Mystify Me: A Cinematic Experience

Rate this book
Ben has been around the New York streets since he left Russia, and has been struggling for a while to get his life back on track. Jackson has been taking care of his twin long enough not to care about himself, and can barely stand the spastic, overly-social brunette. When the two cross paths once again at the small vestibule of an ATM, the power shutting down and sealing electronic doors doesn't leave him much of a choice.

Ben knows there's something off about these twins, something deeper. Something his hyper mind isn't just making up. And he's right.

Mystify Me's a story about friendship, love, and obsession. Of broken souls being forced by the universe to meet up. Of beauty, sex, and humor, but more than anything—a story about life.

CINEMATIC EXPERIENCE: All readers and good writers know that a scene is not about what you read, but what you see. This book has been written not only based on that principle, but making sure our readers will go from a reading experience to a screen, right inside their own minds.

More than a fiction novel, this book feels like a window through which you can explore the life of real people. Beyond the realistic descriptions of the scenery, there are sentences, even just words, that can get you inside the head of the main characters without letting you inside their backstories, inside parts of them they don't want you to know, they don't want anyone else to know. Also, a distinct sense of untied ends surrounds certain chapters. Not every conflict is resolved, because real life does not always give you closure on everything and even when it does, it's a process. This novel explains these things once you've read it in its entirety.

On the technical side of things, the writing is alluring and it really does show instead of telling. Every word has been chosen carefully, and even though that's a rather obvious aspect since the beginning, it does not feel forced, because it paints a very specific picture of every situation. Maybe some paragraphs are left almost undeveloped, specially regarding a rather minor character that is only present for a couple of chapters, but it still says enough, with the right emotion, to make you see them. Also, every part of the text hands you enough information to know what's going on, but withdraws just the right amount to keep you reading. Maybe the most terrible thing about this style is that it really is a cinematic experience. You can see even the most heartbreaking and traumatic of scenes in your head.

At last, but not least, as an LGBTQ+ book, it's amazing. It, simply put, expresses certain group's experience with such raw detail that it's impossible not to put it down for a minute and cry if you have gone through something similar. I know I will forever remember that one sentence that made me realize something about myself.

Give it a read, that's all I can say really.

Overall this book has got to be one of the best I have ever read. It was like everything the author(s) put into it made it amazing it was easy to keep along with the story and it wasn’t like hard to understand how one event led to another. The grammar used made me really happy because it was like perfected and i think thats something phenomenal. The plot in general was amazing and i loved every second of when i read this.

I was a bit skeptical of this book at first. Although I was interested in the idea of a book as a cinematic experience, I wasn't sure if it was going to live up to my expectations. And I was correct...it has far exceeded them! I couldn't believe how complex, emotional, and real this story turned out to be. I felt such a bond with the characters and fell in love with this story! I assure you there is no other experience quite like this one!

I loved reading this book! it was different from all others that I have read before (in a good way). There was a lot of good character development and I found myself immersed as I continued to read it. From the songs that fit perfectly with the chapters to the different POV's. Reading this book has been an emotional roller coaster but it is definitely a must read!

The writing itself was great. I loved how it really created its own little world with characters that I loved and I never wanted to put it down. I just think that it is a really nice book that has had so much effort and detail put into it. It certainly has its own thing going for it. I love it.

Rating: 3.5 stars rounded up to 4

“Head for the lighthouse, Jackson. It will be painful; your joints will hurt, and you will feel too tired to continue swimming. But as... bloody cheesy as that metaphor may be—it is always there. You don’t have to drown.”

This was an intriguing read! With songs listed to go with each scene, this truly is a cinematic experience! The story follows characters Jack and Ben after their lives collide and they become roommates in New York City. This frenemies to lovers story kept me turning the pages with it’s compelling character relationships and storyline. I thought this would just be a fluffy romance book, but it was so much more than that.

The number one thing I loved about this book was the depth behind the characters, especially Jackson and Cal. Their stories were so well thought out and I just wanted to find out more and more about their past as the pieces came together. Every character has their own struggles and it was handled in a pretty realistic way. I was just rooting for everyone to heal and find happiness throughout this book. Some scenes were a bit too spicy for my personal taste, but I get why some people look for that in an adult romance story.

