As the Tarot incarnation of Justice, tracking down the outlaws of the psychic community and delivering them to Judgment is Sara Wilde’s business...and business is good.
Now a rival syndicate known as The Shadow Court seeks to impose their own brand of justice, restricting magic to only the richest and most influential psychics, while stripping power from all the “undesirables” along the way. Their top priority? Hit Sara Wilde, guiding light of psychics everywhere, where it hurts…
Right in the heart.
From the crackling fires of Burning Man to Sara’s even more incendiary high school reunion, the path is never more twisted than when you follow The Wayward Star.
Jenn Stark is a Golden Heart award-winning author of paranormal romance and urban fantasy. It's another action packed story of psychic fun! Sara reunites with classmates at her high school reunion! Then later encounters old friends at the Burning Man event! I don't know if I wasn't in the right mood or if the story was off, but it took me much longer to read it than all the previous Wilde books! 3.5 stars!
Every time this woman puts pen to paper -so to speak- wonders occur. And this time was no different.
Continuing the Wilde Justice series with this slightly lighter edition, Jenn Stark once again brings us back into the world of the Arcana Council. Although a large part of the storyline is whimsical in nature, we are still faced with the ominous Shadow Court. They are now starting to make more overt, more perspicuous moves. And the Arcana Council, if it wants to prevail, must move out of the shadows and into the light. And with that realization comes necessary mobilization. They need to step up.
But in anticipating how they will do that, well, it's Sara Wilde, so you know it won't be in any boringly conventional way. No, not when our wonderfully outrageous Nikki Dawes persuades Sara to go to her high school reunion. After all, it's the perfect place to bring the Council into the public eye, wouldn't you say?
There is the usual insanity, coupled with mystery and action galore, as is always the case when Sara is on the scene. And with Armaeus still not remembering their shared past, things are even more conflicted and disquieting for her. Trying to get just one step ahead of the Shadow Court is proving to be one of the more harrowing tasks Sara has had put before her by the Council. And having Armaeus take an active role is both exhilarating and depressing, but most of all, confusing. Bring in Eshe, and you have brought the fantastical into the storyline.
I don't want to give away any of the story, so I intend to stop here with the hints. The one thing I will say is, Jenn Stark never disappoints. In this addition to the series, there may have been a bit more whimsy, which helped lighten the mood a bit, but don't let that fool you. There is still plenty of intensity that will keep you enthralled. And plenty of questions left without answers. At least not just yet. And I wouldn't have it any other way.
Once again, Jenn Stark, you have succeeded in enriching this series, making it worthy of immediate notice once the book is released. You have definitely placed Immortal Vegas/Wilde Justice at the very top of my favorite series list, actually replacing the previous number one. Sorry, JY!
As usual, Excellently Done, Jenn Stark, Excellently Done Indeed.
This was given to me as an ARC. My review is in my own words and of my own volition. As always.
Another excellent book in the Wilde Justice arc in the life of Sara Wilde. We saw the introduction of the Shadow Court in the last book and we learn more about their objectives in this book. Sara realizes just how much of an interest they have really taken in her life and for how long. Betrayals from unexpected sources shows just how difficult the task ahead will be as everything and everyone has to be questioned.
Along with a real blast from her past with her high school reunion taking place, we see a different side of a few of the members of the Arcana Council in this story. The Council now has to decide if they will leave the shadows and fight the real evil happening. The usual sidekicks are there and always bring a laugh to the books. But poor Brody! He needs a vacation.
As always, there are several sub-plots going on at once, but Jenn Stark does a great job in keeping them tight and interesting, blending them seamlessly into the main plot. I especially enjoyed the mention of climate change in this book (even if the world is fictional, it demonstrates just how catastrophic the impacts can be).
