I enjoyed reading this series. Character development is strong. There is a dash of humor mixed through the tale of survival. I enjoyed Nathan's commitment to building a family with the children he collects and the friends he goes home to. There are plenty of weapons, ammunition and fight scenes for those who read apocalyptic fiction for the gratuitous violence. I am more interested in how the characters face the challenge. The series works well in this respect. I have two caveats. First is the typical proofing errors prevalent in self published works. I have learned to read over the errors. My second complaint is a general observation of current apocalyptic fiction. Not all readers are gun toting, political conservatives. The propensity for describing all "liberals" as foolish grasshoppers is frankly offensive and annoying. I am a liberal. I served in the military, believe in preparedness, have raised registered gun owners and took an oath to preserve the constitution. I also believe the government has a vital role in providing infrastructure for the collective well-being of citizens. Any system of government can be subverted or become tyrannical. The base premise of the one percent power brokers culling the human herd is plausible. However relying on stereotypes is bluntly lazy. Hope Mr. Watson reads this review and is good natured with constructive criticism. I am 70 and have read apocalyptic fiction since being a teenager.
What a disappointment! No story... Just repeating rambling on weird childish family dynamics.
I had really enjoyed book one and two in this series. Book three was a very big disappointment because the writer made the main character this man child with horrible character development. Book four makes book 3 look good. Book four has no story arc, it's so purpose is to explain the dynamic and a weird family with man-child and high school antics with cringe dialogue, with a plot that just keeps repeating itself. Example: the world is a bad place, I will protect my children in a bad place, in a bad place you must do bad things, the world is a bad place, we must be ready for bad things.... Now explain this over 20 times as each new supporting character cast is introduced the shock of this reality has to be relived over and over again. It was horrible writing with cringe dialogue that made me think the author really didn't know what he wanted to write, but felt he had to try to make character development into some poetic esoteric statements... That never happens. I did not enjoy this book. I find it hard to recommend it to anyone. The writer left this storyline open for another book in the series however, I can't recommend wasting your time with it.
Nathen Owens and his ragtag adopted family have finally made it to the compound in Idaho. While those already ensconced in the redoubt are thrilled to have him home they quickly realize that they need to double up on their survival skills. The news Nathan brings about their journey across the country is grim. Danger is no longer out there somewhere, it is in their own backyard.
Watson’s and Allen’s fourth novel in the Dark Titan series, War Zone: Homefront is one of the best post-apocalyptic books I’ve read to date. It is witty, humorous, and frightening all at the same time. The story grabs you by the collar and never lets go. The levity interspersed with the dark reality of evil that has been unleashed upon the US is in perfect balance.
It was refreshing to see all the characters from the previous books in the series having retained their unique personalities. The new characters brought a new dimension to the story. Though Nathan is the protagonist, Emma quickly steals the show. She has everyone wrapped around her little finger.
Too bad I can’t give this book more than 5 stars as it certainly deserves it.
I want at least a book 5. This has to be one of the best EOTWAWKI series of all time. Everything Thomas Watson describes in this book, "yes it is fiction" could happen. It is a very well thought out storyline. I read all 4 books back to back. I did not stop to review each book when I finished it, because I could not wait to start the next book. Thomas does not take the 1st chapter to remind us what happened there, and each book picks up exactly where the previous one stops. This series should make you think, IS THIS POSSIBLE? I want at least one more book, please. I give this series the highest rating I can as it is that good. I know I am not giving out hints as to the storyline I will tell you there are no zombies. Just plain GOOD VS EVIL Only the first and last books are on Kindle Unlimited. I will buy more from this author. Again I HIGHLY recommend this Series.
The 1st 3 books were stellar, mixes of intense action, real world shtf situations and relationships. The 4th book what is it? 90 percent was useless dialog about the kids mostly Emma, Nathan has turned more into a punk than a leader and there is no building of the plot. They have 2 or 3 "skrimishes" the rest is just painful to read through. I hope the author is reading these reviews and goes back to his old way of writing, because this was terrible. By the end I was almost rooting for the bad guys so we didn't have to hear any more tantrums or anything else about his previous tantrums. This book was built up in book 3 like they were going to start the war to push back to oppressors but nothing really happened.
Having been a fan of this series from the beginning, I was almost reluctant to start War Zone. I was worried that Mr. Watson would not be able to match the character driven stories in the first three books. I was worried for no reason. This story picks up where the last tale ended. It is just as engaging as the others in the Dark Titan series. Filled with new characters that quickly endear themselves to the reader, it still has plenty of action and keeps a fast pace. Mr. Watson has a knack for writing tales that take readers on a rollercoaster ride, leaving them gasping for breath and begging for more.
