Miho Obana ( 小花美穂, born April 26, 1970) is a shōjo manga artist born in Tokyo, Japan.
She began her manga career as an assistant to Momoko Sakura, creator of Chibi Maruko-chan. She debuted in 1990 with the (one-shot manga) Mado no Mukō, which was published in the autumn 1990 issue of Ribon Bikkuri. Soon, stories from her started appearing in Ribon Original and in the regular Ribon magazine too.
Other notable manga by Miho Obana include Kodomo no Omocha (10 volumes, for which she won the Kodansha Manga Award for shōjo in 1998; the official English title is Kodocha), Partner, (3 volumes) and Andante (3 volumes). Partner is especially noted for its dark, mature, and almost disturbing tone, which is very rare in a Ribon series.
Her most recent manga is Honey Bitter, which has run in Cookie since February 2004. Also in 2004, she made a foray into the world of josei manga, writing several manga for the josei magazine Chorus. She has been on maternity leave for the past year, but will be returning soon, as Honey Bitter is expected to start up again in the Dec. 26 issue of Cookie.
Other works include Mizu no Yakata; a spin-off of Kodocha, Neko no Shima, Pochi, Setsunai ne, and Shiranami no Gensō.

This manga series has been delivering all kinds of tropes and issues that made me feel all sorts of emotions. I am blown away by Miho Obana`s realistic, youthful..but still dark reality of a world that has all these characters in it. She literally explores everything and it just..blew my mind. Sometimes i was not even sure if this manga series even are allowed for children to read because really adult issues are taken up, like childbirth, incest, psychological trauma and disease etc. In mids of this we have two amazing main characters in the carefree and spirited Sana Kurata and the mean, arrogant but very broken Akito Hayama. These two...ahhhh they have my heart. I laughed, smiled and cried with these two. Their love-story is incredible in how utterly selfless and strong it was despite them being so young. The first volume is my favourite, but all 10 volumes of this series were awesome reads.

Continua a sognare. I bambini possono farlo.

Placa i ricordi amari, concede l'oblio.

that ... took a very different turn that what I had expected from a 'light romance.' this manga tackles a handful of heavy topics, very playfully even, and i thought these people (in the story) just weren't taking it seriously enough !

content warnings (for those that wants to read this but don't know what i'm talking about when i say 'heavy topics') : explicit mention of domestic abuse, mention of lolita complex (in this day and age, it's basically pedophilia), mention of oedipus complex (a 12 year old said this btw), an arc with a character who's suicidal, depression, mention of suicide, off-page death, sexual harassment jokes (verbal and physical), romantic scenes that you may have liked in the past but maybe not like anymore (kabedon scenes, abrupt hand pulling/touching, sudden kiss, etc.)

there may be more but I think these are more ... apparent to me? in my perspective at least so take it as you will, if you are considering reading this series.

this was a very heartfelt manga series, definitely light in romance and innocent but not in the same time???

in short, this series is about : kids that grows up too fast emotionally for their own good. most may not even have a very healthy childhood, and all of them need therapists and basically, healing.

the romance : hmm,, it was good. Hayama, in my opinion, was a great character and counter-part to Sana. Their dynamic were hilarious and their road to friendship and of course, past the friendship into a romantic relationship was wholesome to say the least. As for the side characters, their romance and what not, it was entertaining and all of them are distinguishable and easy to remember individually, so that was exciting.

the plot : i can tell that the author kind of wrapped the series a little bit too ... rushed? it ended up abruptly, though. and i know that there's another series, i think, which is a continuation but i don't know if i'm going to pick that up anytime soon since the artstyle is a lot different than this one.

the art style : very classic 90s shoujo romance style. how the author used panels and expressions was well written and i can see it from the drawings, and it very easy to read aka not confusing at all.

[Read more at my blog, Geeky Reading!]

I’m going to miss this series. It was just so good.

This was such a good ending, too. It was sad and sweet and fitting. There was a lot of crying, some emotional breakthroughs, some very needed conversations. Sana and Akito are just so mature for their age, and so in love. They belong together, forever, because they are completely perfect for each other, and I completely believe that they’d be able to stay together and grow together and help each other through everything. Their relationship just gets me all emotional because I feel so strongly about it.

I’m going to miss each of the characters, actually. Because everyone was so defined, with their own personality and growth.

I’m just going to miss this series so much, and I’m sure it’s one that I could go back to and re-read, solely for Sana and Akito’s relationship. This was an overly sweet, heartwarming, funny, cute, sad story, in such an even mix. It’s definitely one of my favorites.

Kodomo No Omocha rimarrà uno dei miei manga preferiti in assoluto.
Invece, no.

