A sacred priestess of the ancient Womb Rites, Mary Magdalene was at the center of a great and enduring Mystery tradition, one that touched on a stream of perennial spiritual wisdom as old as humanity. Worshipped as the human embodiment of the Goddess, the earthly Sophia, her womb was the spiritual luminatrix that anointed and empowered Jesus, transforming him into the Christ. As a priestess of the Goddess, Mary Magdalene knew how to embody the light and the dark, how to harness the magic potency of sacred sexual energy, and how to cleanse, awaken, and resurrect the soul. Yet, even though she sparked the creation of a worldwide religion, her story and teachings have been forgotten.
Unveiling the lost left-hand path of the Magdalene, the Feminine Christ, authors Seren and Azra Bertrand explore how this underground stream of knowledge has been carried forward over the millennia through an unbroken lineage of Womb Shamans, Priestesses, Oracles, and Medicine Women. They explain how the Magdalene Mysteries, symbolized by the Rose, have been encoded in Gnostic codices and gospels and in the highest art, literature, and architecture of many ages, including most significantly the Ghent Altarpiece. They examine Mary Magdalene’s connection to moon wisdom, sacred harlot archetypes, and goddesses in many traditions, including Isis, Inanna, Asherah, Lilith, and Jezebel, and look at shamanic, tantric, and Cathar expressions of sacred feminine mysteries as well as the Witch and Templar roots of Robin Hood and Maid Marian.
In this revelatory and magical text on the lost feminine mystery traditions of Mary Magdalene and the lineage of Sophia, the authors present encompassing theological, historical, mythological, and archetypal wisdom, with rituals and practices to initiate you into the Womb magic of the ancient priestesses and the path of the wild feminine.
This reviewer received a review copy of this book. This full book, with 120 black and white illustrations, plus a 16-page color insert, is packed with information to absorb. Each of the 32 chambers (chapters) could be a book in itself as the subject matter is so rich and interesting. Without writing a 560 page review it is hard to capture the fullness of this work, so here are just some comments. Early Christianity had many stories that have been removed from the official church doctrines that many Christians are familiar with today. Among the many edits were references to early goddess worship in the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible, and the stories of the women in the life of Jesus. Mary Magdalene was arguably the wife of Jesus and the co-leader of Jesus’s ministry, before and after his death. Many times her story has been conflated with that of his mother Mary. Both women have been revered in Christianity, but always as individuals lesser than the patriarchal God-Jesus-Holy Spirit. This book details the story of how these two women because associated with Jesus, as well as their cultural roots and their esoteric training. It follows this thread of the female side of God from the earliest days of Christianity to the present, telling stories of secret societies, secret teachings, and coded messages in literature and visual arts. Though parts of this story have been told elsewhere, here is a complete version of the lineages through cultures over 2,000 years to the present day. Every aspect of western culture has been influenced by Christianity, whether one practices that religion or not. All have promoted the male side of Christianity and left the female story to innuendo and allusion. Now the full story is available to those who seek. Chamber 22 begins with a quote from Leonardo da Vinci: “There are three classes of people: those who see, those who see when they are shown, those who do not see.” This quote applies to the entire book. I highly recommend this well researched, well written, and well produced book.
This is a celebration of feminine power, sexuality and wisdom. Some may find it on the edge of impropriety. Explicit language and illustrations are abundant in this book. Times are changing and as we open to the divine feminine, we also return to our roots. At the very end, “Magdelens Prayer” moved me to tears.
Warning: In the introduction the authors state that the book is not meant to be reasonable or logical. I wish I would have known that before purchasing this book after learning a blogger used it as a reference.
They say that the name Mary was a common name and also [derives from a word for] a priestess title, and from there speculate a priestly role for a biblical Mary. That's like speculating that a mythical person named Clark might have been a clerk because his name was derived from a title. U_U
There are numerous false claims: i.e., Bast was a goddess of sexuality, and the Greek word ailurophos is associated with the word alllure.
Several other statements are given without any supporting evidence, making me wonder how much of this book is plain wrong. After a while, I stopped fact checking and keeping tally of errors.
The use of leaps in logic and weird assumptions left me very frustrated, but I grant two stars for some interesting information.
Illuminating and fascinating deep dive through the early, pre and the heretical branches of Christianity. Exploring the goddess, priestess and womb elements. I'd like to give it a full 5/5 but it's just so chaotically written. I read it front-to-back ,which it warned not to do, and came to the conclusion that the chapters were wildly out of order. Quite a heavy and jumpy read and I'm a fan of mythology, pagan, heretical and both east and western religion. The married authors have a lot to say, and I'm glad they are, but they could probably be more succinct about it
This book presented itself, according to Divine Time & Plan on my soul's path. Embodying deeper my soul connection and ancient lives with The Magdalenes - the synchronicities, the revelations and the sacred wisdom of The Feminine Christ Consciousness in this realm of Life, is of utmost purpose for the new era unfolding. The Left-Hand Path (Red Tantra) calls all the ancient priestesses to rise and serve ALL!
This book has been integral to a huge transformation in my life and helped further my intimate connection with Mary Magdalene. However somewhere 3/4 of the way through I felt like the pace was lost and I wasn’t as gripped. Fantastic book however and highly recommend!
Not since reading When God Was a Woman and Chalice and the Blade, have I been so excited to read alternate religious viewpoints. I struggled with some of the repetition and not always coming back to the point in descriptions but overall I really enjoyed it.