As much as I loved the story, I did have some issues with the writing. The book starts with each chapter being separate perspectives, but then suddenly each paragraph is a different perspective. I found the story difficult to navigate at some times because of this, especially when most characters in this book are male so there’s a lot of “he” being thrown around. This even happened with minor characters that were only in the book for a small amount of scenes. There was also some questionable terminology that made me uncomfortable, for example calling addicts junkies and multiple uses of the word r*tarded throughout the book. I also found the pacing to be a bit off, and I felt like the story could have been condensed a bit. It just felt like a longer read that was necessary for the plot. Also, I thought the epilogue was unnecessary to me and I didn’t understand why it introduced 4 new characters instead of giving us an update on Jack and Ben.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read that I would recommend to anyone looking for a well thought out queer romance book. Just be aware of some darker themes such as sexual/physical abuse and drug use/addiction.

Beautiful, dark and heartbreaking. The characters have an awesome growth during the novel and I appreciated that. Also the rep was really good and, yes, some could think there’s an unrealistic touch regarding the number of queer couples. Honestly I can agree that it’s not the norm and it unlikely happens. But from experience I can say this exists and even if it is not everyone’s reality it is some people’s. Some social circles are just mostly LGBTQ and that is also valid and should be represented.
This is a really good story that should definitely be talked about more!

OMG I JUST LOVE IT. I have finished the book today and i ran to write this. SO AMAZING, SO SENSITIVE AND HOT TOO. I love the characters, my favorite by far is Curt, but i love Ben's transformation across the story. Great work, i deeply recomend it.

PS: I am not a native english speaker, so i used a translate eventually for some words, but the reading is so fluid that if you are inmerse in it you really understand everythig by the context, so wonderfull to make your vocabulary grown.

An amazing read I had enjoyed all the way through! It's not your typical romance story in the LGBTQ genre and yet it's everything I imagined! Ben and Jackson stick out the most to me as us Jackson's love story! In short, I will be recommending this to my friends. Bravo!

First of all let me just say that I truly did love this book. The characters were fascinating especially Caleb. The reason I wouldn't give it all 5 stars is simply because of the confusing POV changes but other than that I really do recommend this book I got it from freefirefiction for free and it's a very fun way to pass your time in quarantine

This is easily one of the best books I've ever read. The playlists, hand-crafted scenes and wonderful descriptions make it feel like a movie---a brilliant one. The character development is written excellently and readers will feel immersed in the world that these authors have created, like they're going through the characters' journeys with them. The plot is well thought out, and there are several details hidden here and there that are pure genius. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and 1000/10 would recommend.

It’s an amazing book.. The characters and the emotionally driven storyline has made me fall in love with the book. From the moment I started reading it I’ve been pulled deeper and deeper into the little bubble created by the characters and never wanted to put it down.. It brings out raw emotions and helps to understand more about their world. The storyline is unique and different from other books I’ve read. Do read it... It’s awesome ❤️

I loved this story. I didn’t even notice time going by as I read, I was totally engrossed.

This is an LGBT+ story with very complex characters with really good character development. This story is packed with angst, which normally stresses me out, but I found it so well done. This book really has it all, I totally recommend checking it out!

My one main criticism is of one character arc: I completely adored Callie, but I felt as though her PTSD kind of just vanished after she realized she is transgender. As much as I want to see her thriving, I think that that could have been explored a bit more. I had hoped for a moment where her and Jackson could have talked about what had happened to Jackson in his past, and how that effected the two of them.

So happy that y'all could go from writing on the internet, to actually selling book as a published work. This story places you head on in the minds of the characters. You can feel that you're actually there in the adventure of their lives. Also, this book had me laughing out loud. I didn't "lol" expressionless, actual ugly cackling took place

This book is something else.
The characters are complex. The details are so precise, written with such an impeccable realism. It pulled at my heart’s strings more often than I’d like to admit.
I love that book reminds that freedom of choice who to be or who to love is not so free and was even less free just a few decades ago.

I have read the book on Wattpad and I can truly say I enjoyed every bit of it. I got so invested in it emotionally and in every other way and couldn't wait for an update, I recommend it to anyone who wants a contemporary touch, with equal parts drama and fluff that will tug at your heart strings.
