Hidden Hollows #1

Loving the Beast

Rate this book
Can her love tame the beast?

Millie Thornton is moving to Hidden Hollows for a fresh start in the only thing she won in her divorce, her ex-husbands Jaguar. The idillic small town setting is just what she needs to help her heal and start over.

Luke St. Clair is stuck in Hidden Hollows with all the regrets of his past. As the small town sheriff, he spends his days handing out tickets and his nights with his dog, Tick, and his only passion in life, beer and fixing cars.

So when Millie shows up with her optimistic attitude and bad driving, he’s annoyed enough to take notice.

After discovering the truth about Luke’s past, Millie takes it upon herself to fix him. She won’t allow himself to close in on himself just like her father did. Luke is reluctant but with the promise of her Jaguar on the table, he agrees. After all, he’s been able to thwart Hidden Hollows do-gooders before, what makes Millie any different?

Except, she’s not what he expected and the feelings coursing through him were not something he thought he’d ever feel again. If only he could move on from his pain, he just might be able to love her like she deserves.

If you love broken heroes and spunky heroines, you’ll adore Loving the Beast, the first installment of the Hidden Hollows multi-author series.

Welcome to Hidden Hollows.

I've always been a sucker for beauty and the beast kinds of stories. It's my favorite fairytale ever. This one was a cute, quick read that I enjoyed. There were a few things that bugged me and kept me from really loving the book. But, for the most part, it was a fun one. I'm looking forward to reading the other books in this series.

Millie and Luke...these two were pretty fun to watch with all their different interactions. Especially their first couple. I was laughing out loud and trying to figure out how these two were going to reconcile and move past acquaintances.

The author did a great job creating angst between these two and showing their backstories. Then having them work towards building a friendship and making some personal resolutions on how to help the other. Luke was definitely a good broody beast of a man. And Millie was sweet and fun but could definitely give Luke some heartburn with her antics. All good things of course.

These two have some sorrow in their pasts. Some of that sorrow doesn't make it easy to move on and open their hearts. But love can definitely help break down those walls and barriers. And a persistent lady named Millie.

I loved the bakery aspect of the story and was definitely craving some sweet treats throughout this book. I think I need to go bake some now. So just be warned, if you read this, you might find yourself in your kitchen baking, or in your car driving to your local bakery to grab your sweet treat. Or a granola bar. *giggles* You have been warned.

If you're looking for a sweet read, snag a copy and enjoy. And guess what...the epilogue gives a sneak peek at book two. I can't wait! It's gonna be good.

Content: Clean. A moment of peril. Sweet kisses and nothing further.

I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

Romance, clean. Series but stand alone read
Millie and Luke's story is hurting, healing, and sweet. Told from alternating points of view, Millie and Luke both have past hurts that make friendship difficult, and a romance nearly impossible. Luke's gruff exterior, and Millie's happier one combine for a cute retelling of Beauty and the Beast. Cute small town setting and strong side characters made for a fun, clean, romance. One of my favorites in this series.

The story is okay, but I found a lot of typo errors throughout the book very off putting. I also found the authors writing style not really one I liked, but that’s not to say other readers will enjoy reading this book

DNF

Four minutes in and already too many distracting errors. It seems like a promising book, but needs one more pass by an editor.

Luke is the sheriff of the small town Hidden Hollows. He seems to enjoy finding reasons to give tickets to people for speeding and various other infractions. Millie, who's just moved to town to take over the bakery from her aunt, receives 2 tickets within 2 days! One of them on her way into town!! Millie wants to know the story behind the sullen sherrif who hides his face with a cowboy hat (she hates that hat).

When Millie discovers the sad story of Luke's wife's death and how he hasn't been the same since then, she's determined to help "fix" him by helping him get over his grief. Luke doesn't want to be fixed. He says he enjoys his solitary life--enforcing the laws and going home spend time with his dog, and work on cars, but Millie's intent on showing him there's more to life.

On the surface this looked like a story of opposites attract--a sullen sheriff and the happy baker--but looking again it was a story of two people whose hearts had been broken. Millie didn't want Luke to wallow like her father had done after her mother left them. Luke's solitude started out as a way to avoid people telling him how sorry they were about his wife's death but had gone on so long he was forgetting how to interact with people and becoming a recluse. By then it was easier to avoid people than to try to connect with them.

I thought this was a good start to the series. I've read a couple of the other books in the series before this one, so it was nice to see how Millie and Luke got together. I listened to this one through Audible and thought the narrator did a good job with the voices and getting the feelings of each character across. This is a clean romance.

Mille and Luke

Another poor woman who left her cheatin' husband and gets to work at her Aunt's Bakery. Doormat. A very uninspiring, boring woman.

Luke is an Alpha hole cop. He keeps ticketing her for stupid stuff. His wife had died so doormat Millie feels sorry for him and starts chasing him to apologize for what? Nothing! She stalks him to his house. Luke isn't very interesting either. His story: Dead wife.

