Greg Belmont always believed he was an ordinary kid. Sure, his dad is a bit on the eccentric side, obsessed with organic soaps and cereals. Sure, his best friend at school also seems to be his ONLY friend. And, sure, the Belmont family in general seems prone to bad luck, especially on Thursdays. And, sure, he got attacked by a polar bear on a field trip to the Lincoln Park Zoo. Yes, it smashed through five layers of safety glass to get to him, but that could have happened to anybody. So he’s genuinely shocked to find out the secret that his father has been keeping from him for years: he’s a dwarf (cue meme of Hagrid shouting, “Yer a dwarf, Harry!”) As magic is returning to the world, the age old battle between dwarves and elves is heating up again, and Greg is caught in the middle …
The book is lots of fun. Rylander has a great time building this version of Chicago where elves and dwarves live unnoticed among ordinary humans. Some of the passing mentions of real world celebrities who are really one or the other made me smile. The action moves at a brisk pace, and the chapters are just short enough to entice the reader into, “ … just one more.”
This was billed as a middle grade title, but, as one whose own middle grade years were an embarrassingly long time ago (let’s put it this way: I graduated high school in 1986), I found this to be an enjoyable fantasy novel by any measure. It does end on a To Be Continued moment, but events do resolve to the point where I didn't feel cheated out of an ending. Recommended!

Greg Belmont discovers that he's a Dwarf and there's a whole world of Dwarves, Elves, and magic that he never knew existed. When his father is kidnapped by Trolls and his own magical abilities are triggered, Greg is whisked away to the world of Dwarves located underneath Chicago. There he makes a few Dwarf friends (and befriends an annoying talking axe) and learns of the tense history between Dwarves and Elves and finds himself training for a war that is expected to arrive with the reemergence of magic.
Middle-grade fantasy is probably my most favorite genre to read, so I was very excited when The Legend of Greg arrived...unfortunately, I found it to be disappointing.
The Legend of Greg certainly has a few positive things to offer. The world-building is actually good and captivating. Rylander builds his Dwarf world from the bottom (of Chicago) up and infuses this world with fresh and imaginative fantasy elements, well thought-out history, and cool settings. Most of the humor throughout the story, whether punny and cheesy on purpose or acerbic, is chuckle inducing. The brisk pace and constant action certainly make this a page-turner. And Greg makes for an interesting and likable enough narrator and hero.
However, I found the negatives overshadowed these positives. While I enjoyed many of the laugh-out-loud moments, the dialogue is often cringe-worthy, over the top, stilted, or, in much of the latter parts of the book, feels out of character. Other than Greg and his friend Edwin, most of the characters feel flat, uninteresting, and their personalities kind of just meld into one typical background character. Then there are characters like Glam (one of Greg's new Dwarf friends) and Buck (his revered Dwarf instructor) whose behaviors and actions are meant to come across as amusing in an "oh that's just them being them" kind of way, but really make them bullies who seem to lack empathy. Buck's harsh teaching style toward Greg, that includes verbal abuse, is explained by Buck simply expecting great things from Greg and pushing him extra hard to "help" him be prepared for anything...this behavior is actually pretty alarming, especially since it's so easily excused away. And there seems to be a lack of diversity (racial and cultural) amongst the characters, which is always so disappointing in kids lit.
Dwarves are big eaters, especially meat, which is fine on its own, but their views on animals and animal rights is pretty appalling and treated in such a lighthearted way. Then there's a recurring motto throughout the book that Belmonts don't cry (not that they physically can't, they just don't), which sends such an awful and dangerous message about machismo and bottling up one's emotions. There are some heavy and important topics that are either alluded to or outright discussed in The Legend of Greg- racism, feminism, body image, bullying, healthy/unhealthy relationships, politics- and many of the issues the Dwarves and Elves have faced and do face, mirror many Real Life issues that are prevalent today. I am ALL for topics like these being discussed and explored in middle-grade books and, while I think the inclusion of these issues/topics/themes in The Legend of Greg and the messages trying to be conveyed are well intentioned, the approach and execution is lackluster, ineffective, and at times send mixed messages. Overall, when it comes to these issues/topics/themes, the story seems to be all snarky preachiness with no substance or true depth.
Honestly, while reading The Legend of Greg, so much of the story just didn't sit well with me. Middle-grade readers are smart and insightful and I have no doubt that they could not only handle any of the negative issues I've mentioned, but form their own thoughtful opinions and reactions to them...but, bottom-line, there are SO many other, better middle-grade fantasies that I would recommend before this one.

