On a journey to nowhere, an escape from the past, four travelers must confront the harsh realities of their chosen path. The terrain is treacherous; the supplies are low. But turning back isn't an option. Only death is behind.
Someone is following.
Others have tried this route. Many have gone; none have returned. Their only salvation, their only hope, lies at the end. But the end of the journey is not what it seems. Nothing is.
My name is David Kummer. I'm a young writer who leans towards horror, mystery, thrillers, and young adult fiction. My books are fast-paced, easy-to-read, with shocking twists and unpredictable endings.
My new series is The House on the Hill, a new type of haunted house trilogy focusing on one family and the small town under attack. It's creepy enough for horror readers, but character-focused and plot-driven, so it's perfect for anyone who enjoys a good mystery novel.
I grew up in Madison, Indiana, a small town on the Ohio River, with lots of history and settings around here that influence my books. Now I live in New Albany with my fantastic wife. When I'm not writing, I'm a full-time English teacher for 9th graders and I enjoy spending as much time as possible outdoors.
You may have read some great authors before and some fascinating books, but this is the first time you've had an experience like this. Try something and let me convince you.
David Kummer shows us what it takes to survive in Home! Four travelers traverse a desolate land in an attempt to flee an evil that stalks them. I love the mystery that Kummer establishes right off! Trying to figure out who the characters are and why they’re fleeing is a lot of fun, and builds towards a great twist later on. The characters were also well thought out and likeable (super important in a dystopian tale like this)! If you loved the mystery and suspense of The Maze Runner, definitely take a trip to the bleak world of Home!
This book starts out in an apocalyptic type world. We’re introduced to a group of four friends, one of which is very sick. Knowing that she can’t travel much farther, she decides to stay behind and one member of the group stays with her while the others continue on in search of “home.” When it’s time for him to continue on and find his friends, there are plenty of obstacles along the way. Will he make it home or fall before he can find it?
This book has plenty of twists and turns, leaving the reader to wonder if the group will ever truly find the place they are looking for or not. Each character has their own personality leaving a rich reading experience. This is the kind of book where you connect to the characters in a way that leaves you rooting for their survival.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving my review.
Thought-provoking, well-written, edgy, layered and unconventional.
An interesting story that is written, I believe, for the sole purpose of making you think. The author's short letters at both the beginning and end, envelop the story with some helpful context. After finishing this book I was left pondering both this short story and the longer story of our lives.
Favourite Quote: “But cause others to suffer and the hunted becomes no better than the hunters.”
I would like to thank "Voracious Readers Only" and author David Duane Kummer for my complimentary copy in exchange for my honest review.
An unusual tale of survival as a group journey through strange, dangerous wilderness, attempting to reach Home. Hunted by the terrifying Howlers, Art falls in love with dying girl, Lucy and strives to protect her. Separated from his friends, Art encounters various strange characters, including a group of mysterious children. The story flowed wonderfully and I found the plot original. The story, however, seemed brief, and I would have welcomed a longer version. I enjoyed this and will certainly watch out for this gifted author.
Different kind of story for sure, somehow I just couldn't put it down. It was like wandering around in your subconscious mind. Give it a try, that's all I can say.
This twisty suspense drew me right in. Formatting issues kept it from receiving 5 stars, but the unique world held my attention to the end. I expect to see more cool stories from this author.

Review: I couldn’t get into the book, so at 34% I had to DNF it. The book was ok, but I just couldn’t get into it and it was confusing me. I might come back to this book and read it again, but not for now.
This is not one of David Kummer's best books. I found it confusing, and am unsure exactly what it was about. Four friends have set out on a journey through inhospitable lands to try to find a place called Home. On the way, they meet with dangers and their lives are threatened. Many people have been on this journey before, but none have ever returned. Is this an allegory for life? They meet hostile people who try to kill them but also people who help them, too. The characters are rather flat, I found, except for the PoV character, who was more well rounded. The ending was strange and left me with a feeling of dissatisfaction. I have read many more books by this young author, and found them to be good stories with characters that I could relate to, but not in this case. There are also quite a lot of errors in it, as well as places where the writing could have been improved, especially the overuse of the word 'just', and Mr Kummer clearly does not know when to use lie, and when to use lay. A disappointing read.
I really enjoyed reading Home by David Kummer. It's different but in a really good way. Once again Mr. Kummer put me inside the book with the characters, I really felt like I was there. I don't want to give the book away, so I need to be careful, because I just want to tell you everything about it. Let's just say, I couldn't put the book down, having to know everything that was gonna happen next. Not a very long book, which is nice sometimes. This book has you in all sorts of emotions, especially being trilled and intriguing. I loved it.
This really is a great book to read, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.
I was given this book free through Voracious reader, which I'm glad I did because it was disapponting. The author allowed the characters to grow but the length if the story was to small. I like to loose myself in a good book. This one impossible to do that.