This book starts out with a bang and a grind- literally. Millie is driving her way to a new life in her cheating ex-husband's car, and enjoying every moment of the gear's destruction whenever she shifts badly. Instead of falling into the "an aunt I never met died and left me a house in a small coastal town" trope, Meyer went with the more plausible story of an aunt who had announced to the family that she would be retiring, and the timing of it being a lifeline for Millie. Hope and possibility are thick in the air, and I couldn't wait for an adventure to begin.

Unfortunately, Millie gets pulled over, and that brings both the character's sunny drive and the entire plot to a screeching halt. I was expecting something fun... or given the title, at least a modern Beauty and the Beast retelling. Instead, I found the book grinding my gears with a female main character who completely lacked substance, and a story that wasn't much better. First, we see Millie simply used to bake with her aunt and knows nothing about running a bakery. I guess it works out because the bakery is really almost a bi-line after Lucinda makes Millie roll out of bed at 5am the day after driving down from New York... essentially, she is a glorified cashier. Another element that gets dropped is the transmission. Or not. I kept waiting for the transmission to actually drop, but that never happens. Millie never explains to Luke why she refuses to treat the car kindly, and the whole thing feels like a missed opportunity. It's just one theme of many that were dropped rather than being brought out to really create character depth for Millie. The same Millie who has known Luke for all of one day when she decides to prod his deepest wounds and force him to heal because "my mom died and it's totally not the same and you don't even know me but I know exactly how you feel right now." Gross.

What grown woman is so hell-bent on forcing a man they barely even know to be their friend?

As for Luke, I actually liked him. He's a much more flushed-out character. I really appreciated his journey from someone who was completely closed-off to someone who has finally healed enough that one spark is all he needs to get out there and just try. Watching him break from his shell was honestly what kept me reading instead of writing the book off as a DNF. The journey is awkward and stiff at first, and not without its bumps, but it is one of growth. If you've been around for any length of time, you know that character growth is the end-all-be-all for me.

I think if Meyer would take the time to develop Millie at least as much as she did Luke, slowed down the story, and added some depth to the whole, then she really might have something here. There's so much potential... but like the gears of a Jaguar, you just can't rip through them and expect it to work.

I first thought this book was going to be based on Beauty and the Beast because of the title. I was pleasantly surprised that it was not. This was an emotional story where both of the main characters touched my heart, but for different reasons. Luke lost his wife, Sheri to cancer and had shut himself off to love and Millie left New York after her divorce. The story made me happy and sad just like Millie and Luke and all that they had been through. I really enjoyed the banter between the two characters and how Luke seemed to have it out for Millie and her jaguar. It also left me smiling and full of hope as they were given a second chance.

I really liked this first book in the Hidden Hollows series and I cannot wait to read the other books. I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.

When Luke meets Millie he has no idea that his life is going to change nearly overnight. Luke is a cranky cop who almost goes out of his way to find reasons to give Millie traffic infraction tickets. But Millie finds out about Luke’s past heart break and decides to declare to Luke that they are friends. But what Luke doesn’t know is that Millie has had her fair share of losses. Her most recent loss being her divorce from her cheating husband. Luke has to decide if he is willing to call a truce with Millie and if he is willing to allow anyone to to be close to him again. This is a sweet clean story about finding healing and love. This relationship seems to build fairly quickly but I know it can happen that way sometimes.

I really loved this book. It was a story of second chance love. Luke St. Clair was a sheriff in the small town of Hidden Hollows. He was sullen and beastly always giving out tickets to those who dared to enter his jurisdiction. He has lost his wife to cancer a few years back and hadn't been able to get over her death. Instead, he chose to live a solitary life with his dog. His life consisted of work as sheriff and tinkering on his Ford Mustang in his garage and his dog, Tick. That was his life until Millie shook up his life.

Millie Thornton was new to town. She had come to Hidden Hollows to take over ownership of the bakery from her aunt, Lucinda, after a nasty divorce. Her ex had cheated on her with her best friend. All she got was his precious Jaguar. Millie received a speeding ticket on her way into to town from Sheriff Luke St. Clair. Then the next day was another ticket for another infraction. Although Millie had experienced great loss in her life, she was determined not to have that define who she was and she wanted to help Sheriff Luke heal from his loss, too. Was the job too hard? Would Luke ever let go and realize that he wasn't responsible for his wife's death? Could he let someone else in and try to love again?

This story was sweet and clean. There was no foul language or descriptive sex and was a wonderful story of love and healing.

I was given an arc copy of this book and I willingly offer my honest review.

