Saving Ceraste #1

The Bride Program

Rate this book
Maya Arnold was leading a normal life, working and helping care for her sister, until the Cerasteans arrived. Offering a cure for cancer if enough women volunteer as brides, Maya jumped at the chance. Saving her sister was her only goal. She never expected to actually fall in love with an alien, or find best friends in the other bride volunteers.

Since the mysterious destruction of Ceraste, Commander D’Avii and the surviving males have been searching the galaxy for a new home. Finding Earth and its women was a miracle. Like most Cerasteans, he finds humans to be fascinating creatures none more so than bride volunteer Maya. His attraction to her is instant and intense. Still he knows Maya can never choose him, a warrior, with so many higher caste scientists seeking their own mates. To do so would shame the scientists and tear the last of his people apart. Yet he aches at the loss of something he never even had.

1.5 stars. This book reads like a journal entry by a teenage girl. She's reading a Ruby Dixon knockoff alien romance, and every chapter is a diary entry/summary of what she just read.

This author mostly TELLS you what happens instead of putting it on the page. Even conversations are summarized and not experienced. Everything is very dry, clipped, emotionless, and to the point. It's a summary of a story. We aren't missing much though, because most of the conversation is very juvenile, with the girls making fun of each other:

" 'I can't help if that I'm irresistible,' she sasses back. 'Irresistible to the type of guy that spends the whole date talking about his ex, maybe,' I joke. "

OR, making fun of the aliens, (who are crazy-advanced, have learned more about earth's cultures than most Americans, and can CURE FLIPPIN' CANCER with ease) who are constantly teased because they don't understand slang and pop culture references about movies like Top Gun. There is little conversation, and at least half of it is this "teasing", some of it downright rude. For example, nothing in their relationship of the two women quoted above, which has only been a few hours, warrants this comment. The main character, Maya, had only expressed jealousy of the woman's high heel shoes, and had previously mocked her for "turning hair flipping and sashaying into a fine art" which she described as "silliness". Why is it silly, when the ENTIRE reason you are both where you are is to CHOOSE A HUSBAND? The author tries to tell us that these girls are all besties, but they are all very different and some of the things they say to each other have that mean girl group edge that I personally have avoided in my friendship groups.

The girls are on the spaceship for months, and no one acts like there is any interest in dating, courting, or choosing. They are more interested in finding jobs on the ship then men. The "plot twist" that scientists get brides first is sloppily thrown in halfway through because there is zero conflict in the story and nothing is happening. It makes NO SENSE that the aliens would then let the women interact casually with the warrior caste. The women have morning coffees with the warriors, invite them to movie nights and cuddles on the couch. It's a hell of a twist to drop in after a month or so. The two main characters just take it in stride for a few weeks until someone says "hey, you know that scientist thing is not in the literal rule book for brides, right?" Maya the dummy, and her partner alien, who has absolutely zero personality, never read the rules. It's cleared up with a question to the human-alien liason and a couple of paragrams of dry, summary/dialogue. So.... It was never actually a conflict, just two dummies that deserve each other.

Then book just stops...

Dull. Bored now.

The sad part is I liked the concept. It could've been a contender, but it was sooooooooooo boring (paragraphs upon paragraphs of info and I'm not talking world-building either, just stupid, pointless stuff that does nothing to move the plot along) and criminally stupid (let's just let humans just walk around unsupervised in a spaceship, oh look, what a cute little animal, let me just touch it).

Also, eww, Earth men are just gross, so I might as well try aliens. Here's a hint, princess. If all men you date are trash, the problem isn't them, it's you.

It's also in present tense.

I bailed after the fourth chapter. Glad it was a KU.

Short story. It was o.k., the best part was the sex. Other than that, not much going on. 3☆

It was cute but it ended quite abruptly and was much shorter than I expected it to be. It felt unfinished to me.

3 & 1/2 stars rounded up.
I don't know, the main characters were ok, nothing memorable, nothing bad. Some of the secondary characters were more interesting than the main characters at times. Over a week later -writing the review, I can't remember the names of the main characters & didn't feel like looking for them either. It held my attention and & didn't think about quitting, so that's a plus. The plot was a bit predictable and had an overly cheesy factor to the story. But it wasn't enticing enough for me to want to read more in the series.

Honestly ok!

This was a slow burn, which is ok. I'm not sure I'm going to try it the next book, but there were some humorous parts. Don't know if it's actually call it a humorous book myself, but... Not the worst book I've read, just kind of middle of the road, if you know what I mean.

