In a supernatural world, Extras are faster, stronger, smarter than their human counterparts.
They’re also more magical, better-looking, and more privileged.
A pretty fair exchange, considering how fate chooses a mate for them.
Mating is simply part of an Extra’s genetic make-up.
You can’t fight it, and you can’t deny.
So, when Aello Volyana learns of a new dating app for Extras, it’s on.
She’s out to prove everything about Mate Date is a joke and should be renamed ‘Fast Ass’ because it’s nothing more than a front for a booty call.
As an Alkonost, a special type of Slavic harpy, Aello can sense lying.
She can also glamour others to do her bidding.
And that’s exactly what she’s going to do to the CEO of Twin Flames Apps, Drake Eberron, when she learns he’s telling their race to stop Calling.
A fake profile posing as a suckyoubus, some dating shenanigans, and a whole lot of laughs ensue as Aello fights to prove that mating is not going to the wayside.
And a dating app is not going to do squat, except break hearts.
This Valentine’s Day, if you’re looking for a funny love anecdote, try this reverse harem story. Bursting with unique paranormal creatures, a feisty lead character, and a whole new take on fated mates, MATE DATE is sure to make you laugh, cry, rage, and burn with passion.
This story is for readers 18+ and has sexual content and language not suitable for younger readers.
Bestselling author M.J. Marstens mixes romance, suspense, comedy, and sassy characters who can say whatever they are thinking because it is just a story. When she is not creating steamy scenes or laugh-out-loud fiascos, she is refereeing her four children that she homeschools. In her free time, she loves to eat, sleep, and pray that her children do not turn out like the characters she writes about in her books.
This book is so incredibly hilarious! The author somehow manages to be equally witty and crude and I laughed out loud too many times to count. She’s created a dynamic and interesting world, with the different types of “extras”, including species similar to harpies, leprechauns, and basilisks. Oh, and the book has the Baba Yaga in it, which is my favourite myth. I cannot express how good this book was! 5 stars
The humor in this book just wasn’t it. It felt like every other page there was a poop joke or something similar and don’t even get me started with the way they acted like men being sexually used was funny or acceptable?!
The humor ranged from immature to disturbed. For example there was a running “joke” where the main characters aunt would possess and use young men?!
“... compel this boy to forget what’s happened. Half the male populace has committed suicide because I can’t erase their memories of our glorious time together.” That’s an actual quote from this book after the (much older) aunt leads an 18 year old boy out on a leash after clearly telling us he’s possessed.
At another point the main character compels a man who wronged her to “Go tell every man you see tonight that you’re looking for them to plug their meat-stick into your shitter,” and thinks to herself that “At best, he’ll get the crap kicked out of him. At worst, he’ll end up with a meat-stick in his shitter. Serves him right.”
You know, because compelling someone to go be sodomized is... funny? Oh wait, it’s not. It actually makes me rather ill. It’s so disgusting that so many jokes in this book revolve around men being raped or rape in general like it’s supposed to be funny.
And if that’s not enough the characters have no development, the main character still thinks rules shouldn’t apply to her. I also know almost nothing about her harem by the end, which is a problem since this looks like it will be a stand alone, her harem members feel like strangers. They spend more time having sex than talking which would be fine if that had been clearly what I was getting into or if it had been more than the last like 2 chapters of suddenly all we do is have sex because who needs to get to know these people?? It felt messy.
Even without the rape jokes it would have been 3 stars.
This book could have been funny. It could have had promise. I’m severely disappointed in how this book went and will not be reading any more of this authors work.
This was... okay. There wasn't time to really get to know any of the characters or feel any way about them, so I don't even have a favorite. There were some funny moments, but more moments were I went wtf. Baba Yaga was a fun addition.
I’ve loved everything by this author and this is no exception during mate date I was trying desperately not to scare my hubby with my laughing FYI it didn’t work if your part of the Rh community you are seriously gonna get a laugh out of this such a brilliant book by one of my fave authors
Omg! I loved it. This author astounds me continually with her humor, wit, and imagination! Paranormal romcom at its finest. You have no clue what you're gonna get once you crack the pages of her books but you should know that you'll be highly entertained each and every time!
If you want funny with some steam then this book is for you. The FMC is on the hunt to prove that the new dating app is setting people up to be miserable and along the way through some mishaps and freakouts the story begins. I've never heard of 1/2 the supernatural characters but it doesn't really take away from the story. They are explained well. The only gripe I had was that after the mate call they never show how they resolve the initial conflict and why Lekan was so mad at her... Only thing that bugged me. Lots of laughs though. Multiple POVs and quick, light-hearted read.
