Orthodox Prayer Life: The Interior Way

Saints who experience the power of prayer say it gives them wings to fly: wings of elation from being in proximity with Jesus Christ and relief from the burden of a sinful conscience. Once engulfed in the grace of the Holy Spirit, the person in prayer experiences death to sin, resurrection in the Spirit, and mystical ascension to the Father. The visible touches the Invisible, and joy wells up in the human heart.

This volume evolved experientially: the fruit of fifty-five years of solitude by a contemporary desert monk besieged by prayer. Father Matta's prayer life initially was formed under the direction of the sayings of the Russian Fathers, and later expanded under the direction of other Fathers, both Eastern and Western. He spent whole nights in prayer, reciting one or two passages from these luminaries and begging these saints to enlighten his understanding.

Father Matta discloses:

Whenever physical hunger turned cruel against me, I found my gratification in prayer. Whenever the biting cold of winter was unkind to me, I found my warmth in prayer. Whenever people were harsh to me (and their harshness was severe indeed) I found my comfort in prayer. In short, prayer became my food and my drink, my outfit and my armor, whether by night or by day.

Desiring to share the lessons he learned, and compelled by the Holy Spirit to do so, he wrote this volume so that he might impart to his readers "a whole course" on the life of prayer.

+ وُلد عام 1919.
+ تخرج من كلية الصيدلة عام 1943.
+ اشتغل في المهنة حتى سنة 1948.
+ كان يمتلك صيدلية في دمنهور.
+ وباع كل ما يملك ووزعه على الفقراء ولم يحتفظ إلا بثمن التذكرة ذهاب.
+ ترهبن في دير أنبا صموئيل في الصعيد يوم 10 أغسطس 1948 [اختار هذا الدير لأنه كان أفقر دير وأبعد دير عن العمران وأكثرهم عزلة].
+ كان يطوي الليالي في قراءة الكتاب المقدس بتعمق شديد وفي الصلاة والتسبيح حتى الصباح. وهناك بدأ يخط أولى صفحات أهم وأول كتبه وهو كتاب: ”حياة الصلاة الأرثوذكسية“ (الذي صدر عام 1952، ونُقِّح وزيد عام 1968، وترجم ونُشر بالفرنسية عام 1977، وبالإيطالية عام 1998، ثم بالإنجليزية ونُشر بواسطة دار نشر ٍSVS التابعة لمعهد سانت فلاديمير اللاهوتي بنيويورك عام 2002).
+ سرعان ما هزلت صحته بسبب فقر الدير الشديد، ولكنه أجبر على الانتقال إلى دير السريان ـ وادي النطرون (سنة 1951). وهناك تقبَّل نعمة الكهنوت رغماً عنه.
+ عاش متوحداً في مغارة وسط الصخور بعيداً عن الدير، وبعد سنتين، كلف أن يصير أباً روحياً لرهبان الدير وعلى الأخص للشباب المتقدم للرهبنة حديثاً. وهكذا صار رائداً للنهضة الرهبانية في الكنيسة القبطية في هذا الجيل.
+ أرجع الرهبنة إلى حياتها الأولى وأحيا من جديد روح الآباء النساك الأوائل بحياته الروحية والنسكية على أعلى مستوى، بالإضافة إلى روح أبوة وتلمذة وتدبير لأول مرة في برية الأسقيط منذ عصر الآباء الأوائل، مما جمع الشباب المسيحي حوله. ومن هنا بدأت أول جماعة رهبانية في العصر الحديث متتلمذة على أب روحي واحد كما كانت الرهبنة في بدء تكوينها.
+ ظل يدبر هذه الجماعة الرهبانية الأولى وهو في مغارته بعيداً عن الدير. لمدة سنتين (1952-1954). وهناك أكمل أول كتاب له: ”حياة الصلاة الأرثوذكسية“. (الذي تم الانتهاء من الطباعة في يوم الأربعاء 7 أكتوبر 1953، ونُقِّح وزيد عام 1968، وتُرجم للإنجليزية ونُشر بواسطة دار نشر SVS التابعة لمعهد سانت فلاديمير اللاهوتي بنيويورك عام 2002، كما نُشربالفرنسية عام 1997 وبالإيطالية عام 1999م).
+ في 1954 اختاره بابا الإسكندرية الأنبا يوساب الثاني (1946-1956) وكيلاً له في مدينة الإسكندرية (بعد أن رفع درجته الكهنوتية إلى إيغومانس "قمص") حيث مكث حوالي سنة وشهرين (مارس 54-مايو 55) هناك، ترك في شعبها أثراً روحياً عميقاً ما زال ظاهراً حتى اليوم في إكليروس وشعب الكنائس القبطية في الإسكندرية (حوالي 40 كنيسة).
+ إلا أنه في أوائل عام 1955 آثر العودة إلى مغارته بالدير ليكمل حياته الرهبانية في الوحدة والسكون، أُقيل (تلغراف من أنبا يوساب) وعاد إلى دير السريان. وآنذاك ازداد الإقبال على التتلمذ له في طريق الرهبنة.
+ في الجمعة 20 يوليو 1956 ترك دير السريان إلى ديره القديم (الأنبا صموئيل) طلباً لمزيد من الخلوة والهدوء. فتبعه تلاميذه الجدد إلى هناك.
+ ظل هناك 3 سنين رُشح خلالها للمرة الأولى ليكون بطريركاً.
+ في عام 1960 (29 يناير 1960 - فجر سبت لعازر 9 أبريل 1960) عاد هو وتلاميذه إلى دير السريان استجابة لطلب البابا القبطي الجديد البابا كيرلس السادس (1959-1971)، لكنهم آثروا أن يرجعوا إلى حياة الوحدة والهدوء والكامل للحفاظ على روح الرهبنة الأولى.
+ فذهبوا إلى صحراء وادي الريان 11 أغسطس 1960 (تبعد 50 كيلو عن أقرب قرية مأهولة بالسكان في محافظة الفيوم - في عمق الصحراء). وعاشوا هناك في كهوف محفورة في الجبال، حفروها بأيديهم، بحياة مشابهة تماماً وفي كل شيء لحياة آباء الرهبنة الأوائل أنطونيوس ومقاريوس. واستمروا هكذا 9 سنين.
+ ازدادت جماعتهم الرهبانية بالرغم من انقطاع كل صلة بينهم وبين العالم.
+ في هذه الفترة، ألَّف كتباً روحية كثيرة ما زال يقرأها حتى الآن الشباب المسيحي في مصر والشرق الأوسط ويتأثرون بها.