Not bad for the authors first

This short novella was just alright. Not great, not bad...but just alright. I think for the authors first go at putting a book out it wasn’t terrible. The H is likable, the h is just okay. She doesn’t have any unique physical or trait characteristics that make her memorable. There were introductions of several other characters in this one, so it certainly seems the author plans for more. Unfortunately one of the upcoming books appears to be a reverse harem with MFM. This RH trend is really getting beat down in sci-fi romance lately. Those two males see, more interesting than the H is this book though, as do the other females highlighted.
It seems like this was supposed to be more instalove style. However, weeks and weeks go by in the book and everyone seems to be just casually hanging out around the space ship. There’s some getting to know each other, but nothing exciting. The best part were some of the lines around the accidental release of a small rodent type sounding animal and the ensuing naming of the event. The actual sex didn’t take place until much later in the book, I’d say after the 80% mark. The scene was just okay. I did not like how they had oral in the elevator earlier in the book and then as they’re leaving the H explains that she isn’t supposed to be with a warrior and the h all of a sudden has a total b*tch moment hissy fit and storms off. Uh...where did that immature behavior come from? It was uncalled for. And I disliked how the H was able to just let the h go on about her business and ignore her for days instead of fighting to have her.
I’m curious to see if the authors work grows and progresses as she puts more books out. It looks like based on this one she plans for more.

It was a good novella, but the plot was a little over-simplistic even for a short read.
The main problem resolved itself too quickly and it sounded a little dumb at the end of the day: if it was so simple to change the aliens minds over the choosing, why all the drama before just going and saying it? Why not make it a little harder then how it went?
I kinda liked the H but he did little to be with the h.
The h was not annoying but the scenes with her friends near the end were too Disney Channel IMO, it got a little too corny for my liking.
I think I'll try another book from this series since it got me envolve for a couple of hours.

Easy, quick, sweet and surprisingly entertaining read.

The world building is interesting and has lot of potential. Invested in a number of the members of the Dulci Liberation Front, so it will be interesting to see what happens next.

No me lo he podido terminar de leer por los incontables errores tipográficos que había en el texto. Una vergüenza que ni el autor/a ni Amazon se preocupen por estas cosas. Devolví la compra del libro, por supuesto.

Well if this isn't the cutest little story ever. It's so frickin' sweet. It's a short story and with the stripped down writing style I'm amazed at how much I was able to connect with these characters. I really cared about D'Avii and Maya and wanted them to be together, and the relationship and the story didn't feel rushed at all.

This is my first alien romance and my first book by this author. She set the stage for the series really well, explaining the alien culture and introducing the characters. It was an interesting story with understated humor and dual point of view giving insight into how both characters are confounded and fascinated by the other's culture and customs. There's a little bit of angst but mostly it's funny to read how both characters try to interpret each other's ideas and behavior within their own frame of reference.

Just in case you get a little mixed up, there's a detailed description of each character at the end of the book, but you may find it useful to read this first, or at least refer to it as you are reading.

So if you want a fun, imaginative little read that you can complete in an afternoon this is a good one. It's lighthearted romantic fantasy. Doesn't take itself too seriously, just meant to amuse and entertain.

Lovely and Interesting Story

I really liked this book. The concept was interesting and a refreshing change of pace from your typical romance novel. I liked the attention to detail given to the Cerasteans, their appearance, culture, mannerism, and backstory. It felt full fleshed out to me, and I really became immersed in the excitement of Maya as she discovered an alien race existed and her foray into their world as she volunteered for the Bride Program. I won't give any spoilers here, but suffice it to say, I was pleased with the progression of the relationship she forms with a Cerastean male. My only complaint is that I wish the book had been longer and that we could've spent a little more time with the couple. I felt the ending came too quickly, and it felt rather abrupt. It also left a lot of things unresolved. We're introduced to a number of supporting characters, and their arcs were incomplete. I'd have even been satisfied with an epilogue that resolved everything, giving us a glimpse of things several months into the future. I just felt unsatisfied with the way things were left.

Earth has made first contact, or rather the Cerasteans have made first contact with Earth governments, and they want wives.

Their planet and all on it have been infected with something that killed all the Cerasteans, leaving only those who were on a voyage of exploration alive. They have found Earth, and figured out that humans are biologically comparable with them, so they want to trade advanced medical and scientific technology for volunteer wives. Maya Arnold is one of the first to volunteer so that her sister has a chance at leukemia treatment before she dies. She meets her pilot and his co pilot as her group of accepted brides is conveyed up to the ship in orbit above. D'Avii is a warrior class male and when Maya sees him she feels a connection, but the Cerasteans expect the brides to choose from the scientist class until they all have wives. Maya and her new friends among the brides decide to get that changed so Maya can truly have her choice of husband as was promised.

3.5 ⭐️’s Solid, entertaining, huge potential.

I enjoyed this way more than I expected.

Had some lighthearted comedy that had me laughing out loud.
Had an excellent character based story.
Very likeable characters.
Found family building.
A cute alien critter.
A lovely romance.

Cons:
Too much tell in all areas, not enough show. Everything (character building, alien culture, romance, backstories), would tease you with a good intro of story, then finish off with only telling.

Way too rushed trying to reach those milestones and plot points.

The overall plot was weakly presented. It constantly hinted at bigger and better stories, but never delivered here.
I suspect they will be included in later books.

Overall, I did really enjoy this, and it was a good, solid start to the series.
But, you can easily see how this could have been a 4-5 ⭐️ story.
Hopefully the author will get there in future works.