This is definitely the next Percy Jackson. I was starting to read this book, but immediately I fell in love with Greg. He is relatable to most pre-teens. Even though his dad has some quirks, he secretly loves those quirks and has a great relationship with him. Edwin is his best friend who is considered to be “perfect”, but he loves being able to be with Greg because it allows him to just be himself. His friends expect him to love sports, but he secretly loves chess and bad puns even more. A good portion of the book is spent explaining their friendship, which was important in my opinion. Middle schoolers sometimes try to be “perfect” and live up to what their friends expect. Greg is imperfect and has a quirky father, but he accepts this fact and doesn’t try to constantly change himself. He doesn’t have to wear a mask, because no one expects anything from him. Edwin is “perfect,” but because of this, his popular friends expect him to act a certain way. He likes being able to take off the mask with Greg.
Back on track to the Dwarf story. It actually takes a bit of time before Greg is fully thrown into the main plot of “Yer a Dwarf!” This was important to me because it gave me the chance to see who he was as a person before he is given his powers. After he is told the truth about his heritage, he is thrown into the Underground, the world of Dwarves beneath Chicago.
This is really where the world-building comes into play. It wasn’t amazing world-building as some things were just not described. For example, I could not easily visualize where Greg was when he was in the Underground. However, this is a middle-grade book. Most of these books contain little to no description of what isn’t action. I wasn’t drawn out of the book or bored, so this didn’t affect the quality of the book. However, if you are into heavy scenic worldbuilding, this might not be the story for you. If you are here for the building of the history of the world, this book will not disappoint you. You will receive knowledge of Dwarven history, just as Greg learns it from the adults in the Underground. I found this method of storytelling to draw me into the story better than Greg just stumbling upon random tidbits and facts because it gave the Dwarven community more of a family feel.
I won’t spoil anything, but I have to say that I was shocked when Elves were included in the story. It felt like everything changed, and I could relate it to things currently going on in the world that Middle-Grade readers might be exposed to.
The plot of this story is not slow by any means, but I did feel myself becoming connected with Greg and everyone he encountered along his journey. This is not a simple book just for middle schoolers, I found myself enjoying it as a mostly YA/NA reader!
This book did not have any editing or formatting errors that I noticed even though I was reading an advance version. I would assume that your current copies will also be as spotless as mine!
Get ready to be sucked into a world full of Dwarves, magic, Elves, and other creatures in Rylander’s new story: The Legend of Greg!

If you love Rick Riordan books then you will love this book!! This book was a perfect book for me to read and get some good laughs!!

This book took me awhile to get through for a lot of reasons. It had a very strong beginning and I thought I was going to love it! But as I kept reading it kind of died on me.... the pacing was really really off and then I felt like I was reading 3 different books because of the tone and writing seemed to keep shifting. It was sort of disorienting... and I also don't think he knows the first thing about teens being angry with each other... it's very obvious in one of the last fight scenes....
There were definitely some things I loved. But overall it was a tad on the disappointing side for me.

