Jade #1

A Broken Jewel

Rate this book
Don’t stand out.
Keep control.
Don’t draw attention.

These are words that Jade lives by every day. Her abilities that she doesn’t understand must be kept hidden. With only a few friends and an over controlling mother, Jade is just trying to get by in life until she can move out on her own. Then a beautiful stranger walks into her life. And another one. And another one. They say they understand her and promise to take her away where she can be herself. They say she is like them. But Jade has never trusted anyone before and doesn’t know how to start now.

Until Jade is out of time and the guys make the choice for her.

Just a heads up- If you like a dominating, opinionated, strong female lead- this is not the book for you. Jade starts this series broken, unsure, and naive. If you like strong, dominating, controling males, this is the book for you. This is a Reverse Harem novel with moderate language and moderate sexual content. Intended for young adult and mature audiences.

For my first work ever- I love this book. I think the story has a solid plot, with constant twists and I loved creating these characters. But I know there is something many people don't enjoy! Jade's relationship with Pierce- the dominance and the control he puts over her. And how she backs down, submits, etc.
This detail of the book seemed to have rubbed many readers the wrong way.
There are 3 main answers for this questions.
1, Because I wanted it that way. Period. I wanted to created dominant males, it floats my boat, and I like it. I don't like female characters that are dominant, get their way, rule the house, etc. I wanted to create situations where there would be arguments and tension, and dominanting males had the last word. For my readers that hated this aspect- I could tell they preferred female characters that had a stronger voice, and more control in the plot. And that is perfectly, totally, okay!
2, Jade is ignorant, naive, inexperianced. And in my opinion, sometimes she's dumb. She doesn't know what's best- she doesn't understand the whole picture- she needs to be pulled in ways she doesn't want to. The guys needed her, and again, I liked that they pushed her to be more.
3, Jade needs oppurtunities to grow! This is a series. I gaurantee you (as I smile evily) Jade will be much stronger, and more confident in situations to come. She will stand her ground. What fun is it to have a character that doesn't morph into something amazing from being forced into situations they don't want??
Thank you for all the reviews and feedback! I created something that made many people have both positive and negative reactions- I think that is wonderful. I realize that even though I have my own views and opionions, that does not mean I can change your feelings towards Pierce and Jade. I can only let you see it from my point of view.
Happy Reading!
PS please excuse typos- no spell check at this moment.

There’s a difference between dominant and an asshole. This book tried really hard to make the guys pass off as the former, but only come off as the latter.

It’s impossible to like men who constantly and blatantly disregard the MC’s most basic wishes, starting with something as simple as privacy. Gavin forces Jade to march to her closet, clad only in a towel, because despite her politely asking him for privacy, he refuses to leave her room. If that’s not bad enough, the book makes sure to mention him staring at her the entire time, like the fucking creep he is. Alex threatens to throw away her make-up and “not being able to touch her”, constantly bitching about her being attractive to other men.

The worst offender, however, is Pierce when he becomes Jade’s partner in her first “positive” sexual experience. But because he is Pierce, he makes it disgusting by casting a thick layer of dubious consent on the entire scene. See, during the entire act, he is pushing his “dominance” power bullshit into her while she actively tries to fight him off after he breaks into her bathroom, where she had locked herself in for some privacy. But despite the struggles, her constantly telling him “no” and, I repeat, wrestling him while trying to get away, the scene still pretends their dry-humping was a healthy thing, the culmination of long-simmering unresolved sexual tension, and not straight-up assault.

It’s a constant during the entire book. Jade asks for something, the guys refuse, she submits – her other setting being “violently emotional”, which is turned on by - of course! - jealousy, because heaven forbid these guys she only just met may have had any type of sexual contact with other people before she came in the picture. I could have dealt with one scene like this, since part of the story is about her dealing with the sudden onset of a very violent puberty, but every time Ariana or Katie come up it’s all about “their lustful feelings” for the guys and Jade’s possessiveness. It’s such a shitty choice, to have all interactions between women be one step away from a catfight. Especially given how two of those women are professional assassins and should be above that shit.