I struggled to finish this book. There are writing errors/grammar etc but nothing too terrible. The actual writing style is OK. However, the characters are awful. The barrage of inane conversation between all of the characters is constant. I assume it is meant to be endearing, but for me, ends up being beyond banal and sophomoric. They have very little ability to actually focus and their leader is unstable. The story line of using prisoners to train the killer dogs was way too long, cold and drawn out. These people may do well in the next book of the series, but I doubt I will continue.
Hey, are you a woman? I've read this whole series and it became clear that only a woman could write such mushy dog doodles. So unbelievably soft, I almost couldn't finish. There is not a man in this World who is like that. It stank. 😢. Don't get me wrong, the writing was great and the story line smooth. But clearly you are greedy because you didn't have enough material. So you spread it out until I swore, I was wading in a bog of waste high garbage. Again 😢.
Good read and story, totally excessive amount of cursing, children and all, detracted from what would have been a very good book, have no ideal why the author saw the need for all the cursing, end of America or not; book got kind of silly towards the end with character interaction bing totally silly. Author should have continue series, he had a really good story and setting going.
The story is unfinished, what happens next? Writing and character development deserves four stars plus. We see where the war is going and I enjoyed reading it, but the story really needs to continue. Seeing the disparate kids join into a bonded family was satisfying, watching them all develop as they witness atrocities is interesting but they're all so well adjusted.
Though much of the dialogue is somewhat juvenile, the storyline is well written and there is lots of action. I love Thomas Watson and have read most of his other offering. I look for new books from him two to three times a week. I don't know when he will if ever write a new installment to this story but I await it eagerly.
I loved the first 3 books in this series. Too much time with specific long detailed acts of violence...little kindness and compassion..just macho swearing stuff. Deeply disappointed in this one book.. the first three were great..a reminder about societies sad potential yet showing human potential for learning..for courage and for love
Great read runs well with apocalyptic fiction in the Thomas and Allen format of writing great story with memorable characters. Highly recommend this and all other books from the authors.
They did it again! What a fantastic book. I guess it’s good Tommy didn’t snake bite Jasmine. This is the funniest book I’ve read in a long time. Can’t wait for the next one.
As always Mr. Watson delivers It is great that this story, the first series I read by him, is back. I like the new direction he has taken with Nathan and his family. If you haven't read this yet you should and you will not be disappointed.
I read the first four books in a week....Couldn't put them down...This Author tells a story that has you by the seat of your pants from page one...... As always I can't wait for the next book...
This is an excellent and highly enjoyable book from my favorite author. I selfishly wish he would publish more books sooner, just so that I can read more about Nathan and Besseta and all his other characters. I can highly recommend this book to fans.
This is such a great series and I really love the Posse. The main characters of Nathan and his kids are fantastic. They keep me amused and laughing at their antics. I would love to learn more about Chip though.
Well written, entertaining well balanced book the writing is as expected from both authors (very good). The book is for adults, sometimes a strong stomach is needed.Read it and enjoy.
I am so impressed with this series. Well written storyline with amazing characters that make you feel part of the posse. You can't help but cheer them on.The comroderie the group has is outstanding. I really wish the next book was done.
The story is great. You fall in love with the people in the book, you will want to meet them in real life. They are funny and real at the same time. While telling a great story.
The author builds believable characters you want to get to know better. The storyline draws you in and sweeps you along with it. The only thing I wish this book had was better proofreading.
Another great book by Thomas A Watson. I loved these characters and haven’t laughed this hard in a while. I can’t wait for the next book in this series. I would recommend all of Thomas’ books. I listened to this book on Audible.
My two favorites. "Viral Misery" and "Walking in the Rain"!! So happy to buy this re-released series. Timeless action and slapstick comedy! Don't get no better!
Another fantastic instalment in the Dark Titan series, fast paced and action packed, with some memorable characters. I was hooked from the beginning and was finished far too quickly, this series is so addictive! Wonderful narration by Eric Shelman.
Scared this he'll out of me! Outstanding series. Scary how much has and could happen in our lifetime. Prepare for the worst and pray for the best. 5 Stars because I could not put the books down.😎
Loved reading this series and this book was every bit as good as the previous three. The characters had become so familiar and and I just kept hoping nothing was going to kill them off. Fabulous author and am now ready for the next series.
Facing the current war in Ukraine, the world is living in fear of just such a back step as Dark Titan. We all need to think outside the box and plan ahead.