Sieht das Cover nicht genial aus? Also mir gefällt es richtig gut, es macht einfach auf den ersten Blick deutlich, dass man es hier mit einer abenteuerlichen, actionreichen und fantasievollen Geschichte zu tun bekommen wird. Ich bin ja eigentlich nicht so der große Fantasyleser, aber hier sprach mich einfach alles sofort an. Das Buch musste ich einfach bei mir einziehen lassen, ich war schon so gespannt, was mich in „Die Legende von Greg“ wohl erwarten wird!
Greg dachte immer, dass er ein ganz normaler Junge wäre. Langweilig, pummelig, etwas verfressen und ziemlich uncool. Als sein Vater aber von einem furchtbaren Bergtroll entführt wird, erfährt Greg, was er in Wirklichkeit ist. Greg ist ein Zwerg und stammt von einem uralten Zwergenvolk ab. Und nicht nur das: Sein bester Freund Edwin ist ein Elf! Gregs Leben wird ab dem Moment völlig auf den Kopf gestellt werden. Er wird in den Untergrund Chicagos reisen, wo die Zwerge leben. Er wird erfahren, dass Zwerge und Elfen sich hassen und sogar ein Krieg zwischen den verfeindeten Völkern droht. Auf Greg wartet ein großes Abenteuer: Die Zwergenausbildung, die sprechende Axt Aderlass, die große Frage, ob er überhaupt noch mit Edwin befreundet sein kann (er ist schließlich ein Elf) und dann wäre da natürlich noch sein Vater. Wird es Greg gelingen, seinen Vater wiederzufinden?
Ich wusste hier schon nach den ersten Seiten, dass mir das Buch genau das bescheren würde, was ich mir erhofft hatte: Eine fesselnde und ziemlich abgedrehte Story voller Action, Abenteuer, Witz und Charme. Schon das erste Kapitel hat mich so mitgerissen und bestens unterhalten – ich wollte das Buch am liebsten gar nicht mehr aus der Hand legen. Ich habe es dann auch einfach erst einmal nicht getan und über 100 Seiten in einem Rutsch gelesen. Schon auf diesen passiert eine Menge und auch auf den weiteren Seiten geht es durchweg temporeich und spannend zu.
Das Buch liest sich zudem dank des humorvollen, jugendlichen und locker-leichten Schreibstils von Chris Rylander echt klasse. Hinzu kommt, dass die Kapitel eine perfekte Länge haben, was mich sehr gefreut hat. Ich bin überhaupt kein Fan von langen Kapiteln.
Was mir ganz besonders gut gefallen hat, ist der Humor. Dieser war auf jeden Fall absolut meiner, meine Gesichtsmuskeln waren hier äußerst aktiv. Zu Beginn zwar etwas mehr, aber auch im Verlaufe des Buch gab es für mich ständig Gründe zum Schmunzeln und Grinsen.
Mit am besten unterhalten hat mich der liebe Greg, aus dessen Sicht wir hier alles in der Ich-Perspektive erfahren. Greg ist einfach spitze, ich fand ihn so klasse! Er ist super witzig und so sympathisch. Das Komische ist nur, dass Greg irgendwie kaum jemand leiden kann. An seiner Schule ist er der totale Außenseiter und wird von einigen sogar ziemlich übel gehänselt. Zum Glück hat Greg aber in Edwin einen tollen besten Freund gefunden, der ihn vor den Mobbingattacken seiner Mitschüler beschützt. Edwin ist, im Gegensatz zu Greg, sehr beliebt in der Schule, schert sich aber überhaupt nicht darum, was die anderen von ihm denken, wenn er sich mit dem pummeligen und manchmal sehr merkwürdig riechenden Greg abgibt.
Greg ist eben einfach anders. Er wird auch noch erfahren, wie anders er wirklich ist. Dass seine Familie irgendwie nicht normal ist, wusste Greg schon immer. Ist ja schon sehr seltsam, dass allen in der Familie Belmont seit Urzeiten an Donnerstagen schlimme Dinge passieren, oder? Ein Donnerstag, an dem etwas Gutes geschieht und man mal so richtig Glück hat? Ein Ding der Unmöglichkeit in Gregs Familie.
Neben diesen verfluchten Donnerstagen, wäre da dann noch Gregs Vater, der schon etwas strange drauf ist. Er hegt eine große Liebe für Tees und Naturprodukte, die er selbst herstellt und in seinem Laden verkauft. Ich kann euch ja schon mal verraten, dass die Teesorten sehr...ähm, gewöhnungsbedürftig sind. Also mein Fall wären sie ganz sicher nicht. :D
Die Bioseifen von Gregs Dad übrigens auch nicht. Wer will bitte schön nach einer Mischung aus gepökeltem Schweinefleisch und isländischem Moor riechen? Also ich irgendwie nicht. ;)
Greg benutzt die Seifen seines Dads aber, daher riecht er eben manchmal etwas komisch. Für manche Jugendliche ein gefundenes Fressen für Sticheleien und Beleidigungen. Mir tat Greg richtig leid. Er ist so ein prima Kerl, aber dennoch ist er total unbeliebt an seiner Schule.
Als sein Vater entführt wird und Greg erfährt, dass er in Wahrheit ein Zwerg ist, wird sich sein Leben allerdings schlagartig ändern. Mit ihm zusammen werden wir in die Zwergenwelt unter Chicago reisen und ein phantastisches und magisches Abenteuer erleben.
Die Zwergenwelt wird großartig beschrieben. Pures Kopfkino sag ich euch. Ich konnte mir dank der anschaulichen Beschreibungen des Autors von allem ein ganz genaues Bild machen und wurde von der Atmosphäre, die durch das atemberaubende Setting entsteht, komplett verzaubert.
Total klasse fand ich auch die Darstellungen der Zwerge. Hach, manche sind so herrlich schrullig. Wie oben bereits erwähnt, in diesem Buch herrschte bei mir immer wieder ein großer Schmunzelalarm.
Allein schon die Kapitelüberschriften sind teilweise so lustig! Wenn man die liest, kann man es wirklich gar nicht mehr abwarten, sich auf die jeweiligen Kapitel zu stürzen, da man unbedingt wissen möchte, was diese skurrile Formulierungen wohl zu bedeuten haben.
Was genau Greg alles in seinem neuen Leben als Zwerg erleben wird und ob er seinen Vater finden wird, werde ich hier natürlich nicht verraten. Auch, was es mit dem magischen Trank Galdervatn und der mächtigen Axt Aderlass auf sich hat, werde ich nicht erzählen. Und ob Greg weiterhin mit Edwin befreundet sein kann, obwohl dieser ein Elf ist, nun, auch darüber werde ich hier schweigen. Wenn ihr auf all das gerne Antworten haben möchtet, müsst ihr das Buch schon selber lesen. Ich kann es wirklich sehr empfehlen. Wer gerne Fantasybücher liest, die humorvoll, warmherzig, urkomisch und absolut fesselnd sind, der wird von „Die Legende von Greg“ ganz bestimmt begeistert sein.
Vom Verlag wird dieser schöne Reihenauftakt vor allem Percy Jackson-Fans empfohlen und dieser Empfehlung schließe ich mich gerne an. Ich bin mich ziemlich sicher: Wer Percy liebt, der wird auch Greg lieben. Ich jedenfalls tue es. :D