Seriously. Jade’s emotional waffling is so inconsistent. At one point, has a gun pointed at her and Kyson during a frankly awkward confrontation during which the only logical action is taken by Gavin, who drugs him. Of course, this makes Jade physically attack Gavin, calling him a “son of a bitch” for daring to drug a man actively pointing a gun at her. And my absolute favorite moment: Jade refusing to destroy eggs in a tube because “these are probably [fertility patients] eggs, their babies” while very aware Pierce and Gavin were two floors down.)

Also, it's really tiresome and unoriginal to read about white people whose enemies are comprised of mostly POCs. The book has them face off against black and middle Eastern people, and even joins the lot, what with him being Asian and evil. Jade straight up has nightmares about "black faces" and relaxes after a violent mission after hearing "clearly American" voices. The only friendly foreigner is conveniently Caucasian. The fact that at the end of the book it's revealed that Jade and her guys are just pissed me off all the more, because wow, how convenient it is that they yet are all white.

As the first in a trilogy, there’s a good chance the characters will get their shit together in the following books, but A Broken Jewel had over 500 pages to make me feel anything but disgust for these characters and failed. I have read shorter stand-alone RH books with larger casts that made a better job of presenting believable relationships between “broken” people. So maybe I will give the second book a try, but not any time soon on account of how tired the entire thing made me. There’s nothing attractive about the thought of having to wade through 1000 pages more in the hopes that I may feel anything but contempt for these characters and their choices.

3.5 stars.

I liked this book well enough for an RH book, it had all the right elements.

Even though Jade was a typical naive girl, she didn't remind me of the typical RH main female characters. My main problem with her was that after everything she learned and experienced, she still had doubts about the woman who raised her.

My main issue with the book is that it was overly long. I think some stuff could have been left out, and the book would have been better. It had enough action and romance without needing filler material.

The last couple of chapters really caught my interest because I didn't see that plot twist coming, although it makes sense. I have a ton of questions, so I will be continuing the series.

A good read.

Interesting

Good story, lots of secrets and mystery. I liked Jade good MC, they guys were really over protective of her, which they had a reason for. Will follow series to see where things lead.

I don't like giving first time authors bad reviews. Because, I always want to root for authors success. So, I probably would give this book 2**, but it wasnt completely horrible that I DNF. even though i skimmed most of it.
I love love RH books, and have read soooo many of them since the start 0f 2018.

So for the PROs
- I liked that the girl was not a victim of any kind of physical abuse; which is super common in RH books
- I like that she is not such a weak girl
Cons
-This was another one of those RH books where the girls and the guys have "powers" due to being genetically engineered in a lab. I feel like I have read a handful of these RH books before. Not that its a bad thing, but when you read a bunch of a similar kind of plot before it gets boring
-Maybe its me, but this book felt SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO long. Again, maybe its me. I can usually skim through a book pretty fast, but this one took longer than the average book to skim though. Plus, I feel that many things could have been cut out to make it shorter
- The guys were nice to Jade, and were protective. And there was kissing and some sweet moments and some sweet words. But, overall I was not over the moon over the guys Jade had.

I dont know. I cant pin point why I didn't love the book. I feel the author has big potential to grow. And, I believe she can write great things in the future. Plus, we always have to consider she is a self-published author( i believe?), and sometimes these self-published authors dont have the funds to put in $3K-5K for a professional publisher.

Great Story but Needs Editing

I found this book through one of my FB reader groups. Without many reviews, I didn't know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised. The author did a stellar job of creating the mood and developing the characters. All of the main characters, not including the villains, were complex in that they both delighted and frustrated me with their moods or decisions. Even when I wanted to scream at them though, I could somewhat understand why they reacted or behaved in the way that they did. Though I wouldn't necessarily consider this a dark book it was gritty with often a grim and melancholy tone. This tone definitely fit the circumstances of the protagonist. The only real negative and it was a biggie is the fact that it needs major editing. Then was used erroneously instead of than most of the time. Passed was often used instead of past plus several other random typos. It did pull me from the story however it was good enough that I would still recommend this to others. I am looking forward to seeing where this story goes next.

Man, it goes on and on and on... Every time I thought the book was coming to an end, there was just more book! But I couldn’t stop reading. So much was happening but it kept me engaged the whole way. And the small POV from Gavin. YES.

I did enjoy the buildup in the story. Right up until one of the MMC uses his mental powers of domination to force himself on the FMC without explicit consent. She even said "no".