+ في سنة 1969 دعاه البابا كيرلس السادس مع جماعته الرهبانية (12 راهباً) للانتقال إلى دير أنبا مقار (منتصف المسافة من القاهرة والإسكندرية) بوادي النطرون (من القرن الرابع) الذي كانت الحياة الرهبانية فيه توشك أن تنطفئ وعهد إليه بمهمة تعمير الدير وإحياء الحياة الرهبانية في الدير من جديد. لم يكن فيه أكثر من خمسة رهبان (مسنين ومرضى) ومباني الدير توشك أن تتساقط.
+ من هذا التاريخ بدأت النهضة العمرانية والنهضة الرهبانية الجديدة الملازمة لها.
+ أصبح الآن (2006) في الدير حوالي 130 راهباً.

Most Christians are aware of two traditions, the Latin West and Byzantine East. There are two additional and equally important traditions that need further study by most westerners, the Alexandrian and Syrian.

Matthew the Poor (Matthew elMaskeen) is one of the best known recent Desert Fathers and a significant writer of the Coptic\ Alexandrian tradition.

This excellent work is readily accessible to all English speakers and brings the Light of the East and the Egyptian Desert to us.

Contemplative prayer from the Orthodox tradition. A fascinating perspective on the life of prayer that digs much deeper than most modern Coptic Orthodox writing. Fr. Matthew the Poor writes very practically on what a complete prayer life can look like and how to get there. This book was a revelation to me, including many things that I had only heard hints of in my reading of the early Fathers and nothing at all about in modern Coptic preaching. I found it most similar to what some Catholic authors have been writing recently on prayer, but strongly prefer Fr. Matthew the Poor's perspective on contemplative prayer to that other writers (such as Fr. Thomas Keating). This is a book that was very difficult for me to finish, because I didn't want to keep reading until I had really incorporated each step of the prayer life that Fr. Matthew the Poor had discussed into my own life. I highly recommend reading it slowly and incorporating his suggestions as you read, but have more grace on yourself than I did or you might never get through it!

This is one of the most important books I've ever read. It's more a matter of having worked through it because author and compiler, Matta El Meskeen, has provided us with an incredible treasure of resources for the inner journey. It is a kind of mini philokalia. This book will be intimidating to Protestants, but not as intimidating as philokalia itself. So, I'd say that Matt El Meskeen has done us all a huge favor and condensing and making more accessible so much of the wisdom of the desert dwellers (4th - 17th century I believe). And yet, the material will be necessarily difficult even as prayer and the inner life are especially difficult. I'm so glad to be reading this a second time for my final year of DMin studies at Fuller. I will likely be turning to it for a long, long time.