Also, loving the evolution of the Magician, and how he and Sara are rebuilding their relationship. Sara is finally starting to believe in her strengths and leaving her doubts behind. This all makes me very interested to see how their relationship continues to grow and change in the upcoming books, especially since it seems that Armaeus will be in the field a lot more :)
Enjoying this series and can't wait for the next book. Jenn Stark can always be relied on to provide a few hours of happy reading. I received this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
YAAAS!! I love this series *so much* and with a rebooted Magician (well played) the game has most certainly changed. This is probably my fave entry into the series for a while - proper Wilde capers. I think making the issues reflect what's happening in the world today (racism, ethnic cleansing, potential genocides) shows how it doesn't matter what 'difference' you exhibit but if you are 'different' then it really really sucks.
I like how the Council itself is evolving and anything that makes Eshe seem like less of a bitch and more like the Oracle she used to be (is) and more of the Devil in charge is absolutely brilliant. I love all the Connected families that have come out of the woodwork and frankly I love where this is going and can't wait for the next one.
This series is so good. And anything that gives me Nikki and Nigel is always going to be a win.

The Shadow Court has reared its ugly head, and Sara as Justice is getting cryptic messages in the library tubes. This evil is using natural disasters to further their nazi views. As Aramaus is finding his way back to Sara, bitter betrayal comes with Sara's 10 year class reunion in Vegas. Read in order. Great series.
Another excellent book in the Justice Series! As the Magician and Sara relearn and grow in their relationship they are battling the Shadow Court together with the help from other members of the Arcane Council. The story line involves a so called benefactor who is actually removing the physic gifts from people because they want to control who has the power and skills. The action is always up to speed and the plot twist will keep you busy. Simon has his gismos which help save some and identify the bad guys. There is even help from an unexpected source! There are more people out there who are missing information like Armaeus. I would give this book more than five stars but I really look forward to the next in the series!
Jenn Stark have once again managed to write a enjoyable and exciting book. I don't always have the need to read the next book in the series, but when I do pick it up I'm always happy I did so.
If you've followed the story of Sara Wilde this far you'll know that her life is in stark transition. She's still breaking into her job as Justice of the Arcana Council - something that may take the better part of a century to absorb. Her relationship to the Council's Magician is in a transient state as Armaeus explores how things may have been before he deliberately carved those memories from his being. The Council, too, is in disarray as it seeks the leadership needed to identify and fight the Shadow Court. Because of that the Council's entire mantra of balance is on the chopping block.
Over everything looms the Shadow Court itself. While they are largely unknown to the Council, the reverse is anything but true. They seem to have planned every step in the Council's destruction. More, they have studied Miss Wilde and her career from her earliest days.
The story opens to reports that a heroic doctor has been extremely busy visiting regions devastated by disasters and upheavals. But along with food and vaccinations, those visits tend to be followed by loss of Connected abilities among the victims. Sara, as Justice, needs to investigate these urgent calamities - but Nikki drags her off to her ten-year class reunion instead.
Naturally, everything explodes. Sara's personal whirlwind carries her to Las Vegas; to the middle of Black Rock Desert for Burning Man; to New Orleans' ancient families and its finest beignets. But even a Bali typhoon can't compare to the worst storm of all: those high school memories.
The question of whether the Council can survive the onslaught of the Shadow Court is one thing. But it pales to whether the world can withstand the personal chaos delivered at the hands of Sara Wilde.
As with all books in the series, this Jenn Stark opus is well-written and remarkably clear of the kinds of typos and errors that creep into even the most careful editing. It moves along, sometimes shifting the viewer violently from locale to locale - because, after all, that's the mode of travel Justice uses. But readers should note that this volume is filled with arcana, and extensively visits the history created in more than a dozen prior novels. That said, go back and read them. It's a road well worth traveling.
Since the reveal of the Shadow Court’s long-running things behind the scenes from the Arcana Council, Sara Wilde, as Justice, along with the other councilmembers are trying to discern what the motives of the Shadow Court are and how much the Council will step in to help those caught in the crossfire.
The plus side, Sara and Armaeus, since recovering his memories, have been working on the threat side-by-side. On the other side, Sara also must contend with her high school reunion, and sometimes facing your past is more intense than facing a diabolical rival supernatural syndicate.