Really?

If that was a theme in this book, a warning would have been appreciated.

UGH OMG, MAN AM I ON A ROLL!!!! UGHH THAT WAS PHENOMENAL!!! I LITERALLY ACTUALLY STARTED TEARING UP AT LIKE MULTIPLE POINTS!!! UGH I LOVE THEM ALL! I actually really enjoyed Jade, she was super entertaining to go through this journey with! I love the storyline, and all the different parts especially with their plan! I'm so glad with everything that happened, and that the people that deserved it GOT. THEIR. END......

The only thing was that at parts I was like "is it ever going to end???" like after I read it I always got attached but at some point after The book was around like 436 pages ish I think, so it was long, but some parts just seemed to drag on.

BUT OMG!!!! THAT ENDING

I just.... I love them all..... *sobs* My heart literally shattered and was pounding, and I loved EVERY second of it.... It staying in Jade's POV for all of it (besides that one chapter with Gavin *hehe*) and I LOVED it!!

Reading the reviews of this book might have been a bad idea, as I went into this saga with some preconceived notions that proved to be unfounded. Jade, while certainly naive and easily led, is NOT as downtrodden or as weak as some implied. Instead, I found her to be a young, yet determined, woman struggling to find her place in a new world that smacked her upside the head.

All in all, this is a Coming of Age New Adult Series with an unusual paranormal bend.... one that makes the foundation of this melodic tale fascinating. It's a bit angsty, a touch annoying and features Alpha males with dominating airs I kinda wanted to smack away... almost. I felt like she was dragged around and into situations, yet she isn't the shrinking violet some reviews painted her as. No, Jade isn't quite as strong as her cohorts, but she is far from weak, and it seems that her strength may be still be growing - which leads me to expect a delicious confrontation with Pierce. Insert evil laugh here....

This book starts off really interesting, but then it seems to lag a little bit. I was a bit frustrated with how a few of the guys treated Jade, and how she just let them. That was annoying, other than that I liked it, although sometimes it felt like having Jade around was pointless.

Ok so... I don’t really know where to start, so I guess I’ll start with the basics. This book is the first in a reverse harem supernatural series, and at first glance it seems interesting, maybe even - dare I say it? - different. And it was, in some ways... In others, it was disappointingly predictable.

*WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD*

Jade is on her school’s running team, and she always finishes second best, but she has a secret - in reality, she’s much faster than any human, she just tries not to draw attention to herself. Her two bets friends are also on the team.

Cool, we think, she’s smart, she has powers and she knows not to abuse them, and she has some non-toxic female friends! How much better can it get?

Well, it all starts going south when she notices a hot redheaded boy watching her at practice. Then she meets another two hotties at a gas station as she’s filling up on gas and we’re like - great, the first one seemed a bit hot and bothered but the others seemed nice, this is going well. Then the gas station gets robbed, we get to see that she apparently has more powers that involve pushing waves of energy (?) at people, and she basically saves the day. Woohoo, we might shout, she’s a badass! But don’t count your lucky cards just yet folks.

Basically, she meets the hotties again at a party she gets dragged to by one of her friends, and they try to convince her to go with them - without explaining why, saying they’ll “explain once she’s joined them”. They basically give her one week to decide (and if they had a freaking week why not take the time to EXPLAIN TO HER why she needed to leave her whole life behind?? Just thinking out loud here) she tells them ok but yeah probably not something I’m gonna do. She meets them again a few days later and the same thing goes down. So, we think, what are they gonna do next? Is something dangerous gonna happen to her because she didn’t listen (to what they kinda didn’t tell her) and are they gonna save her? Are they gonna take her aside and explain their reasoning and ask her to go in them again? Well, what you probably didn’t think was ARE THEY GONNA CRASH THEIR CAR INTO HERS, DRUG HER, KIDNAP HER, and when she escapes are they gonna DRUG HER AGAIN, TAKE HER TO THEIR HOUSE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COUNTRY AND NOT LET HER LEAVE. Neither did I, babe, neither did I.

So ok, maybe we could forgive them for this. These four guys (yeah there’s one more) saved her from some voodoo organisation that SPOILER ALERT ALERT ALERT her mother is a part of. Fine. What I personally can’t forgive though, is the way they treated her afterwards.

