Best known for the Amelia's Notebook series, her books are popular with teachers and children alike. Her picture book Barbed Wire Baseball won the California Book Award gold medal. I loved these books when I was in elementary school, but had no idea there were so many! I was surprised to find this on my library's shelf and was excited to dive back into the nostalgia of Amelia. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. I don't know if it was this book in particular or if this applies to the entire series, but it just didn't hold up. Although Maxine was the bully in this story, Amelia also came across as manipulative and judgmental. I wish I would have left this series in the past.

Bagaimana perasaanmu saat temanmu direbut orang lain? Ya, mungkin pertanyaan ini terlalu berlebihan. Kesan direbut seperti terlalu mengekang seorang teman. Tapi kadang kala kita mungkin pernah merasakan cemburu saat teman dekat kita, tiba-tiba menjadi lebih dekat dengan orang lain dan terlihat tidak memperdulikan kita lagi. Suatu hal yang lazim terjadi untuk anak-anak, atau mungkin juga pada orang yang telah dewasa--dalam hal umur.

Seperti halnya Amelia yang merasakan cemburu saat Carly, sahabatnya, semakin dekat dengan Maxine. Maxine adalah murid baru di sekolah, dia sangat modis dan berhati-hati soal rambut, kuku dan pakaian. Penampilan Maxine pun lebih seperti anak kelas 8 dibanding menjadi murid kelas 6. Dan semua itu membuat Amelia ketakutan Carly akan meninggalkan karena dia tidak keren, karena model rambutnya jelek, bajunya tidak modis, atau sepatunya yang membosankan.

Selain kegundahannya karena Carly, Amelia juga dibuat sangat marah dengan surat-surat jahat yang dikirimkan lewat lokernya. Dugaan Amelia, Maxine lah yang mengirimkan surat-surat itu. Sampai suatu ketika Carly dan Amelia bertengkar hebat, yang mengakibatkan persahabatan mereka pecah. Semakin hari, Amelia semakin yakin kalau Maxine memang jahat, namun dia kebingungan bagaimana menyampaikan hal itu kepada Carly, selain itu kedatangan surat-surat bernada jahat masih juga diterimanya.

Pertemuan Amelia dengan Leah, seorang teman yang masuk dalam urutan ke-3 dalam temen-meter, berhasil mengungkap siapa penulis surat-surat jahat itu, dan surprice-nya mampu mengembalikan persahabatan antara Amelia dan Carly.

Buku ini didesain dengan gaya buku harian, lengkap dengan font tulisan tangan dan garis-garis seperti layaknya buku tulis, disertai coretan gambar tokoh ataupun benda-benda kecil di sekitar tokoh. Sebenarnya pemikiran Amelia agak sempit dalam hal pertemanan, namun cara berpikir seperti ini lah yang sangat mungkin terjadi dalam diri remaja, mengingat kondisinya yang masih uncontrol dan labil.

Selain itu, buku ini juga menunjukkan kekhasan remaja lewat penceritaan yang blak-blakan dan penuh imajinasi. Bagaimana Amelia menunjukkan kemarahannya lewat tulisan besarnya atau coretan-coretan ilustrasi. Bagaimana dia membuat teman-meter yang memberikan urutan seorang teman. Atau keinginannya untuk membuat kliping berisi surat-surat yang ditemukan di jalan. Buku yang menarik!

Friendship takes center stage as the stylish new girl in school, Maxine, comes between Amelia and her best friend, Carly. As if that weren't enough, someone is slipping Amelia hateful notes. Her self-esteem takes some hard hits as Amelia tries to salvage her friendship with Carly without stooping to Maxine's level. Amelia handles the situation with such grace that readers will be silently cheering her on and urging Carly to realize the truth about Maxine. The handwritten style and frequent drawings will draw readers in; the realistic characters and situations will keep them involved.

This book is quite funny! Actually.. to me ALL amelia notebooks are hilarious! Amelia's best friend is carly! One part i like most is said "BIG BAD STUFF" Mosgrito bite(mosquito bite) cold hotdog sandwich, stuffy nose (sniff, sniff), my sister, cleo, sits next to me on the bus for the field trip and pukes(badness: 6), i get an evil note(badness:10), carly abandons me for maxine(badness:10)

i am in the 5th grade now and at the time i read this i was in the 2nd grade and in my class passing notes was big and so i went to my library and saw it and decided toread it and i liked it and wanted to read all of them and i think i read 5 of them.They are really good books.

OMIGOSH I LOVE THIS BOOK! At first i started getting mad @ carly cause she was totally ignoring amelia! BUT @ the end I STARTED LIKEING HER CHARCATER!
