Absolutely loved it!

One of the BEST friends to lovers stories I've read.

I'm not a massive fan of YA stories but when they're done well there is NOTHING better. This is so well written, conveying such strong emotions with two MCs that absolutely stole my heart.

Theo and Chris have been best friends for years.16 years old but,at times, showing so much maturity that their age didn't really matter.

Theo has been in lust/in love...maybe for years but doesn't want to tell Chris how he feels in case their friendship suffers.

Young love, with all the raging hormones, uncertainties, and questions it evokes.

This Author perfectly portrayed these boys feelings.Told only from Theo's pov this is such a touching story....because they are truly best friends, before anything sexual happens and their friendship is what made this story so special...

Theo is quite a loner. His only real friend is Chris but as a reader this was perfectly ok and he has a beautiful relationship with his mother and as someone who has a son I found this relationship so,so special.I adored his mother.Theo definitely isn't confused about his sexuality,or confused about his feelings for Chris but he's young,so when another boy shows interest he can't quite resist.....a decision that will have far reaching consequences......

Although you don't get Chris's pov(which I definitely wanted),you still get an understanding of his feelings towards Theo and I think,it's a good Author who can convey that.

The supporting characters were well crafted although not always likable and I loved how the Author didn't go down the easy route with Theo's father and wrap things up with a nice big bow on things. She kept it real,believable...

I started reading this and couldn't put it down and, really, what's better than a book you are so totally captivated by that you want to race to the finish line but at the same time don't want it to end?

Ending with a strong HFN ( because they're only young ),but I can totally envisage a HEA.......

Note to Author

More of their story please....maybe a few years down the line?

I have to admit that this was a very very good YA story. It’s got seriously smart writing, capturing the awkwardness, the mixed emotions, the turmoil of growing up, all heady with insecurity and doubts and trying to find your place and voice while struggling with desires and pesky hormones. This brilliantly portrays the spirit of youth and lust, first crushes and love!

I also have to admit that this made me extremely anxious. I think I kinda now truly realize why I’m not such a huge YA fan. It’s all those said emotions above that are at times quite painfully nostalgic, contemplating the mysteries of looming adulthood and trying to make sound decisions through perhaps many a misstep. Soooo much is unknown and up in the air, and when you throw in the fear of coming out - which is completely reasonable and understandable - poor poor me was on edge pretty much the entire time.

Even though this is the classic friends to lovers trope where one MC is afraid to tell/show his feelings for fear of losing his bff, Lascarso really just brings her two protagonists Theo and Chris, to stark poignant life. I felt every emotion Theo went through, whether that was mortification, longing, hope, or dismay - all feels he had towards Chris. Chris isn’t perfect but he’s pretty damn close. I loved how these two knew each other so well, cared and looked after each other, and when it came down to it, their friendship was always their first priority. This also isn’t some fairy tale. Though of course I want everything to be 100% perfect and happy, we know real life’s rarely that and despite the wonderful ending here, Theo’s family and friends aren’t saints, and neither is he.

For those who fancy audios, who is Michael Mola and where the hell has he been all my life?! This guy is amazing. Seriously wow. He utilizes his voice with such fine nuance and pacing that I was impressed the entire time as he wonderfully depicts Theo and Chris, including the other supporting characters - warts and all. Here, Mola’s performance definitely elevated my enjoyment!

So, if you like coming of age tales, an ultimately oh-so-sweet friends to lovers evolution that has a good bite to it, then this beautiful (impressively sexy) love story, is assuredly one you need to read or listen to!! Don’t wait, go now!

Thank you to the author/publisher for the audio in exchange for a honest review

This is one of the most genuine YA's voice I have ever read. 🥰🥰
The characters talk, think and act like a 16-year-old. 🎯
It's the kind of authenticity I seek in my YA reads and Laura Lascarso has a knack for it.

**** 4 Stars!!! ****

Sometimes YA can be an intense and challenging read. They come filled with good old drama. Everything seems complicated as soon as we reach 13 and by the time we are 16 it feels like it’s us and our hormones against the world.

