The fan service just keeps escalating, resulting in sexual assault this time around with the introduction of the predatory lesbian trope.

It's a real shame the creator is so obsessed, because the rest of the book has been intriguing and surprising.

But that shocking cliffhanger will probably have me coming back despite my better judgement.

I'm not 100% sure what happened in this volume, there was a lot of talking and for some reason a lot more nudity. It didn't have a lot of context which was weird, seems a lot of the monsters are creating friend groups in order to collect coins, though it's not explained why any of the groups exist thus far.

Even though I haven't got a clue what is going on for the most part, I'm still very much enjoying the world building, it's getting to be quite a complex series.

In summation, Claire and Shuichi are dancing on a knife's edge . . . all day, every day.

The duo finds itself scrambling around the unoccupied mountainous region known to house coins from the alien guy but are immediately met with an array of life-altering challenges. If the team encounters another collector, will they negotiate with it or fight it to the death? If the team collects a whole bunch of coins, will they press their luck by continuing the search for more or will they return to the alien guy to reap whatever rewards they can muster?

In GLEIPNIR #3, whatever confidence and fortune Claire and Shuichi had at the end of the previous volume is abruptly wiped away. They encounter other collectors, but these aren't monsters who are driven to violence through random bouts of madness. Not at all. These are monsters whose brutality and death-dealing is on a completely different scale. The team encounters a demonic fellow with blades for arms who damn near wipes them off the face of the planet. And then there's a cheeky little psychopath whose emotional distress over family abandonment manifests as a pair of conjoined giants with fangs for teeth and shackles around their necks. Yep. Definitely on a knife's edge.

The manga appears to have officially stepped away from what one might typically ascribe the duo-life nature of fantasy/horror adventure comics. Readers are no longer keeping an ear to the ground for Shuichi's schoolmates or are wondering what impact these monster-hunting activities will have on his social life. From this point forward, it appears, readers will be completely and totally immersed in Claire and Shuichi's skulking through violence in search for answers to questions of which they themselves aren't quite sure they want answers.

Elena Aoki is Claire's mysterious (and mysteriously violent) elder sister, but it turns out Elena is working with a team of grisly monsters. Do Claire and Shuichi really want to know what Elena is up to? And as the duo endeavors to build their own team of sorts, it turns out their newfound allies have a plethora of psychosexual hang-ups that could make future work difficult, to say the least. Do Claire and Shuichi really want to know why the mystery babe with the long hair wants them to pledge their loyalty upon penalty of decapitation?

GLEIPNIR #3 is exquisitely drawn but still feels a little lost. Perhaps this is because there remains no stated antagonist to the series — Elena remains the goal, not the opposition. Whatever the case, the author's imaginative manifestations of the angst, darkness and uncertainty of humankind, as “monster” transformations, begets an interesting rogues gallery of characters whose young lives are woefully unfulfilled. It will be interesting to see how this sub-narrative will evolve as the story develops.

This volume is one big bag of tropes, for the most part. Guy who just wants to be the strongest? Check. Timi loli who just wants everyone to get along? Check. Super murderous edgelord? Check. They might develop into more rounded characters later, but as of right now, it's like Takeda just picked them up ready-made off a shelf. There is one that's a little different, but given their immediate reaction upon meeting Claire is, pretty much literally "you hot, let's bang," I don't have high hopes.

And that actually brings me to another issue with this volume. I don't mind fanservice in the least, but there's a somewhat lengthy section that seems so forced that it borders on straight-up hentai. It bears only the slightest relation at all to the plot, and if that kind of titillation was what the series was based around (a la Monster Musume), I wouldn't mind. But I'm here for the weird superpowers and body horror, and the sexy time, while well-drawn, really took me out of what plot there is here.

You may be asking yourself, if this volume is such a letdown, why did I give it 3 stars? Well, two reasons: First, of the mostly uninspired new characters, there was at least one that I found at all likable...and then they end up getting killed...sort of...maybe. Second, this volume ends on a strange note that looks to really play up the body horror aspect of things, and I'm a enough of a sucker for that stuff, that I'm willing to give Gleipnir one more volume to see where it goes. Because it really does feel like there might be the potential for something truly worthwhile under all the flaws, if the series can just get out of its rut.

Story 4,0/5

I underestimated this series.

Based on the rave reviews of the anime (which I have not yet watched) I anticipated it would be good. I did not anticipate how many interesting layers there would be to it, both in terms of plot elements and symbolism. Yes, once you get past the graphic nature of the series (something a lot of people seem unable to do) there's actually quite a lot going on under the surface.

5 stars out of 5.

The action of the first half of this volume was extremely thrilling. It set up a good sense of power scale for the series going forward. I thought the artwork was once again top notch, the fear of facing something beyond comprehension was well captured in the final pages. The fan service of the volume was a bit overboard for me and I hope it gets toned down a bit in the future.

Really thought this volume was great it built on the power scaling and help understand why collectors became monsters, however like the previous volumes the negative is the fan service especially during the ritual it feels like it’s trying to hard to push what acceptable and what’s not .

I continue to enjoy the murder fursuit. There's dog head pats in this one. Very lewd.

I'm definitely obsessed. It's so stupid. They're starting to make other monster friends! So fun! But I'm officially over the fan service/escalating nudity/assault(s). It feels weird.
