Georgia Snow likes to play it safe. She never takes chances. She prefers the safety of her snug, banal life. In her entire forty-two years, she has never done one risky thing. When her mother dies, Georgia is devastated. Then she finds out that her mother has left her a bucket list. To honor her mother’s memory, Georgia decides to fulfill her mother’s wish—traveling to Amsterdam, Canada, and Antarctica. Along comes Eliza Cumming. Eliza is the opposite of Georgia. She is a free spirit and adventure is her middle name. She is also the woman Georgia’s mother had hired as a life coach and traveling companion for Georgia. Georgia knows better than to fall in love with Eliza. Their relationship would never work. It’s too risky, too hard, too late, too…everything. But what Georgia doesn’t know is that love always finds a way.
Saxon Bennett is an admitted bibliophile and has the bookcases to prove it. Her favorite book is Harriet the Spy. She grew up among the pine trees of Washington where she learned to be a Keeper of Odd Knowledge with a special liking for new words - the queerer the better. She has a penchant for inspirational quotes - the more motivational the better. A serious aficionado of pie, she also drinks a lot of coffee and tea - especially when she’s writing, which she does every day. Saxon is a parent and a wife—two things she never thought she’d be - and she writes blogs about her family in the style of Erma Bombeck. In her next life she wants to be a professional snowboarder. She likes to grow flowers and tend to her pond. Jelly beans, gummy bears and licorice are her favorite candies. An avid walker with a goal to walk every street in her small town, she hits the pavement each morning. To keep herself limber, she does beginner yoga. She’d like to learn to meditate but her mind is as restless as a squirrel trapped in a box. As an amateur seamstress, she is endlessly trying to create the perfect butch purse. Her favorite quote is “Man plans, God laughs.” Saxon is the author of fifteen novels. Her book Family Affair won the Goldie for General Fiction in 2009. She won the Alice B. Reader Award for her body of work in 2012. Her second book in the Family Affair trilogy entitled Marching to a Different Accordion won a Golden Crown Literary Award for general fiction in 2012. Her book In the Unlikely Event is the final book in the Family Affair trilogy. All her books are available at Amazon and Bella Books in both print and electronic format. She has also written two books with her partner Layce Gardner and they are More than a Kiss and Crazy Little thing. Check them out on Amazon.
I liked the premise of this, on kindle unlimited, but found the chemistry and relationship itself ultimately to be flat. I also hated the forced and contrived black moment.
Georgia is 42, but I swear at one point in the book they say she is 37? There were quite a lot of these little inconsistencies inside, with repetitive information being spilled and respilled and yet spoken like it is new information, despite the same thing being said on a previous page. So it really started to do my head in, that the characters would speak about something as if enlightened, when they previous had the same thought or conclusion. That coupled with the lack of chemistry and character development, and a poorly formed black moment with a finale 'meet cute'. I can only give this a 2, and even then I think I am being generous.
Anywho, Georgia has lived her life very safe and "stodgy". While her mother was a free spirited adventurer! Her dear Ma has recently passed on, but left a Will stating she needs to get out of her comfort zone and has hired her a life coach to sort out her fears and kickstart her life, anew. Enter Eliza, at least 10 years or more her junior, early 30 I think they say, and is free spirited as well, full of light and positivity and support for the trapped Georgia...
However despite Georgia constantly being called stubborn, closed off and 'stuck in her ways', she ultimately goes along with Eliza and her mothers plan really easily. There's the smallest amount of objection from her, but it doesn't last long and is far too easily changed by the bubbly Eliza. So it never did ring true. Everything just sort of happens, because the writer says it does. You never feel it.
They set off on their whirlwind adventure to see Amsterdam, get a tattoo, cross a giant suspension bridge in Canada, and finally go to Antarctica. Along the way the two talk and get to know each other. They share their pasts and fears. Plus some funny silly moments. But neither ever really comes off as particularly likable. Let alone compatible.