That being said, the first thing I need to mention is that “When Everything Is Blue” is not heavy on the drama. In fact, the story presented the perfect balance between the elements I was in a mood for. Not too light and not too angsty.
When Everything Is Blue is a story about discoveries,

friendship

and first love told in a witty, refreshing and most genuine teen vibe.

What I liked the most:

.) Best friends lusting for each other. I’m a sucker for this trope.
.) Great banter. I really loved the witty dialogue between the guys.
.) The whole family pack where we got to know a little bit about an annoying sister, a dick of a father and a hard working mother.
.) The beach scenario which was super well done. I could almost smell the sea. It transported me to the times where my friends and I used to sit around a bonfire on the beach. However, there was no guitar to my disappointment and we always had a guitar.
.) The chemistry between Chris and Theo. Killer.
.) How protective Chris was over Theo, like caveman style. Swoon.
.) I had a blast searching for pics and gifs to post here. It wouldn't be possible if I hadn't connected with the story.
.) And finally, I absolutely LOVED the boys!

LL writing always captivates me.

I enjoyed this story quite a bit. It was cute, sweet and more than a little touching.

Theo
was just turning 16, with Chris a year older, and they'd been best friends since Chris rescued Theo from bullies in the 6th grade.

I loved their friendship dynamic, how open and caring it could be, with even the smallest, most inconsequential of things.

But Theo had been in love with Chris for over a year, and Chris had a tendency to be buried under a pile of girls at any given time, leaving Theo with the realization that he had to do whatever it took to move past those feelings for his straight best friend. Basically, pretty typical fare for YA stories.

What wasn't typical, and honestly shocked me a bit was that there were actual on-page sex scenes between the young characters.

This began with "Asshole Dave", an obnoxious, new skater guy at school who loved nothing more than to tease and torment Theo. Theo thought that Asshole Dave didn't like him, but yeah, he was definitely wrong on that count.

After Asshole Dave finally cleared the air and let Theo know that he liked him "in that way," they began a string of casual hookups with one another, which, *shock*, didn't set well with Chris, who had come to suspect what might have been going on.

Now, the reason I keep calling the guy Asshole Dave, always will, was because he outed Theo in the most godawful, public way humanly possible. Theo had come to think of them as friends, in addition to them being casual lovers, only to be bitterly betrayed in a drunken moment.

And, although Chris was in no way happy about the situation, he fully had Theo's back, same as always. I loved those parts of the book.

The main drama in the story comes from dealing with the fallout over Theo's very public outing, aka "What’s in Wooten’s Mouth?", and Theo's non-relationship with his (also asshole) distant father.

Normally, that would be more than enough drama for me, but for some reason, this story still didn't feel like it had quite enough conflict. Please, don't ask me why. I really can't say. That's just how it felt to me.

I also really enjoyed the high level of feels and support between Theo and Chris, once they finally divulged their feelings and became a couple. I could definitely tell that the feelings ran deeper than just those below their belts.

One added extra of the book was the inclusion of Theo's Great Uncle Theo, his namesake. I adored the visits to see the uncle and my socks were blown clean off at the huge revelation about Uncle Theo. The part where Theo took Chris along was a real tear jerker of a scene.

While this book didn't completely excite me as much as I'd hoped, it was definitely a good, solid story with plenty to keep me entertained, so I'd rate it at around 3.5 stars.

Michael Mola is a new narrator to me, He did a good job, gave the characters distinct voices and bringing the characters to life.

The story is still as good as the first time i read it.

BEING HORNY and almost sixteen is the absolute worst.
Take it from me, Theodore Wooten III, resident expert in the spontaneous boner. The cause of my lovesickness: Christian Mitcham. The cure: hell if I know.

Yap and just like that I was hooked. I mean who can resist to find out if Theo ever figured out what the cure was.

“You have my heart completely,” I confess to him.
“You’ve got mine. Even though yours is probably bigger, judging from the rest of you.”

Oh! Young love, isn’t it just wonderful.

Theo is a sixteen year old, lawn maintenance technician (I don’t know if that is a thing), with raging teenage hormones, a constant boner and a huge crush on his best friend. Oh! And he is an awesome narrator. I loved being in his head. This is my first book by Ms. Laura, definitely not my last. I loved her sense of humor, the easiest way into my heart is just by making me laugh and she managed to do that with this little gem.

