I read this last night before starting a new romance, and it was VERY VERY C U T E ⋆。‧˚ʚ🍒ɞ˚‧。⋆

Now that I know it has a sequel I AM MORE EXCITED AND LOVE IT MORE ACTUALLY lmao. I really thought it was a cute one-shot, but it left me a bit like it could have more you know? We kinda get a happy-for-now ending and I like them but I do love me a happily-ever-after ending more :') I just saw that there is a sequel *aaah* I'm so happy because we totally need a volume where these two are a couple!!! AND WE WILL <3 (it'll come out in december so it's still a bit far away but it's okay).

I love when you have a character who is kinda closed off and doesn't talk a lot and everyone thinks they hate them but in reality this character is shy and has a hard time expressing their feelings AND THIS IS BASICALLY KANEDA IN THIS MANGA. Yanase thinks his junior hates him and doesn't want to work with him but no, what's happening is that Kaneda is such a huge fan of Yanase and lowkey has a crush on him. He blushes 1000% every time Yanase touches him or tells him something good and it's so adorable to see. The mangaka draws beautifully these scenes with the blushing, the sparkles, and the "oh?" moments.

This was a sweet, soft office romance between two men who share a love for CG design. One has become jaded, while the other is still in the early stages of discovering his passion. There's lot of blushing and moments of encouragement with one spicy scene at the end. My only real issue with this is how rushed the end felt. The time jump was jarring, and left me with several unanswered questions. Even still, this was a nice read with some extra nice character art and themes.

I think this boiled down to me not liking the MC. I found him annoying and not flirty when I think he was intended to be flirty. He came off like an insecure kid, not some veteran in the field he worked in. Which would be fine if it wasn't a romance story. He leaned too heavily on the love interest and it came off kinda icky. This new mentee idolized him for so long and he kinda uses that in his favor to get over his own demons and then throws the kid a bone by saying wait for me while I go away for a year? It feels kinda gross. Yanase doesn't even seem to like Kaneda that much outside of him hyping up this man child with low self esteem and being good at his job. The chemistry was never build. The romance angle just felt very off.

I liked the idea behind this one, but it turned out incredibly bland. There was absolutely zero chemistry between the main characters.

The concept is cute: 20-something (I forget his exact age) Kaneda becomes a CG designer and manages to get his entry-level position being trained by his hero, Yanase. Yanase worked for a major design studio (?) in Canada (?) for five years (?) and ended up coming back to Japan to work at a friend's company because his passion for the field had gotten drained by the realities of working in that field. All the question marks are because I didn't really understand the timelines; if Kaneda got interested in CG and went to school specifically because he'd read a bunch of magazine articles about Yanase's incredible work, after seeing that work in a popular movie, wouldn't much more than 5 years had passed? But who knows.

Anyway, I really resonate with the idea of losing the passion for your craft because of overwork, unreasonable expectations, and decisions imposed on you by clients who stifle your creative drive. I think it's all sadly pretty common in creative fields, and I know animators and designers work incredibly long hours, putting their health at risk, with very little real to show for it. That's why that timeline is unreasonable to me; a CG designer isn't going to show up in that many magazines unless he's really, really huge? And that just wasn't conveyed very well in this story.

I did like that Yanase is shown to be openly bisexual; he channeled a lot of his unhappiness in Canada into sleeping with lots of different people, so that set things up nicely for a possible relationship with tsundere Kaneda, who's blunt and standoffish with Yanase because he's secretly overwhelmed by getting to be around him.

But...that only lasts for like. One chapter? Then they all go out drinking, Kaneda tells Yanase how much he admires him, and Yanase kisses him. Which. I'm not objecting to workplace or boss/subordinate romances at all, but the imbalanced power dynamic here did kind of...not work for me. Mostly because there was no build up at all. It wasn't actually even indicated at this point...or at any point in this volume...that Kaneda was particularly into Yanase in a romantic way.

When they have a conversation about it later and Kaneda says he doesn't really know what he's feeling, I thought oh okay this could be interesting. It'll be a story about starting from a place of admiration that develops into romantic feelings.

But none of that happens. Kaneda just starts blurting out that he's decided he does love Yanase, and Yanase is into having someone like him that much, so when he goes back to Canada for work, Kaneda not only goes with him but moves in with him and then suddenly they're having sex?

I'm just. What?

And there are apparently two more volumes after this, which makes the pacing of this one completely nonsensical. What is going to happen during two additional books? Where do we go from here? I'm kind of curious, but I also suspect it'll just be...boring.

There simply isn't enough development for either character or for the interesting themes in this story. And the parts about project deadlines and deliverables that change on a whim and require additional exhausting overtime work just depressed me, honestly.

A bummer. I wanted to like this one, but I even set it down for several days halfway through because I got so bored I'd thought maybe I just wasn't in the right mood for it. The pacing gets worse as it goes on and the characters don't develop at all. So a skip for the rest I guess, unless I eventually get it from a library.

There's nothing bad about this. It just lacked a little something. It was sweet and wholesome, though.