الأسلوب الذي يتبعه الأب متى في تجميع الأقوال والنصوص القديمة حول نفس المواضيع المختلفة التي تدور حول الصلاة، هذا الأسلوب جعلني أشعر بحقيقة الهدف من الصلاة في حياتنا، بحيث تصبح أبعد ما يكون عن مجرد روتين يومي أو واجب ديني. جميل أيضا أن تتيقن من أن جميع ما تمر به في حياتك وأفكارك يصلح كمادة للصلاة. فالله يتقبل صلاتك ويتفاعل معها على مستويات كثيرة. هو طريق مرسوم.. لكنه ضيق، كشف خباياه الكثيرون قبلك فلا تشعر بالعجز إن لم تعتد الصلاة قبلا. حرفيا فقد استطاع الكتاب أن يزرع في شوقا حقيقيا لجميع أنواع الصلاة.

I have read the Part One of this book twice, and I am in the process of reading it again. The book (to me) is very deep and powerful. It has changed how I view prayer. I hope to finish it by the end of summer. It's not a book I can just whip through, but I expect I will probably end up rereading other parts of the book as I go through it.
Anyone, not just Orthodox, that is seeking to deepen their prayer life may find this book very satisfying.

The Contemplative Life

A pharmacist before becoming a monk, Fr. Matthew gives a thorough view of the prayer life. As the author highlights prayer is being in the presence of God, so prayer is grounded in both Scripture & Tradition. He reinforces his teaching with writings from important monastics from both Eastern Christianity & Western Christianity.

Practical ways to understand prayer life. Every chapter has a quote by another church father/saint that gives input into that chapter's topic. Some of the topics were way above my paygrade, but the emphasis on quiet time and contemplation were extremely helpful

كتاب عظيم بمسابه مرشد ومعلم ورحله روحيه دسمه وممتعه ولكنه يحتاج ارشاد من معلم او اب اعتراف يعلم جيدا حالتك الروحيه ولو اتعاملت بحرفيه المكتوب هيكون متعب جدا محتاج انه يقرأ اكثر من مره وببساطه لانه ممكن يقلب بصغر نفس بس اجمالي من اعظم مما قرأت

خلصت كتاب حياة الصلاة الأرثوذكسية لأبينا القمص المتنيح متى المسكين، وهو كتاب ضخم حوالي ٧٠٠ صفحة، بالإضافة إنه غني بحق بالتأملات الجميلة والبليغة والأوصاف العميقة في الصلاة وأهميتها.

أبونا متى حلل الصلاة لأصغر نقطة فيها، شرح معناها، أدواتها، تأثيرها ونتايجها، كل حاجة. وصّل رسالة مفادها إن الصلاة هي اللحظة اللي الإنسان بيتحد فيها بالعالم الروحاني ويستقل عن العالم دة.

الكتاب مليان ببحر من الاقتباسات الآبائية لآباء الكنيسة الأوائل، زي إغناطيوس الأنطاكي وأثناسيوس الرسولي والأنبا أنطونيوس ومار إسحاق السرياني ومار إفرام السرياني وغيرهم، يعتبر كنز حرفيًا في أقوال الأباء.

يمكن الشيء الوحيد اللي مش متفق فيه مع أبونا متى هو كلامه عن طقوس الصلاة من حيث المطانيات وتوقيتاتها وهكذا عشان بشوف إنها تقييد للصلاة شوية عشان أنا بشوف الصلاة إنها نهج حياة وإسلوب معيشة مش تاسك معين لازم يتعمل بشكل معين.

بالإضافة لحاجات تانية زي الأيقونات وتقديسها، وسجود الإحترام والاعتراف لأب كاهن، بس كل دة نابع من كون أبونا متى أرثوذكسي المذهب وأنا لاطائفي فالاختلاف منطقي وطبيعي.

في المُجمل برشح الكتاب دة لأي حد محتاج يتأمل في الصلاة باعتبارها أعظم سلوك روحاني ربنا أكرمنا بيه.

Father Matthew the poor was undoubtedly a mystic on the highest level, but the book was really written for a wider audience and is really toned down in terms of its level. Some readers can be underwhelmed. Every chapter is divided into two parts: his own writings on a particular subject of the topic discussed and then included excerpts and sayings from the desert fathers.
