Summer at the Country Practice

Rate this book

The sun is shining on Bramblewick, the little village on the North York Moors.

At Bramblewick Primary School the teachers are preparing for their much-needed break, and Izzy and Ash are busy making wedding plans.

But for their friend and colleague, Jackson Wade, the long summer holiday isn't so welcome. He's dreading being alone and is already wondering what he's going to do with himself until school starts again.

For Dr Abbie Sawdon, the end of term brings a different problem. She's a single mum with a busy job and three young children to care for. Not only that but she's just moved into The Gables, a large, rather neglected house on the edge of the village. Her teenage daughter hates it, Abbie's got no time to work on it, and she's beginning to wonder if moving to Bramblewick was such a good idea after all.

After mutual friends set Abbie and Jackson up on a blind date, both are adamant that the experience will never be repeated. It's painfully obvious that they have nothing in common, and Abbie is insulted by Jackson's less-than-tactful comments regarding her children and home.

But Jackson might just be the answer to Abbie's problems and, when things reach crisis point at The Gables, she has no choice but to accept his offer of help.

A long and difficult summer lies ahead of them as they negotiate house renovations, boisterous children, lively dogs and a moody teenager. But it's not all bad, as a christening, an engagement party and a trip to the seaside bring some welcome relief from work. And, as the weeks go by, Jackson and Abbie begin to realise that it's not just the house that's in need of tender loving care.

But do some wounds cut too deep to ever heal?

I absolutely love Sharon Booth's Bramblewick series. Like all the books, we get to catch up on what's happening for the other villagers who've been the focus of previous books, this time the spotlight is on Abbie and Jackson.
Abbie is the new doctor and may have taken on more than she can handle with a new job, a move, and a big house in need of major renovation, much to her eldest daughter's disgust. When friends set her up on a blind date with school teacher, Jackson, romance is the last thing on her mind.
If Jackson could have wriggled out of the date, he would have done, as he's not on the market for love either. He can't imagine what his friends were thinking of, setting him up with Abbie, because she represents everything that makes him squirm.
When he volunteers to help renovate her house, could Abbie's problems have just increased?

I loved this story. Although each of the books in the series features a love story, all of them are completely different. Sharon Booth creates very believable characters who I can't help rooting for, hoping they'll find their happy ever after. Her writing oozes warmth and the action moves forward, making it hard not to keep dipping into a new chapter when I know it's really time for bed!

Looking forward to the next instalment already.

Wow. Five stars isn't enough for this book. The Bramblewick series just gets better and better with each instalment.
Abbie and Jackson's story was dealt with so well. Two complex issues in one story but absolutely unputdownable!!

I loved every book in this series and the only reason I didn't write a review about each one was I was too keen to dive straight into the next book. You will not be disappointed if you dive in and read this beautiful series

Dr Abbie Sawdon has moved to Bramblewick to work in the country medical practice. She hopes her three children will enjoy the freedom of living in the Yorkshire countryside and that there will be less stress for herself. Her son has Jackson Wade as a teacher. The two are determined to not enjoy it when friends set them up on a blind date, but Jackson is a kind man and soon realizes that Abbie needs help. Her home is a bit of a wreck, and since Jackson has nothing else to do on his summer vacation, he volunteers to help her out. Abbie worries because Jackson is a perfectionist.
I always enjoy Ms. Booth's book and one reason is that she incorporates real-life problems into her romances. Both Abbie and Jackson are hiding secrets, and it takes a lot of courage and encouragement for them to reveal their issues to the other. This is just another solid and very enjoyable story in a great series.

I loved this book, it was a poignant and beautiful end to a lovely series. Based on a group of friends and work colleagues, Summer at the Country Practice focuses on Abbie and Jackson, with the stars of the other four books popping in to say hello. Abbie and Jackson are opposites and as the story unfolds the pair get to know each other and the reader learns the heartwrenching reasons why Abbie and Jackson are the way they are. Lovely characters, some light humour (the scene where the entire village is in on the matchmaking made me smile). A great plot and lovely setting.

Brilliant writing

I've read all of Sharon's books, each one as gripping as the next, each one making you feel as if you're there living the story with the characters. But this one, this one made me feel that the author has grown so much in her writing. The chapter describing the heartfelt , difficult conversation between Abbie, her daughter and her ex husband was just brilliant. Well done Sharon, looking forward to the next 😊
