What if Questlove threw a dinner party and everyone came?
Named one of fall's best cookbooks by Los Angeles Times, GrubStreet, and Eater
“Even with its many flashy co-authors, Mixtape Potluck never wavers from its earnest stated intent: to help readers plan the best possible dinner party. With friends like his, Quest is one to trust.” - EATER
Questlove is best known for his achievements in the music world, but his interest in food runs a close second. He has hosted a series of renowned Food Salons and conversations with some of America’s most prominent chefs. Now he is turning his hand to creating a cookbook. In Mixtape Potluck Cookbook, Questlove imagines the ultimate potluck dinner party, inviting more than fifty chefs, entertainers, and musicians—such as Eric Ripert, Natalie Portman, and Q-Tip—and asking them to bring along their favorite recipes. He also pairs each cook with a song that he feels best captures their unique creative energy. The result is not only an accessible, entertaining cookbook, but also a collection of Questlove’s diverting musical commentaries as well as an illustration of the fascinating creative relationship between music and food. With Questlove’s unique style of hosting dinner parties and his love of music, food, and entertaining, this book will give readers unexpected insights into the relationship between culture and food.
Note: The cover material for this book is meant to mimic the texture and tactile quality of tinfoil and is intentional.
Ahmir Khalib Thompson, known professionally as ?uestlove or Questlove (also known as BROther ?uestion, Questo, Brother Question or Qlove), is an American drummer, DJ, music journalist and record producer.
He is best known as the drummer and joint frontman (with Black Thought) for the Grammy Award-winning band The Roots, serving since February 17, 2014 as the in-house band for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the same role he and the band served during the entire 969 episode run of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
He has produced for artists including Elvis Costello, Common, D'Angelo, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Bilal, Jay-Z, Nikka Costa and more recently, Al Green, Amy Winehouse and John Legend. He is a member of the production teams the Soulquarians, The Randy Watson Experience, The Soultronics and The Grand Wizzards.
Funnily enough, this book served more as an inspiration to host fun gatherings than it served as a cohesive cookbook. I'm not mad about that, though. A eclectic menagerie of recipes with some less-than-stellar photos didn't detract from the fact that this book is a love letter to cooking, eating, sharing, and gathering. I enjoyed reading through it (honestly, the writing is charming) and will definitely try more of the recipes!
I was really glad to have Questlove as a roommate when the library shut down during the pandemic. Maya Rudolph's chili recipe took SIX CANS of my quarantine pantry items though, and I'm not sure I'll keep her habit of adding chocolate chips and Fritos to chili. There are some great ideas in here and visually the book is sumptuous, with fabulous endpaper drawings and the big heavy shiny cover. Ultimately I had to concede that I will never get to attend a potluck with Questlove.
The book feels like a trainwreck, a party of hipsters, famous chefs, hollywood people, and very good recipes with the very worst of 'very good vegan' and recent wacky food trends.
I consider this as an essential time capsule of the 2010s to compare fifty years back to 1965 with James Beard's On Entertaining!

I hate half of the book, I love half of the book, it can vary from a six to a eight rating in parts, possible a low of five to a high of nine, depending on what the recipes are.
I love it for being freaky, but no way in hell i'll ever ever like 35% to 40% of the recipes. But all of the recipes, 90% of them are extremely extremely well done!
I took this out of the library on a whim. Here's why I liked it:
1. Songs for each recipe! This is also a feature of another favorite cookbook of mine, Vegan Soul Kitchen by Bryant Terry. The difference is here, the songs are selected by Questlove not to match the dish but to match the person who made it. So that's cool! 2. Celebrity recipes ala Alice B. Toklas. That is, Questlove picked famous people who can really cook, and you might find a recipe that you don't expect! Not hash brownies like in the Alice B. Toklas cookbook, but it's still pretty cool. 3. Book was written in 2018 and came out in 2019, back when ingredients were relatively affordable and having a lot of people in your house didn't mean risking catching COVID-19. I'm not talking about caviar or crab meat (I don't eat the latter anyway.) I used to really need a recipe like Zooey Dechanel's bok choy and cucumber salad for 10 people. It's hard to find affordable bok choy, I have to shop around. The photography is similar to some other cookbooks I have read from 5-8 years ago--I think there were food styles that got popular. Anyway I liked putting myself back into that headspace.