I enjoyed the relationship development between Theo and Chris, best friends to lovers is one of my favourite tropes. Chris was so supportive of Theo and vice versa. There were some really good kissing and sex scenes but not too explicit and I liked that this is YA after all.

I tear up then, a little bit, not really because of my dad, but because Chris has always been there for me—after every shitty visit with my dad, every argument, every rejection. He’s been the constant in my life, my role model, and my best friend.

What I did not like was Dave and Theo’s dad, these two are assholes. Theo’s dad takes the crown.

My father’s an empty box. I wonder if he was always like this or if life has sucked the good stuff away. For me, I’m in a bit like a free fall—my father doesn’t care enough to even pretend to try. Maybe he’s been pretending this whole time by trying to fill a role he was never interested in the first place.

Theo’s twin sister was your typical 16 year old, sometimes I wanted to spank her, sometimes I wanted to hug her, I mean all she wanted was her dad’s approval that she knew would never come and to be popular.

Theo’s mum and Paloma were great secondary characters.

Overall I ended up loving this book. I am not a huge fan of present tense narration, and I was surprised how much it did not bother me here. The writing was great. Cute, fluffy angst-free.

Recommended for all the YA readers.

I’m pretty sure Piglet was gay for Pooh, but that’s neither here nor there.

“I love you, Theodore Wooten the Third,” he says.
“I love you too, Christian Mitcham the First.”
“Muy, muy?” he asks with the bright-eyed confidence of someone who already knows the answer.
I laugh and free my arms to grapple him into a big bear hug. “Sí, Gordito, muy, muy.”

Heartwarming ✔️
Friends to lovers ✔️
Great writing
✔️

Theo and Chris have been best friends since sixth grade, but lately Theo wants Chris as more than just a friend. This is a coming of age story of first love in all its adorable and awkward glory ❤️

It's so simple, and yet beautiful. The best part: the MCs act and talk like actual teenagers!

They had such a great banter-filled friendship with so much chemistry, and I absolutely loved
how protective and possessive Chris was of Theo, aaahhh!!

“Hey, I don’t want you messing around with anyone but me, okay?” I glance over to find him staring at me intently, giving me the full-body meltdown. The look that has me saying, yes, yes, yes.
“You want to go steady with me, Boss?” I nudge him with my elbow, and he grabs for it.
“I want that shit on lockdown.”
I smile. It’s the cherry on my chocolate fudge sundae. “Done.”

Needless to say, I freaking adored this book. 💞

When Everything Is Blue was slow going for me. I actually started a few days ago and took a break to read another book.

Theo is the first-person narrator of the story, and I really missed Chris's voice. I love how protective Chris was of Theo (Theo loved it too). Theo's sister was annoying as hell, and I have no words for Asshole Dave. Theo's relationship with his mom was truly special, though, which warmed my heart.

If you enjoy young adult literature, you'll like this book. It has well-sketched MCs and secondary characters; a realistic, mildly angsty plot arc; a beach setting that made me nostalgic for warm summer nights; and a believable HFN.

There is some steam toward the end, which, again, is believable for two horny teenage boys.

The rating is a reflection of my preferences, not the book's merits. I just couldn't get invested in a teenage relationship. YA is not for me.

What a sweet story!☺️

I love me a good best friends to lovers trope. This had a bit of angst but it was enjoyable. I feel like it was somewhat short 😭. I would have loved an epilogue of when they are finally adults, so we could see a glimpse of their lives as adults and how their relationship has evolved since they stepped into adulthood.

Chris was such a sweetheart, wish we had his perspective too but nonetheless this was a fun, lighthearted read if you don't consider the existence of asshole Dave and Theo's dad.😌

Amazing.
The characters (main and secondary), their relationships, the MC's friendship and chemistry, their struggles, insecurities and playfulness, the storyline... I loved it all.
Being in Theo's thoughts was fantastic, I loved every second of the book.

I highly recommend this book to every MM romance reader if like me you-
a.Do not like reading books with teenage MCs

b.Do not have much liking for 'Friends to lovers trope.

