It was all going so well for Nick Angriff and the 7th Cavalry… until it wasn’t.
When Angriff awakened in a world where America no longer existed, he vowed to resurrect his beloved country. Put in command of Operation Overtime and all U.S. forces in the post-American world, he assumed that everyone under his command wanted the same thing.
But he was wrong. And now the forces arrayed against him have the power to crush freedom once and for all.
With all of the twists, turns, deceptions, and action you’ve come to expect from a series that one reviewer called “the best I've ever read,” Standing Before Hell’s Gate begins the Showdown Trilogy, where Nick confronts his enemies in a final fight for control of Operation Overtime, while the rebirth of the American Republic hangs in the balance.

The great general can't even properly secure his base.

For me this volume in the series began poorly with this introduction: "The Devil looked down with a snarl and a frown As I stood before Hell’s gate; “Where have you been, my wayward friend? You’re very, very late.” “Now fall to your knees and worship me, “Give the Devil his due; “Belief in me will set you free, “Denial will bring your doom.” Oscar O’Connor, from “Standing Before Hell’s Gate”
I could find no reference to Oscar O'Connor in a quick web search.
General Thomas Steeple reminds me of Dr. Zachary Smith in the original Lost in Space TV series. Completely untrustworthy, selfish and a danger to all so long as he lives. Almost every week my combat veteran father scoffed at the show and said words to the effect that sensible people would have already killed him. They should have arranged a fatal accident for Smith in that old tv series and the same, or a shot while escaping incident, for General Steeple. Neither the base, the nation nor individuals are safe so long as he is alive. Particularly if the base is going to continue to have such awful security that a small team including Chinese soldiers can just waltz in and free Steeple. The security issue is ridiculous. They already know about enemies within and the existence of entrances not in their records. Any competent commander would have strong perimeter and internal security including roving patrols. Spoils the entire book for me.
SPOILERS: In addition to the scurrilous traitor Steeple, watch out for the Chinese, the Sevens, Györgi Rosos (obviously George Soros) and his red riders aka red necks (Terrible nick name. That term is taken and has no meaning which would apply to Rosos' thugs). Might keep an eye out for big foot and possible space aliens as well. Yes Area 51 is alive, secured and still mysterious.
Book four in this series. Once again General Angriff has been betrayed, the traitorous General Steeple has once again regained control of the American forces. His leadership will surely lead to America's demise. Not all of General Angriff 's men have sworn alligence to General Steeple. The battle for survival continues. Non stop action! This is another excellent read in this series. Enjoyed immensely!
What I thought was the final volume, is not. In a glimpse of the future, this volume is referenced as the beginning of the “Showdown Trilogy”. This implies there are two more books to come. While this volume is just as interesting as the prior ones, this story focuses more on the original intentions of the two bases “Operation Overtime” and “Operation Comeback”, it’s visionary General Steeples, and the power struggle between General Steeples and General Angriff. This part of the tale may not be as exciting as the prior battles between The Last Brigade, the Chinese, the GR, and the Islamic cult but it does provide the missing background on General Steeples and what his role in the tale is and/or what it was to be. It also lays the groundwork for the newly introduced Showdown Trilogy. It’s still a great story when taken all together. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Mr Webb has put together 4 books (so far) with much different storyline. I have lived in AZ for over 50 years and also spent 30+ years in or embedded with US military. He has done his research well.
I wont go into details of story, I'll just say it is well written. He produced some very interesting characters and a great storyline.
If you enjoy good military action stories, you might want to consider these. I highly recommend tgem.
Great story, lots of twists, not a linear plot but something worth reading. Might need to read it again with so much going on. Can’t wait for the next one. I have read most of the authors fiction work, might try the non fiction next.
This has been an entertaining series that I've enjoyed reading. The author has created a near-future world that is plausible and interesting to think about, and his characters get better and better. I look forward to future editions.
Outstanding book and story. Characters you can relate to if you have a military background. Read all 4 books Nd the 2 short stories in the series. Can't wait for #5.
Well I finished up book 4, outstanding read now I have to wait for the next installment. The fast paced action continued right through to the very end. Excellent read, can't wait to see where General Angriff goes next.
The book says book one and at the end the narrator said book one and it should have been four due to this I had to pull up the sight and see if I was wrong it shows the next book is number five. Yes it was good but it was very dry the story was flat and the characters were flat also. Most if the time I wondered if another person wrote this and said he was William Alan Web. Book one to three kept you on the edge of your seat this book put you in the bed wanting to take a nap. I hope the next book five will get back to the way the story was told in the first three books exciting, rough and tough and let do it attitude book four was a total failure BIG TIME!!!!!
This whole series is a tour d'force of political, military, historical and economics. Like the other books in the series my only complaint is that it actually drags you so deeply into the story all you want to do is keep reading. I have to pull myself away to get anything else done. The characters are well developed, the action fast paced and the military details just feel right. I highly recommend this book and the whole series But you have to start at the beginning with the first book.
Very enjoyable series. Action packed with some good plot elements and characters remaining in character for the most part. Not sure how many are planned for the series. This actually has good elements for a multi-series where side stories could create entire side series. Overall, looking forward to resolution of main conflicts presented in this volume. Heading for book 5 now.
Taunt twists and turns. Just when you think you've figured it out it goes a completely different direction. Start reading early or you'll be up all night. READ THIS SERIES!
I always enjoy a plot that allows the a bad guy appear to win. It all always fun to find out how the hero overcomes and wins. I recommend this entire series to anyone who likes fast moving action.
Exciting, surprising and the action is fantastic! I think the characters are believable and the story just keeps getting better. Cannot wait for next installment!
Things are looking terrible for Saint Nick with his opposing American General now in charge and working to appease the enemy rather than oppose them. Still, many groups are caught in the middle as Nick seems to have disappeared. I am looking forward to the next episode.
I enjoyed the trilogy that kicked this off. An interesting post-apocalyptic scenario where the US has fallen and been taken over by a variety of tribes/bad guys/survivors. Luckily an entire US Battalion with weapons and equipment has been put into cryogenic sleep to come back when needed to save what remains of the US. And the original trilogy gave us an interesting scenario, plenty of action and interesting characters and I did enjoy it. This one less so, far too many groups of bad guys and a story that felt a little far-fetched in how easily the commander of the good guys is usurped. And in trying to paint to big a picture of the threats, the author has forgotten some of the character elements that made the original books enjoyable. So this felt too much like it was over busy but still a “holding” book.
If you like action, you’ll love Standing before hell’s gate. Wild and woolly characters, and one heck of a story line. don’t miss this book!
Willam Alan Webb has done it again with aa rapid-paced, thriller-driller! Impossible to put this book down. Once again He’s left us begging for more, and book 5 in the series is an absolute necessity.
Webb has done it again with the 4th in his adventure thriller series, "Standing Before Hell's Gate". Like the previous books, he develops a complex set of threats, brings the reader almost to the brink of resolution, and then, BANG, we have to wait until book 5 to get all the issues addressed, the battles completed, and the personal relationships resolved. Couldn't put this one down.
My least favorite book of the series so far. Too many characters, too many locations- it's difficult to still care about the characters. The scene in the library was just too much.
