Evan Howard provides a solid and comprehensive overview of spiritual formation in the Protestant, Catholic, and Eastern Orthodox traditions in The Brazos Introduction to Christian Spirituality. In
This was a very broad treatment of Christian spirituality. The breadth of the book is helpful from a certain perspective and leaves one wanting a more biblically founded spirituality from another perspective.
I found this to be a very helpful introduction to spirituality. Although from an evangelical perspective, it includes examples from other traditions. Not the final word but a good starting place with plenty of suggestions for further study.
Howard's book is substantial and at times reads like the textbook it is, with its repetition and schemas, and at times feels too heavily weighted to psychological organization of the material. But, if never a breezy read, this ecumenical (from Orthodox to Quaker, but with a large dose of the evanglical and Catholic in the middle) review of Christian spirituality and the nature of its practice is generous and offers a thoughtful framing of ideas and practices. It offers a large numbers of quotes, has excellent notes, and provides summary, additional references, and activities for spiritual reflection. I found the practical chapters 7-12 on Christian Transformation, Christian Spiritual Formation, The Life of Prayer, The Life of Care, Christian Discernment, and Renewal to be more engaging. It will continue to be a good reference.
