doesn’t quite work as intended. Hori states that he really likes Kashima, and keeps saying it so much, to everyone, that Kashima’s friend puts a curse on him. He decides never to tell Kashima that he likes her, as he’s only been saying it to make her participate in the drama club in the first place.
Nozaki tries to make Suzuki to win the favourite character competition among the characters of his manga, but fails. His little brother and Kashima’s little sister bond over judo, sort of. Sakura’s class competes who can make the best confession to a boy. She makes Nozaki participate too, and he takes a very mangaka approach to it. Finally, Nozaki writes a one shot manga and uses Sakura as a model for cool girl. That too turns out to have unexpected results. All in all, an eventful volume.
A couple of the stories make me feel that the author's stretching to find a hook, and there's only so many comedy double-takes I can stand before everything just mushes into homogeneity. I've forgotten half of the characters and situations between the previous volume and this one (Kashima has a sister? most of the couples have hooked up, to some extent?), but it doesn't really matter.
Between the first few volumes of Oresama Teacher, and twelve volumes of this, I've read over 15 volumes of Tsubaki's manga. Unfortunately, I don't think her sense of humor and mine are aligned. I'd probably have drifted away from this manga if I'd been buying it myself, and might end up doing so anyhow, even though someone else is footing the bill.
I laughed quite a few times in this one, and there was also some cute moments. Really feels like all the pairings are making some progress / relationships are changing. Kashima's little sister Rei and Mayu my latest ship. xD
Reread: Do I smell relationship progression, Nozaki? *evil smile*

This series just always makes me smile. Are there a few things that I disagree with and make me cringe? Yes. But so much of this series is just pure, situational comedy, so I can forgive the other aspects.
Re-Read: July 2024 I once again was very much in need of a book that would make me happy, and this hit the spot! It was really engaging and I was audibly laughing the entire time I was reading.
Original Review This was the perfect thing to read as a break from the more intense/depressing book I've got on the go. This was such a funny volume!!! I can't wait to read the next one.
3.75. I didn’t laugh quite as much at this one as I have at past installments. The Hori “I like you” schtick was not great, but I did like Seo and her Waka doll and Rei trying to chat up Mayu. Overall, a mixed bag. But still one of the best for lifting my mood.
Hori is a hypocrite with no sense of stranger danger when it comes to himself. But really, none of the characters have any sense of self preservation tbh.
New lore just dropped: if you meet someone with the same name as you, you die.
Yeahhh I really don’t like the aftermath of the Hori/Kashima hypnosis plotline. Their relationship has somehow turned more violent and it’s starting to not be funny.
Not the Wakamatsu doll…
“‘I’ll be the Jack to your beanstalk’” 😵 Worst pickup line. Please never again.
Hori finally admitting his feelings for Kashima, only to just “get used to it” and end up not treating her any differently. Perfect way to move the relationship forward while also having their dynamic not change at all. Well played, Tsubaki…
Imagining a valley girl accent but with Nozak’s deep voice…
I love the very realistic representation of Nozaki as an artist who can only draw very specific things. I feel that so hard. But really, Nozaki, you can’t draw a thermos with the lid off?
Getting your characters kidnapped because you don’t want to draw a party scene hhhhhh
Omong-omong, aku enggak begitu paham soal target usia pembaca.
Kind of a disappointment... since some of the characters' romantic progress can't resolve, they're all in a weird holding pattern. My fave parts ended up being the ones with bit characters when it's usually the other way around. Just sort of low energy. Hopefully, the next volume brings some kind of school event or conflict to spice things up.
Cukup oke sebenernya Si kashima seperti biasanya tingkahnya aneh2 , dia jadi overhype sama tindakan Hori yg dan dikit2 ngira hori suka dia 😂😂😂 Yang adegan mengarang berantai sumpah random banget kocak 🤣 tapi Nozaki ini apa gak ada tamda2 punya ketertarikan kah sm Chiyo, kasihan tuh bocil jadi makin jadi2 dia 😂
Selalu kocak. Izumi Tsubaki sensei selalu berhasil mengalirkan kesalahpahaman sederhana ala2 remaja menjadi banyolan yag luar biasa. Selalu menraik menyimak hubungan antar karakter tanpa perlu tergesa-gesa.
I really enjoyed this volume. Our main couples are experiencing actual progress (maybe?), and I loved the chapter where Sakura’a class was having a fake love confession contest. Nozaki winning was hilarious, especially with how into his character he became.
This continues to be a complicated but funny relationships manga. Kashima and Hori have gotten weird. There are some fun and different episodes, like the popularity contest in Nozaki's manga. Overall, delightful.
Absolutely loved this volume!!! I always find myself laughing while reading "Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun," but I was constantly laughing out loud while reading volume 12!!! It was so light-hearted and funny! The perfect combination!
