Foodie. Smuggler. Billionaire. Hypnotist. Just how much will one man (and his alien companion animal) endure in the quest to find a really great meal? When not running the company he accidentally founded, the Amazing Conroy, the greatest hypnotist in Human Space, travels the galaxy with his buffalito companion animal, Reggie, trancing aliens and searching for the next great meal. And yet, at every stop, he finds his life, his love, or his fortune on the line. Because he's Amazing, Conroy must match wits and test his hypnotic abilities against a host of aliens with mental powers of their own. Mind control, manipulation, and mayhem abound in a collection that will keep you brilliantly entertained.
Lawrence M. Schoen holds a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology, is a past Astounding, Hugo, and Nebula, nominee, twice won the Cóyotl award for best novel, founded the Klingon Language Institute, and occasionally does work as a hypnotherapist specializing in authors’ issues. He is a chimeric cancer survivor.
His science fiction includes many light and humorous adventures of a space-faring stage hypnotist and his alien animal companion. Other works take a very different tone, exploring aspects of determinism and free will, generally redefining the continua between life and death. Sometimes he blurs the funny and the serious. Lawrence lives near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with his wife and their dog.
Not laugh out loud hilarious, but thoughtfully funny. Light hearted, occasionally serious, easy to follow story lines. All the stories are well written and the timeline holds together well. The story introductions are just enough to add to the collection. I look forward to the rest and future stories.
This storyline is a blend of sci-fi, fantasy and rambling monologue. It’s an OK read, sometimes amusing, a bit jumbled at times and with an overall positive slant to the multiple story threads. Minimal character development tied into some interesting moments which resemble a book. Probably not a repeat read, but good enough for a once and done.
Buffalito Bundle is a new collection of the author's Amazing Conroy short stories (there are also Amazing Conroy novels and novellas). Conroy is a stage hypnotist in the 21st century who travels around the galaxy doing shows and getting into trouble. It seems a bit ridiculous, but that's the point: Conroy is a bit of a rogue, and these stories are usually funny with a side of alien wonder. The stakes are usually limited to Conroy and company. I loved how Conroy dealt with conundrums using his ability to (self-)hypnotize, even against telepaths. I flew through this collection in a few hours, and I definitely recommend this as a palate cleanser for anyone.
The included stories (and my summaries): * "Buffalo Dogs": How Conroy gets a buffalo dog (the first Amazing Conroy story written) * "Buffalogenesis": How Conroy makes some money. * "A Buffalito of Mars": Conroy solves an alien mystery. * "Requiem": How Conroy came to be Amazing. * "Mind Din": Conroy helps a scientist think great thoughts. * "Telepathic Intent": Conroy finds love and murder. * "The Matter at Hand": Conroy plays some cards. * "Yesterday's Taste": Conroy looks for a good meal.
Each story also comes with a note on its origin, something I always appreciate in collections.
Conroy is a great rogue. In every sense of the word. Not quite as big time as a certain Rat of interstellar fame, but fully endowed with trickery and a flexible concept of ownership. Following him through his escapades is very enjoyable an also brings to mind a diplomat of galactic renown. Fans of Harrison and Laumer should find this character comfortable and enjoyable.