Yanase is a veteran CG designer who's been assigned to mentor Kaneda, one of two new hires. Although Yanase is skilled, confident, and generally friendly and easy to get along with, he has no idea how to deal with Kaneda, who does his work well enough but behaves so coldly that Yanase is convinced the guy hates him.

In reality, Kaneda idolizes Yanase, the person who inspired him to become a CG designer in the first place. He's so determined not to be an embarrassing fanboy that he doesn't realize how he comes across to Yanase.

As the two of them work together more on a big new project, Yanase gradually begins to understand his trainee more. Even as Kaneda's enthusiasm for the work reawakens Yanase's own enjoyment, it bothers him that Kaneda is putting him on a pedestal.

Ugh, I needed this to either be a longer volume or a two-volume thing. The seeds for something really good were there, but there wasn't enough time and space for it to grow.

Yanase felt familiar to me, and I realized partway through the volume that the character he reminded me of was Yuri on Ice's Victor Nikiforov. They were both talented professionals, highly respected veterans in their fields, but with hidden struggles related to their careers. Both of them had their joy for their work renewed by younger mentees.

Victor and Yuri had 12 episodes to get to know each other - Yanase and Kaneda, unfortunately, only had 150+ pages. Yanase was a great character - in comparison, Kaneda was much less fleshed out. I really wanted to see more of both of them. I especially wanted Kaneda to have more of an on-page chance to show that he was learning to think of Yanase as a real person and not just his unapproachable CG designer idol. Presumably they had plenty of time to get closer and more comfortable with each other during the time between chapter 5 and the bonus chapter (one would hope, since the bonus chapter is the volume's sex scene), but I needed more of that on-page. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I'd have traded the sex scene for more "Yanase and Kaneda getting to know each other."

I've seen this referred to as "volume 1" in couple places, but the volume itself doesn't say it. If there really is more to this, I'll absolutely read it if it gets released in English. On its own, this volume isn't quite enough, to a painful degree.

Extras:

One page of full-color artwork.

Wow the first time I've written an actual review in ages, but there is a reason.
I read this because I saw the drama like... 2 months ago and I read on MyDramaList that the show was nothing like the original manga. So I wasn't sure if I'd read it but ultimately decided to try it.

Now I'm in two minds because I did like how the drama did have a focus on the actual work of CG artists and doing things like getting reference images and the conflicts between the artists and the clients. But it felt too drawn out and the relationship between Yanase and Kaneda was just incredibly frustrating. The drama also massively twinkified Kaneda, which I'm not against. However there was so much unnecessary fluff and boredom in the drama, and Benji just existing in general. The drama also included the whole drama about
That being said, I felt like the manga could have been dragged out by a few more chapters, if not a whole volume because the manga just felt very rushed.

Ultimately, if given the choice between reading this and watching the drama I would pick this. Not only because it is quicker, despite how it should have been longer, but also just because the drama just annoyed me so much I do sometimes wish I had dropped it.
And yes, I know about Brush Up. I got this specifically because I bought volume 1 of Brush Up in Forbidden Planet when I went to London the weekend before last. The drama "adapted" this volume, not the sequel.

I'm a little torn on the rating for this.
I liked the premise, and the art was quite nice for the most part. The story was cute, but it felt like it needed more fleshing out. I feel like it could have had some really interesting parts to it, with Kanada's secret idol worship of Yanase, and Yanase's creativity being crushed by the industry. I also liked all of the insights into the industry that the author provided.
Apparently there are more volumes which I will want to read, and perhaps with those I'll come back and up the rating to 5.

Cute, short, with gorgeous art.

The art might be my favorite part -- Yanase's character design was right up my alley, and Kaneda was super cute too. And they were fairly likable characters as well. I liked Kaneda being very direct and open with his affections and Yanase's spikes of self doubt and Kaneda seeing Yanase for who he really is and his ability to remind Yanase of who he is...

but I don't think there was enough space to really do this story justice. Maybe it's because I recently read Ogeretsu Tanaka's Daisy Jealousy , which covers very similar themes of self doubt, perceived inadequacy, and losing a sense of what made you once love your job, but I know this story could have been better if it was longer and more time was given to flushing out Yanase's issues (opposed to just dropping them on the reader) and really building the relationship between Yanase and Kaneda which... kind of comes out of nowhere? Like don't get me wrong I am a fundanshi to the core and I was reading this with my glasses on, but I still kind of got to the end and was wondering how exactly their relationship had got to that point, because outside of the random, unnecessary kiss, I did not much of a romantic spark between them. Yeah, Yanase was often blushing around Kaneda and Kaneda is obviously obsessed with him as his own personal idol, but it still didn't really feel like romantic love. It just felt... platonic, oddly enough. Sure, it was cute, but there wasn't much depth or substance from a romance perspective.

I see that this volume has a sequel though, and I hope in that sequel the mangaka is given more room to flesh out the relationship between Yanase and Kaneda.

Tosi söpö aikuisten työmaailmaan sijoittuva BL-manga! Tosi kiva piirrostyyli.

Why I read it: I think I picked this one to round out a shopping cart, no special reason for it.