Well, first of all, I understand that handling teenage angst is tricky. But, I also feel that a lot of authors make these MCs too shallow and unrealistic.
I hate it and can never relate to them. I mean I was no Mother Teresa at 16 but I was also nowhere near being a sociopath. However, Laura Lascarcso dealt with it quite well(this is my 1st ever book by her). The MCs do not act too mature but they do prove that even teenagers are serious about stuff important to them.

I liked the friends to lovers trope here, which is kind of a rare experience for me. In the start, there was all the angst of unrequited love but after that, the relationship developed beautifully. Undoubtedly, I loved Theo and then Chris as a friend. But, nothing can beat Chris as a boyfriend.😍😍
I also liked that the author focused on Theo's individual journey(coming of age) along with all the RD. But, don't go expecting angst because this one is a realistic take on coming-out and first love, no forced drama here.

P.S- "I’m pretty sure Piglet was gay for Pooh."
Well, I am 28 and I still love watching Winnie the Pooh but how come I never thought about this???🤔🤔

This had everything I love in a best friends to lovers romance. Everythinggggg! The initial shock of feeling ✨that✨ way about your BFF but shrugging it off in hopes that it will diminish if you distance yourself so you spend time with someone else to get over said BFF and BFF gets jealous and bummed out and there’s a sorta love triangle thing going on???? The angsty moments! The self discovery and finding out your identity, what really matters to you and your sexuality. The it’s-always-been-you vibes!!! Immaculate. The sexual experience that both people say was no big deal but, wait for it……….it WAS a big deal. So here’s the thing, I think I need to stop reading insta love stories. Just no more. Because this is just so much more fulfilling to me. Seeing solidified platonic friendships expand into intimate relationships just makes my heart soar. I love me a slowwwww burn story. Move like molasses, baby! That it did. That it didddd. Let the tension build until I’m screeching can someone make a fucking move already!!!!! (In this book their sexual tryst happened rather early but I was talking more about the establishing of feelings, them telling each other, getting into a relationship with each other etc. being a slow burn; which it was!) So please, I beg, if you would be so kind as to direct me to some excellent slow burns I would be ever so grateful. Thank you!! But seriously this was fantastic. The characters felt so full of life. They were vibrant and complex. I could see them right in front of me, along with the Floridian setting. The writing was beautiful and the plot was fantastic as well! Soooo yes if I say anymore I would just be trying to find more super wonderful nice great perfect adjectives to describe the book so ima shut up now😙

This was a high quality LGBT themed YA romance. If the writing wasn’t enough to impress me, then the complexity of the characters and the depth of emotions felt throughout the story definitely did.

As far as friends-to-lovers tales go, this one progressed damn near perfectly. The bonds of friendship were easily recognisable between teen MCs Theo and Chris, and their slow transition from best buddies to boyfriends was both authentic and convincing.

This story had its fair share of angsty moments but I still felt the overall vibe was fairly mellow, which may have been due to the characters themselves, with their laid-back and chilled out personalities, which they maintained even in situations of great personal change and emotional upheaval. There was a lovely and welcomed sense of realistic teenage maturity to both Theo and Chris that I greatly appreciated here, which is something you don't often see in stories featuring characters of their age.

In terms of coming-of-age romances, this was a really engaging and beautiful read. I look forward to exploring more from this talented author in the very near future.

the best kind of romances i personally love to read about are ones that have a mix of both fluff that will keep a smile on your face, but also emotional moments that will make you cry or feel for the characters and this had the right amount of both that i was able to feel invested in their story. i loved Theo and Chris' friendship and romance and the way Chris was so protective of Theo?? chefs kiss. i thought it was so sweet. oh, and .

honestly, the moment . i really adored this book and would rec if you wanna read something cute, but also emotional. first love/coming-of-age stories are always so heartwarming, i swear. 😭💗

4.25 stars. I’m going to have to work this weekend and it’s all this book’s fault.

Sometimes, my goal is simply to pick up a decent story that I can space off on for an hour and then go about my life (or, ahem, my work). But my friend Xia Xia wouldn’t let me do that yesterday… she told me the book I had planned to start was shit and that I needed to read this one instead.

So actually, it’s Xia’s fault that I have to work this weekend.