They kept ridiculing her for feeling emotional about leaving her life behind; they took her on a mission she WASN’T READY FOR and with no warning killed a bunch of people and expected her to kill in the same ruthless way,and when she got a tiny bit traumatised!? They basically told her to stop being a fucking baby.

Any time she told them she wasn’t ready for something my man Pierce (my least favourite of all the guys) told her that HE knew SHE was. Fuck you man, fuck you. Also, when they flat out told her that they expected her to help kill her own mother and she wasn’t totally sure about it? She’s being weak. Duh. Oh and when they tell her that they’re gonna raid and destroy the big bad office of the organisation they ALSO include killing the children that are being kept in there “because what could they do with them?”, children that we later find out were created using HER EGGS AND THEIR SPERM SO BASICALLY THEY KILL THEIR OWN (fucked up) CHILDREN WITHOUT REMORSE, without even TRYING to save them. And she’s the fucked up one for feeling bad. Yeah, jupp, that’s where we’re at ppl.

Idk, I actually really enjoyed the whole supernatural part of the story, and at first I liked the guys too - but the more I read the more annoyed I became with them. That said, I’ll still give the story three stars because it was well-written, the powers were interesting and kind of made sense, and a lot of parts were entertaining and even sweet. I just ultimately had a problem with the dynamics (and with Pierce tbh), but had that not been the case this would have been a four star review easily. And I could totally see a lot of people who aren’t as “feminist” as me enjoying this book. Truth is, there aren’t a lot of rh books out there and I’ve read FAAAR worse in this genre. So I’d still give this a shot, because in this niche I’d say it actually surpasses over 80% of books in it’s grammar and “feministic tendency”. We don’t got a lot to choose from, and despite everything I just said, this ain’t the worst choice you could make.

Ok so I really don’t want to give a negative review to a new writer, but I think she has a ton of potential. I DNF at around 72% and I can only count a handful of books I haven’t finished. Spoiler warning because I touch on a few things lightly, but none of them give away the plot, nor are they big pieces of the story. I kept it vague.

Things I liked:
-I was very interested in the plot. The story was inventive and suspenseful. I constantly was asking myself what direction it would go in.
-I liked the authenticity of the FMC
-I liked the way she wrote. It was structured well, aside from a few typos that are to be expected. They didn’t deter from the book whatsoever.

Things I struggled with:
-I love domineering alpha males. I love bully to lover tropes. I love when they push the FMC. I’ve read a ton of stalker books so I’m not anti-wild male at all. However, I really had a hard time with the harem. The men came in to rescue her when in reality, it’s obvious that they want to pursue their own agenda without considering the consequences of what that would mean for Jades mental health. They mention how Gavin didn’t leave his room for a month, that they brought meals to him and babied him, yet this girl can’t even have a day to come to terms with her nearly identical memories. They are cruel. One of them called her fat, they threaten to drug her when she doesn’t cooperate, they don’t seem to care if they break the girl. Now if this book was modeled to have cruel men, I wouldn’t be saying this. Because in those books, the FMC ends up enjoying the cruelty. But not here. Nope. This is set up like an abusive relationship. One minute they’re kind, the next their cruel. They say they care and that they’re good guys, but they aren’t. Theyre cold and I think deep down, psychopaths, honestly. And not in the way that gets my twisted, dark-book loving heart a Twitter.

-she is treated like an afterthought always yet she goes above and beyond for them. She cleans up after them, she does what they ask, she comforts them, she puts herself last which is exactly the situation she found herself in before.

-this book is too r*pe-happy. Unless we find out that the girl is secretly a succubus or something, not every single man she meets will try and r*pe her. But that’s basically what happens.

-books comes across as slightly racist. I don’t believe the author intended it that way. I just think it wasn’t addressed during edits, when it should have been.

Overall, the book could be awesome with some tweaks. I hope she continues writing and I will definitely try another series by her.

Hidden jewel for sure!! It wasn't perfect but it was a great read nonetheless.

Probably contains spoilers of some sort so read at your own risk...

