The Amazon Charts bestselling series continues as air marshal Seth Walker hunts a potential terrorist who could hold the key to the darkest chapter of his own past. When an electrical engineer from one of America’s premier tech companies disappears inside the San Francisco International Airport before an overseas flight, air marshal Seth Walker is called in to investigate. With the clock ticking down and questions multiplying at every turn, Walker can’t afford to the lives of all two hundred thousand passengers inside SFO may hang in the balance. As he races through crowded concourses, desperately searching for clues, Walker can sense this is no routine missing-persons case. But as he digs ever deeper into the young man’s background, the tangle of contradictions he finds is confounding. Is the engineer the victim of a crime…or the perpetrator of one? As the case forces Walker to confront his own demons and the reason he fled his former life in industry, finding this man may mean exposing his own darkest secret.
Joseph Reid is the debut author of TAKEOFF, the first adventure of air marshal-turned-investigator Seth Walker. The son of a navy helicopter pilot, Reid chased great white sharks as a marine biologist before becoming a patent lawyer who litigates multi-million-dollar cases for high-tech companies. He has flown millions of miles on commercial aircraft and has spent countless hours in airports around the world. A graduate of Duke University and the University of Notre Dame, he lives in San Diego with his wife and children.
Departure is the third instalment in the thrilling Air Marshal Seth Walker series, however, there's no need to have read the preceding books in order to enjoy this one as the story is self-contained. That said, you will not be privy to the background of the characters if you just jump right in. Seth returns to LAX after a successful assignment and some family time where he is greeted only to be told he is needed urgently in San Francisco. An electrical engineer has vanished into thin air at San Fran airport. Seth and FBI colleague Melissa Cooke soon come to the realisation that there is much more going on that merely a missing person. What follows is a twisty, gripping and exciting tale with bullets flying and danger lurking around every corner. This is a well written, pacy and action-packed addition to the series and the high-stakes game of cat and mouse has you hooked from start to finish. Many thanks to Thomas & Mercer for an ARC.
Action-packed thrilled with a great plot and relatable characters.
I was a bit upset when I started this only to realize it was the third in a series that I hadn't yet started. Normally, I'd go and get those titles and read them first, but I was too far in at that point so I kept on going and am glad I did. I'm sure there is much backstory that I've missed, but this worked fine for me as a jumping off point and one day I may indeed read the first two books.
Seth Walker, a former Air Marshal and now in a new role as Tactical Law Enforcement Liaison and Principal Investigator, is called to what seems to be an emergency at San Fransisco International Airport. Apparently an electrical engineer has gone missing and didn't show up for his flight to Tel Aviv that morning. Seth is a bit surprised to find out that this level of response is indicated, until he hears the details. He's joined in the situation by someone he's worked with before, FBI Special Agent Melissa Cooke. The situation is contradictory and no one is quite sure what is going on, but Seth and Melissa start to track Anah El-Amin, an employee at Magnet (an electronics giant); it's unclear if he is a victim or a terrorist. No spoilers.
The details about so many different interesting aspects of electronics, flight, and airports kept me entertained along with the narrative that had me hooked from the beginning. I liked the two main characters, Seth and Melissa, and the descriptions of Seth's emotional baggage helped develop his appeal. I definitely would read the next in this series.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for this e-book ARC to read, review, and recommend.
I loved this edge of your seat fast paced thriller. There is nothing more exciting than an addicting game of cat and mouse as Air Marshall Seth Walker works with FBI colleague Melissa Cooke to find who is wreaking havoc at SFO.
I love the easy to read and follow writing style, and how the character of Seth Walker was written - full of heart, imperfect with a tough past. I enjoyed the plot twists, the surprises, and the pacing of the story. This really was a well written novel that read like I was watching a Harrison Ford blockbuster action thriller. I highly recommend!
An electronics engineer has gone missing, and Air Marshal Seth Walker is tasked with finding him, as it's assumed he's some sort of terrorist.