Because once I started this story, I couldn’t put it down. Didn’t even try very hard. Hours passed, mealtime, daylight, I couldn’t have cared less. Read it in one day, as long as a day is measured between sleeps and not by the clock, because I laughed at midnight and kept reading.

Theo and Chris weren't really flawed and had wisdom beyond their years. But here, it worked. I lost myself in their story and ignored RL while the waves of various emotion flowed over me. Today, maybe I’ll work… as long as I remember not to ask a certain someone for another book recommendation.

------------

2/12/19 - 2nd read. Loved it just as much. 💙

3.5 stars rounding up to 4 because I was up till dawn lost in this book. If that doesn’t deserve a 4...

We all have our favorite genres and we keep using them as safe places, as sure bets to get what we want. And that’s what YA books are for me: a place I need to visit regularly to avoid homesickness. So I jumped into this book eyes closed and eager to dive myself in, more than ready for the Florida waters. And I liked it, I did. I truly enjoyed the writing (I’ll be checking more of Laura Lascarso work) and it hooked me enough to have me up till ungodly hours.

This is a story of friendship and love. A story about finding out who you are. A story about learning how life works, what being gay is, and what being outed means. A story about surf, skating, high school and dreams.

The best:

- Them, Theo and Chris. Their chemistry is amazing and both are cute and sweet. Well, what they are is mostly horny teenagers guided by their hormones but there’s also a palpable love there, an easy camaraderie very well shown.

- I loved the coming of age part, the cute friends to lovers and how things developed between the couple.

- The sexy times are so good and in my opinion, very explicit for a YA story. Not complaining here eh? Because oh my, were the scenes hot. They are 16-years-old controlled by primal instincts so go figure how it goes.

- Theo’s mom is from Puerto Rico so there’s some chatting in Spanish that I enjoyed and appreciated. What a silly thing since I talk in Spanish everyday but I don’t know, I liked it a lot.

Not the best or the reasons I’m dropping one star and a half:

- The imbecile of Theo’s father and the selfish twin sister. Even if they are not that bad at the end, the stellar intro of the mean dad was a bit too much for me. I hate that kind of asshole characters who are bad just because and have the awful ability to drag everyone who stand by them (or sympathize with them) inside the same I hate you hole that stop me of enjoying their time on page.
I have a problem with people trying to satisfy other’s expectations when those others are uncaring, bad, untrustworthy people who don’t deserve your effort, and much less your heartbreak.
In Tabitha’s case (the sister) she is sixteen and I get her motivations or the lack of them. I was sixteen once too and I don’t like what I remember of the teenager I was because probably I was as egoistic as she is but her behavior bothered me anyway.

- Sometimes it looked like there was no evolution between the couple and their relationship out of the sexual exploration, but I guess things were just that good from the beginning. They are friends and neighbors and know each other perfectly so this book shows us that last step, that self discovering, strange blurred step that seems so far away but has been there from the beginning. They just needed to climb up, that little push that would change everything.

As you can see my complaints are little and based in personal tastes and dislikes. This last one about the development is not even a complaint and I must say Theo and Chris are cute and hot together. The feels are touchable, the same as the fears, the disappointment and the need . And as I said I loved the writing. it was refreshing and appealing doted with good dialogues and easy interactions.

So overall, a good book, a more than enjoyable story and a recommended read for YA fans

“Me encanto! Adore estas palabras que formaron esta tierna y dulce historia de primer amor.”

Switching back to English lol! I adore this story! Best friends to lovers, first love ah! to be so young again. Chris and Theo were so sweet, and I loved how much they treasured their friendship it only made their love even more beautiful. They had a bumpy road, but the connection they had was just too much not have turn into love. Honestly I could of done without a certain character but I got why he was necessary. I also would of liked an epilogue of Chris and Theo a few years down the road. Overall I enjoyed this so much. My first read by this author and hopefully not my last. 💜

When Everything Is Blue by Laura Lascarso is the story of 16-year-old Theo. The summer is over and with the end of the summer comes the return of his best friend, Chris. Chris and Theo have been best friends since the 6th grade but as years passed Theo realized that his feelings for Chris are more amorous than friendly. He fears he will lose his best friend if he confesses his feelings and instead starts casually hooking with the new kid at school to try to get past his infatuation. What ensues is a touching coming of age story.

