I was hoping for a bit more of an autobiography along the theme of 'Dauntless' as it is a fairly cool name, and, not everyone can write well or offer valuable insights on niche subjects. But everyone has come from somewhere, everyone has a story that they can share if they look back at their life and think about the moments of their childhood and teenage years that they remember best and most strongly shaped them as the person they became.
I'm confident such a book would have been worth more than what we ended up with.
Aside from the first few pages the book is really just a very basic overview of several subjects spread throughout 199 pages, 13 chapters and countless sub chapters.
I can't recommend the book if you're looking for a detailed level of analysis of any given topic, nor can I recommend it even if you just want to know a little bit more about Marcus, because of how the book is written the actual substantial content of the book is much less than it's 199 pages. It's a shame because the quality of a book is not determined by it's page number, you can do a lot with 199 pages. But if marcus thinks that the handful of paragraphs or pages on the topics he addresses, is sufficient to say anything meaningful about them, he does not understand or appreciate thorough analysis.
It's certainly not a replacement for directly reading Evola, Spengler, or an exercise/training/nutrition journal, or consultation with an exercise/training/nutrition expert, but, in fairness, neither does it claim to be any of these things, yet, neither does it expand upon the theme of 'Dauntless' beyond the very first few pages.
Some people despite professing nationalist, anti-left, anti-modernity or just ethno-centric/pro European perspectives, just aren't going to ever read the likes of Evola, Spengler or even the writings of a nationalist like William Luther Pierce.
Would reading Dauntless be better than those people having read nothing? than them only stimulating their thinking by listening to youtubers, watching television, talking with people on the street and reading newspapers? Probably.
But can we set a higher standard than that?
There are several grammatical, spelling and subheading (from page 64-65 for example) errors as well as unsourced claims, but that's the least of the books shortcomings.
There is worse and less specific advice you could take on training and nutrition from someone, but when those subjects are taking up a quarter of the first half of the book and the author is an expert on none of them, it's a waste of paper and ink.
The only value I think you could get from this book is if you had absolutely zero knowledge on training and nutrition and wanted a very basic overview with a pinch of alternative politics chucked in.
But even then, there's nothing you can really get in the book that you can't get just by watching his Youtube videos. Having read the book, I'd say just watch his videos.
There are many things to critique, but to say the least, it's lacking narrative, lacking expertise and lacking personality.
If I'm to be kind, It's assertive, short and unpretentious, it certainly doesn't attempt to make any sophisticated or detailed arguments.
His politics are defensive and Nativist as opposed to offensive and imperialist. So it's hard to find any cause to dislike him as a person unless you're a deranged leftist, but you can't give a kid an A+ when his work is garbage just because he's a nice kid.
I'm not critical because I'm generally against the golden one or people on his 'side' politically or socially, I like a lot of his stuff and I'm far closer to his side than I am to the modern left. But if progress in all things meaningful is a sincere goal, such criticism is needed here with this book.
It's useless to go on and on about standards of appearance and aesthetics to completely forget or ignore standards of writing and editing.
If he had neither the time, inclination nor ability to properly interpret the ideas of previous anti-modernist/nationalist thinkers, the least he could have done was give a recommended reading list so that people who want something more substantial but don't know where to look for it don't come away from this book possibly thinking that this is the height of nationalist/pro European literature.
This is mostly just a collection essays and short thoughts around a number of different topics, many of which Marcus covers on his youtube channel, The Golden One. These include weight training, diet, martial arts, philosophy, nationalism, religion, etc...
The content itself is good, but none of the topics go into more than just a surface-level overview. I found myself nodding along, but not getting many new insights. The strongest section of the book was the introduction, and a whole book written in that style would have been more engaging.
Three stars + 1 for The Golden One. I hope Marcus writes again, but on a more focused topic and with at least one pass from a style editor. Something more autobiographical would be interesting, too. Good first effort.
I am a follower of Marcus Follin, and I enjoy him as a role model in my life. When I bought this book I was expecting to be able to read his philosophy and pull from it what I feel like I could administer to my own life.
There were some good points in this book, some things I agreed with, others I did not. That is not a problem to me, I enjoy reading the opinions and philosophy of people I may not align with all the time, it strengthens my ideals and own philosophies.
The reason I gave this book two stars was because it felt like there could be improvement on Marcus' part. The book had a lot of words that were very unnecessary, and I think he would benefit from utilizing a professional human editor. I understand people do not want their message to be altered or censored, but in this case an editor would have made a huge impact.