Und nicht nur das: Sein bester Freund Edwin ist ein Elf! Gregs Leben wird ab dem Moment völlig auf den Kopf gestellt werden. Er wird in den Untergrund Chicagos reisen, wo die Zwerge leben. Er wird erfahren, dass Zwerge und Elfen sich hassen und sogar ein Krieg zwischen den verfeindeten Völkern droht. Auf Greg wartet ein großes Abenteuer: Die Zwergenausbildung, die sprechende Axt Aderlass, die große Frage, ob er überhaupt noch mit Edwin befreundet sein kann (er ist schließlich ein Elf) und dann wäre da natürlich noch sein Vater. Wird es Greg gelingen, seinen Vater wiederzufinden?
Ich wusste hier schon nach den ersten Seiten, dass mir das Buch genau das bescheren würde, was ich mir erhofft hatte: Eine fesselnde und ziemlich abgedrehte Story voller Action, Abenteuer, Witz und Charme. Schon das erste Kapitel hat mich so mitgerissen und bestens unterhalten – ich wollte das Buch am liebsten gar nicht mehr aus der Hand legen. Ich habe es dann auch einfach erst einmal nicht getan und über 100 Seiten in einem Rutsch gelesen. Schon auf diesen passiert eine Menge und auch auf den weiteren Seiten geht es durchweg temporeich und spannend zu.
Das Buch liest sich zudem dank des humorvollen, jugendlichen und locker-leichten Schreibstils von Chris Rylander echt klasse. Hinzu kommt, dass die Kapitel eine perfekte Länge haben, was mich sehr gefreut hat. Ich bin überhaupt kein Fan von langen Kapiteln.
Was mir ganz besonders gut gefallen hat, ist der Humor. Dieser war auf jeden Fall absolut meiner, meine Gesichtsmuskeln waren hier äußerst aktiv. Zu Beginn zwar etwas mehr, aber auch im Verlaufe des Buch gab es für mich ständig Gründe zum Schmunzeln und Grinsen.
Mit am besten unterhalten hat mich der liebe Greg, aus dessen Sicht wir hier alles in der Ich-Perspektive erfahren. Greg ist einfach spitze, ich fand ihn so klasse! Er ist super witzig und so sympathisch. Das Komische ist nur, dass Greg irgendwie kaum jemand leiden kann. An seiner Schule ist er der totale Außenseiter und wird von einigen sogar ziemlich übel gehänselt. Zum Glück hat Greg aber in Edwin einen tollen besten Freund gefunden, der ihn vor den Mobbingattacken seiner Mitschüler beschützt. Edwin ist, im Gegensatz zu Greg, sehr beliebt in der Schule, schert sich aber überhaupt nicht darum, was die anderen von ihm denken, wenn er sich mit dem pummeligen und manchmal sehr merkwürdig riechenden Greg abgibt.
Greg ist eben einfach anders. Er wird auch noch erfahren, wie anders er wirklich ist. Dass seine Familie irgendwie nicht normal ist, wusste Greg schon immer. Ist ja schon sehr seltsam, dass allen in der Familie Belmont seit Urzeiten an Donnerstagen schlimme Dinge passieren, oder? Ein Donnerstag, an dem etwas Gutes geschieht und man mal so richtig Glück hat? Ein Ding der Unmöglichkeit in Gregs Familie.
Neben diesen verfluchten Donnerstagen, wäre da dann noch Gregs Vater, der schon etwas strange drauf ist. Er hegt eine große Liebe für Tees und Naturprodukte, die er selbst herstellt und in seinem Laden verkauft. Ich kann euch ja schon mal verraten, dass die Teesorten sehr...ähm, gewöhnungsbedürftig sind. Also mein Fall wären sie ganz sicher nicht. :D
Die Bioseifen von Gregs Dad übrigens auch nicht. Wer will bitte schön nach einer Mischung aus gepökeltem Schweinefleisch und isländischem Moor riechen? Also ich irgendwie nicht. ;)
Greg benutzt die Seifen seines Dads aber, daher riecht er eben manchmal etwas komisch. Für manche Jugendliche ein gefundenes Fressen für Sticheleien und Beleidigungen. Mir tat Greg richtig leid. Er ist so ein prima Kerl, aber dennoch ist er total unbeliebt an seiner Schule.
Als sein Vater entführt wird und Greg erfährt, dass er in Wahrheit ein Zwerg ist, wird sich sein Leben allerdings schlagartig ändern. Mit ihm zusammen werden wir in die Zwergenwelt unter Chicago reisen und ein phantastisches und magisches Abenteuer erleben.
Die Zwergenwelt wird großartig beschrieben. Pures Kopfkino sag ich euch. Ich konnte mir dank der anschaulichen Beschreibungen des Autors von allem ein ganz genaues Bild machen und wurde von der Atmosphäre, die durch das atemberaubende Setting entsteht, komplett verzaubert.
Total klasse fand ich auch die Darstellungen der Zwerge. Hach, manche sind so herrlich schrullig. Wie oben bereits erwähnt, in diesem Buch herrschte bei mir immer wieder ein großer Schmunzelalarm.
Allein schon die Kapitelüberschriften sind teilweise so lustig! Wenn man die liest, kann man es wirklich gar nicht mehr abwarten, sich auf die jeweiligen Kapitel zu stürzen, da man unbedingt wissen möchte, was diese skurrile Formulierungen wohl zu bedeuten haben.
Was genau Greg alles in seinem neuen Leben als Zwerg erleben wird und ob er seinen Vater finden wird, werde ich hier natürlich nicht verraten. Auch, was es mit dem magischen Trank Galdervatn und der mächtigen Axt Aderlass auf sich hat, werde ich nicht erzählen. Und ob Greg weiterhin mit Edwin befreundet sein kann, obwohl dieser ein Elf ist, nun, auch darüber werde ich hier schweigen. Wenn ihr auf all das gerne Antworten haben möchtet, müsst ihr das Buch schon selber lesen. Ich kann es wirklich sehr empfehlen. Wer gerne Fantasybücher liest, die humorvoll, warmherzig, urkomisch und absolut fesselnd sind, der wird von „Die Legende von Greg“ ganz bestimmt begeistert sein.
Vom Verlag wird dieser schöne Reihenauftakt vor allem Percy Jackson-Fans empfohlen und dieser Empfehlung schließe ich mich gerne an. Ich bin mich ziemlich sicher: Wer Percy liebt, der wird auch Greg lieben. Ich jedenfalls tue es. :D
Fazit: Ein toller Reihenauftakt, der einen durchweg mitfiebern lässt und große Lust auf mehr macht! Mich hat der erste Band von „Die Legende von Greg“ bestens unterhalten. Das Buch handelt von Freundschaft, Mut, Zusammenhalt und Vertrauen, von magischen Wesen, Geheimnissen und jeder Menge Abenteuer und Gefahren. Die Story ist durchweg spannend und rasant und so herrlich humorvoll und schräg. Ich kann dieses zwergisch coole Buch wärmstens empfehlen und vergebe 5 von 5 Sternen!

