A clever twist on a much-told tale

I liked this exploration of the idea of Cinderella as a boy named Ashton, set in today’s world rather than a Regency era. Some of the modern touches were pretty clever. Unlike an awful, tripe filled story I read recently (still grimacing), the romance / relationship was believable and developed. Ashton - nice name choice - is a genuinely good guy. He’s not annoyingly nice, like some Cinderella iterations. His dad died in an accident. His mother remarries (after getting Ashton’s okay) and later tragically dies of cancer. The stepfather and brothers are evil, more vile and sadistic than the women in the traditional tale, if you can believe that. I was a little surprised that no one noticed what was happening, but it wasn’t so glaring that it took me out of the story. Being in NOLA, there’s some magic involved, including a talking bird, who serves as the fairy godmother. Mix in a voodoo curse and a rougarou (who tragically eats! the bird) and you’ve got an entertaining story. There’s a HEA, with a marriage coming much later, since both of them are just 16. The ending could have been more developed but I left pretty satisfied anyway.

I have really love this reverse version of the classic fairytales Cinderalla set in a modern New-Orleans.

Ashton is force to do every chores his cruel stepfather and stepbrothers ask him to do. The three of them want to make a good impression to the princess of the nearby island kingdom but all Ashton wishes to do is to see Angie, a girl he bump into while doing one of the errants for his stepfather.

But the people of Angie are cursed, and when this one is kidnapped, Ashton will do anything to save her. With the help of a magic talking bird.

Different Twists

This s a very different Cinderella type take in that the Cinderella figure is a sixteen year old boy and it's set in a modern day New Orleans. The magic fits the aura of NOLA, and the ending let's the reader imagine what could come next.