Some highlights:

-Theo and Chris' friendship. They really were the best of friends. They were there for each other through thick and thin. Their feelings felt genuine, natural.

-The supporting cast. Asshole Dave and Uncle Theo, they were significant parts of the journey without overshadowing the main characters.

-The pace. One of my favorites things about this author's writing is how smooth her stories are.

-And the end was a strong HFN.

One thing, I'd classify this story as more coming of age than a romance. Characters weren't together for most of the book, and I got the sense that this was more about coming out and feeling comfortable in our skin than a romance between two friends. The love story felt secondary, to me.

All in all, a sweet story and I look forward to more from this author.

4 ‘best friend for life’ stars ⭐️ This book piqued up my interest since it was a coming-of-age, and friends-to-lovers YA story. This story was a gem, and I'm totally impressed with it.
A best friend is the one who is defending, supporting, and protecting you from everything. Chris was Theo’s best friend, and ever since they got together there wasn't anyone who could separate them.

“Chris has always been there for me—after every shitty visit with my dad, every argument, every rejection. He’s been the constant in my life, my role model, and my best friend.”

Theo felt cocoon inside himself when he thought about Chris, and lately, his thoughts kept drifting back to Chris no matter how hard he tried to forget about him altogether. The reasoning he should be far away from Chris bugging him constantly. He wanted to tell his developing infatuation with Chris to him. But he was too chickened out whenever the idea came to his mind. He feigned a brotherly friendship around him all the time.

Chris was thoughtful, generous, and friendly. Chris and Theo were too familiar with each other. But that was where the similarities end. Theo never had a friend other than Chris, but Chris had so many friends because he never felt socially awkward in front of people, and he could keep on a conversation without feeling uncomfortable.

I very much liked Chris. He was always backing for Theo, and he was a really good friend and boyfriend for Theo. Their relationship was kind of incredible. Once Chris and Theo became a pair, they didn't stop being a best friend for each other too. Chris was constantly looking after Theo, and it made me pull my heartstrings and warm inside of me. They deserve each other.

“I love you, Theodore Wooten the Third”
“I love you too, Christian Mitcham the First.”
“Muy, muy?” he asks with the bright-eyed confidence of someone who already knows the answer.
I laugh and free my arms to grapple him into a big bear hug. “Sí, Gordito, muy, muy.”

I loved every chapter and every word of it. Told by only Theo’s POV. But it didn't bother me at all, because I felt I know Chris well enough even though the story didn't voice his POV. Highly recommended.

I really liked this. Theo and Chris’ story was just so sweet and heartwarming, exactly what I needed right now to get out of my funk. Why not 5 stars, then? It IS rather unusual for me to give one of Laura's books less than 5 stars…

The thing is, it was almost TOO sweet for me! 🙈 Am I being a picky bastard right now? Maybe so, but this was just too easy at times. I mean, if it weren’t for all the stuff with Asshole Dave, and Theo’s dad, there’d be almost no conflict here (such a huge contrast with my last read that I almost got whiplash, btw), which made the story lose some credibility points.

BUT! I still loved how cute these two boys were together. Made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. This was a perfect feel-good read. ❤️

I loved this, and I've found a new author to love. I mean, it's my first book by this author so who knows if I'll continue to love her books, but I'm definitely reading more now :D

This was such a well written young adult romance. The world building was wonderfully done, the characters were enriched with complexity and depth, and the relationships were well crafted and developed.

I adored Theo and Chris together. They just fit, in their friendship and romantic relationship. And they were pretty typical teenagers at times while also showing maturity at times as well.

I always prefer a balance with teenage characters, because I feel that while yes some teenagers come off as shallow or just plain immature (and a few might well be), I also feel that they do have a maturity to them, a depth to them we often don't give them credit for.

So I felt like this author did a good job of writing these two as what their age was, 16 year olds with raging hormones, trying to figure out life and truly start learning how to grow up. And they had their moments of immaturity and stupidity and silliness - like both of them not just talking about their feelings to each other and assuming the others sexuality (*cough*Theo*cough*) and so on, although that isn't really just limited to teenagers lol (god knows I've read exactly that with characters that are supposed to be well out of their teens ;)) - but they also had more to them than that. They had hopes and dreams and fears.