'You can't fix a hurting man'

Millie finds out her Aunt is right, which just chaffs her ass - she hates being wrong! She also finds that despite nursing her own broken heart, and her plans to stay single forever, you can fall in love with a hurting man, which terrifies her. Is a hurting man capable of loving again?
Luke knows he is not living, just existing, but he didn't realise what a beast he had become. until he is challenged by Millie, she doesn't back down from his growls or his anger, she growls right back! He finds her adorable, like a scatter brained tornado she whirled in, frustrating and intriguing at the same time, but then he feels the emotion, the guilt hits and he is back to angry and withdrawn.
Watching these two damaged and bruised souls is a little like a train wreck, you can't look away, you can see the danger, the hurt and the inevitable crash. But as they hobble away from the wreckage, they help each other, support each other and finally realise they love each other....even hurting and damaged they can love again and together they will heal....it's just a longer road for some than others!
The first in a multi author Kindle Unlimited series this book introduces you to the residents of Hidden Hollow and they welcome you with open arms, pulling you into the community, making this the beginning of a great series that you will 'need' to read!

💞 Millie and Luke 💞

New to me author! I loved this book...as I devoured it in one sitting!

Millie is escaping NYC and her cheating former husband. She is going to run a family owned bakery in North Carolina. On the drive down, she promises herself she is done with men...and apparently isn’t paying attention to her speed as a very handsome sheriff pulls her over. What was that promise she made to herself?

Luke is a tortured soul, still grieving the death of his beloved wife. He can’t get out from under the continual dark cloud hovering overhead. Until a bright ray of sunshine appears. But does he want to smile again?

Millie wants to move on and Luke is stuck in the past. She is full of optimism despite her circumstances while he is a grumpy young man because of his. These two keep meeting in rather amusing ways imo. Loved how he just couldn’t stay away even though he tried. His inner dialogue about this struggle was pretty funny. There was angst and heartbreak but the eventual outcome was well worth it. Great ending.

This seems like it will be a fun new series. I love small town romances and am excited to read the other books as they come out. Millie and Luke definitely have a different meet cute and the next few encounters as well. As prickly and closed off as Luke was, I was rather surprised by the stories timeline. Millie is a really sweet, but strong willed woman and I admire her strength. Her and Luke go well together and the sparks definitely fly.

Loving the Beast

This was an interesting story about a divorced woman fleeing New York City to Hidden Hollows. Millie was buying her great aunts bakery and she was retiring. Coming into town, Millie was rolling along on hothead highway a little too fast and the Sheriff pulled her over . Well, that’s how she met Luke, not too friendly meeting since he gave her a ticket. Read this, it only gets more interesting.

This was a wonderful, sweet romance, it was clean but you could still feel the passion between them and I loved that (sometimes a clean romance can be lacking in the emotional side, but this one got it sooo right). You feel their pain too, they are both broken and you can see how hard they try to get passed their demons, the struggle is very well portrayed.
A great quick read, maybe best for a cozy winter weekend (although I read it in Spring). I can't wait to invest in the next books in the series.

I had a free copy of this book, but this is my voluntary and honest opinion. Millie Thornton is moving to Hidden Hollows to take over her aunt’s bakery and get away from her ex-husband. Luke St Clair the town sheriff has been grouchy since his wife died, and takes it out on the residents by giving out tickets. He makes life rough for Millie when she arrives, and she decides to befriend him. The plot of this book centers on overcoming grief, making friends and staying positive.

This is a beautiful, emotional story about Millie and Luke. Millie lost her husband to her former best friend. Luke lost his wife to cancer. Luke doesn’t feel like he deserves a happily ever after and Millie is giving up on men. When she moves to Hidden Hollows, the first person she meets is Luke, when he writes her a ticket. Grab your copy and see what happens.

Millie is looking for a new start, after a crappy marriage.
Luke is the law in the little town and Millie is about to help fill the ticket quota for that small town lol..
Millie decides Luke needs a friend. He's resistant at first, but Millie is a pretty determined gal.
A sweet story about defeating the odds, and taking advantage of second chances.
I really enjoyed reading this book.

Letting go

Two hurting and confused people meet in the small town of Hidden Hollows when he (the sheriff) writes her (new baker moving to town) a speeding ticket. Not the typical path to love but somehow Luke and Millie seem to be on the path to love...or maybe not. Great setting and characters along with a heaping serving of insecurities. I'm ready for a return visit!

Clean Romance

Luke and Millie are adorable! He’s the definition of a beast, until Millie came into town. She makes quick work of becoming his friend and I loved how great friends they were! I didn’t love the accident and did tear up a little that he dropped her after that. I loved the intro into the next book though!

Stubborn fool

Millie is getting over her ex husband. She decides to start over with a new job in a new town. She isn't in town five minutes before the sheriff pulls her over. Luke is the sheriff and is hurting from his wife's death three years earlier. He won't open his heart back up again. Can they find a way to work past their individual grief.

Simple short love story

This love story between Millie and Luke began with a speeding ticket. Luke lost his wife and tries to keep everyone away in his grief. Her aunt thinks Millie is trying to make up for the fact that she lost both her parents. A good read with a lot of inner thoughts.

Stilted and boring

If you want to read a B movie try at a love story, here is your chance.
Luke is the grumpy Sheriff, Millie is the new to town baker. Both have pasts that make them think that they are unlovable.

Unfortunately, this is the first book in a six book series. Book two is unavailable. Each book is written by different authors.
