Avery Shaw #3

Buried Leads

Rate this book
Journalists are supposed to report the news, not be it. For Avery Shaw, though, that's easier said than done.

Avery has spent the last month on her boss' list -- you know the one -- and she can't figure out a way to get off it. When a missing persons case involving a wealthy mother in the northern suburbs surfaces, Avery figures the best way to get back in his good graces is break the story of the year.

There's just a few problems standing in her way. First off, she's being stalked online -- and it's starting to make her life difficult. She's also decided to actually start dating the hot pawnshop owner, Eliot, who saved her life a few weeks back. That sounds good in theory, but she's constantly crossing paths with her ex-boyfriend and that tends to make things uncomfortable (to say the least).

When you compound that with the fact that this missing persons case is more than it appears -- and the office tool has been assigned to the story with her -- Avery manages to get in over her head. Again.

Avery is sure that she can work things out to her advantage -- as long as she doesn't die in the pursuit of yet another story in which she manages to get personally These characters are sarcastic and snarky -- and they do tend to swear when things get out of hand.

When I was a kid, I was torn between whether or not I was going to grow up and be the Incredible Hulk or Wonder Woman. I flirted with being a Jedi Knight for awhile, but I wasn't up for the intense travel associated with the gig. In my teens, I settled on being a writer -- although I had no idea the effort that would entail.
Not only am I a writer now, but I'm a writer in several different mediums. I'm a longtime newspaper reporter, an avid reader and a voracious science fiction fanatic.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Omg!! This was such a great book. I read it in one setting. The character development is great, the mystery and the touch of a romance development. This was better than the first two. I am definitely going to read the next one in the series.

Avery Shaw is not a conventional character. She's pretty selfish and a smart mouth but I frickin love her. I was getting tired of leads who are flawless. She does have a tendency to think of how things will affect her and I do hope that at some point she shows a few signs of personal growth.

I need more Avery! And some handsome, protective men sure wont hurt things :)

Avery is on her boss's bad list, and she is doing everything she can to get off of it. However, when a woman goes missing and she realizes that the police are hiding things, she will do everything in her power to discover the truth. But her new boyfriend might have some things to say about that, and so does her ex-boyfriend who is a cop.

This story just getting and better every book. I adore Avery now. Yes, she's selfish, and most things revolve around her, but there's also something else about her that you just can't help but love. I also love who she got with as well. They are a great couple, and I look forward to more from them.

I thought this book was really good. It had a great mystery, lots of laughs, and some drama in between all of that as well. I look forward to more.

I enjoyed this book. I think Avery Shaw is growing on me and I didn't find her quiet as annoying as in book one and two. Now if only the author can get the balance between mystery and family life this could be a good series. This book contained a little bit to much family life for me and while entertaining and often funny it didn't really have anything to do with the mystery, which is why I listen to books. I did enjoy it and listened to the end but the mystery got lost in squabbles. Squabbles is the only word for it, as Avery has a hunky and capable boyfriend but still get jealous and resorts to make calling with the ex's new girlfriend. The story could have also done with a few more suspects but I am still off to start the next book in the series to see what other trouble Avery can get into.
The police call a press conference when a mother disappears and Avery is assigned the job of covering the case for the local newspaper. The case seems strange right from the start and Avery is soon getting the police's way as she tries to find out what happened to the lady. And if she is even alive.
I like the narrator, although at times she makes the main character sound whiny when I don't think she is meant to be. On the whole it is a good performance.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I’m having a hard time with this series. I like the author’s Mystic Caravan, Aisling Grimlock, and Death Gate series’s a lot. The character of Landon killed the Wicked Witch of the Midwest series for me (100% rude Neanderthal). This series is the author’s first series so the character of Avery has the same career as Bay (WWOTM), is as rude as Thistle (WWOTM), Aisling Grimlock, Zoe who I just met in a Death Gate crossover, and several other strong female characters. There is a fine line between snarkiness and disrespectful rudeness; I don’t find any humor in the latter.

The author also has some kind of fixation of being kissed on the corner of the mouth. I cringe every time I read that, which is in every book, several times.

So why the three stars and not two? Because I like the way the author writes (except for the above). The mysteries are revealed in a way that draws me in and keeps me reading.

Unique angle

I liked the way this one started with everyone actually upset with a protagonist that does some pretty terrible things. Most of the time people forget the awful choices by the time the next book comes out because they're so smitten or whatever but I appreciate the way the author keeps it grounded on reality. The second person is more prominent in this installment. It's an interesting choice and pretty unique which i can also appreciate
Some improved dialogue would help kove the narrative more smoothly but this is definitely showing a level of growth I like to see in a flawed character.

Avery called it right at the beginning when she said the husband killed his wife. Then the question, “How?” Avery said he cut her up into pieces. Yup.

Avery went and got herself kidnapped again, too. Poor girl. This time she actually didn’t act stupid to get herself into the situation. It was a surprise attack in the least obvious place.

She also invested in her cousin’s dream, so hopefully that all pans out and doesn’t cause Lexie to spiral due to a failure.

Onto book 4 now - Shot Off the Presses

These books are fun, I'm listening to them while I'm working and it's making that easier.

There is a problem though, the mistakes and errors have got through any checks and there are so many where the reader makes a mistake, catches it and repeats the phrase. Both the error and the correction have been kept in the file. The reader is also very staccato when narrating males, it's like Captain James T Kirk had loads of clones

Just what I wanted.

This was a fun story where you know where it’s going (for the most part), but it’s still entertaining and you don’t feel disappointed that you knew who did it way before the end. Interesting mystery, loved the interactions between Avery, Eliot and Jake. Hoping Jake can actually pull that stick out of his rump at some point in the future though.

Another great read in the series!

Another great read in the series! We see more depth between Avery and Lexie and Derek as more of the lifetime bond between the 3 cousins is shown. We see Elliot and Avery grow as well as Avery and Jake grow too. I won't spoil it and let you know which one she chooses tho!

Someone is stalking Avery. Eliot, the guy she's interested in, meets her family and she and Eliot take their relationship to the next level.

Then there's her cousin Lexie who is out of rehab and is going to stay with her for a while. Something goes really, really wrong for Avery, though, and there's a question as to whether or not she's run out of luck.

Another decent story in the series.

Great Read!

A hilarious and intense mystery. The characters of this series are absolutely over-the-top, and completely believable at the same time. I thoroughly enjoy reading all of Lee's books.

Avery Shaw is starting to grow on me. Only took me 3 books to start to like her goofiness. Although most of this book was about her and her family not her reporter job. I think you could have put the crime and investigations into one chapter it was still a good read.

Avery Shaw

Avery Shaw may not be for everyone but I love her. She strong, opinated, sassy, and has a crazy family that she loves and is loyal to. If you haven't read one of her mysteries, try it you'll be in for a surprise how enjoyable the mystery is.

So funny yet sweet

I love this book in every way. Avery is still snarky (more so than the last book!) And the author didn’t let the plot get in the way of the funny lines. It’s so nice to read a character based book. Going onto the next one right now

I can't believe the mischief Avery finds herself in. She is always running head long into trouble. But the 3 men in her life keep her as safe as they can. How much more trouble can Avery find?
