Mother-of-three Emma Hornby was born and raised in Bolton, England.
History has always been her passion and she grew up with her nose buried in sagas. Before pursuing a career as a novelist, she had a variety of jobs, from care assistant for the elderly to working in a Blackpool rock factory. She later wrote short stories and non-fiction pieces for the internet, print and stage and also worked as a freelance poet.
Emma's books are gritty historicals set in Victorian and WWII Bolton and Manchester, which she began writing after researching her family history. The colourful folk she unearthed gave her plenty of inspiration; like the characters in her novels, many generations of her family eked out life amidst the squalor and poverty of Lancashire's slums. Her first book, A Shilling for a Wife, was the bestselling debut saga novel of 2017. Her subsequent titles regularly appear in the official bestsellers' charts.

Lorna Cannock returns to live with her father after her husband's accienntial death. Her brother-in-laws think that Lorna was responsible for Adams death. They vow to get revenge. So Lorna and her father Amos flee from Bolton to Manchester. Amos's brother Ambrose is a wealthy coal merchant. Ambrose offers Amos a coal round. But Amos isn't as fit as he used to be and Lorna Hinds herself giving her dad a helping hand.

This is a beautifully written book. The descriptions of Bolton and Manchester made me feel like I had visited there. My heart went out to Lorna. She was a widow at twenty three then had to flee the country. A story of love, loss, poverty and friendship. I really enjoyed this book.

I absolutely love historical fiction. Stepping back in time to another world, another era...another life even. A DAUGHTER'S PRICE promised to be everything I love in an historical fiction novel...but sadly, the vernacular made it difficult to follow. I have read many books that used their own vernacular for the region in which it was set, but I don't know what it was about this one that just made the dialogue confusing.

The story follows twenty three year old Laura Cannock, who has returned to her father's home in Bolton after the sudden death of her husband. But Adam's family believe that Laura had a hand in his death and have been seeking her out. After knocking on their landlady's door in search of her, Laura and her father flee Bolton for Manchester where her uncle Ambrose is a coal merchant. But no sooner than they have left when Laura turns for one last look at her home town to find their former home and their landlady's shop ablaze. The Cannock brothers are hot on their tail.

Upon arrival in Manchester, Laura and her father move in with Ambrose, her father's well-to-do brother whom Laura finds to be something of a snob. He calls them out for referring to the servants as anything but their surname, citing that it would breed familiarity, and yet his nights are spent with that same servant on his squeaky bedsprings. What a hypocrite, Laura thinks. Uncle Ambrose gives her father a job delivering coal and, after a disturbing incident in a seedy part of town, he also gives Laura a job in the office. But when her father begins to feel unwell, Laura jumps in to deliver the coal alongside him unbeknownst to her uncle whom, she's sure would frown upon it.

But then she soon begins to feel uncomfortable with her uncle after a few too many brushes of her breast, hands about her waist and the weight of his stare. I found him downright sleazy. And it isn't long before Laura finds herself having to flee again after one too many times trying to escape his advances. They seek refuge in a nearby house in a court where she finds kindness in the strangers who become her neighbours.

A DAUGHTER'S PRICE is a story of friendship, love, loss and extreme poverty, but in amidst it all is a heartwarming one of hope. There are a number of challenges that Laura and her father must overcome as they deal with revenge and forgiveness in the midst of poverty.

Although I found the old Lancashire dialogue difficult to follow, A DAUGHTER'S PRICE is a journey to another time that can be both frustrating as well as endearing, with moments of sorrow, happiness, frustration and fear. There are some predictable moments but you come to expect that from historical fiction as it doesn't spoil the story but rather enhances it. And a perfect way in which to escape.

Brilliant! Such a good read, Emma Hornby is a real talent.
This book is action packed, it's set in Bolton and Manchester, Lancashire, it's full of history and emotion. Laura is a strong woman and her tale is one of heartache and loss, revenge and true friendships. I found the old Lancashire dialect difficult at first but I soon got used to it, even embraced it. Would recommend.

I absolutely loved this book set in a very difficult time. After the death of her husband, Laure Cannock returns to live with her beloved father, but the two of them soon have to flee their home as Laura's late husband's brothers are out to find Laura, she suspects that is because they blame her for their brother's death.
Once they arrive in Manchester, Laura and her father move in with his well-to-do brother, and once again Laura finds herself having to flee for her safety.
A story about extreme poverty, loss, love and friendship. A wonderful heartwarming story and I will now be keeping a look out for more from this author.
Highly recommended

Laura Cannock twenty three year's old is back living with her father Amos Todd a Coal man by trade. She's widowed after her husband Adam has a accident, but she must flee again as his brother's find her blaiming her for his death. Her father is having none of it and so they both flee Bolton and head for Manchester and stay with her fathers brother Ambrose. Taking Kenneth the horse and her father gets work easily and so does Laura working in her uncle's office. Let's hope they can settle into a new life in Manchester. Laura finds she has to help her father on his coal rounds he's not a well man. I love this author's work I have read every single one of her books, she brings so much joy to her reader's. Her accounts of both towns Bolton and Manchester are so spot on and carefully laid out as you read. This book has it all so much sorrow love friendship that escapism with passion for Laura, I couldn't fault any of it. it's one heart warming story, it's Laura's own passion all rolled up in one book. Excellent for reader's, you will need tissues.