Thoughts: It was cute, very slice-of-life/self-actualisation/low drama style. I really liked the larger story: the romantic leads are CG designers, one is an older man who burned out while working abroad and thinks he's lost his passion and his spark, and the other is a younger man who idolises the older man's work and falls in love with him. It's a story about an industry I've never read a manga (or novel/novella) about, so it was cool to learn about it. I also liked the pretty serious angle of having a career in a field you're passionate about, being mismanaged, burning out, then trying to resurrect your passion while simultaneously mentoring newcomers into the career path you feel tied to but not in love with anymore. They're topics with a lot of depth and potential and relatability.

However, the consequence of the grounded, serious backstory is that the romance didn't really have enough time or page numbers to develop properly, so it feels unfortunately abbreviated. I say "unfortunately" because I found it hard to believe that Kaneda's feelings weren't just a result of the intense admiration he had for his mentor, and the volume is pretty short so there was no time to really examine where admiration turned into love. And that works the other way around, too: I don't know why Yanase would fall in love with Kaneda so quickly either. They're both nice people and they end up looking up to each other for their own reasons, but there was no room in the manga to show anything but the admiration and support they have for each other, so the switch from working-side-by-side to "wait I also love you" was too abrupt.

Would I read more: No. I know there's...sequels? Follow-ups? But that won't fix it for me. I would have really loved it if this manga was longer -- a sort of Bakuman but about the CG design industry and also gay. That would have been great.

Would I reread it: No.

In the mood for an office romance between a senior and his junior? Shinta Harekawa brings us this cute romance in a 3D artist’s workspace!

The workspace was done and explained well. It shines. The mangaka did their research on the topic and it shows. I also loved how they took time to put their relationship into perspective: love, or adoration.

This was marketed as a “spicy office romance,” but I digress. The scene is 5 pages in the end as a bonus. I’d call it fluffy, sweet, and steamy—but potato, potahto. I’d rather they had left the spicy scene for a future volume. That time could’ve gone into connecting the final two chapters and tied the bow on that last plot point. Your mileage may vary with structuring and how quickly things pivot. The pacing was great, but it’s a short volume, so things happen fast!

Who is this manga for
This one is a good choice for manga fans looking for something a little more lighthearted to read between heavier reads. Quick and easy oneshot! It’s steamy, but it gets spicy in the second volume.

I was giggling and kicking my feet while reading this manga. This was really cute, and I love the character dynamic of pairing. They really gave me this very soft tsundere and a kind of cinnamon roll characters.

Other than that, I enjoyed that it did not stray away from the animator plot, I really love this plot concept. It's really amazing to see how passionate these people are with their job despite the deadlines of those project and any other conflict that they face.

Furthermore, the romance did well here. I would say this is quite a medium burn pace of the romance and a really genuine affection and admiration for each other, which I did enjoy following through.

I will also not forget that bunos chapter at the end 👌🤚🏽

Overall, this was a great read. Another fave this month ♥️ Thank you so much, Edelweiss and Yen Press, for the e-arc opportunity ❤️

Wow this was so cute!! Loved all the blushing faces and while the interacting wasn't as "natural" as other titles, I really did enjoy seeing the two together. Wish there had been more relationship progression, as it was, I felt them moving from admiration to "love" was sudden. Also, it was very technical and I think that's pretty cool. If you're into animating and CG and just digital art, I think the feeling of being lost (want to have fun vs. job) is relatable

I see there's a second volume so maybe the lovey dovey junk will be there 😏

This was a cute read, but I was a bit confused about the pace.

The new intern is in awe of his senpai and reacts the total opposite in front of him. Feelings start building and bam, his senpai goes away and they go from LD to him also moving there. And then the random inserted sex scene?! If this is a standalone, okay, but it seems that there are more coming out so I would've preferred a slower pace of them getting together and building the relationship.

Overall it was a cute and quick read, but I just wanted more.

Thanks Edelweiss for the DRC!

This one was so beautiful!
We have Yanase, a guy who was turn down when he tried all of him to prove himself as a good professional, and now is a shadow of who he is.
And Kaneda, a boy who finally meet the God of his career. And he will never let his God be turned down, even for himself.

It's a good story, about follow yours dreams and never give up. After all, if something goes wrong you still would have another chance to come better!

Thank you to Edelweiss and Yen Press for the opportunity to read and review this manga. This story is one that is really adorable and interesting especially with the romance and the industry that it discusses (Computer Graphics) I loved learning about the industry and what our characters both learned from it. However, I feel like one character overpowered the other in perspective and story. Because of these points, I have to give this a 3.5 out of 5 stars

Enjoyable and very basic read. I wanna try watching the live action TV series now.
That said, I did like the art and the fact that we follow adults in a work environment - some of the work stuff was the most interesting plot points :P
I would have wished for a little more focus on building the romance, it felt like an afterthought. This slowbuild is better suitet for series with at least two volumes.

I'm a sucker for the tough frosty but really is a soft teddy bear type!

Sometimes office romance stories lose me because they either go too into detail about what they do or it's SO vague that you're left wondering the whole time what they do ...this story actually did a pretty good job at balancing actual work aspects as well as heart pounding romance scenes. Characters felt well fleshed out and the designs, art style, and writing style were on point! Plus all the cute chibi's!
