Thirteen Covens Academy: Coven Born

Rate this book
Not being a witch isn't an option when you're Coven Born. I wasn’t raised a witch. I didn’t even know I was coven-born until my parents died, allegedly from a curse. After being uprooted from San Francisco and moved across the country to Upstate New York to live with my uncle, I was thrust into a world of witches and magick. Yeah - real witches and real magick. IKR? Now, my eccentric uncle believes I have some kind of rare magick and the only way to find out is by sending me to the prestigious Thirteen Covens Academy where I will be trained to‘ meet my potential’, whatever that means. Just what I needed – a school full of rich, snooty kids. I have bigger things to worry about than my alleged rare witch powers. First–there’s Carrie Ambrose–the resident mean girl who calls me ‘charity case’ and keeps trying to get a lock of my hair. Second–the fact that Blaine Adams, the hottest, most popular guy at school asked me out, much to the fury of every popular girl in a one-hundred-mile radius. Third–the rumors that my entire family is cursed and the only reason I’m alive is because the coven is doing spells to protect me. My only ally (and that’s being generous) is the queen of the outcasts, Lisa Spears, who’s “serving time“ at the academy after doing something the coven high council didn’t like. Despite the mark she wears, or the insults from the other students - she has an entourage of hot guys who follow her everywhere, including the awkward, nerdy guy Eric–who’s always flirting with me. And the awkward, goth guy, Gary–who’s always flirting with me. And the awkward metal-head, Josh–who’s always flirting with me. I’ll be eighteen in a few weeks–old enough to decide if I want to stick with the Academy until I graduate, or leave my previously estranged family and its legacy behind. This isn’t going to be an easy choice. ***This is a slow burn Dark UF.*** Want MORE Thirteen Covens Academy? A tightly spinning vortex of fervent events and unexpected circumstances, thrusts those churning emotions into play front and center. Learned I come from a long line is witches check have allot to learn check. Mean girl with her own click check hot super conceited jock that didn't believe her when she tells him that she's not interested. Super cute nerd Eric he's a keeper, Gary very intence talks to the dead could be a keeper then there's super hot Josh he's in a band yep definitely into this one or all of them and then there's Lisa were friends she has her own issues. There a curse and of before I forget that mean girl she got a hold of my hair let's hope I learned enough magic to stop her cursing me. Also the Watch there always watching and can't be trusted and the coven I'm supposed to join may be out to get me or they really just don't like me.

Book review of Thirteen Covens Academy: Coven Born by Audrey Brice

“Not being a witch isn’t an option when you’re Coven Born.”

The main character Jessica has moved to live with her Uncle and Aunt after the death of her of parents. Jessica isn't sure of what to expect and she misses her parents. Then she find out that her parents kept a HUGE secret from her, she has magic potentially worse yet; her uncle believes she has a rare type magick. Then tells her the only way to find out is for her to attend the prestigious Thirteen Covens Academy where she can be trained to “meet her potential”.

It is well written with dynamic characters and interesting world-building. I came to find out, after finishing this book, that this book is a spinoff series of Fourteen Tales of Thirteen Covens, of which I have read none; I’m not sure if not knowing that was a help or hindrance in reading this.

This book was give to me to read for a review. I thoroughly enjoyed it and purchased it for my library as well. The descriptive writing carried me into the scenes filling my mind with senses activated and feeling the characters emotions. Jessica has her life turned upside down and inside out with the death of her parents. She is moved to live with family she did not know she had and immersed into magick she did not know existed. Through this she also goes through the struggles of being a teenager as well as the joys this time in life offers. She encounters classmates that wish her harm. She also finds new friends and love. I enjoyed being alongside her as she discovers hidden talents and magical items, learning how to use them. I am looking forward to the next book coming out and have already preordered it.

I have to be honest and say that I was a little worried that this book was going to be like so many others. A cute little story that really only has a surface story and no real plot line. This book was amazing. The author really took the line to conceive a fully thought out world, that if it were real, I would like to inhabit.

After the death of her parents, Jessie, has to move from San Francisco to Bailyville, New York. She moves in with her aunt and uncle and discovers that she is a witch. Through the first months for this she makes friends, learns more about herself and her family, and realizes that life will never be the same.

This is literally Sabrina the Teenage Witch meets Clueless meets Mean Girls all wrapped up in one neat book that you can't put down!!

The characters are amazing, the dialogue is outstanding, and the world Ms. Brice ropes you into is such, that you find yourself desperately wishing you had friends such as these, even if it meant coming with with the same enemies. After all, every High School experience has to have some sort of rivalry, right?

If you want to escape to a wonderful alternate universe, then grab a seat, a cold soda (or hot chocolate), a blanket, and curl up with Thirteen Covens Academy: Coven Born. You will be spell bound the entire time you're lost in the story.

Since I missed book 1 in the series it took a little while for me to link everything and connect all the dots but once I got the layout the book turned out to be amazing.

13 covens competing, jostling and ridiculing each other and a dream of bringing them together under one order so that they all get along is the main base of the series though we don't see much of it in this book.

This book majorly focuses on *The Academy* a magical school where all 13 covens send their children to study and the lives of some of the students specially Jess and her band of friends.

I believe that this series has a lot of scope and potential to grow into an amazing saga.

DNF - quit at 10%
This started out kinda weird, there’s really no background, as a reader, I’m dumped into this I known world of witchcraft, with no background & am shocked the the 17 year old FMC (Jessica) just accepts what they (total strangers claiming to be relatives) are telling her, no questions, no shock, no denial, no thoughts to why her parents never told her, or that they left that world. It just weirded me out that she was such a sheep. That in itself pulled me out of the story & I just couldn’t get back into it.

At my age (approaching 60), life is way to short & my time is to important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.

I have not read any of the other books in this series but I have to say that this one is awful, the sex scenes feel like they are trying to hard, the acceptance of this "open relationship" was unbelievable all the men just accept that this is what is going to happen, however these are TEENAGERS hormones would play into this somewhat surely (don't get me wrong I know this is fiction but really? Her first time was that easy.....)
Read this if you have read previous series in the set and you want to finish the story arc but don't expect to get hot and bothered

Jess has learned that there are many rules to follow when you’re in a coven. Unfortunately, Jess doesn’t always play by the rules, which has some very bad consequences for her first year at The Academy. Now, in addition to pursuing her magical skills, making friends (inside her own coven, of course), and managing three relationships, she has to find nine curses at her uncle’s house with the help of Josh and Renn.

There is much action and goings on in this one! Grab your copy and see what Jess is up to!

A great read

This start to the series is great for drawing you into the world of Jessie and her beaus.
I actually hope there is at least one more guy added to her harem as she doesn't really have a broody dominant in the group and who doesn't love one of those Lol.
I can't wait for book 2.

I really liked this story. It was entertaining and enjoyable. I think the fact that most of us follow the rules because we know we have to do so but I loved that she felt confident enough not to. The story was vastly entertaining and kept my interest throughout.
