He dreams of a 24/7 relationship with her, but all she has to give is a one-night stand.

Paula Stone is a decorated officer in the Kansas City Police Department. Succeeding in the testosterone-filled environment means everything to her. She married young, to a fellow police academy recruit, but has been divorced for several years because he couldn’t handle her success. Her marriage led her to prefer brief encounters to satisfy her physical needs and she’s decided she’ll never date another cop.

Jim Cagney is one of the youngest detectives in the Drug Interdiction Unit. After five years in the military and two tours in Iraq, he’s been back in Kansas City for six years. During his recovery from the horrors of the war, he discovered the beauty of dominance and submission. Living in a 24/7 TPE relationship gave him back the control he lost on the battlefield. It’s been almost a year since he uncollared his submissive, and he’s ready to move on.

As Paula gets to know Jim more and more, she starts to appreciate both him and the pleasures he gives. Will she ever be able to fully submit to the kind of lifestyle he represents, though?

Publisher's Note: This steamy contemporary romance contains elements of power exchange. While it is part of the Club Indigo series, it can be read and enjoyed as a standalone.

Karen Nappa is an Amazon bestselling author of Seasoned BDSM romance with HEA. Her books are available at the popular retailers and include series such as the Club Indigo series and The Quinn Quartet.

Immersed in the D/s lifestyle herself, she writes realistic albeit romantic stories. When not dominated by her cats or her Master (in that order—even if it earns her a spanking!), she loves going places to discover the stories waiting to be written.

She resides in the Netherlands with her dominant husband, two adult-ish sons—and whoever they might drag home with them—and, of course, her two Chausie cats. If she isn’t writing or texting with friends, she’s probably reading, running, or listening to heavy metal.

APPRECIATED is the third book in the Club Indigo series and let me tell you, this series just keeps on getting better!

We have met Paula before as she is friends with Laura (from book 1). Even though she knows Laura, she still has a distorted view of what BDSM actually is. Not only that but she has turned down advances from everyone she works with, giving her the nickname of Haagen-Daas. So when she is attending the wedding of the sisters, Laura and Suzie, colleague Jim Cagney is definitely off-limits. Except he isn't and Paula has to sneak out the following morning.

Jim is very patient with Paula but he also makes it clear that he wants her. He deals with her apprehension and misinformation in a way that allows her to speak and then understand. I loved how Josh's story was woven in and the role Paula had to play. What I didn't like so much was the separation near the end. This seemed unnecessary, especially for the amount of time it went on for. I thought communication was key, people!!!

Anyway, this is a fantastic series but you can read this book as a standalone. Previous characters and situations are mentioned but I don't think you "need" to have read the prior books. Of course, I would recommend you do just so you get the most enjoyment out of them.

As far as this one goes, I thoroughly enjoyed every word and have no hesitation in recommending it.

Would you believe this is Karen Nappa’s third story? This club is growing to be one of my favorites, and i want to live there! Sign me up,will you? Please?
The members of this growing family of friends are all great, and i love how they look after eachother.

Paula and Jim both work at the Kansas City police department. She’s divorced, because her ex couldn’t deal with her succes. He uncollared his submissive some time ago,and longs for a woman that can fulfill his dominant needs. Even though Paula is older,he’s wanted her from the moment he saw her. Finding out she’s submissive makes her even more enticing. But Paula has a distorted view on BDSM,as well as an aversion of having an affair with a colleague. After convincing her to at least try the BDSM,Jim hopes it’ll grow into a lasting relationship. But after misunderstandings shortly into their relationship,Paula ends it. Will Jim be able to get her back? Can he convince her to trust him with her heart?

I loved their story, and i loved seeing the others again. And....i loved the fact that Josh gets what he needs,a caring, loving family!
Can’t wait to hear more of Club Indigo! This series is getting better and better, and i love it!

Before I get to my review, I want to warn prospective new readers that it helps to have read all the books in order since characters and their developing storylines appear throughout all three.

Since I've read all of them, I'm going to begin my review with my general reactions before talking about this book, specifically.

What Worked For Me:

1) Consent: The authors, who are in the lifestyle, understand that if there's no consent, there's no BDSM. This is why I wish that authors who write in this genre without consent would stop labeling their work as such. I'm not saying don't write about or read it, if that's your fantasy, but come up with another acronym, because what you're writing about is not kink, but abuse (legally and ethically); moreover, you're impugning a lifestyle that is already so misunderstood. I also appreciated the talk about safewords (I hope RJ Gray reads them).

