True love. For a book. And that too a poetry collection. And that too for uplifting girls aand women. And that too with a powerful voice.

I am so impressed with this collection that I am going to recite this one line by line to the girls and women who need empowerment or not (they won't mind I guess!) because we women need to empower ourselves from time to time like we need to take bath, go the toilet or eat food from time to time as basic requirements.

No, I am not being sarcastic here, damn. This is something we all need and that's why this book is here! Even though there has been many amazing poetry collections in the same vein by Amanda Lovelace, Rupi Kaur, Noor Unnahar and the like, I still appreciate such poetry collections because we all know we need this as a basic requirement!

I am so glad that I love almost all the poems, so effectively written, so damn relatable as I constantly face the same 'as you are a girl', 'as you are a daughter' stuffs almost everyday in every situation, I needed this.

The lines are hard hitting and does tell the truth about the society how it treats a woman or a girl. No, it's just not about where you live or where you end up; it's about the women everywhere. No matter how developed or modern the world, your world, my world may seem, in some way or the other we face harassment, discrimination or hatred just because we are born as women.

The writing is savage, rightly so! It's all the angst and the urge to speak up that made the lines so alive!

Now I am so hyped up in the middle of the night feeling so empowered but not knowing what to do about it. Do I sound sarcastic? I still am not.
And I need to read something about confused women.

Jokes apart, it's a fabulous read!
Kudos to the author for such a wonderful strong collection! I loved every word of it. And wow, the cover. I still love pink. And there's nothing wrong in that. Thanks #NetGalley for the amazing ARC of #DearGirl

Dear Girl is not something that I would typically pick up, but between the pink cover ( my favorite color) and Netgalley’s new audiobook feature, I felt like I couldn’t pass it up. In 2020 I am striving to branch out into a multitude of genres, poetry being one of them.

“You’re cruelty is no match for my spirit.” I need to remind myself of this daily. Sometimes all it takes is one simple act of another to bring me to my knees.

For being quite short, this book produces an impactful punch to the gut. This book hit me in the feels more than just a few times.

“ You are told to quiet down, I hope you grow LOUDER! “

“Equality is not just about calling someone out, equality is about accountability.” This statement could not be any more factual , especially in the world today.

“Leaving someone you love is like leaving home and knowing you can ever return. “ In fact, it’s brutal.

“Your past lives with you, dear girl, but you are not your past.” But, man oh man does it come back to haunt you.

“ I wish I could hold you and say the world will protect you but I know it will not.” This is such a sad fact for our youth; our children.

“...You are alive, not for nothing, you are alive.” Please look in the mirror and tell yourself this every single morning.

“Dear Everyone: grab ahold of your voice, it is time to make a choice, to believe survivors, to pay us all the same, to give women of color equal access and opportunity; to protect the safety of trans girls everyday. Make the choice to change the climate. Make the choice to not stay silent, this is not the era of girls, this is the future of girls.”

I am an ally to everyone and I mean that whole- heartedly. I’m for equality no matter what race, identity, gender or religion you are. I am not here to judge. Therefore, unethical treatment in any way shape or form depresses me to the highest extent. No one can help the way they were born, please stop ridiculing others for things that are out of their hands to control. I could go on forever, in fact I could probably write my own version of “Dear Girl” and maybe call it something like “We are all human.”

A solid 4 ⭐️.

Thank you very much to Netgalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for allowing me to read this book In exchange for an honest review. This book was released on April 07, 2020. I strongly encourage picking it up.

The reason why I couldn’t give this book 5 stars is I feel like the rhyming became a bit unnecessary at times, and wasn’t really necessary. I also wish that their was more of a transition from one topic to the other.

ARC kindly provided in exchange for an honest review.

When you're feeling down, read this poetry collection. It's meant to uplift your spirit and to remind yourself that you're more than enough. You don't need to seek validation from anyone. We, as women, should unite and support each other. It's a promising debut poetry collection.

Dear Girl is a poetry collection with advice to girls. This poetry collection supports feminism. It mentions important issues like rape, racism, and gender.

This is my first time listening to a poetry book on audio and I know it will not be my last. Dear Girl was quick listen and I really enjoyed it.