Most of the books he sprints around SFO from one end to the other looking for the guy. The last part of the book is different, and takes the series in a different direction.
’When an electrical engineer from one of America’s premier tech companies disappears inside the San Francisco International Airport before an overseas flight, air marshal Seth Walker is called in to investigate.’
DEPARTURE is my introduction to Joseph Reid's writing; though this is book three in the Seth Walker series, I look forward to reading books one and two, TAKE OFF and FALSE HORIZON, next.
The one issue I had with the book that I didn’t care for, and this could be a misinterpretation on my part (which is possible, I’m tired and running on leaded coffee), it seems like the missing person is labeled as a guilty party before being considered an innocent victim.
I want to get to know Seth Walker better by reading previous books and what I’m hoping will be a continuation of the series. Readers are given a glimpse into Walker’s life in the first two books, all revealed in book three, which brought me to tears at the end.
Thank you, NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer, for loaning me an eBook of DEPARTURE in exchange for an honest review.
For an action-packed thriller, it may seem weird to say that Departure by Joseph Reid is a beautiful story of forgiveness and redemption.
I hadn't read the other two books, but now I want to go back and read them as I enjoyed the characters in this book, especially the main character Seth Walker. While it may have helped to read the other two books, I don't feel I missed anything by not reading them as enough information was provided to keep me intrigued by the characters and invested in the story.
I liked the author's writing style, and the action popped off the pages from start to finish. I also enjoyed that most of the story took place in San Francisco, my backyard!
I would recommend this book because of its action, character development, and a good storyline.
Air Marshal Seth is landing at LAX, returning from an assignment, when he is intercepted to follow another case.
Industrial espionage is the primary focus of this book. He left the electronics industry due to the suicide of his boss. Would a foreign power really try to capture and steal the technology developed in this country? As you read you be the judge. A major support character is Melissa Cooke, Special Agent for the F.B.I.
The object of the diversion is a young Arab immigrant named Anah El Amin. Remarkably throughout the book, he stays one step ahead of Seth and Melissa at the airport in San Francisco.
I enjoyed the story and the plot but found the various treks through the terminals at SFO just a little slow at times. My thoughts developed a parallel plot. Why can’t they simply have a cadre of people looking at all the surveillance footage and see where El Amin is currently located rather than looking at past footage and then trying to keep up with his progress?
Amin escapes with his Chinese co-conspirator in a small jet. They head to another US destination and our two agents are able to commandeer a plane to follow them. They arrive at the new destination at about the same time.
The resourcefulness of both the two conspirators and the two agents are entertaining. There was a lot of action and the storyline is well-paced. The climax was a surprise. We received the digital download from NetGalley in exchange for a read and review and these are my honest opinions. Recommended. C.E. Williams
I received this book through NetGalley Read Now program.
The action in this story will keep your interest throughout. The flashbacks provide insight to Seth and how he got to the place he know works in. This story starts with Seth returning from a visit that he had with a family where he is godparent of the children and helps provide them with financial support. His journey home was not simple. He wound up preventing harassment to a flight attendant and wound up placing the passenger in flexicuffs. When is arrived at LAX he was immediately sent on another mission.
The mission that Seth was dispatched to was to locate an electrical engineer who had disappeared in the San Francisco airport. An agent from the FBI was also on site for this task. The high profile of individuals looking for the engineer was due to a high political figure's expected arrival.
Seth with the assistance of one of San Francisco's airport personnel, followed the video footage of the engineer to ultimately track him down. The method worked, however in the end to catch up, Seth was forced to fly to Dallas.
To find out why the individual disappeared, what transpired at the airport and why Seth had to go to Dallas, then you need to read this book. You won't be disappointed.
This is the third in the Seth Walker series. I have read the first two which helped me with background in this one. Seth is an Air Marshal who knows the air system. He is called to San Francisco to help save an important official. One of the people they are after a math and computer nerd which is what Seth was in his former life. Malissa Cooke FBI once again his partner.