Also, a character like Theo showed a hell of a lot more maturity than his father ever did (he was the worst) but ya know, sometimes people never grow out of their teenage years - meaning they always stay self-centered and immature and complete assholes. And in those cases if they have kids than their kids might become more of a parent than they ever were.

First and foremost, this is Theo's journey (we don't get Chris's POV, which I was bummed about. I think us as the reader can pick up on way more than Theo actually does, but it still would have been nice to get Chris' view on things) and he has some growing up to do. He's starting his sophomore year in high school, but he turns 16 about a month or so into the school year.

So before that, he tries to get over his best friend, because he thinks Chris is straight and therefore unavailable.

And then...*sigh* in comes Dave.

UGH. UGHHH.

.

So no, I never forgave Dave - and I was super happy that Theo never did either. But Theo, being such a good guy always trying for peace never went off on this asshole, which is not what I would have done lol.

Eventually, when the dust mostly settles with the whole Dave thing, Theo gets the courage to not only come out (well, the decision was taken out of this hands, but the decision to confirm that he was gay and tell his mother and sister and Chris and later his father was all his own), but to tell Chris how he feels.

What follows is sweet - and a little hot ;). This book didn't shy away from sex, which I was glad for, because I feel like with this...policing and social justing-ing gone wrong by a lot of people over the past few years, they've made it seem like 16 years olds are children (and while in some ways they can be and they aren't fully adults, they still are not children and in most places 16 is the age of consent. And the law doesn't actually mean what is 'okay' and 'not okay' the law does not determine the morality of things. At least not always.) and cannot have sex or think about sex and it cannot be shown or talked about or anything. It's bullshit, in my opinion.

Anyway, getting back off my soap box, the sex was hot and passionate and sweet. These two are each other's first love, and while first loves usually don't end up being the love of each other's lives, if I'm reading a romance book focused on a first love scenario, I'm gonna assume they do end up together.

So, who knows if these two end up together past the end of this, but I like to think they will. High school sweethearts and all ;).

I definitely recommend this, I adored this book. And I am a fan of this author and can't wait to read more :D

If you’re into YA books, there’s a good chance that you’ll love this one. It’s definitely not my favorite genre, but even I can see this book is a good specimen: not too much drama or sugarcoating, a touch of humor, and teenage MCs that act their age but can still deliver a good romance devoid of sappiness.

I liked Theo and Chris, their story is pretty much completely based on , but since they’re teenagers, it was 100% believable and I can’t hold it against them.
I liked how the author kept the story realistic without making it depressing, but I had forgotten that she apparently likes to put her MCs through some pretty awful stuff. While it was realistic, I might’ve picked the wrong time to read this book, in part because I wasn’t really in the mood for all that, even though the execution didn’t make it depressing, in part because I wasn’t in the mood to read about this kind of YA,
It also annoyed me that the author decided that It hardly seemed fair.

I did like Theo and Chris, individually and as a couple, though, so much that I can easily imagine them together in the long run, which isn’t always the case with characters so young. I was also glad that , so I’m rounding up, since I can’t give half-star ratings.

This book was exactly what I needed today. It put a smile on my face, and made me relive first love butterflies in my stomach.

The beach setting, surfing, skateboarding, best friends. First kisses. First sexual experiences. First love. Just the perfect gay YA story.

Theo is awkward, insecure, but also cool, quirky, sexy. Chris is the perfect popular athletic boy loved by all. I loved how they were always there for each other. I loved how possessive Chris was once they got together (and even before).

This was my second book by this author, two completely different styles, but both 5 stars.

All the reviews were right, this story is awesome!! I was a little hesitant at first because the main characters of the book are in an age that I don't identify with but, they sounded sweet together so I went for it. And oh, they were so lovely! 🥰❤

I loved Theo, I love people who are not extroverts, who society thinks are weird, because I'm an introvert as well, so I identified a lot with him and his inner banter and sarcasms were soooo good! In a world were people like Chris is more acceptable, Theo learned how to thrive in front of our eyes and that was so lovely to see.