The narration by the author, Aija Mayrock was wonderful. You could feel her feelings through the words and hear the emotion in her voice.

Thank you netgalley and Andrews McMeel Audio for providing Dear Girl in exchange for an honest review.

Before I start this review, I feel like we should all take a moment to acknowledge the poet who wrote this is 19 years old. I mean, what the heck? Why are people that are younger than me reaching success in life, who said this is fair? I feel like I'm very near to reaching my quarter life crisis.

In any case, I wish I could like this book more. Dear Girl follows the rupi kaur trend of short poems meant to empower women, meant to be posted on instagram and look pretty. Now, it's worth noting that I'm a fan of this type of poetry, I really am. I'm hardly one of those poetry elitists who think that the only poetry worthwhile is that written 100 years ago.

The problem is that Amanda Lovelace and Andrea Gibson simply do it better. Lovelace manages to take the cliche of warriors and princesses and make it fresh while Gibson really tackles politics and self-love. This book tries to do that but I can't stop comparing it to their works and feeling like Mayrock doesn't quite reach the standard.

Mayrock's work here feels very shallow. The messages are kind of banal and the writing itself doesn't do much to make it better. I mean, yes, this is an important message but it's been said so many times in this poetry that I can't say this is the collection I'd recommend.

All in all, this is her first poetry collection and I do believe that she will find her own unique voice and manage to write something that will be new and exciting. A huge thank you to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in return for my honest review!

What I'm Taking With Me
- I should read more poetry, I forgot how much fun it is.
- It's lovely that Mayrock includes lgbt+ people and pocs but like, it just feels so performative.
- Reading this in one sitting last night was nice.

Uni Adventures:
- This week was so exhausting and I think the fact that I go to sleep at 9pm drives my roommate crazy.

- The guy at the coffeeshop next to the dorms knows me, my work here is done.

- I finally found my favorite spot in the library! It's right next to all the art books, has tons of natural light, a fantastic view of the city and pretty much no one goes there.

- I celebrated Tu Bishvat by going to a Beit Midrash session with the people from the international school. A highlight from this would probably that moment when a guy dramatically said to me, "well, if I were to accept your claim, that would mean everyone should be a vegetarian" and I was like, "well, yes".

- Also that embarrassing moment when I confidently said that every Kosher law has a reason, we just maybe don't know it now only to have the Rabbi of the Beit Midrash stand behind me and say, "Kosher laws are laws that we follow without any logical explanation, they transcend our rational minds and have no reason".

- On the first practice Econ exam I did, I got 8/25 right. On the second one, I got 9/25 right. Today, I did another one and got 11/25 right. Now, in order to pass, I need 18/25 right. Should I panic now or wait until Tuesday?

- However, in my first practice exam, I felt a sense of dread by question 3. In the second one, I managed to get to question 11 before feeling like I'm a failure at everything. And today, I reached question 16 before wanting to cry! So yay, progress!

- My social life has literally reached rock bottom, up the the point that the only socializing I did this week was sit down and study with a friend. By study with a friend, I mean that we shared a table and were both with headphones studying.

-I'm announcing this here to hold me accountable. If I get less than a 90 on Ethics, I'm going to re-do that exam because I did not read so many books about Ethics for less than a 90.

Staying true to the book, my review will be in poetry form.

Dear Girl,

A collection of poetry
to bring you to tears.
Some you feel
Some you might never know,
while wishing you did.
I found myself clapping,
shouting yes this is true.
Rivers forming in my eyes
because I have worn these shoes.

****

Aija Mayrock's poems will connect
all women kind to another.
We have fought,
we have cried.
This our truth.
We must love each other,
love ourselves,
speak out for one another,
hold the candle,
hold the door.
Scream a little louder for the voices of the unsure,
the timed,
the scared,
the forgotten and the lost.

I cried. I connected. I smiled.

Well written, broken up into sections and 100% real.

Empowering and touching. Some poems were highly relatable and inspiring for women. However, some of them seemed a bit too generic. I felt like I have read that poem before in another poetry collection. This prevented me from connecting to them emotionally.

I am not really a fan of free verse but I found the poems quite impactful. However, some poems did sound like motivational sayings rather than poetry. Poetry is entirely subjective of course, so if you love free verse I recommend you try this collection!