I loved this book but there were some issues with it. The humor didn't make that much sense to me; I felt like the storyline was a bit off, but overall, it was a great read. I would definitely recommend this book to people who love fantasy and love to read about stuff like elves and trolls.

Greg es un niño normal. Bueno, casi.
Su familia tiene una suerte de maldición que hace que todos los jueves puedan sucuderle cosas terribles. Asiste a uno de los colegios más caros de su ciudad gracias a una beca. En el cole casi todos se meten con él a excepción de su buen amigo Edwin. Después del cole suele ayudar en la tienda de su padre. Y todo parece ser de lo más normal... hasta que un día un troll entra y destroza la tienda de su padre, descubrirá que es un enano y que una guerra está a punto de comenzar.
Con este punto de partida tan flipante nos introducimos en La leyenda de Greg, un libro middle grade con muchos toques de humor en el que no faltan un gran cantidad de elementos fantásticos y un buen puñado de reflexiones positivas para los más jóvenes.
Y es que en este libro vamos a encontrar criaturas como enanos, elfos, duendes, trolls... todos ellos conviviendo con los humanos (que no sospechan siquiera de su existencia). Encontraremos también magia embotellada y armas ancestrales que buscan venganza y hablan con su elegido. Todo ello en un a historia estructurada en capítulos cortos, con una ambientación bastante conseguida y con un ritmo muy ágil que, con sus buenas dosis de humor, te harán devorar el libro.
Me ha encantado que a lo largo de todo el libro hay guiños a otras obras de fantasía épica como El señor de los Anillos (con la alusión, por ejemplo, al odio ancestral de elfos y enanos). La parte que se desarrolla en la guarida de los enanos me ha gustado mucho ya que ahí vemos la gran diversidad de enanos que existe, su organización social y el día a día de su sociedad.
Comentar que le he quitado un poco de nota por el final que, para mí, el autor deja demasiado abierto y con muchas incógnitas por resolver.
En definitiva, un libro que puede disfrutar un público de cualquier edad, con un buen ritmo, momentos de humor bastante logrados y una trama interesante que hará vivir al lector una divertida aventura.

This was a truly hilarious riot from beginning to end! I love Greg, and Edwin his Best Friend. The magic, the lore of dwarves and elves.. and the world returning to An age of magic! It was sooooo good I can’t wait for more adventures! This would be an awesome book for middle schoolers I’m not sure my boys would understand the humor (they are 8 and 4) my eldest maybe. I love that the dwarves as a people are prone to failing and they have to get over it in order to survive, in reality it’s a great underlying message inbetween all the funny stuff that happens mostly on Thursdays.. Never give up, and you never know what lies beyond the next bend in the road. Or peace vs violence. I just have so many good things to say about this book it is a win win read enjoyable at any age!