Jewel, grew-up with a controlling distant mother. When she turns 18 she gets kidnapped by a group of men who are just like her: not quite human. She learns that her mother was planning to sell her to a breeding facility. The men didn't have a home like her but grew-up in a testing facility where they were tortured. So, her kidnappers are her heroes but this isn't insta love but slow burn romance. It is pretty obvious that they are fated mates of some sort. As such they are able to feel each other emotions and they are all attracted to each other. If you read shifter books similar to that concept.
Pretty realistic portrayal of feelings I read in any book!! Since the group is fated mates, Jewel's body wants the males but then she battles her own feelings because she grew-up human. Ie. Why is she attracted to males that kidnapped her and are monitoring her every move. Also, when it comes to her "mother", she hates her but she also grew up with her so she can't harm her. At times I found Jewel super annoying because I wanted the story to move along. However, after reading it I appreciated the authors realistic portrayal of someone who grew-up human and is battling her own nature.

The males characters are well written too. Pierce is the Alpha male of the group. He can insert dominace and all the other males also have special powers.
The men need Jewel to take down the facility and her mother. The story has a few unexpected twists but it doesn't end on a serious cliffhanger. More of a next chapter of the story feeling.

The only complaint is that the story is long. This is probably a personal preference where I'm used to shorter books.

Omg how stupid is this girl? Firstly you find people like you for the first time and instead of asking questions you keep running away. They save you and you are a pain, even when everything is explained to you. Quite frankly they should let her get chopped up in that lab.

She had ZERO empathy for what the boys went through ZERO care about their mental states. More interested in wanting to go back to her old life. 5 doors from the "mother" who wants to dissect her and has put a bounty on her head. What kind of stupidity is this!!!

She can easily check if the boys are lying or not but oh no "I'm shutting down my connections" I kept trying to give this book a chance but at 60% There are no stars left to lose.

Great start!!

I really liked the first book in this new series! The length of this book was awesome!!! The guys were amazing and the storyline was new and different. What I struggled with was Jade. She complained about things that were ridiculous and kept running straight into danger because she “needed space”!!!! Literally my biggest pet peeve is when the heroine keeps putting everyone in danger because of stupid decisions!!!!! I will read the next book but I really hope Jade matures and starts thinking more about everyone else and not just what she’s been through.

Fabulous full length novel

The plot of this book was totally original. I read a lot of books and this one was fully developed. The characters were the good guys but had to do bad things and make tough choices. Some of the other reviews I read talked about the MFC being weak, I think she was spot on due to her upbringing. She's been controlled her whole life and she's learning how to live. I can't wait till the next book.

Hard to like a cast of characters led by a straight-up abusive man who can only get his jollies by wrestling a girl into submission.

Also, don’t think I didn’t notice how the main cast works to defend “the American dream” while fighting a rainbow of minorities that give Jade nightmares “of black faces”.

Fuck this book.

This one was a difficult one for me, there were parts of the book that I liked and parts that I found really annoying and frustrating.

I like the plot, it was interesting, I wanted to know what they were, how their powers worked, how their powers developed when they're together. But I think the main ìssue for me was the MFC, I just didn't like her most of the time, she was so whiney and emotionally immature. Constantly "I can't, I don't know how, I don't want to" and at first I understood her being like this, she's lived a very sheltered life, constantly controlled by her mother but I thought that there would be some emotional development for her as the book went on, I thought she would gain some confidence, become a bit badass seeing as she had all this power, but it just didn't happen, and this for me was probably the most frustrating thing in the book.

I also didn't really like her relationship with one of her guys, Pierce. He's the typical alpha male, in charge of the group, which is all fine, accept for it made me feel uncomfortable when multiple times throughout the book, he used his alpha domineering power over the MFC to force her to do what he wants regardless of how she felt about the situation, it came across as a sort of emotional abusive relationship to me because there wasn't any sort of sensitivity to how the MFC felt or her concerns, there wasn't really any conversation about what her issues were, it was just him with the attitude of you'll do what I say when I say it!

I felt there could have been better character development for all of the main characters as the book went on, especially considering it was such a long book, I mean with the four guys, what do we really know about them after their names and their jobs? There wasn't really anything about their likes, interests or hobbies. Also their relationship with the MFC came across as mostly just physical attraction in my opinion, none of them took any time to find out her likes, dislikes etc, it was basically them making her do whatever they wanted to do, oh and she was the only one in the house that would clean and tidy! What was that about???