This was my Dane Griggs's book, and won't be my last. This is the first novella in the Saving Ceraste Series, a sexy, Humorous Sci-Fi Alien Romance. Maya and D’Avii share an instant attraction, and a strong chemistry. Maya is strong and smart. D'Avii is handsome and protective. I like to have both POV. The supporting characters are great, and interesting. The world building is intriguing. The storyline is sweet, romantic, and fast-paced. I like Maya's family. Verla Bond did a fantastic job bringing this story to life. I enjoyed it. This was a light and fun listen. Looking forward to listen to Bedside Manners for Aliens, the next book in the Series. If you like Sci-Fi Alien Romance, this one is for you.

Fun alien romance with a happy ever after

This was a quick, fun read. I've read several similar books before,so I knew I would get a happy ever after ending.
There is some spice towards the end of the book, although not as much as I'd hoped for.

I've given the book four stars because I couldn't give it 3.5. It wasn't a bad story, so didn't deserve three stars, but there were parts of the story which could have been expanded upon to draw the reader in. The characters didn't really have time to develop and it would have been nice to see a bit more world building. I'm hopeful that this improves over the course of the series.

Scales, horns, and forked tongues… oh my!

This was wonderful. I love stories about aliens and humans learning to understand each other. In this story, it’s not so much a language difficulty as it is idioms and figures of speech. The aliens come from a ridged culture where speech is always literal and everyone knows their place in society. Then humans come along and turn everything on upside-down with our refusal to follow the rules, our willingness to follow love, and our absolute inability to stay out of trouble. This was just so much fun. It will have to go on my reread shelf.

This was an awesome romance

So the language was awesome, the writing seemed effortless and there were plenty of humor filled moments out of the species misunderstandings. The aliens while bug, buff, smart and drool worthy were not alpha to the bone where they disregarded the human females except as breeders or pleasure toys. This was a refreshing change, the main guy too direction from Maya and she was still able to be fulfilled. I haven't read the second book yet but I am hopeful for this series, it shows plenty of promise....

The Bride Program

The aliens Cerasteians came to Earth and hope to integrate into the humans world by saving people who are ill and they only want women volunteers for brides. Maya choose to be a bride because her little sister has leukemia. She and other women leave Earth and travel to the mother ship to live and learn about the aliens. D’Avii is of the Warrior class and never thought he might be chosen and when Maya does choose him it causes problems. Can it be fixed or will they go their separate ways? Highly recommend this book

This is the first book I've read by Dane Griggs.
The story and the characters are good. Maya and D'Avii both are easy to like. What I love about this book is that despite its short length, everything is in it.
The concept of the story is also good. There's no much conflict in it. But still it's ok tho.
Overall, it's a good read. Hoping to see the story of the other characters in the Bride Program, especially the ones who Maya befriended and the 2 scouts. 😊

Loved it

First read by this author. Hopefully the series will continue. Let's see others find their match and to start by curing cancer was exactly what I would want from any advanced species!!!!!. Thank you for doing that instead of offering more higher tech and keeping our heroes so wonderfully gracious and loving, instead of giant fighting predators. Keep writing....there's a brand new romance writer for me to enjoy and devour....You Rock

Hope there will be more of these stories. They are funny, sexy and a delight to read. I enjoyed the way the author introduced each character and how well they complimented each other.

The story however short was one I couldn't put down until it was completed. I hope more will follow with each character 's story being told. I am curious to see if the General and Sara get together. bbq

This book was absolutely adorable and I thoroughly enjoyed it! It was funny, sweet, and the characters were amazing. This book, in my opinion, is just a quick little “palate cleanser” I like to call books that don’t require too much emotional attachment, give you happy feelings, and get you ready for the next book that will wreck you emotionally and physically, a palate cleanser. I will definitely be reading more of this author!❤️

Not bad, but I wanted more.
Woman volunteer to become brides for the Cerastean aliens in exchange for the cure for cancer.
But when they arrive on the alien ship, they are pretty much abandoned. Sure some of the aliens interact with them but it's all left to chance.
Maya feels an immediate pull towards D'Avii but then finds out they won't be allowed to mate since he's from the warrior caste...WTF!

Very intriguing Book

This boy ok had been in my TBR purchases. And I finally had a chance to read it today. It was a short story for me. But, I found it to be a very interesting story. And you could visualize the Aliens very clearly. I will definitely buy the other books in this series. Wasn’t sure how I felt about them being akin to snakes. To me it wasn’t to overly snaky if you know what I mean. I would definitely recommend it to others.

dnf at 85% cause it was boring and poorly written

I gave it up til 30% before deciding it was boring. Aliens is so inherently interesting but i feel like everything was done in a tell dont show way that made it fall flat and seem boring. It was like that annoying kid that never shuts up or takes the social queue to stop talking. I almost finished then decided it was awful waste of my night and I would rather do something else

This was my first book from this author, and it was an amazing quick read. I loved this book, I didn't want it to end. There were many funny moments. My favorite was the Dulci Liberation Incident. I wished this book was longer, but it was a lovely short read. I loved the friendships the FMC makes. The spicy scenes were on point. If you love sci-fi, alien romances, then I highly recommend this book. It is a series so good to read the many adventures that many characters go on.