I've decided to start reviewing with a little bit more detail and organization, so here's the first trial!
Plot: Greg Belmont has spent his entire life with his dad, Trevor, and the Belmont family curse of bad luck that only seemed to strike on Thursdays. What starts with a freak polar bear attacking Greg at the zoo turns into his father's shop being destroyed and henceforth his father being kidnapped. By an Elf and a Troll. As Greg comes to know that he is, in fact, a Dwarf, he finds himself tangled up in an ancient war between Dwarves and Elves that has been building for centuries, ever since the many magical species of the world decided to give up magic. Greg finds himself among like-minded people, and possibly his first true friends, as he tries to navigate this new world and find his dad before it's too late!
Characters: Greg Belmont was a perfect main character. He was funny, he was insecure, he was flabbergasted when people wanted to be his friend; more or less, he felt like a real enough character despite being surrounded by so much magic and shenanigans. His best friend, Edwin, was also written really well. Both boys crashed through stereotypes and I found it cool to read as an adult, knowing that it would be great for younger people to read this and see that it's okay to have layers and different hobbies that other people may not think is "cool" or whatever. The other Dwarf kids Greg meets sort of blended together for me. The only ones that stood out to me were Ari--purple haired blacksmith YES!--and Glam. Lake spoke like he belonged in a Shakespearean play but that's all I remember of him. Hopefully in the sequel, these characters will be explored a bit more. I'm excited to see how Greg grows throughout the series (?? I'm assuming it will be a series) since he did grow a lot during this single book!
Writing Style: Being a middle grade book, it was funny. It had long, hilarious chapter titles, peak humor through the pages, and just the right amount of ridiculous plot twists to keep you interested. But it also had heart and the core theme was family. It was written in first person, so as Greg learned about magic and Dwarves and Elves and such, so did the reader. Some parts I felt were lacking in description--namely the magic used in the book--but it was still enjoyable and really quick to read. It ended on a cliffhanger, and a lot of loose ends, so I expect that I may read the sequel when it comes out so I can see what happens!

Olen etsinyt kauan tolkienilaisesta kääpiökäsityksestä irtisanoutuvaa kirjaa. Gregin legenda yllätti, ilahdutti ja lopulta vähän väsytti olemassaolollaan. Vaikka kirja kuinka pyristelee irti Tolkienin kääpiöistä, tuntuu kääpiö yhä rakentuvan lyhyeksi, sitkeäksi, itkemättömäksi ja käsityötaitoiseksi olennoksi, joka viihtyy luolissa ja ihailee kunnon partoja ja pitopöytiä. Hyvä yritys, mutta menkää pidemmälle!
Varhaisnuortenromaanina Gregin legenda oli viihdyttävä, vaikken sen huumorista välittänytkään. Erityisesti henkilöhahmoja oli ilo seurata. Gregin ystävistä löytyi samastumisen kohde vaikka kenelle - myös tällaiselle lihaa karttavalle kääpiöintoilijalle. Lisäpisteitä kuittailusta fantasiaklassikoille ja sukupuolineutraalista partojen ihailusta! Lisää partoja kaikille!

Ho trovato questo libro nella mia Owlcrate di Luglio e ho finito di leggerlo in questi giorni.
"The legend of Greg", libro middle grade che mi prometteva tante risate, non è stato molto all'altezza delle mie aspettative.
Io solitamente amo e vennero i libri per bambini, ma solo quando riesco a coniugare l'avventura ad un ottimo stile di scrittura e cattivi come si deve (per esempio la serie di sfortunati eventi, ovviamente 😂 esempio della vita).
Questo romanzo invece ha una bella ironia adatta ai più piccoli, ma uno stile che non mi ha fatta impazzire per niente. Più o meno a metà lettura ho perso interesse nelle avventure di Greg e questo assolutamente non è positivo.
Con questa recensione non sto dicendo che il libro è brutto, solo che non è adatto a me, ragazza di ventidue anni con gusti particolari 😂.

Greg was an ordinary guy, with one friend, and a father who was pretty cool. So what if his family history was filled with bad luck, the curse only strikes on Thursday. The rest of the week is usually normal. Well, there was the bear at the zoo trying to attack him. Then his dad was attacked and kidnapped by this ugly looking guy.
Then he found out he was a Dwarf, a real Dwarf, is introduced to the Dwarf colony beneath Chicago. Just a normal day...NOT.
I enjoyed this book, and the characters, and the concept. I won this book, and all opinions are mine alone.

What a find!! I’m looking for a book for my grandson (8) and I’ve found it!! I’m thrilled that this is a series.
My son (his dad) is named Greg so this caught my eye. No other reason. BUT - it’s great. Lots of fun!!! I’m looking forward to reading more. Meanwhile - off this goes as a gift. 😁 It’s marketed as middle grade.

