Elise Darcy grew up in North London in the 1970's, the daughter of two baby boomer school teachers. Her love of books began at an early age when trips to Regent's Park always culminated in a visit to Foyles, the legendary independent bookstore in Charing Cross Road. She has fond memories of exploring a veritable Aladdin’s cave of books; a magical place with winding staircases, old creaking lifts, and cosy corners in which to settle down and lose herself in a good book.

After university Elise Darcy worked in London before embarking on her writing career. She now lives in an apartment in a picturesque market town in Suffolk where she writes her novels.

Couldn't put it down...

I loved this 4-book boxset chronicling the trials and tribulations of John and Sylvie, a 60-something couple, who retire early, then find themselves at loose ends with themselves and each other. Altho married for 40 years, with 3 adult children, the two have extreme difficulty communicating with each other. Each one is quick to take offense, jump to conclusions, and assume the worst of the other, resulting in serious misunderstandings. Their annoying inability to say what they really mean and feel is exacerbated when John decides to convert their single family London townhouse into two separate apartments, with a view to renting one out to generate extra income. Sylvie moves into the garden apt below, for a trial run before they rent it out, but quickly becomes entrenched, refusing to vacate. And there's the crux of the dilemma. Will they eventually divorce, or find a way of living apart together (LAT)? Each book could probably be read standalone, but you must read all 4 to get the whole story. I read them straight thru, over 2 days. Couldn't wait to find out what happened. If you like light, quirky, fun, situational comedy/romance novels, you'll love this boxset!

I was glad to finish this series, not just because I wanted to know the outcome, but because it was driving me crazy. The story started out okay but the way it was written became so repetitive. We didn’t need to be reminded who everyone is on every page. I got sick of the reference to Julia as ‘best friend Julia’ (there was no mention of any other friend), and the characters ‘making a mental note’ to do something, and all the references to New York were prefaced by being ‘whisked off’. It was like a TV series where they rehash most of the previous episode every night. Perhaps it was written for people with memory problems. It could have been quite good with lots of editing. The character John drove me to distraction with his stupid plans and ideas. I wasn’t sure if it was supposed to be funny or he really was a complete idiot, hiding behind trees, eavesdropping around corners, and not even recognising his own wife when she was wearing a hat and sunglasses. He reminded me of Benny Hill. Sylvie was tolerable, at least she had a mind of her own. I’m glad I only paid 99c for this series.

I really enjoyed this series of books. I’d give it 5star if not for the repeated parts. There is no need to retell something that was in another book or even the one I’m currently reading. I read more in a day of these four books than any other in a long time. It was captivating and I thought about so many possibilities to explore this option. . It seems like an interesting way of living and might be a better solution for many as they age and have different interests.

John and Sylvie brought so many thoughts of my own life. Being of the same age! At times I would get frustrated with them but then they would turn things around.