The Wayward Star was a great continuation from The Shadow Court. I loved the pacing and how it wasn’t super full of conflict instead focusing on unfolding more about what makes the Shadow Court tick, who is involved and why, and what their ultimate plans are.
There’s a turning point for the Council that is refreshing from how we’ve seen the Council operate up to this point. I really enjoyed the change up and I look forward to seeing where the new dynamic takes the upcoming stories in the series.
Sara and Armaeus continue to rediscover each other since the loss and subsequent retrieval of his memories, and I really loved the ease at which they interact. Even though there’s still a tentativeness in their interactions, it’s not really a reset on where they once were, but there is a lightness to their relationship. I think it’s the idea of Armaeus being more open instead of closed off and mysterious. He may still be mysterious about his motivations, but he’s also more open to sharing the reasoning behind his actions.
I felt like the high school reunion scenario was kind of just thrown into the story, but I also love delving back into Sara’s past and I feel like high school is always a fun one to revisit. Jenn Stark has done an awesome job of taking what we thought we already knew and continually adds another twist to the story without making it seem contrived. Instead making Sara’s past as though Sara herself sees things from new eyes which, technically, she does as Justice.
The Wayward Star was a nice transitional book in the series. I loved opening new avenues to explore in future books and the whole idea of the Shadow Court, and their history, is still so intriguing. This has been a great way to end one year and start a new one!
The Wayward Star is the fifth book in the Wilde Justice series by Jenn Stark and you definitely have to have read the previous books to know where you and other characters stand at this point. Sara Wilde is again in the thick of things, trying to keep the peace between the Arcana council whilst preparing for war with the Shadow Court. She also has to deal with an invitation to her high school reunion as well as the Burning Man festival… to try and balance all that she also has to deal with her emotions when it comes to the Magician and moving on with that relationship despite him forgetting who she is and what they had/have together.
This is a fast-paced book with a lot going on and the usual characters making an appearance: Brodie, Nikki, The Devil to name but a few. As usual with Sara, everything seems to be in the air and she is juggling a lot of responsibilities, dealing with betrayals and learning truths about her past which hit her like a semi! There are always some funny moments (Nikki is just hilarious) and a tie in to another series, as well as maybe some redemption from one of the Arcana Council…. we’ll have to wait and see how that develops.
As always with Jenn Stark books there is lots of description, action and will they/won’t they between Sara and the Magician. Although I have to say that the scenes with them in are beautifully written, passionate and heart-breaking at the same time.
Jenn Stark books are definitely books’ that you want to read, entertaining, knowledgeable and fast paced. You need to give them a try!
As appointed Justice to the Arcana Council, Sara Wilde has enough on her plate, first and foremost fight the claim to power of The Shadow Court, a rival organization, which seeks to restrict the use of magic to the wealthy. This time the Council seem to be in for the ride, not only Armaeus, Kreios and Simon join Sara actively in the field, but also Viktor and Eshe will help in the background. If it weren’t for Eshe behaving very “un-Empress”-like and Viktor deceptive nature…the ongoing strange behaviour of Armaeus….. and then there is Nikki, the best friend a heroine can have, always supportive, never afraid to call her out.
And of course, Sara will not be our Sara if nothing crazy happened down the journey… this time the crazy comes in the shape of…… High School Reunion. Events overlap, Sara goes to Burning Man (a most satisfying trip), Warwick of the Syx has a cameo role, and we cannot ask for more, what of course does not stop for wanting more… more adventures more book, more Sara, more everything, it is good to know Jenn Stark keeps on delivering.
Jenn Stark's writing style is unique, a mixture of hardcore adventure and whimsicality, that makes the book simultaneously light and surprisingly deep, with characters that show very real-life qualities in seemingly fantasy situations.
“The Wayward Star” is the fifth installment in the “Wilde Justice” Series, a directly follow up of the Immortal Vegas Series featuring Sara Wild as a magical-artifacts hunter. I keep repeating myself, and rightly so: Jenn Stark keeps on delivering the best urban fantasy out there… This verse deserves its own TV-Show, seriously!!!!!