I read the Legend Of Greg. I loved how it takes place in Chicago. However, the characters seemed flat and lacked depth. I never felt an interest in knowing what happened next. Emoji feeling: 😐

Greg Belmont es un chico al que no le gustan los riesgos, vive contento siendo un joven normal. Greg tiene un amigo –sí, tan solo un amigo- en su divertida escuela y un padre que es de lo más cool (incluso cuando está obsesionado con jabones orgánicos que apestan a una mezcla entre cerdo cocinado y pantano islandés).
El problema es que Greg no es un chico normal… él es un enano fantástico!
Greg descubrió la verdad el día que su padre trajo a casa un asqueroso té –que despertó nuevas y bizarras habilidades en él. Al poco tiempo, un Troll asesino secuestró a su padre y Greg fue llevado a las lejanías de un mundo subterráneo, donde los Enanos han vivido durante siglos, justo debajo de las calles de Chicago.
Con la ayuda de unos nuevos e increíbles amigos y de un hacha que habla, Greg aprenderá la historia de los Enanos, quienes han sido señalados a través de leyendas épicas desde el inicio de los tiempos. Sin embargo, el regreso de la magia que una vez ejercieron, traerá de la mano grandes peligros que afrontar, sobre todo, la batalla contra los Elfos, los grandes enemigos de los Enanos.
Opinión:
En un principio, pensé que iba a resultarme tan divertido como Percy Jackson, ya que tenía un aire similar, el humor, personajes ingeniosos, diálogos divertidos. Y en gran medida fue así, es una historia bastante graciosa, por momentos enternecedora, con mucha acción y cargada de magia y mitología. Pero no me enganchó lo suficiente para lograr que lo leyera con ganas. Tardé casi un mes en leer este libro, ya que leía unas 20 páginas y me vencía el sueño.
El estilo de escritura es bastante sencillo, lo que no es malo, teniendo en cuenta que la novela está orientada a un público infantil/juvenil (middle grade), y la traducción está bien lograda, ya que el autor usa muchos juegos de palabras como chistes, y lograron transmitir eso al español. Greg y los otros chicos enanos me resultaron bastante simpáticos, surge entre ellos una amistad muy pura e inocente, elemento que me encanta encontrar en este tipo de historias.
Sopesando los pros y los contra, me gustó, pero no se suma a mis favoritos.
El problema es que Greg no es un chico normal… él es un enano fantástico!

Opinión:
En un principio, pensé que iba a resultarme tan divertido como Percy Jackson, ya que tenía un aire similar, el humor, personajes ingeniosos, diálogos divertidos. Y en gran medida fue así, es una historia bastante graciosa, por momentos enternecedora, con mucha acción y cargada de magia y mitología. Pero no me enganchó lo suficiente para lograr que lo leyera con ganas. Tardé casi un mes en leer este libro, ya que leía unas 20 páginas y me vencía el sueño.
El estilo de escritura es bastante sencillo, lo que no es malo, teniendo en cuenta que la novela está orientada a un público infantil/juvenil (middle grade), y la traducción está bien lograda, ya que el autor usa muchos juegos de palabras como chistes, y lograron transmitir eso al español. Greg y los otros chicos enanos me resultaron bastante simpáticos, surge entre ellos una amistad muy pura e inocente, elemento que me encanta encontrar en este tipo de historias.
Sopesando los pros y los contra, me gustó, pero no se suma a mis favoritos.

Nothing like picking up a book and finding, on the first page, a warning to NOT read this book if it's a Thursday...and realizing it actually IS a Thursday...yep. That's what happened. But I'm notorious for ignoring instructions, so I read it anyway. Luckily, nothing disastrous happened. And it was a very pleasant little read.
This is a great middle-grade novel, with content and adventure level completely appropriate. I enjoyed the uniqueness of the story, as it took a very enjoyable turn from the traditional fantasy novel. My only gripe is with what happened to the friendship. It was deeply saddening to me. However, this is the start of a series, so I'm hoping all will be better by the end. Speaking of ends, this one was certainly open-ended, but not a cliffhanger, so that's spectacular. I'm looking forward to the next one.

This hilarious story about two best friends, Greg and Edwin is a hoot. When Greg finds out he’s really a Dwarf and his best bud is an Elf their relationship changes as the two groups were traditionally enemies. . Lots of exciting action with Greg’s new magic axe enlivens the story. Flawed by the somewhat preachy insistence that all groups can get along and the somewhat depressing ending which is undoubtedly a set up for more books.