Overall, a good poetry debut!

Dear Girl is the debut poetry collection from Aija Mayrock, and it is sharp, on point and, ultimately, empowering. The poems are brief, yet each resonated with me in a significant way, and I was left breathless by the strength and profundity that is packed into each carefully chosen word. Essentially, this collection is a call for women to rise up and be heard. Mayrock's is a voice that will continue to pierce our consciousness for a long time to come.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for this ARC.

"you might believe the words you speak are weak,
but the echoes of words
can start revolutions."

dear girl, as the author describes perfectly, is "a journey from girlhood to womanhood through poetry. it is the search for truth in silence, the freeing of the tongue, it is deep wounds and deep healing and the resilience that lies within us. it is a love letter to sisterhood.".

it's an incredibly impressive debut poetry collection that I found very empowering and touching, some poems even gave me chills reading them because a lot of the collection truly hits on the experience of growing up as a girl and a woman.

"grow wiser, grow deeper, but never grow up."

I found the poems a bit too repetitive at times, though at other times the repetitive nature of a lot of the wording made it even more impactful, and if you like me have read other feminist poetry collections before you might, like me, find some of the poems a bit generic at times.

it was overall, again as I said, a very impressive debut poetry collection though and one I wish I could give to a younger version of myself.

Dear Girl is one of the best poetry collections I've read in a long time. I've picked up quite a few poetry books the past month or so and Dear Girl really stands out from the rest. The poems are all very well written, super powerful. I feel like a good deal of poetry books have filler poems, but I didn't come upon any poems in Dear Girl that seemed like fillers or noticeable lesser quality. The whole book was very consistent in quality and I loved that.

Dear Girl 💝
"Dear girl,
You ask me what I wish for you.
I simply say -
Never allow any soul to clip your wings
You were not born a ember,
You were born a flame."
Thank you @netgalley and AndrewsMcmeel Publishers for giving me this review ARC!

Dear Girl is everything a person needs to hear from their loved one, their friends, family, lover, teacher, everyone ... But yet we only get to know it from Aija Mayrock 's heart-touching words✨
.
I agree this wasn't something revolutionary, not something no one has heard or read anywhere, but it is something that we are not told. It is something to be taught. It is something to be learnt. It is something we need to tell ourselves and others we care about, over and over!
.
Aija Mayrock's words felt so personal that it made me feel she was sitting just beside me, consoling that the world is not going to change for me but rather I need to grow! Grow stronger, grow mightier but never grow up!
.
She restored my spirits in such selected words and phrases that lasted only 45mins in audiobook but stayed in my mind. She motivated me in believing -Yes I'm important. Yes I'm true. Yes I have a purpose and Yes I am the FIRE🔥
.
she ends the book asking the readers if they got what they were looking for? But I would answer that I received something that I didn't know I needed. I received strength in the purest forms. I received care in the numerous 'Dear Girl' of her book💕

Dear Girl very much reflects the contemporary wave of feminism and #MeToo time and will resonate particularly with many young adult listeners, the demographic of the author. Aija Mayrock touches on topics like sexual harassment, rape, body image, misogyny, gender issues, intergenerational trauma, intersectional advocacy, and resilience. The strongest piece in the collection is Dear Boy.

This is not brilliant poetry. There is no shortage of clichés, though there are several strong moments of more original language. In audiobook format, the collection is elevated by the young author’s crisp, cadenced, committed spoken-word performance of each short piece. There is an affirmative, inspirational quality to her message and delivery that many will appreciate. And I’m often not fond of music or sound effects added to audiobooks, but it is done quite well in this production.

Fans of Canadian poet Rupi Kaur might also enjoy Dear Girl. And I look forward to hearing more from Aija Mayrock as her work matures. And cheer her on in her advocacy work as well.

I listened to an advance uncorrected proof of the unabridged audiobook via Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley. My review is unpaid and voluntary.