I wanted so badly to like this book. But I couldn't even get past the first chapter. The line that really made me throw in the towel was, "Girl, please, don't even start with me. A fucking dating app for extras?! That's like a dating app for penguins or some shit. What's the point?" I was getting some hints of unrealistic-ness before this, but this line was so overly dramatic and out of place that I had to stop. Sad that I had to drop this one.
There wasn't any time to learn anything about the harem and I feel like our main character knows practically nothing about the harem. On top of that the dialog tended to feel awkward and unrealistic. Plus with the majority of the "jokes" being potty humor or straight up rape jokes or treating sexual assault against a male like it should be funny this book was just not for me. In fact I half wish it had come with a trigger warning.
Marstens did it again. This book has everything you could want in a reverse harem rom-com. It was hilarious but also had emotion and deeper connections. If you’re looking for a fun, quick and sexy read, I highly recommend this book!
What a delight this books was!!! I read it withing hours of being downloaded to my kindle. And I can't believe that the author managed to write an even funnier book than her most amazing Motherf*cker! I enjoyed this book so much I have no words to describe. First of all, the idea is hilarious, then all the characters are incredibly funny, but most of all Aello and Baba Yaga, and finally, the interactions and dialogues, and sometimes monologues, left me chocking in laughter from first to the last page. This book is not suitable for anyone with heart problems, cause it might cause a heart attack due to hysterical laughter. The main character, Aello, has no filters, she gets into trouble all the time, mostly for being very nosy. She is also very determined, protective of those she cares about, and she has a constant food craving. And did I mention that sometimes she gets uncontrollably horny which gets her into some weird, incredibly funny situations. Of course I loved her to pieces! This book is best read without any information, just let yourself be surprised because it's totally worth it, I promise. I've always loved this author and her sense of humour, but I had no idea she could get even better. Every time I read another book I think it doesn't get any better than this, and then she surprises me with something even better. I love her even more since this book and I can't wait until she surprises me again!
I Needed to read something funny and sexy with some r-h and let me tell you I found it!! The FML was epically sassy and badass and her aunt!! I Love her. The men were sexy and it was so funny to see what the FML did to them. I highly recommend this if you want to laugh your ass off. I will not spoil the funny scene because you need to read them to appreciate the funniness.
This is my first time reading something written by M.J. Marstens and I will read more. Her writing style is good and I bow down to her mastery of humor and getting me to laugh so loud that my family started to complain and told me to shut up, which I couldn't do.
MJ does it again! This book is laugh-out-loud funny, scorching hot, and a total page-turner!
Aello and her fellow characters are "Extras" or supernatural beings living out in the open of human society. She signs up for the new Extra dating app called "Mate Date" and you are taken on an adventure you certainly weren't expecting! I also really love that MJ incorporates lesser-known supernatural creatures, so I actually learned something while being entertained! This book is a must-read.
This book is absolutely hilarious! I haven't laughed so hard since reading MJ Marstens Motherf*cker. I don't know where the twisted sense of humor comes from, but I love it. This book is a tangled web of misunderstandings, lies, and humor all in the name of fated mates. There is panty melting shifters, an crazy aunt, and a FMC that is out of control- what more could you ask for? Oh and the vibrator races had me laughing so hard I almost peed myself.
Aello is fun, sassy, and a little bit reckless. I really like how Marstens writes the relationships between females. Aello is trying to out the problems with an Extra dating app. Chaos and shenanigans ensue. It is a fun adventure, but most problems and obstacles are solved rather quickly. This is kind of an insta-mate type story (after a male sends out a Call), so While I had fun with the story, I didn’t think there was much emotional connection between the FMC and the guys.
Loved the FMC!!! The dating site humor is spot on. She is funny, sassy and has a good heart. I love how she stands up for her friend and tries to protect her. And I cracked up with her aunts sex shop!!! Lol. This book you need to read if you want a good laugh with some fun mate romance mixed in.
Aello is a type of harpy. When a Date Mate, an app similar to Tinder but for Extras—magical creatures— makes Extras men stop their mating call, she sets out on a path to find the skeleton in Date Mate's CEO closet. It's a story full of fun situations, and sexy times with Aello and her three new-found mates.
Aello is a rare form of Extra. As an Alkonost she can enthrall people to do her bidding whether they want to or not. Not that it matters because she would know if they were lying. Her best friend Sylphia has found a new dating app for Extras. It's supposed to negate the need for "the calling", a phenomenon experienced by the male Extras. If their mate is within 100 miles of them when they send out their "call" then she will respond and a bond is forged.
