"I needed you to let me burn in the flames of the fire that was set inside of me and burned me from the inside out so that I may rise as something you’ll have never touched. I needed you to let me kill myself so that I could be reborn from the ashes of my own scorched self."
Phoenix, Feral Kenyon's debut poetry book, follows Olivia Niida, a woman that grows up guarded and with the personality of fire incarnate. Passionate, fiery, and comfortable in her own isolation, she's content with going through life on her own until she meets the love of her life. This book follows her journey through self-empowerment, falling in love, heartbreak, and growing from her pain. Even strong people fall apart sometimes.
An absolutely gorgeous book. Pure art. I devoured it in one sitting, then immediately told my fans and friends about it. Every woman who has ever experienced heartbreak needs this book. Ms Kenyon is one of the most talented poetesses I have ever come across. Buy this book. Buy this book. Buy this book. You will cherish it forever. It was written for you. For all women. Forever.
An incredible collection made even more incredible as it is a debut introduction to a new author. The variety of hooks/technique and format styling showcases Kenyon's mastery of her craft. Olivia at her base level possesses desires and struggles that everyone can relate to, even if they do not share a similar background as her. Even in prose, her story is perfectly clear. Certain pages were painful to read through as situations so closely mirror events in my own life. You cannot help but root for her, hooked to page after page to see how she rises above the hardships life throws at her. Through Olivia we, the readers, are provided a second chance to overcome.
This little book of poetry tells a tale of birth, love, heartbreak, and death. Although it's dark, there is a glimmer of hope hidden in the verses. Softly lyrical with a portrayal of strong femininity. I'd recommend this to anyone who's had their heart broken and been left to pick up the pieces alone.
Feral writes the kind of poetry that hits you right in the heart and stays with you for days after you've read her words. There were times when I had to put the book down and check-in with myself. I felt as if somehow my own history had been spread across the pages. Anyone who has ever dealt with the devastation of heartbreak will find comfort and empathy in Feral's work. She does not leave her readers hanging in their dispair. Just like with Olivia, there is a light that will lead them home and back to themselves. Stronger than ever.