I liked the idea about this cookbook and in the introduction, it is explained in detailed how this cookbook came about. It’s a song inspired potluck. A song is selected and individuals are invited to prepare/cook something as the tune played. The dish didn’t have to reflect what they were listening to, it was just a reflection of the person preparing the dish. This sounded like an entertaining way to prepare some food, get friends together and get to know one another.
I was entertained with the music choices for some of the individuals chosen for the book. Martha Stewart’s Grape Focaccia’s was paired with Snoop Dog’s “Life of Da Party” and a cocktail prepared by Dave Arnold called Red Skies at Night featuring white run, wildberry honey, red chile flakes and vegetable glycerin that was paired with “Sounds of Silence” by the Beastie Boys. This cocktail looked good until I read the ingredients, as it reminded me of a drink I used to drink, the Slow Comfortable Screw. I guess I got tired of the orange juice.
It’s a very organized cookbook: with the recipes broken down into categories and there is even a list of guests that are included in the book. There’s an index and some tips on how to create your own playlist. Every recipe in the book has an illustration and I enjoyed reading the little paragraphs that accompanied each recipe about how the song was chosen. It was an interesting and fun cookbook and I enjoyed reading the Afterward and Introduction. Unfortunately, the recipes were nothing that I would fix. Spinach Pie, Tuna Pasta a la Popowendy, Thit Kho Tau, Bourbon Raspberry Tea- those are just a few random pages of the book. I did enjoy the book; the idea was fantastic but the recipes were not of my liking.
Lots of awesome things that you can bring to a potluck, many new ideas that you'd never even think of! I actually scored this book for $4.00 at Dollarama! 🤣🤣🤣 Don't tell Questlove though!
First of all, this is not a book by Martha Stewart. She wrote the intro and contributed one recipe. Questlove is a DJ for a famous late night show. He knows plenty of celebrities and had them all contribute. In return he sent them a song inspired by themselves or their recipes, each one described in the book. He also has sections on hosting a potluck and creating a playlist for it. Of course you can find the playlist on Spotify. Personally I liked the jazz, oldies, and novelty songs about food, not most of the hip hop. But it was interesting, an added plus to a cookbook. At first I didn't think I liked most of the recipes, but when I started to read his comments, they grew on me. Potlucks are full of stuff you wouldn't make yourself, but you like to see what other people make. This book is like that. I had to return it to the library, but I think it also had nice photos.
I LOVED the concept of this book! A kind of synesthesia of food and music. I listened to each song as I read the recipe it went with, and was introduced to a lot of cool tracks I didn't know before. The whole thing felt like an interactive and artistic experience.
There were only a few recipes I'd consider trying myself, but I'd definitely go to this potluck party!
Recipes of note for myself: - Open-Face Mushroom Sliders with Maple Chipotle Aioli by Haile Thomas (p. 97) - Spicy Sweet and Sour Chicken with Lemongrass by Andrew Zimmerman (p. 145) - Country Captain Chicken by Mashama Bailey (p. 152) - Ginger Beer by Thelma Golden (p. 179) - Tina's Cold "Pizza" by Jarobi White (p. 198)
This book serves as a great inspiration for hosting your own dinner parties, as well as providing 40 odd recipes you can make to bring to friends dinner parties.
Prior to the night of the dinner party Questlove sends each guest a song selected especially for them to inspire them while cooking their dish for the dinner party. He choses the song for them based on what he knows about them and their creative lives. The list of guests in the book are drawn from the worlds of food, music, tv, comedy, design, literature and technology. the songs mostly have some loosely related "food" theme.