The love was innocent and so full of doubts, there were so many misunderstandings caused by their age, I mean they were just starting to figure out what they wanted and who they were and in top of that they were in love, tough stuff. I loved Chris, I always knew he was in love with Theo but they both couldn't figure it out, they really had a special relationship and yes, every extrovert needs an introvert and viceversa.

I wanted an epilogue, young love is so fragile because they have so much to live and so much stuff that could take them apart, so I wanted to see them in a future, older and together, but I'll just imagine it.

This was so sweet, well written and the characters were developed in their age group, they weren't meant to be older, just sixteen and seventeen years old. Lovely, lovely story. ❤❤❤

I've rated this a B- for AAR which is equal to 3.75 stars.

It wasn't that long ago that I was a raving about newly-discovered-by-me author Laura Lascarso and her book The Bravest Thing. Right on the heels of said discovery came When Everything is Blue, and I was all sorts of grabby hands about reading not only another well-crafted m/m young adult contemporary but also getting to dive into another book by this author so soon after the first.

When Everything is Blue lacks the angsty emotional resonance, not to mention the darkness, of her previous book. Instead this title channels the sweetness, the newness, and the awkwardness, of a first love compounded by being in love with your supposedly-straight best friend while also occupying space in the closet.

I will admit that When Everything is Blue did take a while to pull me in. I didn't find the opening chapters as compelling as the other work of Lascarso's I've read, and Theo's preoccupation with Chris' looks and way he affect him is a little bit over the top and repetitive, right from the get-go. I found the author's continual statements that Theo was a dweeb or just plain weird to be repetitive also – if this is something I need to know, I'd much rather the author showed me rather than continually hitting me over the head with it. I was a little less than impressed by some of the supporting characters, such as Theo's rather annoying twin sister and his alcoholic deadbeat father (not that we're meant to like him anyway); however there's a great-uncle who has some truly moving scenes, and I really loved Theo's mum for all that she had a small role to play.

AUDIOBOOK FEB 2022: Good narration! Great coming of age story.

ORIGINAL REVIEW MAR 2018:
*This book was provided for free by the author in exchange for an honest review via the MMRG Don’t Buy My Love Program.*

What a delightful and delicious coming of age book! I simply ADORED this best friends to lovers novel by Laura Lascarso. It was funny, awkward, hurtful, and honest.

While the MCs are in their teens, the sexy times in here do not make the cut for standard YA reading. What does make the cut are all the feels. High school. Remember high school? It was lovely, dramatic, and painful. Everything was magnified to the nth degree. Add in social media and it becomes a minefield.

These boys felt, and I felt right along with them. One thing that I loved about this book was that it wasn’t your standard jock and geek book. Theo, not the golden boy, surfed and skated. Chris, the golden one, surfed. These guys were tight and had been for years. I liked that, and that sense of shared history came off the page.

As in real life, things weren’t perfect for our MCs. Jealousies and social media viciously attacked one of our boys. Coming out is never easy, but it should always be on your own terms. Not so here. Then there is the coming out to the parents. Again, bittersweet.

Was this book perfect? No. It was light on the angst—something I thought it could have had more of, but was happy that it didn’t. It suited my mood perfectly. I loved the part up to when Theo and Chris got together, but after that I missed a lot of the tension between them.

Overall, this book delighted me, especially Chris’ description of how a girl’s private parts had felt. It was refreshing to read a YA-style book with actual sex in it.

This was my first read by this author and I will certainly read more of her books!

A pleasant and easy to read coming-of-age story. I was seriously irked at a couple of the author's choices, but overall it was a worthwhile read. I recommend it to anyone looking for a YA friends-to-lovers story without over-the-top drama and angst.

This is a fantastic, heartwarming YA novel with some angst. I adored Chris and Theo together as they went from best friends to lovers and navigated some difficult situations together. I appreciated that the author went the realistic route of questioning one's sexuality and discussed some of the unfortunate realities that come with that. Dave - you're an asshole. I loved the connection between the two characters, as you could just feel how much they cared about each other. Theo goes through some tough stuff but learns some valuable life lessons along the way.

Since this is YA, I didn't mind the HFN ending. I think the author did a great job of wrapping up the story and still giving you faith in their future together. It does have some explicit sex scenes considering the genre, but I think this is still appropriate for teenagers.
