There are things I like about this book and things I dislike. Firstly, I'm happy to see a prayer book extant that i myself haven't written. That alone made me buy it. Secondly, I absolutely love the prayers for soldiers, royal marines, etc. that are included. That was one of my favorite parts of the book, especially the prayer on the death of a warrior.

I laughed outloud at the section on wights (pronounced like 'wits' it refers to nature spirits. the old norse analog is vaet, plural vaettir), because not only are there prayers for wights of land and home but also for the wights of the tavern. LOL. That is just delightful. :) There were illustrations throughout that were also quite charming.

i also love that prayers to Mani and quite a few prayers to Loki were included and it was a nice surprise to find prayers to Brigantia and Seaxnot. It annoyed me mightily that the Goddess Sigyn was omitted from the devotional.

There is, however, one reason and one alone that this got three stars and not four (and it nearly got two. Only the prayer to the tavern wights changed my mind). Freya is NOT Queen of the Valkyries. I'm not sure where this fallacy began, but I see it endlessly repeated these days. The valkyries are extensions of Odin's will. They have *nothing* to do with Freya, which a simple matter of etymological analysis shows (I've written about that here: https://krasskova.wordpress.com/2016/...). I think the misunderstanding comes from Freya receiving half the slain, still, the sooner this particular inaccuracy can be put to rest the better. It really ruined the devotional quite a bit for me.

Still, for those wondering where to start with prayer. This is a useful text, not overly complicated, and easily incorporated into rituals.