Drake Eberron the CEO of Twin Flames App, the creator of the Mate Date app, claims that the need to make "the call" is a thing of the past. That all Extras should be able to pick who they mate with. Following in the footsteps of their ancestors is archaic. Aello disagrees. A lot.
During a disastrous double date with Sylphia and two Extras from the Mate Date app, Aello lets her feelings about the app cloud her judgment and she does something rash.
Iliano, the owner of Extraordinary, the Extra nightclub, sees Aello illegally enthralling two Extras and decides to confront her before she can escape. If only he had remembered what she was capable of.
Along the way, we are introduced to Drake and Lekan, each of which brings something different to the story.
I'd love to continue talking about it but if I did, you wouldn't need to read the book and then you will miss out. I laughed out loud so many times that I was told multiple times by my niece to please quiet down, she couldn't hear what she was watching.
So, let's make it short: It was hilarious, with a lot of stupid behavior and ok, some questionably situations. But, we didn't see flying cocks... so, I think we are good.
No, serious. In a longer version. I really enjoyed it. I don't want to use human moral. Baba Yaga's possessing humans, for example. But it's a paranormal story. It doesn't have to make sense. There were excellent jokes, too. And I don't mean the immature ones.
I was mostly annoyed when Aello did stupid things, though. But still I liked her. She wasn't all bad, and some things she did were comprehensible. So, I mostly knew where she comes from. That makes her redeemable.
The men. I liked them, too. But they weren't that distinctive. Other than their Extra. There were not a lot of background information. And due to the fact that we mostly have Aellos POV, we don't know much about their thoughts and feelings either. And I wished there would have been an epilogue or some sort of extra story. Like them meeting the families or their life with future children.
And I still don't know what Aello does for a living. It would have been interesting, too, how Extras grow up with humans around them. I mean, they have to learn about their abilities too?
Maybe there will be a story in the same universe in the future with more details. Who knows?
I'm rating based on all around experience. The character quirks, their interactions and the originality of the story idea. It all came together awesomely.
This book was a little out there but completely hilarious. For the avidly involved readers, there is a cameo about a quarter way in that had me sharing the book before I was halfway through.
No real exposition about the world but it worked for this story. Character interaction and internal dialogue allowed you to understand their world pretty well while the book kept moving.
It doesn't have any hard hitting emotional drive involved. Which is not a bad thing. This book is an absolutely fun and sexy distraction you need from reality.
Dear god, I made it maybe 10% into this book before I laughed myself into hiccups. Aello is freaking amazing as a main character and I loved every bit of her story, the relationship with the guys and her shenanigans but Baba Yaga is my spirit animal hahaha. While I absolutely love the more commonly known supernaturals, I was ecstatic to read different kinds this time around. Mj please keep writing, I love getting lost in your characters' lives.
I found the hole thing hilarious and I didn't want to put this down.a fast burn rh with plenty of action with twist and turns that a wasn't sure what to expect and kept me on my toes.the lovable character that add to the story and made you fall for all 3 hot extras that you wished it was you in the story and the smart and sassy Aello who's on a mission to stop mate date and finds more than she barged for.
This book was hilarious, sexy and fun. I loved the unique paranormal creatures in this book. The book was freaking hilarious with so many literal laugh out loud moments my hubby got pissed I was laughing while he was trying to sleep lol. If you're looking for something fun, lighthearted and quick this is the book for you.
That's what this book is a total Laugh out Loud fest.
If you have read the rom com series of M.J. Marstens you know she writes her funny extremely well, this book is no exception, the characters even the Alpha asswipes are funny as heck. The mc is hilarious and lets not start on auntie.
This book kept me laughing from the start. I am not great at reviews but this is a must read. If your looking for a pick me up after being left with a major cliff hanger that has destroyed your desires to move on this book is for you. I am definitely going to check out more by this author.
As someone who was off the dating market before dating apps were a thing, I do love hearing people talk about their experiences. A book about it is a win. A book by this author? Win-win! She never fails to make me laugh out loud. I really love books like these. Insert a quick fix of romance, steam and laugh out loud funny moments!
Holy catfish!! This is my second MJ Marstens book and she is bloody hilarious! I literally haven’t laughed as hard while reading, ever, as much as I have reading her books. This book is awesome! And I learned something, too! About vampires. And The Count from Sesame Street. Blew my mind! Aello, Lekan, Iliano, and Drake are an amazing foursome. The sex is hell-level hot! Love love this book!