2) Diversity: Although all the main couples thus far have been white, hetero, abled, and middle-class (I believe some of this will change in the next novel), secondary characters are ethnically diverse, as are their gender and sexual orientations. I also appreciate that there's no gender essentialism within the BDSM spectrum: not all the males are dominant; not all the females are submissive; and several are switches. No other book in this genre that I've read (and I've read several) features this much diversity in their books (or any, really) and it's great to see. I particularly appreciate that the women in these books are older (for this genre, anyway): not only are they not 22, but they're also not all 32.

3) Novelty: In most series, plots and characters become interchangeable (such as Measha Stone's "Owned & Protected" series). Thus far, this is not true here. All the characters have their own unique motivations, backstories, problems, professions, and BDSM interests. Because they do, each story's tensions, conflicts, and sexual practices vary. No one could mistake Suzie for Paula or the sadist Connor for the TPE Jim. I don't know if the authors will be able to sustain this, but I hope they do.

4) World-Building/Community: The authors have set their series in a very specific town with characters who are connected by blood or friendship or profession (maybe a little too much so: it seems like everyone in Kansas City is secretly in the BDSM scene). The characters all come across as real people living in a real world. For my caveat to this, see below.

5) Female Characters: All the women in these books are strong: Paula is a decorated police officer. They have their own jobs, aspirations, wants, needs, and challenges. They may submit to the person they love; they do not submit to the outside world. They are professional, adult women; they are not brats (thank god, because I'd really like to see that trope go away).

6) Sex/Play Scenes: All are well-described, detailed, and different enough not to be boring (it helps that, as I said above, the authors represent myriad BDSM practices, such as fire play and Shibari).

What Didn't Work For Me:

1) Descriptions: The authors simultaneously give us too much information and not enough. To use this book as an example: we hear a lot about what Paula eats or doesn't eat, but I wasn't always sure where she was, particularly early on, when she was undercover: Where exactly did the conversation with the underhanded police officer occur? I would suggest the authors ask themselves if the kinds of detail they provide are necessary and also think about what details are missing.

2) Community: I like the tight-knit community, but in all three books they overwhelm the mc to the point of distraction. In this particular book, we hear a lot about Laura, James, and Josh, and I think their drama would have been better suited to a separate, second book about Laura and James; here, it took the focus away from Paula and Jim. There's a happy medium between a cabin romance (in which we only see the mc) and the "it takes a village" approach that Ms. Nappa has implemented in these books (I know they're two people).

3) Pace: At times, all three books are a little dry and slow-going. I think taking a hard look at what information is needed to provide backstory and move the plot along, and what is not would go a long way to correcting this -- as would not concentrating on so many characters at one time (see above).

Now, to discuss this particular book.

What Worked for Me:

1) I appreciate Paula's strength and that Jim appreciated it.

2) I also liked Jim, who, unlike many H's in this genre, was willing to compromise. He clearly adored her and wanted what was best for her.

3) I liked that Paula was slightly older than Jim (my pet peeve in this world is that men can be 25 years older than their wives (Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones) with no comment, but god forbid that a woman be even slightly older than her male partner).

What Didn't Work for Me:

1) Given that the authors carefully discuss safewords, consent, and mutual fulfillment, I found this statement by Jim very, very odd:

In a regular relationship, the sub doesn't question the Dominant's decisions. She or he understands that the Dom is acting in the sub's best interests. If you ever feel that I'm asking something that will cause you physical or emotional pain, you always have a safe word.

Uh, no. A sub can ALWAYS question the Dom's decisions, even if s/he isn't at the extreme point of physical or emotional pain. They can ask questions if they're confused, if they're unsure, if they're uncomfortable, if they think the Dom is wrong -- whatever. And this is particularly true in this book, where Paula and Jim enter into an M/s relationship without really knowing each other (you have to suspend a lot of disbelief here). What Jim says might be true for a couple who knows each other well and for years. But there's no way that Jim could possibly always act in Paula's best interests because he has no idea what they are. Truthfully, although by and large I thought Jim was a good dom, he did a few things that fall under the "don't try this at home" category. First, what the sub wants help with needs to come from her (I'm going to use "her" and "him" here since we're talking about Paula and Jim). It isn't up to the dominant to decide the sub needs help organizing her house if the sub doesn't view this as a problem. And on a scale of 1-10, a clean house is hardly as earth-shatteringly important as Jim made it out to be. It also bothered me when he wanted to take over her food choices. Food is an emotional minefield -- particularly for women -- and I can only imagine this working out if the couple knows each other really, really well (and even then, there are so many things that can go wrong).

