I would have given 3.5 so I rounded up for this review.
As a language teacher I enjoyed this very engaging reader about the life of a man, that was a regular visitor in the author's Spanish classes. It was the students themselves that encouraged and assisted the author to make this man's life experiences in the novel. It gives a very accessible and intriguing look at what life was like for those Cubans who did not agree with the Castro regime. It makes students really think about what they would do, if this were them.
It was much more interesting than some of the other non-fiction texts on the market and the story will resonate for years when students are asked what makes a government good or bad or what makes a leader a good leader rather than a dictator. The included text is written at the novice level and at the intermediate level, but the themes in the novel make it better suited for level 3 and above.
Engaging account of the efforts of Dionisio to flee from Cuba to the United States. Also touches on the stories of others in his family, ranging from those who support the Castro regime to others who also wish to flee Cuba.
A good glossary is included. Also, two levels are included, intermediate and high novice.
Archival photographs are excellent additions to this volume.