The book is divided by the food type/when it will be served during the night. Arrival snacks/small plates/soups & stews/sides & salads/vege/meat/desserts etc. Some of the dishes include:
-Zooey Deschanel's Bok Choy and cucumber salad (Joint2Joint by Prince) -Tom Sach's Studio Standard Cocktail Spread (Outa-Space by Billy Preston) -Maya Rudolph's Chocolate Chilli (Herbert Harper's Free Press News by Muddy Waters) -Jessica Koslow's (owner of Sqirl in LA) Tomato/Potato Salad (Cereal Killer by Method Man ) -Haile Thomas's Open-face mushroom sliders with maple chipotle aioli (Chicken Grease by D'Angelo -Jessica Biel's Blueberry Crunch Cake (A house is not a home by Luther Vandross) -Jarobi White's Tina's cold pizza (which is different to what it sounds like) (Pease Porridge_)
I like to cook but I hate potlucks (or as I refer to them, parties that force you to be complimentary about other people’s shitty food). I love the idea of a dinner party but have only been organized enough for a handful. I loved the idea of songs tailored to specific individuals to prompt them for recipes, and found this book completely charming. The pandemic means I’m still wary of dinner parties but this book reminds us of what we have lost.
This was cool, funky, cleverly presented - much like the author himself. I wasn’t familiar with most of the music, and wasn’t compelled to queue up any tracks since I’m 60+ and not the intended audience for this book! Grateful the library system offered the e-book for a quick perusal. I didn’t flag any of the recipes but I can see how this could be an inspiration to invite people over to cook!
A gimmicky cookbook with an engaging gimmick. I'm probably not exactly the target audience for this book, as I care little for all the celebrity name-dropping. I had read another book by Questlove, though, and will certainly listen to the accompanying playlist.
For people who like music, celeb gossip, food, or some combination of the three - you'll get something out of this.
3.5/5.0 Questlove provides a rationale for which song is paired with each guest and their recipe. Entertaining! And the full playlist can be found on Spotify. Recipes from Jimmy Fallon (of course!), Martha Stewart, Zooey Deschanel, Marisa Tomei, Fred Armisen, and more look reasonable to make.
Difficult recipes with lots of prep, uncommon ingredients and didn't sound all that tasty. One that I wanted to make with chickpeas is missing a step. It tells you to put the chickpeas in water but not for how long or what temp and then all of a sudden assembles the salad.
The recipes DO look amazing and I'm looking forward to trying several, but what makes this book awesome is Questlove's thoughts and commentary on get togethers. I knew this book would be fun; it was better than I thought.
I love the idea of having a mixed tape playlist with your potluck and I loved all the recipes in this book. Now I just need to figure out how I can get invited to one of his food salons. Quote the Prince: “I mean, really.”
questlove assigned famous people songs to inspire a potluck recipe. I had only heard of some of the people and almost none of the songs, and yet I found the whole idea fascinating.
Fun, easy read and great tips on hosting parties (potluck or not). Explored the music mentioned and liked most of it. Now to tryout the recipes, playlist and plan a potluck party.
This was a fun read. I did come across a few recipes to add to my rotation. I got a real chuckle reading Maya Rudolph shared memory about her mom and Stevie Wonder.
Offers a variety of recipes from something more complex (at least to me) like Osso bucco with fennel soffrito to something more simple like Mac n cheese (homemade, not box variety). I like how each recipe provides some connection to the author with the contributor and a song to go along. I can almost picture the party with the music in the background. There are options for vegans to meat eaters. Interesting drink recipes, including one on how to make your own ginger beer. I also like the comments at the end for tips on a successful party or as a guest, if you can’t cook, then bring ice and a plant. It’s an easygoing book to set the mood for an easygoing party. No pressure!
Update! Loved this so much I bought a copy so I can revisit the party advice and playlist and start making the recipes! (All right, mainly my spouse has started.)
Original post: I haven't tried any recipes—yet—but the party advice, playlist, and song gifts to his friends are excellent. Must be absolute joy to be buddies with ?uestlove.
I really enjoyed reading Quest’s side notes and listening to the songs as I went! On the downside, some of the dishes had ingredients I would not likely buy and if I did, I would have to find some other dishes to make with it. 🤷♀️ So, not everything felt accessible as a family with kids weeknight dinner and I didn’t expect it to but wanted to share in case anyone was curious on that aspect. Overall, for me, this was worth a look based on the interesting premise more than the recipes, though I did save a few! Jessica Biel’s Blueberry Crunch dump cake is right up my alley! 😊😂