2) Plot Structure: Paula and Jim spend a lot of time apart (another reason why I thought this book dragged in places). In addition, as another reader pointed out, it made no sense that Jim did not . The way that whole scene was handled bothered me a lot. For one thing, even after .

Lastly, in the Harvey Weinstein/Brett Kavanaugh/Me Too Moment, I really appreciated the discussion of sexual harassment at Paula's workplace (even though the authors didn't label it as such, that's what it is).

3 1/2 stars.

Note: I adhere to the ratings system as laid out by Goodreads: 2 stars = it was okay; 3 stars = liked it; 4 stars = really liked it; 5 stars = it was amazing. I gave this book 3 1/2 stars because it drew me in, even though I thought it was dry and slow in places, and I didn't like the fact that the mc spent so much time apart and were not always the center of the action. I do not think that every book I read is "amazing;" further, I think that it cheapens the rating system to always assign 4 or 5 stars. If a book really earns the 4 or 5 stars (and I realize that this is, to some degree, subjective), I'll give them -- but it certainly shouldn't apply to every book. Ymmv, and everyone should enjoy/rate these books as they wish.

This is the third in what is rapidly becoming one of my favorite series, and Appreciated takes us back to Club Indigo, this time with the adorably named Jimmy Cagney as the Dom of the moment. In the acknowledgements, the authors say that there is some Paula in each of them – there’s a lot of Paula in me and her housekeeping issues really spoke to me! In many ways, this book talks the reader through the lifestyle, what it means, what it isn’t, why a contract, the lack of rigidity in types of lifestyle, and all of this is woven into a story that is full of heart and full of heat, and that leaves you in a better space after reading it than you were before. We also get to meet up again with Laura and James, and Connor and Suzie, the couples from books 1 and 2, but in a way that a first-time reader would not feel lost. The blurb has the basics of the story, but this book is so much more than that, and it never disappoints. Some stiltedness in the dialogue has been ironed out too – these books keep getting better and better.

Book three in the Club Indigo series. Can be read and enjoyed as stand-alone, but the secondary characters and storylines are the same throughout the series. I did not read the first two books in the series and I had no trouble following, but there is a large friend group through the BDSM club Indigo that is also included in this book. I liked how Jim taught Paula about D/s relationships and was patient with her apprehension. I did not like how long their separation was and the lack of communication that caused it. He pursued her at the beginning but then let her leave without a conversation. In the end they were both able to get what they needed from their D/s relationship!

Jim and Paula are both police officers and she is against dating other officers. Jim convinces her to give his type of relationship a chance with him in the dominant role. You can see their relationship grow and how it would be in real life. There is some wrap up from the previous book in the series, but you can enjoy this one without reading the other. Jim and Paula have their HEA.

The thing I love about the Club Indigo series is the realism of the characters. They're not billionaire sugar daddies and innocent waifs (which have their place, but aren't usually my cup of tea). Instead we get police officer Paula, whose divorce from another cop led to her moving to another state to escape the fallout. Her refusal to go out with her fellow officers have led many to speculate that she's either frigid or a lesbian. She limits herself to one night stands and under NO circumstances will she ever, ever date another cop.

Police officer Jim Cagney has liked Paula for a while, and when they hook up after their friends' wedding, he's hoping for more. But Paula doesn't understand about BDSM (which he practices), won't date another cop, and doesn't want to date a younger man. These are all the kinds of real-life dilemmas that a woman in Paula's situation would have. He's persistent, but not overly pushy, trying to overcome her resolves. However, when Jim is hurt, she abandons her resolve to stay by his side.

