When a bitter betrayal and small town gossip propel Grace and her mother from coastal Australia to a new beginning at a picturesque Victorian-era lifestyle village in the borderlands of England and Scotland, twelve-year-old Grace is convinced she's left her battle wounds behind.
But unfinished business has a way of following you, even across the seas, just as though you'd tucked it neatly in your suitcases along with your crystal collection and favourite books.

This is a fabulous time-slip story just right for a teacher read aloud or an independent reader for confident readers aged 8+years.
As an adult reader I really appreciated the secondary characters and family & friends of the main character- thoughtfully and carefully crafted creating a well-rounded and relatable character in Grace.
The historical aspects and literary personalities are a wonderful touch leading young readers to older, classic titles.
Whooli Chen’s artwork has been used for the cover and at the start of chapters. Independently, it’s a lovely tribute and response to the text.
I have looked at Whooli Chen’s social media and her artwork is splendid.
It pains me to say the cover of ‘Grace’ssecret’ does not engage younger potential readers. But please, do pick this book up and give it a go- it’s really a lovely story.
A wonderful text to read, share and to follow down rabbit holes.
Grace is living her dream. Mum has taken a job in an historic village and they live in a castle. Grace gets to dress in period costumes and play they part of a Victorian young woman.
Castles have secrets and unknown passages. A mysterious map with fading ink leads Grace into the past. Where she sees life as it really was in Victorian England. She meets extraordinary people including famous writers. Grace sees illnesses that can kill but are curable today. She sees poverty and filth that are managed with running water and sewerage systems. Can Grace help her new friends from the past?
I enjoyed the mix of characters and the intertwining of historical writers into the story.
The story is great however the cover will need some work in order to appeal to children. As a teacher librarian I have raved about this book to classes, but when I asked if they would pick it off a shelf themselves, they all said no.