Set in the 1870s, Laura Cannock runs home to her father after her abusive husband dies and his psychopathic brothers believe she murdered him. When Laura's brother-in-law's come after her, she and her father pack up their meagre belongings and head to Manchester to seek refuge with her coal-merchant uncle.

However, it soon transpires that Laura's uncle has evil intentions towards her all of his own. When she threatens to tell her father, her uncle threatens to find out why they fled their last home. With no choice but to remain silent Laura convinces her father to move to a nearby house in a court (a sort of slum for people of little financial wealth), where she finds kindness in the strangers who are now her neighbours.

This is a nice, historical fiction with plenty of content. There are a lot of different challenges to overcome for the characters and the book deals with issues of revenge and forgiveness, family and love. Although this book does fall short of being one of my favourites because it failed to make me emotional, you do get drawn into the plot and I was keen to see what would happen next and how the story would end.

I am not too keen on the title of the book. I thought the book would be more about a daughters price from a sense of duty to her father, but it was more about the price Laura's father paid to keep her safe.

I like Laura's character, she is passionate and highly emotive. You can tell the author did a good job of building Laura's character profile before writing her story because Laura feels more like a real person than a fictional character.

Laura Cannock and her father, Amos, thought they would be safe and free from danger once they were in Manchester. They were very wrong. Living with her uncle only brought her new trouble, and her past soon caught up with her. Laura realised that she could not run away forever when she saw those that came close to her would suffer at her expense. She had only one choice, to return and face her past.

I thoroughly enjoyed A Daughter’s Price by Emma Hornby. It was a roller-coaster ride throughout with moments of intensity, excitement, shock, sadness, happiness, frustration and fear. I found the characters interesting, and the development of the storyline had me hooked from the first chapter. I enjoyed reading the historical aspect of the book; what life was like in a time so very different from how we live today.

Laura is a strong and brave woman during a time in which women had no rights and deemed as second class citizens to men. Sometimes I found her strength frustrating, knowing it would lead her into further trouble and in my head, I was pleading with her to do the opposite. This internal battle with the character made the book enjoyable, as Hornby was not giving the reader the obvious choices. Furthermore, the use of dialect gave the book life from old words such as ‘thee, yourn,’ and regional names such as, ‘lad, lass.'

There are a few predictable moments that does not deter you from the story but enhances it. You are aware of what is coming, even though it may take a while to happen; you find yourself reading on, hoping to be wrong and eager to know what will happen next. There are also a few shocks and surprises that have the same effect, and the mixture of the two kept me hooked to the very end.

After the accidental death of her husband, Adam. 23-year-old Laura Cannock returns to live with her father Amos Todd. But her brothers-in-law thinks she was responsible for Adams death and vow to cause her harm. Because of this, they flee Bolton for Manchester and Amos's brother Ambrose, who is a wealthy coal merchant. He offers them rooms and a job for Amos and their beloved old horse Kenneth delivering coal. Amos isn't as strong and healthy as he used to be, Laura picks up on this and offers to go out on his rounds and help bear the burden for her father. But have they made a big mistake.
Such a lovely book of love, loss, frustration and sadness.
Emma Hornby really knows how to bring a book to life even researching and using the dialogue of past times makes this book authentic and enjoyable.

I wasn't sure if I would enjoy this at the start, it seemed a bit over descriptive and I was struggling with the dialect. I had to remind myself that this book is set in the late 1800s and the speech is probably extremely accurate and true to how it was then. However, there is one thing that really annoys me which occurs time and time again throughout the story and that is Emma Hornby thinks that leaving out adjoining words is the right thing to do, ie 'and' and 'but'. It is not correct and it doesn't read fluently. I've seen this with other authors and I just wish they wouldn't do it. Hence my rating of 4 stars rather than 5.

Apart from the above, I did enjoy the story. It was well worked out and I would recommend it.

Great book

This is the first book by Emma Hornby , that I have read but it will not be the last.I really enjoyed it. How one young girl can put up with so much sorrow and heartache is beyond reasoning, but she over comes it in the end. It is well worth a read, and I am off now to download all the others by Emma. I hope they are all as unputdownable as this one.I will let you know soon. Joy Whitaker

I found this book enjoyable if a bit slow at times. It follows Laura Cannock and her life trying to escape from her husband’s brothers following his death which they believe she caused. The tale of her relationships and hardships was interesting but I did not find this book quite as gripping as the author’s previous books but nonetheless still enjoyed it .

A Daughter’s Price

This is a story. of fortitude and resilience. It is the story of triumph over poverty and abuse. The setting is authentic and the characters realistic. It all rings with truth.
Laura finding the money was a bit unrealistic as well as the “bad guys” all meeting a suitably horrible end.

This was a very exciting book. The story took me from what I thought was one main focus, and it expanded into quite an exciting and sometimes nail-biting scenarios as the story moved through the various characters as it unfolded. I thoroughly enjoyed this book as took me by surprise at different points, which was a pleasing read for sure!
