In conducting interviews with North Korean defectors for The Faceless Ones: The Stories of North Korean Defectors with No Other Choice, there was a shared request among defectors: “Please ensure that my face is not shown.”
These are the Faceless Ones, who, despite their physical distance from their homeland, remain bound to families there that they left behind. In this way, their identities are still tied to an isolated state that has already made such aggressive claims on their personhood. Within North Korea’s state-sanctioned ideology, there is no legitimacy to the individual, only to the regime to which one belongs.
This book chronicles the stories of dozens of North Korean defectors. Told through the perspective of ordinary citizens, the Faceless Ones exposes the horrific human rights abuses taking place in North Korea and North Koreans' daily struggle to survive.