Sara Wilde, Justice of the Arcana Council, is back, championing the forgotten, misused and abused of the psychic community, and fighting for, well, justice.
The fifth instalment of the Wilde Justice series sees a continuation of Sara and the Arcana Council's fight against their rival, the Shadow Court. The action takes us from an elegant soiree at a mansion in Switzerland, to the psychedelic Burning Man festival, and from a conference in New Orleans to Sara's high school reunion. However, along the way, we discover that appearances can be deceiving: not all of the good guys are good, and it may be possible that some of the bad guys aren't that bad after all.
The twists in this story are a delight and the action moves at a brisk pace. As usual, Sara is surrounded by her coterie of sidekicks, including the hilarious Nikki Dawes and much-put-upon Detective Brody Rooks. Armaeus is there too, of course, and I was thrilled at the way his and Sara's arc developed over the course of the novel (I won't say any more, because... spoilers).
All-in-all, yet another fantastic read from Jenn Stark. I read 90% of the book in one day and only put it down in the early hours of the morning because I literally couldn't keep my eyes open anymore. I can't wait for the next Sara Wilde story!
Please note: I received an advance review copy of " The Wayward Star" from the author. This review is my own independent and honest evaluation of the novel.
The Wayward Star is another action-packed, entertaining story from Jenn Stark in the Wilde Justice series.
Sara continues her journey as Justice for the magical world, this time also bringing in her high school 10-year reunion for an added twist and some angst. The Arcana Council is off balance and in confusion, but Sara and her inner circle still have to stop the Shadow Court from their choice of destruction. Amid everything, Sara's understanding of her role as Justice and her strong desire to protect the innocent grows. Sara's inner circle of Nikki, Brodie, Armeus, The Devil and others is by her side amid the wild journey. Her story with the The Magician also develops... I won't spoil it though.
While the story is written in a fictional world, it is easy to draw parallels with things happening in our own world, which is always interesting. Jenn's writing draws readers in to the story, making it all seem so real that I would definitely be looking out for the Arcana Council's homes above the casinos if I was to ever visit Vegas.
The Wilde Justice series should really be read in order as there is so much detail that you really need the context to fully enjoy the story. The Wayward Star is the 5th in this series, if you've not read the others, I highly recommend them, as well as Jenn's other books.
I voluntarily received an advanced copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
In The Wayward Star we go forward into the next step of the journey for Sara Wilde (Justice). Not only is she being led to her 10 year High School Reunion, she learns that betrayal began much sooner and in places she never expected. I enjoyed this installment and definitely recommend this to all readers that have read the prior books. If you haven't, I would not begin with this one as some of the backstory from the earlier Sara Wilde books will help provide context for scenes that take place in this book. The Shadow Court is back and causing the Arcane Council, and especially Sara, more trouble. While there are more clues for how to locate the enemy, it looks like it is time for the council to take a more active role in Connected/non-Connected lives greater that the seeking of balance. Changes are made in this book, and seems we can expect more changes coming soon. I throughouly enjoy reading this series and look forward to many more books to lose myself into the world created by Jenn Stark. I was provided an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Another exciting mystery for Sara Wilde and the hard core, inner circle squad of Arcana Council badasses! Starting with a warm dose of nostalgia from Sarah's earlier artifact hunting days, we dive into the ever expanding world and rich history among the connected communities of the world who've remained reclusive for protection. This novel focuses a little more on unravelling the secrets of the Shadow Court and their ruthless plans to cleanse the world of connected deplorables who don't meet their standards. I absolutely love watching Sarahs relationship with the magician unfold in new ways we never thought possible as the Magician continues to evolve into a person of spirit and emotion rather than the calculating logician of the past.
Don't miss out on this marvelous compound of magic, mystery, romance, action and the ever relieving quirky humor of Sarah's that distinguishes her from darker books and keeps the stories fun to read. I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher. This doesn't affect the content of my review.