Paula and Jim are both police officers with tough jobs and a lot of dedication to it. They meet and start an affair that involves some aspects of dominance and submission, but she is much less interested in it than he is. Through the help of friends at Club Indigo, a BDSM club, and a series of events related to their work as police officers, Paula gradually comes around to understand the relationship and her love for Jim – but it takes time as she is very uncertain that it can work – in part because of her issues about control, and also because he is 8 years younger than she is. He is strong and decisive – she is less so but gradually comes around and realizes the value of the relationship to both of them.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Can We Make it Work?

Kansas City Police Officer Paula Stone swears she will never date another cop again. She has been divorced for several years now since her husband couldn't handle her success as a decorated police officer.

Jim Cagney is in the drug unit and in the group of the youngest detectives, and he is ready to move on now. Since it has nearly been an entire year since he released his last submissive. He also has lots of baggage, two tours to Iraq, five years in the military and only been back to Kansas City for six years.

Paula starts to appreciate Jim more and more but can she submit to him and live this kind of lifestyle? Will she give him a chance? Can they find a way they both can be happy for the rest of their lives?

Appreciated is a wonderful book! While it is the 3rd book in the series it can be read as a standalone. That being said, this story made me want to go back and read the series from the beginning. Paula and Jim have chemistry that sizzles off the pages. The author addresses the age difference and how many people look at an older woman with a younger man different than the reverse situation. The storyline kept my attention from the start and the pages turning until the very end. There was some action but not as much as I expected. Throughout the story the author gives a wonderful view of someone starting to enter and live the lifestyle with a detailed view. Overall I loved the story and look forward to the next book in the series. I highly recommend this book for a great 5 star read!

Fast paced action packed story. The Hero is a strong Alpha male who knows what is needed and when. The heroine is strong feisty and sweet and not sure what she wants. She is not looking for a relationship especially with a younger coworker. Their friends try to help and show her all the great sides to the lifestyle. He wants more she does not. Can he break through the walls she has eritected is she able to follow him? Will there be more than coworkers who shared one hot night? Get the book and find out! The plot grabs you and keeps you turning the pages to see who does what and when. If you like your stories filled with steamy hot action and sexy scences this is for you. Go get it you will love it.

Since this is book 3 in the series, & I've read (& enjoyed) the others, I wanted to read this book even though the blurb didn't really grab me. I'm pleased to say that I'm surprised by how much I enjoyed it. This story focuses on Paula & the younger Jim, both characters that have been introduced in the previous books. I just loved the dynamic between these 2 characters right from the start. I liked that the story takes place over time & isn't just an instalove. I also really loved the smaller plot line involving James & Laura from book 1. I will admit - there were tears. I can't see myself getting sick of this author anytime soon.

This is my first time reading this author and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. For a change this is am older woman and a younger male. The male, Jim wants his co-worker Paula to be his sub, she knows nothing about the lifestyle. This leads to some interesting scenes as he educates Paula about what he expects from a Dom/sub relationship. These two have wonderful chemistry but they also have very demanding jobs as both are police officers, added to that Paula has some trust issues and you have a wonderful story to read!

Ice cream or ice queen?
Paula and Jim’s story was interesting both are police officers and both are dedicated to their job. Yet both have some interest in dominance and submission. Paula feeling about the issue was mixed and there is the fact that Jim is younger and they work together. What I like is how the author wrote the growth of the character she has allows the characters time to develop excellent writing. This was a very engaging and entertaining book I really liked it. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it. Oh, I loved the prologue for adored!

This is the first book I've read of this series. I love a story with a strong alpha male and a submissive woman who can hold her own. Jim and Paula added just the right combination of BDSM romance and steamy sex. I'll have to go back and meet the other couples that were in this story. Why people think age makes a difference is beyond me. Usually it's an older male with a younger women. This time it was switched. Loved the dynamics. Paula is known as Haagen Dazs because the officers in her squad thinks she's cold or gay. She is older than Jim, she is insecure in their relationship, she is new to BDSM but a natural submissive. Jim is a patient younger man who knows what he wants in a relationship, he is a Dom, he recognizes the submissive in Paula. I love how Jim guides Paula into accepting him and accepting his lifestyle. A good romance with drama.

This is a really good story that goes a long way into explaining BDSM to beginners who know little or nothing about the lifestyle. it is a dip into the water so to speak. The story itself is a good one. A novice with no knowledge of BDSM gets involved with a man in the lifestyle and starts to learn all about it. Plus we get a glimpse into both their lives as police officers. really interesting.