Puh, diese Rezension ist nicht so leicht.
Die Geschichte fing für mich sehr vielversprechend an. Der Schreibstil (und das Cover, welches ich übrigens super finde, nur Greg könnte dicklicher sein) erinnerte mich stark an Rick Riordan.
Ich liebe die Bücher von Riordan!
Und zu Beginn war ich auch mit Greg völlig zufrieden.
Greg selbst war mir sympathisch. Aber ich mochte vor allem auf Anhieb seinen besten Freund Edwin und diese wundervolle Freundschaft der Beiden.
Doch als die Handlung so richtig in Fahrt kam, war ich leider so gar nicht mehr mit von der Partie.
Mir sind die Zwerge unsympathisch und auch die Entwicklung von Greg sagt mir nicht sonderlich zu.
Im Allgemeinen sind mir die meisten Zwerge zu pessimistisch, zu feige, zu empathielos.
Und dann gibt es da noch die oberste Zwergenregel: Zwerge weinen nicht. Selbst dann gilt es als verpönt, wenn z.B. gerade der Vater gestorben ist. Ich mag diese Botschaft nicht, könnte aber drüber hinweg sehen, wenn für mich der Rest passen würde.
Der Autor schreibt in seiner Danksagung, dass er sich bei "Fleisch" bedanke und sein Dank nicht "Seitan" gilt. Dass ich finde, dass diese "Fleisch ist mein Gemüse" Einstellung nicht mehr zeitgemäß ist, ist eine persönliche Sache, die ich nicht in die Bewertung einfließen lassen möchte. Ich habe es mehr oder weniger akzeptiert, dass die Zwerge pausenlos Fleisch essen, Tiere hassen und diese nur als Nahrung ansehen. Trotz allem, habe ich bei Spitzen gegen Vegetarier den Autor, dank seiner Danksagung, vor Augen gehabt, wie er gerade gegen die nicht Fleischesser wettert. Für mich war vieles schlichtweg provokant und hatte etwas von einem kleinem Jungen, der gerade mit einem Steak vor der Nase eines Vegetariers herumwedelt. (Ohne die Danksagung des Autors, wäre mir das Ganze nicht so sauer aufgestoßen)
Jetzt aber weiter zu Greg und seiner Entwicklung. Greg wächst über sich hinaus und scheint einer der wenigen mutigen Zwerge zu sein. Was vermutlich daran liegt, dass er seinen Vater retten möchte und nicht so "zwergisch" aufgewachsen ist.
Mir ist er aber auch zu beeinflussbar. Natürlich sind Teenager meist beeinflussbar. Aber Edwin ist, bis er von den anderen Zwergen erfahren hat, eine Konstante in seinem Leben gewesen. Die aufkeimenden Zweifel an Edwin, weil dieser ein Elf ist, haben mich negativ gestimmt. Ob er seinen Zweifeln nachgibt werde ich nun natürlich nicht weiter fortführen.
Edwin ist mein liebster Charakter in diesem Buch. Er ist loyal, lustig und recht frei von Vorurteilen. Ihm ist es egal, dass Greg ein Zwerg ist. Es ist ihm ebenfalls egal, dass Greg dicklich und unbeliebt ist.
Die weiteren Charaktere waren für mich leider nicht so richtig greifbar. Einzig Ari und Froggy hatten für mich durchaus Potential.
Die Grundidee der Geschichte ist für mich durchaus interessant. Die ersten circa 100 Seiten war ich auch mit relativer Begeisterung dabei.
Ich habe viel gelacht und der Schreibstil hat mich tatsächlich an Riordans erinnert. Jedoch wurde es mir mehr und mehr zu gewollt. Ich lachte weniger und auch die Handlung konnte mich nicht mehr ganz packen.
Trotz allem ist es ein lustiges Buch, an dem vielleicht gerade jüngere Leser ihre Freude haben. Prinzipiell bin ich ein großer Freund von Jugend- und Kinderbüchern, aber nicht jedes Buch kann einen vom Hocker hauen.
Vielleicht waren meine Erwartungen zu groß. Aber ich habe jetzt das große Bedürfnis noch einmal in die Welt von Percy Jackson einzutauchen.
Es kann natürlich sein, dass die nächsten Teile viele Sachen, die mich im ersten Teil gestört haben, vom Autor gewollt sind, um Spannung aufzubauen. Ich bin durchaus neugierig, wie sich die Charaktere weiter entwickeln werden und natürlich auch auf den Verlauf der Geschichte. Trotzdem bin ich noch nicht sicher, ob ich die Reihe weiter verfolgen werde.

I have to admit, the title was what made me check this book out. I saw it and thought, oh my gosh, it’s me!

It made me laugh out loud. It was, as it happens, a Thursday I checked this out from the library…I put the book down and picked it up again on Friday.
Greg is a misfit scholarship kid at Isaacson Prepatory Empowerment Establishment (IPEE; that made me giggle as well) where his only friend is the rich, popular Edwin Aldaron. When Greg’s father is kidnapped, Greg learns that he is actually a Dwarf, and is thrown into a magical world he’s never known, but needs to learn if he wants to rescue his father.
The friendship between Greg and Edwin is wonderful and reminds me of the earliest seasons of Smallville—the amazing friendship that developed between Clark Kent and Lex Luthor. Greg is a down-to-earth, normal boy and his best friend Edwin is rich, good-looking, and his parents are extremely influential; they shouldn’t be best friends, but they are, and they go to bat for each other even though the friendship experiences tension when Greg learns the truth about himself and the magical Separate Earth.

This book deals with themes of racism and sexism extremely well for a younger audience. It’s mostly subtle, but the author is also not afraid to slap you in the face with it once in a while.
“Changing your name upon finding a life partner is such a vulgar, unsophisticated tradition. Dwarven women actually have honor and self-respect in who they are.”
The magic system for Dwarves is simple, fun, and interesting. It reminds me of Poison Ivy from the Batman series.
Water began pouring out of the walkie-talkie’s seams…a dozen thick green vines came slithering out of my open locker and wrapped themselves around Mr. Phiro’s legs.
The story is fast paced with short, digestible chapters perfect for its middle-grade audience, but I thoroughly enjoyed this read as well. If you like the magical school friends of Harry Potter or the crazed supervillains of the Batman franchise, you’ll love this funny, heartwarming story.