I sat thinking about this book after I finished it for some time, trying to discover just why these stories are just so very good. I think it's because Jenn Stark respects her readers. She doesn't lead us by the nose through the stories. She allows us the space to try and guess what is happening, builds the mystery and the tension. This story is no different. Unlike the other's though, this one does make me want to sit in her kitchen and bring her coffee until she gives me the next part of the story.. A deep breath before we are off again. This romance with the Magician is just epic. It's deep and confusing and the tension is delicious! He's as much a mystery as the rest of the story!
And someday, I would love to read a story about Nikki and the Devil... Just sayin...
I did receive an ARC of this story for review. Jenn's the only author I do this for...so worth it!
Sara Wilde has another wild ride. As always the book is action packed. It always starts from the first scene (which I love) The book was better than the previous two because it takes place in her home town. It tells more of her back story and hints that there is more of that story arc to come. The past revisits Sara in multiple ways and was a strong theme in the book. As always the usual supporting characters are in the mix and it felt like coming home to hang with friends. It was the perfect distraction. Nikki was her hilarious self. She really is my favourite. The book is about the same length as the other ones so you will get your money's worth. In addition to that point, the ending was the perfect wind down. Long enough to say goodbye, but not so long it over stayed it's welcome.
This series still has a lot of life left in it. Which can be tricky so late in the game. However Jenn Stark manages to keep the story fresh and interesting. I am really looking forward to the next one
A shining example of Jenn keeping the characters fresh and expanding the universe of the connected. Not your typical High School reunion. Sara may not have been a star in high school but now everyone wants her for good or bad. Justice is demanded and justice will be there for all.
The Shadow Court shows more of their hand and Sara must evolve more to deal with the needs of connected and non-connected alike. How to deal with shadows without faces? How to help humanity grow and stop those whose visions are for only the elite. Sara has a burning need to get to the truth that drives her growth. Just when you think you have a good grasp of what Sara and council the story leads in unexpectedly refreshing directions that keep me coming back for more. Shine on!
I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher. This doesn't affect the content of my review.
I recieved this ARC in exchange for my honest review. I love the direction the Wilde Justice series has taken. While I loved Immortal Vegas, I feel that the character development and plot twists are better in this one. I was taken on an emotional roller coaster, laughing, crying, and everything in between. I love the small sub plots that are completed in each book. The cameos by characters from the previous series always tickle me, too. I quite enjoyed Tesla's dialogue, The Syx's part, and Eshe's greater role in this story. The direction Dal and the Magician are taking is brilliant. Over the course of both series, I feel as though I know the characters, they've become my friends and nemeses, and I'm fully invested. I can't wait for the next book in the series!
This book was a real pleasing read and I found myself not able to stop once I started.
I love Sara. I loved seeing her have to deal with her past in an unexpected way. She is opening up more to others and growing into her new role.
Her relationship with the Magician since his memory loss continues to evolve and I have to admit to growing to really like this version. He seems to appreciate her more and live in the moment.
This Shadow Court is an interesting entity and is testing all of the Council and forcing them to make changes. I am looking forward to seeing the next part of the battle.
This book gives us a little of the past present and future. Sarah Wilder works with Nigel to steal an artifact which does not go according to their plan. A ten year reunion is in the works and even though Miss Wilder does not want to attend, she finds she must as the Shadow Court is making it impossible to ignore. The Shadow Court is upping their game which threatens the connected gifts, unless Justice Wilde answers the call for help. Surprises from the past makes Sarah question who her friends are. The Magician is in a new role in the Council and his relationship with Sarah is heating back up. Lots of changes and exciting new turns will bring us new adventures for Justice Wilde.
I have been a fan of this series for some time and really enjoyed this book.
A story that builds from the very first pages and gets more absorbing with each chapter. More is discovered about the elusive Shadow Court and yet more questions are posed, some to be answered as the story progresses, perhaps. Nikki is one of my favourite characters and features a lot in this story, her vivacious character always welcome. I like the new and improved Magician and am invested in finding out more about him, and the balance between the growing relationship between him and Sara and the main story is just right. If you've just stumbled across this series then you are in for a treat!