I enjoyed the writing but if I had not read the first two books, I would not have known what was going on with Seth. I believe that you will need to read them in order to get the most enjoyment. We finally find out what happened to his mentor who killed himself. A slight cliff hanger from a certain bad guy and has been in each book Lots of action, lots of shooting and lots of improvised actions by Seth. 3 to 4 stars. Thank you, Net Galley, for the read. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Great action packed thriller! Seth Walker, an Air Marshal, gets pulled in to investigate a missing tech engineer. Amid the bullets and fires, Seth and FBI agent, Melissa Cooke, realize there is much more going on than a missing person. Tracking him and his assailant lead Seth and Cooke on a chase that will bring the ghosts of Walker's past back to the front and center of his mind. This book was written with flashbacks to five years ago to help understand the connection to the cat and mouse game that is being played out currently. The book was easy to read and follow, and kept me captivated from the first page. I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I read book #1 because it was endorsed by Alan Russell, I will admit to being a bit fazed by some aspects of the earlier part of that story but spurred on by AR's recommendation I continued reading and all made sense, unfortunately to go into an explanation would be a spoiler. Anyway having liked the book I pre-ordered book #2 and was equally pleased with that so did the same with this one as soon as it was listed.
It is a good story well told, plenty of action without straying into the antics of over the top "action movies" where the hero kills 503 bad guys with a single magazine. No doubt there will be another one next year, quality is worth waiting for.
This was a great story. I haven't read the first two books but that didn't stop me from enjoying this one. I do think that if I would have read the first two books that I would have gotten the connections via the character but other than that this one was great. This was gripping and twisty and great. I liked the characters enough that I totally am going to go back and read the first two books. Don't miss out on this one.
I read this in a couple of days because I didn't want to stop. It was non-stop action from the get go it seemed, and once I started I didn't want to stop. I loved getting more of Seth's back story as heart wrenching as it was to learn. The plot moved quickly although there are at times a lot of details that I may gloss over a bit. I loved the book though and can't wait to see what craziness happens in the next Seth Walker book.
Another terrific thriller from Joseph Reid! This is the third in the Seth Walker series and definitely the best. In addition to the fast-paced action set in present day, we also learn about some key events in Walker's life 5 years prior that answer some of the mysteries alluded to in this book and the previous two. A fun read while traveling - much of the action takes place in an airport - or by the pool or beach!
I really enjoyed this book. It had my attention from the first page and I didn't want to put it down. There are lots of little twists and turns that help keep the book from being predictable and the ending is not what is expected. This leaves the reader wanting so I'm sure another book will follow.
This was a thrill ride from the beginning. Seth is extremely intelligent and purposeful. He has a good heart, and great friends. He's great at his job, and well with his coworkers. It's his dark secret that he can't let go of, it chews at him and keeps him from being present. This was well told, and well ended.
I really enjoyed getting to know Seth Walker in the first two books, Takeoff and False Horizon--but Joe took it to a new level with this one, both in terms of answering some of the lingering questions about his protagonist's background, and in the craft and sheer "can't put it down" pacing. (Seriously, I lost sleep.) Absolutely a fun read! -KD, R.I.
Joseph Reed has created one of the most unusual characters I have ever encountered in any book and probably one of the most likable. Seth Walker is a complicated man with a lot of baggage but after reading his trilogy he feels to me like an old friend. Good work Joe!
Always enjoy the fast pace and action associated with Seth. Since I prefer dialog versus detail, all the description as he walked through the airport seemed like a waste to me.
This book was a wonderful read. Joseph Reid tells his story in such a way that it holds one’s attention. I hope he will be writing other books about Seth Walker.
Very easy reading great action novel, if you were a fan of the Die Hard movie series this is a novel that is very much like watching one of those movies, same action and pacing. Glad I read it
