Note that the Japanese volumes are split into 上下, though my review is basically on both.
I read this book for the first time back when it was first released at the recommendation of my English teacher for an essay project in high school. I knew nothing about the series, didn't even know it was quickly gaining in popularity. But I did know that after I finished it, I was more than underwhelmed.
It's been well over a decade since then, and while the movies can be a fun campy treat to poke fun at now and again, I never considered revisiting the series until a friend of mine suggested it as a potentially good book to practice reading in another language. Given the, um, lack of literary flair of the author, the book would be very approachable even for lower level learners. I eventually caved and gave it a shot.
And um. Well. My friend WAS right. The book was easy to read. But good lord, did I forget just how bad it was. I know there's been a growing resurgence over the years to support this series and the author, but like, was that based off of nostalgia? Guilt? Or like, have y'all reread the series recently? Because it's so incredibly boring.
The tale of a teenage girl moving to a small town, has a run in with a vampire, unbeknownst to her, and instantly he's taking up free rent in her mind 24/7. They're teens, what else can you expect?
Bella isn't the blank slate as much as I remembered, however she IS very mean and negative throughout the entire book. It's hard to really understand her position of moving back in with her father to give her mother space with her new partner as a selfless act when Bella otherwise has very little empathy or care for...anyone. Even when her mother reaches out to hear from her, Bella treats it like a chore to check off a list. She knows her father is like her, who struggles with social interactions, but it's never a fault that she tries to change. There's no real arch, lessons learned, character growth.
Edward is also not that engaging of a character. His back and forth-ness makes sense, in that, it's clear he has a drive to engage with Bella, yet also understands he presents a danger to her. He's also a teenager...?? I guess. Like, idk how aging works in this universe, I don't think it's ever explained. But he certainly acts like a teen at least. But we don't really get to know anything about HIM beyond he's a hot vampire. There is zero character depth for him, or anyone.
All of the side characters, including Bella's dad, are either stereotypes, tropes, or flat filler. They don't add anything to the story beyond telling us that Bella is kind of a bitch in the way she treats all of them. There's several chapters of telling us that Edward is bombarding her with personal questions, because he can't read her mind, but we basically never get to hear any of the answers?
It's taking me so long to read this because I'm just bored out of my mind. Nothing happens. We don't get to know anyone. Bella is just an unlikable teenage lead to follow. Edward is bringing nothing to the table. I can see how this was popular with young girls, like more so middle/early high school probably? But y'all...
I really fought to give this a chance. I'm older now, I've grown a lot since then, maybe I could find something in the story to appreciate that I didn't see back then. And mind you, I AM the target audience. Romance is my favorite genre. Even as a kid. But this book is, despite obviously having become a massive phenomenon and now with a cult following...not it.
On to part two, I guess...ugh.
Anyway, for anyone wanting to read the book in Japanese:
If you're a solid N3, especially if you're familiar with the series (books or movies), this should be very approachable for you. I could easily see this as someone's first novel. The writing style is very simple and repetitive. However, there is basically no furigana, so if kanji is a weak point for you, be warned.