Yes we do find out Eliza has a lot more depth than previously thought, but even she admits she's never really been in love... So it's comes off as forced when the two decide
The emotional connection for the characters was just not there for me. Plus I thought it was in desperate need of finer editing.
Dang it, I really need to write reviews closer to when I finish books.
My [insert a large number her that reflects the number of books read by this author/these authors]. Been a while since I read a book by these authors. I've read more by both than separately, though I've also read some by Saxon by herself.
This book stares a 40+ year old woman whose mother just died. She, the 40+ year old woman, has spent a life timidly living a "small" life, working in a job she hates for a boss she hates, and never joining her mother on any of her wild world wide travels (after a certain age, that is). Mother is dead, and will indicates that Georgia Snow, the main character, will get mother's full expansive estate after fulfilling some terms and conditions. Namely: going on trips outside USA. I'm not 100% sure if the travel companion/life coach is something the lawyer tacked on or if in will, but the trips will be conducted and lead by another woman.
Book follows them to various places, like Amsterdam, Vancouver, Antartica, etc. And, along the way, they develop a romantic relationship.
Despite my inability to write a review immediately after reading; and therefore my inability to write much, I do recall the book, and do recall enjoying the book, loving the book.
4.5 stars - This book really got into me. I think I could see a lot of myself in Georgia, but I don't think I could ever have been quite so… able to accept the need for adventure as she was. (Most of my adventures were because there was a Really Good ReasonTM to go through them. And, because of that Really Good Reason, it felt natural and less adventurous than I think they seemed to those outside my head.) In any case, it was fun to see the different cities they visited together, fun to get to see Georgia and Eliza stretch and help each other, and it was fun to see how seemingly-inprobably it was resolved.
I did deduct a half-star for something that seemed weird to me: where a character was reading another of these authors' books. I found that exceptionally distracting, for whatever reason. But other than that, it was a pleasant journey, and fun to get to know our main characters and see them getting to know each other
I knew this was going to be another book I was going to love by Bennett and Gardner by the second paragraph. Since I don’t give spoilers, you will have to read it for yourself. Trust me, you will be glad you did. It isn’t just the story, the dialogue or the depth of the characters that they build that gives me a wonderful adventure in my mind. Their combined wit provides scenes and situations that have me laughing aloud, whether I am in a room all by myself or sitting outside in my back yard for all the neighbors to wonder. And you will find nuggets of wisdom throughout that will have you pondering them long after the last word. It’s a fun, thoughtful, witty and romantic journey, and I loved every step.
There really wasn't anything to dislike about this story. At the beginning Eliza seemed a bit of a flake but she turned into the perfect match for Georgia. The things they did and the traveling that occurred in this book was hilarious given both personalities. The determination by Georgia to find her true love made quite an impact on me. Women sometimes are afraid of finding their love. Eliza figuring the thought process of Georgia was outstanding. Knowing Georgia would want to finish her mother's bucket list and actually going to the end of the earth to reconnect with her true love really enhanced their story.
It sometimes takes an almost a life time to come out of your self made shell. But when you do then hopefully you can find that someone to share it with you. The authors have created a story to hopefully help someone enjoy the reading and themselves. I know I did! Enjoy!
I loved this book. Adventure and a sweet love story. You can always count on Lance and Saxon this duo for a great book. Highly recommend this book. Thanks
I found myself laughing repeatedly at the fabulous dialog in this book. The travel tips were priceless as were the location descriptions. After reading this book I feel like I need to go see some of those places.
I loved Risky Love. It’s just the kind of book to remind to get out of the house and do something. When you push yourself outside your comfort zone you can achieve anything.
I really enjoyed reading this book, it was funny, loving and just plain old good. I think I will read it again, because I live reading books where two people get to know one other and fall in love😍
Cute travel log / romance with a small amount of angst. The story arc is a little choppy in spots with a succession of vaguely connected vignettes ranging from serious to zany. Overall a decent read with a heart warming, if very chilly, reunion at the end.
