A Dream Too Wild: Emerson Meditations for Every Day of the Year

Rate this book
Master of the aphorism, Emerson is the most quoted of all American writers. Yet there have been few anthologies of Emerson's sayings and none quite like this one. Drawing from all of Emerson--his early sermons and lectures, his journals, his many books and essays, and his poetry--this unique book of thoughtfully selected passages captures the many textures and nuances of this exceptional mind. We find a spiritual message at the heart of his philosophy. Emerson's spiritual vision is reflected in these selections, the most relevant writings for today's spiritual seekers. This meditation collection will provide an opportunity to celebrate and re-evaluate Emerson's contribution to America's spiritual history. The depth and breadth of Emerson's words will show a new generation of Americans how to bring an open heart and a critical mind to the spiritual search.

A wonderful way to read Emerson (excerpts), as his essays/lectures can be a little daunting. The editor did a good job of including enough in each passage to give voice to Emerson's insight. Mostly, I discovered how much I see things differently than Emerson, but respect him nonetheless. Not least of all, for beautiful reflections such as this:

This disappointment is felt in every landscape. I have seen the softness and beauty of the summer clouds floating overhead, enjoying, as it seemed, their height and privilege of motion, whilst yet they appeared not so much the drapery of this place and hour, as forelooking to some pavilions and gardens of festivity beyond. It is an odd jealousy: but the poet finds himself not near enough to his object.

This will always be on my currently reading list since it is a daily reader from the writing of Ralph Waldo Emerson. At the end of each reading there is a question to think about or meditate on which helps me to digest the reading.

This is a daily meditation book that is both meditation and a great literary experience for me. The writings of Emerson are varied in topic and perspective. This is an outstanding book and thought inducing companion for your days and life. I believe it would be enjoyed also by those who are not of Christian faith, as it not as much theology and more reflective in it's content. This is a book I believe found me as much as I found it.
