BREACH: Paranormal Defense

Rate this book
A team of marines is sent to retrieve a mysterious package from the Algerian coast, which is revealed to be the corpse of an extradimensional warrior outfitted with advanced cybernetics. This would soon prove to be the least of their problems as they find themselves drafted into an elite paramilitary unit, established to counter anomalous threats to our universe.

BREACH is a blood-soaked anthology of thirteen interconnected stories that were originally published through an online forum, drawing from the genres of cosmic horror, dark fantasy, and military science fiction.

This book contains scenes of extreme gore that may be unsuitable for some readers.

Preface: I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
Actual rating: 3.25 stars
Explicit content: Lots and lots of gore, mild cursing, death.
Recommended for: Any fan of SCP or extreme eldritch horror/gore short stories

As mentioned above, this series of stories is really reminiscent of SCP stories. (For anyone that doesn't know, SCP is a sci fi wiki cataloguing various reality-bending items and people, and often contains accounts of military personnel dealing with these things.) It's very impersonal, with a heavy focus on the action and horror rather than character interaction or growth. The stories seem a little disjointed at first, but the connections between the events become more apparent as time goes on. The horror imagery is very strong - lots of mind-bending stuff, and interesting monsters (though they're better when they're not speaking, imo). Overall, though, there isn't really a satisfying conclusion of any kind (if anything, it seems like a lead-in to another series by the author), nor is the main character particularly interesting. Despite being told from his POV, we don't really know anything about him besides he likes his squad and ends up in a pretty rough mental place by the end. He's really incidental to the events - if anything he's sometimes a detriment, as he loses his mind /composure a few times in a few missions. The actual hero of the story is Jefferies, another member of his squad. Jeff is the one who actually gets most of the big moments, especially at the end, and I think I would have preferred to hear things from his POV.

Overall, this story will appeal to someone who prefers a focus on action and shootbangs, rather than the characters or deep explanations. If you're that sort of person, you'll enjoy this. If you're hoping for something more character-driven or with a clearer resolution, give this a pass.

This book by Amelie C Langloiswas definitely dark, disturbing and full of very vividly described gore, to say the least. It was also a rather dim view of how important we Earthlings are compared to the galaxies out in space. These stories detailed one group's efforts to protect mankind from extinction from beings from other worlds who came to destroy the earth, while other "beings" helped try and protect it. This is a voluntary review of an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from Hidden Gems Books.