The book is a collection of poems which act as a conversation, a cry and a ray of hope and sometimes a reprimand from the author to numerous readers.
The book covers many grounds from sexuality, body image, consent to harassment, misogyny and sexual, physical and mental abuse. It might seem like a wide scope, maybe too many issues of society crunched up into a hundred pages, but this is literally what every woman goes through every day.
There are two things that I loved about the book and which really stood out for me. One is the appropriate level of storytelling; nothing is over-exaggerated; it is kept simple and truthful and naked, exactly as it is with no shrouds of metaphors in them for varying degrees. The second is that the poems aren’t meant to be a rant. They do portray the anger and the disappointment, but they are also inspiring. They talk of healing and empowerment and equality and being proud of surviving and talking about your own story.
It is driven by emotions that become more volatile as you read them more and more. I can’t say enough for this book so here is what I’ll say instead – if anyone asks me to describe poetry in its bare form with raw emotions that touch the soul, I will tell them to read this gem.

• Dear girl (by Aija Mayrock)

I got in this book without having any clue or any idea what this is about. 1st surprise to me was that the rhythm and beauty of short and apt poems

The beautiful lines and words were so inspiring and enlightening that it will make you feel more valuable.

Yes, that is the main point or agenda of inspiring books. But this book has it's own way of expressing the pain and overcoming them in such a compact way, being a reader and writer that was very helpful to me.

I was listening to this book and I couldnt stop myself from taking a deep breath every now and then, closing my eyes when things get tricky like they get in out daily life.

Being a girl, is tough. Going through many adversary and obstacles might have made us strong, but sometime we need a little voice of encouragement a single phrase or prose that make us believe in ourselves more, that make us happy that we are not alone. That all of the girls worldwide are fighting their own battle and all of us and each of us are beside each other to help and support.

English and Spanish review (3*75*)
This was provided by netgalley as an exchange for a honest review

I think I would've enjoyed more if I had read it with my eyes (the narrator Is amazing, though) , because in the book itself I could have done annotations throughout all the book because this is precious and important.

I, as a young girl who's entering to womanhood, really loved it and appreciate it. This talks about a lot of things us women have to go through all our lives. To the difference in the way we (girls) are educated to the way boys are; sexual assault, fat shaming, misogyny in general.

If you are sensitive about certain topics be cautious

Dear Girl is a set of poems dealing with the subject matter of Feminism and everything that goes with it. It almost remain of " the Witch doesn't burn in this one by Amanda Lovelace which was also about the subject matter of Feminism . This was a very quick listened and read since I read it along with listening to it. The narrator was really good since it was author of the book who was reading it.

This book of poems is beautifully empowering to females everywhere no matter what race, size, shape, age or beliefs! The poems are short but reach into your core and make you really think about them, about life, about the world!
This book encourages women to support each other and believe in each other and build each other up instead of tearing each other down.

Dear Girl by Aija Mayrock

3 stars

This is a poetry collection addressed to women. It's all about women and celebrating women. It's mainly a call to action as well as a calling out in complacency of how women often allow other women to be treated. I think Mayrock is probably a fantastic spoken-word or slam poet. I would love to watch her read some of these poems. That ability shines through a lot of the poems. I personally didn't love this collection. It feels like every other collection that is targeted towards feminism. This poetry collection has some great messages, but it doesn't really stand out to me. I would recommend it for poetry fans and readers who are specifically looking for poetry about feminism.

WOOOOOOOOOW WHAT AN AMAZING BOOK!!

Dear Girl it's a very powerful book and I need all the people, women and men, to read this book.

This is a book about all the love you can give and take, to yourself. I really think it is a very neccesary book to read. Has very powerful messages for women, for our mothers, sisters, partners, brothers, partners, fathers, with the aim of telling them that women have the same rights as everyone else.

Women are stars, warriors, beautifull, mothers, daughters, sisters, friends, girlfriends, heroines, powefull, smart, creative, etc...

This is going to be one of my favorite books of the year and please, read this book. You need it.

I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I listened to the book on audiobook which was read by the author.

Overall I enjoyed the book, as I do most poetry. I think reading the paper copy of the book may have been more enjoyable but it was also interesting to hear the authors version with emphasis on certain portions. The majority of the poems dictated a powerful message towards women and their equality and place in the world. Some of the poems were better written than others and had a stronger message.

I will look for more of her poetry in the future.