Example of what I mean; if you read this book you will see "It is of paramount importance..." written on almost every page.
I still am a fan of his, but I hold true to this review. I really hope he reads this review, and benefits from it by improving his process for writing in the future. It would have been nice to also have more consistent chapter lengths. The first chapter is almost 50 pages, and the book is 199 pages, but there are 13 chapters, which means the 1st chapter is 1/4 of the whole book. If he organized his ideas better it would be easier to absorb in my opinion, but I am not a professional by any means this is coming from an avid reader's perspective, and my own observations!
If you are a fan of his, and are interested in this book it could be worth checking out, form your own opinion of it, and challenge my opinion if you feel I am out of line. I welcome it.
The perfect book to give a young man, or even an older one who is not taking care of himself. By following the advices in this fine book one can become a hero.
I read this book up until about the last two chapters but I did not finish reading it. I found the chapter on fitness to be the most interesting, which makes sense because it is the authors foremost area of expertise. The rest is totally boring and unoriginal. The political and social commentary is basically just a bunch of random alt-right talking points. Don't get me wrong, I love The Golden One. His youtube channel, his brand and everything he stands for. He has inspired me to lift weights and I look up to him as a role model for masculinity. That being said, I don't think he is a very good writer or intellectually original.
Not neccessarily a book, more like a compilation of the main teachings of The Golden one. These are helpful and clearly distinctive and worth a read though. I'd even say that his teachings are mandatory for all western men. At times it was hard to read certain chapters due to the fact that they were either too short to make a compelling argument or the language used was a bit too simple to describe more complex ideas.
Anyway, Follin is truly a guiding light and an absolute beast to have on your team during these decadent times, so just reading it to support him is mandatory.
Absolutely a Great book to read ! Mandatory reading for any Man who feels lost or without purpose in life.
I am French and very thankful for being able to read this at 23 years old. I wish i could read it 10 years ago. There is many things I want to say but I will keep it simple.
Dauntless is a simple but effective guide about being a Man. This book is a proper starting point for any young men - or even boys in some ways - who cares about themselves, their families, people, their country and their culture.
As he did for me, this book will surely set you on The Path Of Glory !
I am waiting for the next edition and longing for the translated version to come up, since men I know - who need to read Dauntless - will not read it in English.
Finally, Dauntless is the best present you can offer to young men of your communities. They will thank you later.
Unordinary book for unordinary times. I really wish i had this book when i was 15/16 years old, it would have given me a priceless kickstart in life.
As for the book itself, the structure is more like a guide with easily digestible topics and presentation in a light that you can hardly find compared to mainstream beliefs. From training, through spirituality and to philosophy it highlights virtues that most men should aim at and strive to achieve(personal opinion). Also, Dauntless is focused primarily at young men but everyone can gain value from reading it. I would personaliy recommend it to women as well.
Very nice book. I've absorbed it in a few days. Great guide for the young ones and a welcome addition to the knowledge of the older ones. I lent it to a friend who has a very different opinion than Marcus, but he also liked most parts of the book. The author does not urge you to believe in the same principles as he does, but explains his worldview. This is very helpful for the fathoming of your own principles. As an addition it's always nice to support people like Marcus who are suppressed and censored by the media and tainted by prejudices.
I can proudly say that this book is what i expected from The Golden One, whose teachings helped me get my life in order when i was a teenager without much guidance in life or an idea of what i wanted to do. I recommend everyone in such a circumstance take this book for a spin, you will not regret it
I skipped the vast majority of this book because the information in it was irrelevant. The parts I did read though I found disappointing. I wish this book was available in e-book format because now I paid for the paperback book and to get a shipped but wouldn't have purchased if I had viewed the e-book beforehand.
A profound book containing both infinite wisdom and a incredibly meaningful perspective. Only wish I had read this book as a young man but remain grateful and indebted to the author for at least having read it and not missed this inspirational opportunity. Gratitude.
Fantastic book that sets up a young male on his journey into adulthood. Very helpful when it comes to mentality, health and mindset. Minor language errors due to the author not being a native English speaker but it's nothing serious and does not impact readability.
I recommend this book to young men still growing up and to fathers who want to guide and inspire their sons. This text contains ages old wisdom and shows a path to honour and glory, instead of degenerate modern lifestyle that is being glamorized by Hollywood and the mainstream media.
Bought back in 2019 upon first release. This book is a must have for the questing young male who needs a handbook for life in general. 5 stars does not do this book justice.