Honestly, there were maybe 4 or 5 times throughout the book where I just stopped reading and thought, Eurghhh!! I just cannot carry on with this book!! Parts of it frustrated the hell outta me. But I carried on reading due to the storyline as opposed to the characters.

Also, the ending for me was like what?! Seriously?!? Because all throughout the book the MFC had all these questions she wanted answers to about who/what they are etc, then at the end of the book there's a guy who has answers to all these questions who tells them to meet him in Paris and the MFC is like "Nope!! Can't be dealing with that, let's head to the beach for a few weeks!" WTF?!?! Really??

So yeah, I can see this book has a lot of 5 star reviews, but for me it's a generous 3 stars just because I found the plot kept me interested. I hope for the next book there will be a lot more emotional development for the FMC and more development on the whole relationship side of things.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

So I just finished reading this book and it’s safe to say I really enjoyed it.
More editing was needed as there were quite a few grammatical errors, however there was nothing too distracting.

With RH, recently, I have been finding it extremely difficult to find ones where the guys are decipherable, but that wasn’t the case with this!

We start the book with our heroine, Jade, going about her everyday school life. She knows there’s something different about her - she has heightened senses, is faster and stronger than the average human...and can shoot energy from her hands.
Her mother is very distant, her life revolves around her work and has very strict rules that Jade has to live by. One by one she meets the guys and they pretty much tell her they can help her escape. As it says in the blurb, she’s unsure but they end up having to decide for her.
She wakes up in their house and I’ll leave it there.

I found Jade to be very immature at times. It may have made it worse that I went in thinking, from the author’s note, that she’d be meek, but that’s not the case.
I didn’t dislike her, but at times wanted to give her a little slap, however I could sympathise with the fact she’s was going through a lot.

The guys:

Pierce: Leader of the group. He knows how to call the shots and has a thing for control. Yes, I’m sure this will continue on into the bedroom. He can keep himself stoic when he needs to be but also has a softer, less demanding side that peaks out, mostly for jade.

Alex: He’s the joker of the group, doesn’t take much seriously. He got a bit insecure at one point and can be very jealous when it comes to men outside of the guys.

Kyson: The calmer, more gentle guy of the group. He was very forthcoming and caring. He often knew the right thing to say and...I never thought I’d say a period scene was cute, but it was.

Gavin: Gavin, Gavin, Gavin. Kind of a dick. But he’s our dick. That sounds weird...Gavin was very stoic, had a short temper and was very untrusting. He had a hard time getting over his bitterness toward jade for reasons I cannot say. The dud is blunt and an asshole, but He melted my heart a few times when he stated that he wanted Jade to want him seven with his demons - demons that he found very difficult to get rid of. That’s when he showed his more vulnerable side, which didn’t happen often.
I appreciated him as such an in depth character.

So over all, I enjoyed this book, however at times it felt dragged out and at other times it felt a bit too rushed. Those last couple of chapters didn’t have me feeling anything because there wasn’t no suspense left. I knew how easy it’d be to fix the problem. But this was an enjoyable book and I’ll get around to reading the next at some point!

Wow! I was so engrossed with this book, I only put it down when I absolutely needed to. This was incredible. There was never a moment for me where I was bored or was uninterested in what was happening because we're moving along with the characters of finding who they are together.

Jade...everything unraveling for her in this book I feel like would weigh so heavy on other people. Coming to terms with things we don't like is one of the hardest things. I was so happy with her character development though. She may not be fixed or through the worst of it yet, but she still had a strong growth from the beginning to the end. Her emotional reactions seemed pretty spot on for scenarios. Some were weird but we are talking about a paranormal/sci-fi type book here so not every scenario can be corresponded with basic emotions.

Alex...oh sweet goofy Alex. I did like his character, but wasn't my favorite. The moments I loved him were when he called out "liar". It gave me a chuckle. Also, his goofy nature and they way he could ease her. What I didn't like was how he was constantly saying one thing but doing another. At the same time, everyone is still learning so I can get behind it.

Gavin...wooooh. I did like his neurotic character. He deals with a lot of PTSD issues and made his character really complex. He was mean at times, didn't love the excuses, but it's believable. That's what I did love. He stayed consistent through the book with emotional, and sometimes irrational, behaviors but he also grew from them. So their was character development in the book.