Big fan of dystopian worlds here, so when this came across my inbox, I jumped on it. This is a very fast read, but I honestly didn't want to put it down. While the author didn't go greatly in-depth with any of the characters, the world presented was enough to keep me interested.
A nondescript place: Home. What is Home? Why do they want to get there? What was so terrible about their previous location that they'll dare open ground with little water and the threat of Howlers?
I wanted to know all of these things. If you're looking for a quick bite of interesting, check it out.
I thought this was too short of a story. It was confusing to me and in my opinion didnt give enough of a back story. I felt like this story literally started in the middle of a whole story, we got no introduction, didnt reallybknow why they were running away from howlers, or even what was lucy dying of. The only part I felt was partly interesting was when they ran into drama with the howlers. I think that the purpose was supposed to shed light more on the journey. However, the story started slow, picked up and then flatlined towards the end. I didnt really find this to be the greatest short story.

This is a story that you need to jump into without knowing much about it. It doesn't tell you more than what you need to know for the immediate plot. And that plot is, in a word, trippy. There are a lot of sad moments and bits of grief to it. I'm not entirely sure what the ending means (though I have my suspicions). It did feel like jumping into the third act of a book, so it's definitely not one for people that like a lot of set up.
The biggest part, and probably the most confusing, is the metaphor. This is the kind of book where you could argue what Home is and whether or not it's real. There's arguments over whether it's positive or negative, what it's like there. Honestly, the philosophical circles you could go around will last longer than the time it takes you to read it. I read it in less than an hour.
If you like clear, concise books with concrete endings, this isn't the one for you. However, if you're a fan of weird trippy dystopian fiction with hidden meaning, this is right up your alley.
This book is very interesting but also very confusing. I’m not sure exactly sure what the book was about. If you like confusing, futuristic and survival books, then I completely recommend this book for you.
This was an unusual story to read, well written and thoughtful; and emotional at times. This is the story of 4 friends who set out to find 'Home' and they face challenges along the way.
"Lucy peered up at the sand walls with a childlike wonder that never seemed to leave her." "Was it possible to exist out here and enjoy life? Could you be in one place for as long as him, learning to cope and thrive?" "Each night, the darkness seemed denser, impenetrable, our vison less effective."
This young author has earned a place on my library shelf. A busy college student who finds time to write and produce his stories in his spare time. Well done David Kummer.
I always find Kummer's stories interesting, and unique, and Home is no different. This story takes the readers on the journey along with the characters. The journey, however, is just part of it. It's more than just surviving, but searching for something, some place to call home. This story has well-developed characters, and as always, the author has a grand writing style. The author makes the readers care about what is happening, and filled with twists and unpredictability. I look forward to reading more by this author.
I really had to force myself to continue reading this story and I have to admit that I don't get it. It's boring and hardly anything happens. A story of 4 people travelling through a desert with 1 of them really sick and the narrator in love with her. The ending makes no sense to me and I hated the lay out right from the start. I suppose this is meant to be artistic, but please give me a good story any day. I received a free ARC through "elite reviews" and this is my honest review.
Mr. Kummer has written a fun little adventure, with excitement and interesting characters. My only complaint is that it’s too short. It’s not even a novella, more like an extended scene. I’d like to him to do a novel so we can see more plot, and even more action.
This was... jarring. Both in the message, and its presentation. I still haven't finished wrapping my mind around this tale, but that probably wouldn't be the desired end goal anyway. Bottom line: It made me think, and that is always worth a few stars in my book.
This book was a wild ride of emotions. I loved the characters, their relationships with each other, and the heart wrenching conversations. The author did absolutely amazing and I’m very excited to read more of his work.
I can’t even express how much I enjoyed this book! Once I started, I didn’t stop until the end...and what an ending!! A promising young author for sure, I would love to read more of his work.
