In a split second, the world is thrown into chaos when a terror attack like none other is unleashed. It isn’t just one city, one country, it is global.
While experts believe a virus will eventually bring about mankind’s demise, there is no planning for the one that brings the world to its knees. A terrorist cell releases a computer virus which infects the defense and missile guidance systems of every technological country across the globe.
They hold the world hostage. ‘Meet our demands or face the launch of every nuclear weapon.’
While leaders rush to end the siege, Henny Edwards focuses on a strategy.
She takes no chances and immediately starts to plan. She is aware that her lack of survival skills and knowledge are a hindrance, but she does all that she can, in a short span of time, to be prepared.
No matter the cost or sacrifice she vows she will protect her daughter, keeping her alive and safe above all else.
As the hours and minutes tick away, the launch of over three thousand warheads across the world seems inevitable. Even for as much as Henny plans, things go awry. Evacuation seems hopeless and Henny and her daughter are far too close to ground zero.
Faced with choices, Henny must find a balance between what is right and wrong, what is surviving or just living, and between protecting a child and preserving her humanity.
One of the weakest from Druga and I've read around 10 of her books. AS per usual we are thrown into the action just right of the bat and we get small info about the characters and plot as we go through. AS per usual we have a female main character with a child and she must do everything to save her daughter. This is quite normal trope from Druga as well.
The world is in chaos when some terrorists demand from the governments an amount of money (no way to know how man) or else they will deploy all nuclear weapons that exist. How they do it? Don't know... If I am not mistaken this is not that possible as the bombs are not in the same internet grid that we use - as far as I know.
After detonating 17 books throughout the world, it seems the world leaders don't do anything and say it will be fine. I mean just disconnect the goddamn nuclear from the internet OR disarm. OH there are three thousands... and how is that impossible to do? Oh well, if it was the book wouldn't happen right?
So the terrorist thing, you don't pay? so let's wreck the world. Unless they are some fringe NO LIVES MATTER group I don't understand how this would be good... But ok.
Our MC and her daughter get underground with some people they met on the way. Then it's the usual how to survive a nuclear apocalypse but dumb down. Everything is very simplistic and by the page 90% mark it seems the author just seemed to give up.
Compare with some of other novels this one felt incomplete, simplistic (even more than previous) although it was more dark and depressing. 71/100
Druga's books are like candy for me. Maybe not that good for me, but I find them fun. Some of her books are horrendous, due to poor grammar, types, etc, but stories are ok. Some of her science ones, are very good. this one was fine. It had fewer typos, and though the story wasn't unique, it was rather uplifting in a horrible, but scarily familiar situation of 'what if all the nuclear bombs are released'. i will continue to read her books, being thrilled by some, disappointed by some, but always , like candy, they are fun for me to read. Some are even as good as Godiva. I'm glad I discover her on Amazon.
I did really like this book, I liked the unique story. Most of the characters were likable enough but the main character I felt no connection to. She didn't mean to be cold but she was. I totally get her wanting to get her daughter to safety but she just didn't really try to connect with the people around her. Anyway, I didn't dislike her and I still was able to root for her. I really recommend this story, it was a very fast read and it was enjoyable!
This book is refreshing in that most of the apocalyptic books have everyone out for themselves and evil war lords everywhere. These characters weren't saints by any means, but they were willing to help and work together for the future. I'd like to think that behavior would be present in a real emergency. Good read!
That's actually uplifting and life affirming. This is a short story, not one of Jackie's multi-book epics (all of which are great BTW). Written with real life characters that say real life things. You can hear her trademark humor in the dialogue. I highly recommend this story and all Jackie Drugs books. I haven't met one I didn't like.
Love Jacqueline Druga books. Must be through half of them now. Although a lot of them are about the same subject on different levels, I think she does a brilliant job getting us to care about and love the main characters. This book does not disappoint although I would love it to have been longer.
This was a really enjoyable, apocalyptic adventure! Nuclear bombs are falling, the motley crew of characters have only a few minutes to find somewhere to survive! Good tension & excitement, I really like the plot & general feel of the story. I am not sure I actually liked the main character but this did not take away from the overall reading pleasure! A really good read!
Good pace, characters and lots of information / facts. Liked that the characters faced challenges from fall-out and not other groups. Refreshing to read a story without running from horrible people. Also liked that it was not a series.....they can get tedious.
What do I write about a book that ripped my heart out? It was dark and gut wrenching. There were a few grammatical errors but nothing that couldn't be over looked. The story was told with feeling and sucked you right into the moment.
I’ve just finished it and it was as is usual for her books an excellent read. A very believable story and a great group of characters who had a conscience. It’s a constant fast-paced book that is impossible to put down.
This was a very good book. Not so much action in this story, but a study of strangers who are thrown together in a terrible start to war and how they survive. Druga’s first person stories are always done very well. Henley was a bit inconsistent in insisting a group who entered the diner after the attack be allowed down near the cooler, but later balked at helping others. To be fair, consistency may not be a common trait at the start of nuclear war. There were some editing issues, but so many as in other books. I very much enjoyed this.
As usual Druga takes you on a ride like never before! Imagine a nuclear bomb is nine minutes away. What do you do to ensue the survival of your young daughter and yourself? This is an amazing story of what a parent will do to save her child and the friends they have made in this desperate journey to survive. This is a must read! Matter of fact all of Druga’s books are incredible. Go back and read them. You will not be disappointed!
A very good, quick read. You literally jump into a catastrophe effecting multiple countries across the world, with a threat of more to come. A group thrown together, attempting to survive with a common purpose of making a difference. Excellent!
Love books by this author. Her characters are realistic and behave like you or I would. There’s no miracle or cavalry waiting around the corner. Just real people in unreal situations.
Not a fast paced page turner but a great story and enjoyable reading. Good strong characters. I read a lot of post apocalyptic fiction and really enjoyed this one.
