Dani Ford, a detective in the SCPD, knows this all too well. The murder rate is the highest in the country, and though it isn’t quite as bad as, say, El Salvador, it certainly gives Mexico a run for its money.
Immigration has been a big issue in America lately – but you can be damned sure nobody’s immigrating to Shadow City. If you sent them an invitation, they’d hop back over that fence so fast, the authorities working the border would pull them out a chair and fix them tea and cookies.
Murder, robbery, rape. This is all really bad stuff, no doubt – but for Dani, it’s the norm. What’s not normal is being sent to a local nightclub called Bloody Teeth to investigate a kidnapping case, and then getting attacked by a woman with fangs. And then – to add a creepy cherry to the top of the sinister sundae – being defended by another woman with fangs.
What the hell is going on in this damned city? Dani is determined to find out. She’s never believed in vampires. She’s never believed in magic. Her parents died in a car accident when she was sixteen, and from then on out it was nothing but the hardcore real world. But now . . .
She’s seriously crushing on Risa, the woman who saved her from being mauled at Bloody Teeth. They’ve shared a strange connection ever since. As it turns out, Risa – who doesn’t like Edward Cullen all that much but seems to be his charming female vampire counterpart just the same – left her “mark” on Dani, an invisible brand that recognizes them as soulmates. But Risa’s world is perilous, even more so than the one Dani’s used to, and Dani has to decide if she wants to take the risk.
All she knows is that she’s been marked, and it will change her life forever . . .
This is the first book in the Shadow City series. Follow me for updates on new releases.
Dani is in her thirties and is on the police force of Shadow City. It's a very rough city. She is checking out the Bloody Teeth nightclub and finds out there is some kind of thing going on where girls/women are being kidnapped. There's also a girl around 12 or 13 who she finds murdered.
Then there's Risa, the owner of said nightclub. Risa says she's 'marked' Dani and before long we find out Risa is a vampire. Vampire politics comes into play, there's a really nasty female vampire who wants Risa dead and Dani finds herself among other vampires, in a vampire war (basically) and trying at the same time to deal with her attraction to Risa.
It's a neat story with interesting characters. My only criticism is that the vampires with Dani allow themselves to get high and drunk when it would be more logical to spend that time preparing in every way possible for a probable attack by the vampire that wants Risa and Dani dead.
A scary and an adventure novel, you will be surprised. The characters inrapture you into their beings. Dani, a badass dectitive in a city where crime abounds. Her only love is her job, kicking butt and taking names. She thinks she knows the underworld, but there is another level of underworld that is even deadlier. Follow her journey as she falls deeper. I will have to pick up #2.
A really smoking start to a great series. I can't wait for the next installment. The characters were smashing good . with really cool world building, this series has all the marking of a fantastic tale. Highly recommended.
This was really, really, really, really epic and I do truly mean every positive word about reading Marked! The world-building here is awesome and I love the characters as if I'm walking in the universe set-up in this and ready to read the follow-up!
Another great C.M. Blackwood story and you'll outta be reading this ASAP!
Soft worldbuilding Steaming romance Relatable first person narration Not really any profound motifs/lessons learned Easy to understand All characters besides the protagonist are static, but their personalities are strong and fresh