Pierce.... where the heck do I even start with this friggen Alpha. Definitely a new book boyfriend for me. But I love an Alpha. I don't know if I realized any character development from him. Maybe in book 2, but to be honest, I don't think there's a lot of things that could happen for his "leader" mindset.

Kyson... I felt that he was the most level-headed of the guys. He was considerate as well as strong. I loved his character. The only changes that I would say his character made were adjusting to learning about the way their bodies were changing and trying to understand Jade and help her through it all.

Some flaws of the book, because it was long, I think it was harder to edit and catch typos and grammar. It was so easy for me to overlook though because I was so invested in the book. It was filled with action and so I never new what was coming next. The author did a great job with dialogue and not staying so much in the inner monologue. I hope this stays true for the next books. Which I will be diving right into. The last book is always the "make or break" to want to read a series again.

A different kind of story spoilers within

So this is a story that has a lot of open ended questions with lack of answers. We do get some answers but it’s really difficult to figure out the direction this book is going. I also have more questions than answers, but as to why and how Vera found and/or got Jade. I liked the pacing though, I did find Jade having to accompany the guys to their various jobs or classes odd. No one said anything, the professors never said anything about her being in their classes nothing of that sort.

The story doesn’t make sense for those parts but over all I am intrigued.

This story definitely needs a comb over for typos and spelling errors. So many typos, I highlighted them and they can be found on my goodreads review, not sure if kindle shares them here. But tons of words used incorrectly too like the typical ones, then used in place of than. An odd way of writing “huh” was written “hu” - even my autocorrect wants to fix it to hi at least. Kept throwing me off the story.

I still have no clue what Jade or the guys are but I am interested in the next book. I hope the typos are less though, because that’s a major reason for my 3 star rating.

Diversity? No spoiler

Eh. It does get better towards the end in regards to plot but overall it moved far too slow for me to enjoy fully.

My biggest problem with the book was the lack of diversity. Normally I’m used to having all white harems and a white female lead but this time it particularly irritated me. Also there were some misogynistic themes in this book: why was she the only one cleaning, and being overpowered like she was worth nothing? It really irked me how they treated her as if she were a puppet. Can we also note that the first people of color in the book are African men in a gang? Not saying that that isn't a thing but honestly rereading a book before you publish it for slightly racist undertones is a definite must. That alone wasn't really the big issue for me, it was the Middle Eastern terrorists that was the real icing on the cake honestly. Apparently terrorists are only from the middle East (sarcasm). Especially in this political climate, where every Muslim is painted as a terrorists, this definitely lacked awareness for any culture.

Toxic, read at your own risk .🙄🙄

The relationship was so toxic I had to force my self to finish the book. This is the first book where I actually hate all the characters like come on I see no difference between the villains and the guys that “safe” her. She was being treated without any respect or value and when she try to fight that she was force on submission, I don’t care if she was at times whining or having child like behavior for she’s on her right to act like that. Let’s remember that she doesn’t know anything that’s had happened or doesn’t have the memories for that matter and they just expect her to go with all that they ask of her plus kill who she thought was her mother, the guys miss so much explaining for her to cope with all that it just messed up her head even more........anyway I should stop there’s so much uhh 🙄 I can’t with this book this is not how a lady should be treated a lady should be treaded with the highest respect and “love” that there support to have for her in this book and it just doesn’t.

Lets just start with I really wanted to like this book, I usually enjoy the sheltered girl gets freed from her prison (figurative or literal) and finds her true path storyline. Sure Jade gets freed from her mother, but only to find her self in another locked down situation. The guys have just as strict rules and honestly zero empathy for her whole world crashing and burning around her. Every time I think she's getting a back bone one of the guys is their to smack her right back into her place. I kept waiting for her to find her self but she never really does. She goes from being subservient to her mother to following around the guys like lost lamb. Please don't even get me started on what happened in the lab. They had zero empathy or even guilt about killing the subjects. Which is that what they were just a few years ago? I get that the ones in the lab were "created" but at that time they thought they were to....so? The tricks, the lies, the putting Jade in danger to see if she could handle it. All of it just really upset me. I'm seriously hoping she escapes these guys and finds some new ones.