A dominant alpha geek who also happens to be a police detective? Where do I get one of my own? I love, more than words can say, that Jim is a not-so-closeted nerd. The number of Tolkien references made the geek-girl in me “squee!” in delight. Do I even need to say that I adored Jim? I liked Paula. I loved the amount of growth we see in her character throughout the course of the book, but I didn’t always love ‘her’. It might partly explain why she and Laura are good friends, because Paula managed to hit a bunch of the same hot buttons, and managed to press a few new ones too. She’s opinionated and judgmental. She’s not very open in any aspect of her life. She takes unnecessary risks with her own safety. And the woman really can’t have an open, honest conversation unless she’s backed into a corner to do it. However, by the end she and Jim are able to overcome most of those obstacles. My favorite moment in the whole book has got to be the final scene we see in the precinct. I was howling with laughter over how that whole thing played out.

This is book three of the Club Indigo series. You don't have to read the first two books to enjoy this one, but this book is built upon the others and to enjoy the series the most, you should read the others as well.

This is Jim and Paula's story. Paula is very vanilla and Jim is a Dom who is also a Master. They spend one night together after a wedding and Jim would like a relationship with Paula, but he wants it on his terms. Paula is submissive, but has no real experience or desire for this lifestyle other than what she has been exposed to by her friends. She agrees to try the lifestyle.

This book does a great job explaining the lifestyle as Jim educates Paula. And, of course, we continue to visit the relationships from the first two books. I give this book 5 stars and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

Appreciated is the third book of the Club Indigo series. Each book can be enjoyed as a stand-alone read, but I would recommend to read the books in order because there are recurring characters.

This book is about Paula and Jim who are both police officers. Jim is a Dom and Paula, who made friends at Club Indigo during an investigation in a former book, learns that she actually might enjoy BDSM when Jim is the one teaching her. I liked them together, they did have great chemistry. And I also enjoyed meeting all the other couples again.

The Comprimise!

Detective Paula had become friendly with some of her clients from different cases who were involved in BDSM. She couldnt see the attraction herself, why would a woman subject herself to being less or a Slave. Then she went to a Wedding and went home with Detective Jim, who made love to her that night so beautifully. Waking up at his place in the morning was not so great, she snuck out without waking Jim. As a Dom he was not happy. Really enjoyed this story, hope theres more.

Interconnected stand-alone Romance with HEA

The Club Indigo journey continues with Paula and Jim, but we also get updates on former events. It shows the BDSM lifestyle in ‘real life’, with a couple working through difficulties and (common) everyday events.
And from the looks of it, there are more stories to be told, the next one being Sonja. To be honest, she wasn’t my favorite person in Trapped, but she certainly grown on me in Trusted so I’m looking forward to her story.

Excellent

Loved the storyline; great characters, well-developed. Every sub-storyline was equally well-defined. Family, love, hot sex, BDSM. Yep, has it all. Waiting for Sonja and book Four.

Very Appreciated...

I have enjoyed reading Karen Nappa’s Club Indigo series as the characters seem to be quite relatable and down to earth..
Paula is a police detective and she has rules about dating colleagues so avoids them at all cost but when a hot one night of sex with Jim (who is also a cop) after a friend’s wedding, has Paula running.
Jim has admired Paula for a longtime so after that unforgettable night he knows he doesn’t want to let her go. So when he suggests a short term relationship they come to and agreement with a bit of give and take on both sides.
I love that this has a lot of openness and communication between the characters and that you get to keep in touch with those other characters from the other books plus the new characters who will hopefully get their story too...

Pleasantly surprised

Three books in and I can’t put them down!! This series is so well constructed in detail and character! Love the fact that these characters have some years under there belts!! My one complaint has to be the car choices :) I mean really do they have to be so “Vanilla”?! :)

Welcome back to Club Indigo and Paula and Jim’s story. This was a very informative story about the BDSM D/s lifestyle and how these two come together to make it work for them. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters as well as revisiting the Club and all their friends. A very good read! 🔥🔥🔥

This series just gets better and better!

Jim and Paula are both cops. He's a Dom looking for a sub. She's a strong woman who's not familiar to the lifestyle he's proposing and refuses to believe she's a submissive. They have a relationship with more twists than a ride at World's of Fun. Loads of great sex, exciting cop stories, and a frightening explosion. Wonderful story that continues the series.