If I find myself enjoying a series, I am always hesitant to read subsequent instalments as I worry that the book won’t live up to its predecessors. This has never been the case with the Justice Wilde series and it remains so with her most recent telling of Wilde’s adventures. Jenn Stark does a beautiful job of weaving the tapestries of the books together and the rich detail she provides in her storytelling gives me the sense of being in the story with the characters. This book feeds the souls of romantics, adventurers and fantasy seekers, and I can’t help but appreciate the sense of humour with which Jenn writes. It is apparent that she loves this world just as much as her readers do.
Jenn Stark's Arcana books is one of the best series out there, and this episode in the series is no exception.
We get to know a couple of the lesser known members of the Arcana Council, as well as the favourites, in their ongoing battle against the Shadow Court.
I read this in a couple of days, because I couldn't put it down. Which to be fair can be said of all the books in this series and the previous one!
As always there are good plot twists and turns, and Ican't wait for the next one in the series!
I would recommend reading the series from the start rather than jumping in here. But if you do you won't regret it!
This book is a continuation of the Sarah Wilde saga. And saga it is in the old fashioned sense! An epic ongoing story of trial, tribulation and, perhaps, triumph! A convoluted but intriguingly personal storyline, numerous new players and heroes as well as a wonderful plot! If you haven't read any of Jenn Starks truly engaging, intriguing and entertaining Sarah Wilde storyline before, you are in for a real treat! Highly recommended! I read this book (twice!) as a reviewer and can honestly say this has not affected my opinion. I love this series.
Jenn has never failed to deliver an awesome read and this one is no exception. Sara's adventures draw the fans in and keep them reading until the very last page. I'm excited to see where things between The Magician and The Justice of the Arcana Council go next. The latest twist in their story has made put them on more level ground and is bringing some serious heat.
I read The Wayward Star in one sitting and now I can't wait to read the next chapter in their epic sagas.
Jenns stories are amazing, and this one is no exception. We revisit a couple of the lesser known and more shady members of the Arcana Council, as well as firm old favourites, in their ongoing and increasing battle against the Shadow Court. I read this over the festive season, so unfortunately, I didn't devour massive chunks of the book at a time. I will reread it shortly!! I enjoyed seeing the Arcana Council starting to pull together as one, and seeing more quirks and interaction of its members. Good plot twists and turns as always, and already can't wait for the next one!
It took me a little bit to get captivated by this one at the beginning. I always love Sara and Nigels adventures though. Towards the middle is where it began really drawing me in . Her classmates were enjoyable and I feel like Sara has made new lifelong friends in certain ones. Seeing her and Armaeus slowly coming back together is absolutely heart warming. They are the true Power couple. I will say I am so ready to see what will happen with the Shadow Court and why they are so interested in Sara. She is a true Star. Cant wait for more! #FarradayForever
Great continuation of the story as Sara becomes more comfortable in her role as Justice. The author has also chosen to re-introduce the Magician who seems to have a more human element as opposed to the God-like complex from the beginning.........can't wait to read more about Sara and Armaeus' next adventure as they explore their newfound relationship. I liked that some of the characters from the earlier books were brought back into the story and I hope to see more in the coming books. Well done, Ms. Stark!
Let there be n doubt every single star on this rating has been earned by this author. As the stories and escapades of Justice Sarah Wilde continues we get to know more about her and her high school years right before everything literally went up in smoke. Things that leave her and the council spinning to control the outcome, the exposure and the harm to innocents. Of course that's not the only thing that sends them in reaction mode. With natural disasters and connected under attack the last thing she needs to deal with is Burning Man and her High School reunion and that includes blast from the past. Don't trust anyone has never been truer as the Shadow Council shows their hand and she finds out just how betrayed she was and how much of her past was orchestrated. Oh and I'm just going to say this new man Mr. Magician has become definitely is keeping her off kilter and well us too.
Loving this series!! I was so excited when I saw it appear I pushed everything else to the side. It's refreshing to know there are authors out there that you can always depend on to consistently provide reads that will keep you pumped up all the way from the beginning to the end. I love that these characters are always evolving not giving you the opportunity to get bored or for the tale to become redundant. Absolutely a fan.