You know a story is enchanting and a must read to suggest when it has been years since the last time you read it and you still yearn to read it again. I for one, have appreciated this entire series since my teen years. The art is great and the tale of Sana is both comical and deeply moving as you learn who she is. I have laughed as much as I have cried for these touching characters and I highly recommend any shojou manga fans whom have yet to read this series, to do so. It is one of my all time favorites and I am once more reading this entire group for at least the 6th time.

oh my god.

i binged this out of boredom today & oh my god.

i got a good vibe from it by hearing the description & at first you think this manga is just like cutesy wutsey typical shoujo vibe BUT GOOODD this was actually kind of really dark if you process all thats happened. like ..... theres themes of adoption, abusive relationships, pedophillia, suicide, homelessness, mental disorders. & its just really now what you think it is from all the cover. esp like the last volume, like that was such a dark volume. & probably one of the darkest that ive read to be honest ....

anyways i think this is pretty character ? driven ? ALL OF THE CHARACTERS ARE WRITTEN SO WELL ??? like they all have distinct personalities & like bits & pieces to relate & stuff & its just very all roundedly written. like you know when you read those books where its like the character isnt even talked about in depth & youre just imagining like this empty canvas at that point. WELL TOTAL OPPOSITE OH MY GOOOOSSSSHHH.

like I DONT EVEN KNOW. you first see hayama go through stuff & youre like okay wow that took a turn. BUT THEN YOU SEE SANA & YOURE LIKE WHAT THE FUCK ??????? cause shes just this cheerful person & you thought she was those like lowkey spoilt but just a really nice kid so it doesnt really matter type of person. & THEN HELL NOOO. that took a turn & you realise she probably has the saddest story ever & its just like WHAT. & so its not like childish concerns, its actual like genuine problems that like ARE SO HARD FOR LIKE CHILDREN LIKE THEM TO DEAL WITH. (the story progresses from them being in year six to year eight).

when they help each other, IM JUST LIKE AWWWWWHH & i feel like tearing up because they genuinely both go through so much ??????

also that one like volume where some shit goes down with komori & you realise whats actually happening. & HES LITERALLY IN THE FOREST CHANTING HAYAMAS NAME WHILST STABBING AT THE GROUND WAITING FOR HIM TO COME WITH A KNIFE & GRINNING. i was liek WHAT THE FUCK. because like this just took so many turns & LIKE WHAT. LIKE I DIDNT EXPECT THAT WHY WAS THAT PANEL SUDDENLY THERE. IT WAS SO CREEPY. LIKE HORROR THEMED.

& I DIDNT EXPECT FOR HIM TO ACTUALLY BE STABEBD IN THE ARM. oh my god that was insane to go through. then boy just put the knife to his heart & told komori he had bad aim.

i did not like fuuka. i did not expect hayama to actually agree to date her. like i knew sooner or later, fuuka was going to like him but other than that LIKE WHAT.

anyways jesus, there were so many plot twists & this is just like unlike anything ive read before.

2.55!

this volume goes even more into the doll face illness, which i didn’t care much for unfortunately. im happy to see sana and hayama together tho ngl, these last few volumes were a bit trying in terms of the plot and development. some plot lines felt unnecessary to me imo and could have been exchanged for other arcs (like more on sana’s career, rei and asako’s relationship, etc.). i was a bit disappointed that we couldn’t follow the characters as they got older or seen a glimpse of them in their 20’s but im not too angry with where we left off.

rei was my favorite character throughout this series (excluding some questionable parts in the beginning lol), w/ the mother being close second. im gonna miss reading abt their shenanigans T^T

The conclusion of Kodacha acts as a part two to what volume 9 started, which is makes sense because of the groundwork that the previous book was setting up. This book too also has only one long chapter instead of several smaller ones like previous volumes. All I can say is that I was emotional by the time I finished the last page. The ending had a sense of inevitable truth about growing up and growing apart, which is a bittersweet and beautiful. While the book ends off light and upbeat enough, there is that sense of wanting more story.

It's okay because Kodacha ended when it needed to, as every series should. Maybe there isn't any more to read but Sana and Akito will live rent free in my head for the adventures I got to read about.

Happy ending I guess? But the happy moments were few far and between! It went from one dramatic moment to the next! I love some good drama but I need some happy moments to balance it out.
I really did love Hayama and Sana together. Their chemistry was fantastic. But besides that, I just didn’t love the series as much as everybody else. It’s fine? Nothing groundbreaking to me.

I would give this series a 3.5/5 stars. If you want a dramatic series about middle school kids, then this is for you!!!

it's a wrap!

Shojo manga from the 90s was simply built differently, feel like they could never get away with the topics the were explored in this series so lightly today.

loved Akito and Sana, they are great characters and I lived to see their growth. would have not minded just a little more happy couple moments after all the pain we had to go trough.

otherwise slightly rushed but still satisfying conclusion to a great series.

love the anime - but the manga, just no. I can't get over how mean her mom is. yeah, there's some goofy stuff in the anime that doesn't seem to fit (and a lot of anime-only stuff, what is up with zenjiro?) but I'll take the anime any day.
