I’ve always been told stories about the real world, but I haven’t seen it for myself. All I have ever known is pain.
And darkness.
They tell me I have been blind since birth.
When I make my escape, I think freedom is finally within my grasp...
Until I’m captured by the paranormal police for a murder I didn’t commit. Apparently, I have powers—powers I have always suspected myself of having.
Normal people can’t see through other people’s eyes, right?
Thrust into Nightmare Penitentiary, I meet a group of hard, alpha, psychotic inmates who believe I’m the answer to all their prayers. Me? I’m just trying to survive and figure out what it means to live. My new home isn’t just a prison, but a labyrinth with horrors around every corner.
But what if the cost of my life is my freedom? Am I willing to trade one cage for another?
Welcome to Nightmare Penitentiary where you come in handcuffs and leave in a body bag.
This is NOT a bully romance. These men are all hardened criminals and extreme alphas, but they adore their female. Be prepared to enjoy a painfully naïve female main character who slowly grows as the book progresses and a group of psychotic, murderous males. This book contains strong language, sexual situations, and a reverse harem romance.
The plotting on this one is weird. Girl grows up in a compound being tortured her whole life (how old is she, btw?), but is somehow more wise than everyone around her. She is simultaneously super innocent and worldly - she misses obvious references and doesn't recognize basic language but then can pull out colloquialisms, obscure knowledge, and an extensive vocabulary. That kind of character inconsistency is maddening (just like the flinching, shy maid suddenly turning into a "wanton" woman in her words - how does she - the FMC - know that word, you ask? No idea, my friend. No idea.)
I didn't find the characters compelling either; I'm just not interested in finding out what the FMC is or how her relationships develop. The male POV chapters were letdowns for me as well; I'd much rather have the book in 3rd person omniscient then continuously read books where the characters' inner thoughts are just so horribly clichéd.
Finally, there was poor proofreading - words are misused or the wrong words are in sentences (for example, the one I somehow found most cringeworthy was talking about the FMC's nub but the author wrote numb).
Maybe this series is just not for me. I DNF'd the other Nightmare Penitentiary book I read as well. I'm dreading the forthcoming explosion of supernatural prison books, because prison is not sexy, and I think it is wrong to romanticize something that is horrific and traumatic for so many people in the real world.
I often struggle a lot with Katie May's writing; she has a very effusive, flowery style which is alright for the heroine but extremely offputting when I'm in the heroes' POVs. This is one of the only books by her I've managed to finish.
That's a shame, because the premises always sound AMAZING and this one is no different. Nina is a blind girl who can see through other people's eyes; she's sentenced to prison for a murder she didn't commit, where she reunites with her childhood sweetheart and his gang.
One thing that did annoy me is that May's obviously torn about whether to leave this as a standalone or not. It's marketed as one, but there are a lot of loose ends in the ending - not least the fact that by the end, NINA STILL HASN'T HAD SEX WITH A MEMBER OF HER HAREM. What the hell.
I probably wouldn't read the sequel if there does end up being one, but it was alright.
Rating: 3.5 stars Rounded to 4 because I may I have a weird fetish for blind characters.
Blindly Indicted is part of the Paranormal Prison series and a standalone.
While I would consider it a bit long for a one book story, it also felt quite rushed for the depth of the plot. Many parts were barely scratched and Blindly Indicted ended more as a slice of life than any kind of prison story you can think of.
Nevertheless, I did enjoy the book, some moments more than the others, some cute, some fun and some plain cringe worthy. Because if Blindly Indicted does not shine in the plot department, it definitely ranks surprisingly well when it comes to its Mary Sue and the extreme harem worship going on in Nightmare Penitentiary.
Nina was innocent, weak and probably hit too many times in the head. Her way of thinking was just too fucked up by her never ending optimism and kindness to be anything but annoying in the end. Being a punching ball for a psychotic crazy bitch was seen as her strength and telling the cold murderous scary dude he was a good man made her an angel to her boyfriends. It was kinda weird and not at all believable.
But here's the thing. I would probably have hated the story as it been written by anyone else. But Katie May, despite her annoying heroines and pet names, has a way to make her stories come alive and hook you from the very first sentence. Blindly Indicted will definitely not be my favorite read of the year, but I had a nice first lockdown day thanks to it.
So. I'm gonna call it a 3.5 rounded up from the laughs it gave me.
It was a Mary Sue situation 200%, also there is no planned 2nd book from my understanding and it does finish with things left with loose ends. There was also some issues that some RH have when there's a lot of dudes, which is there's just not enough pages to really feel out the relationships with everyone and sometimes people vanish into the background.
I had fun though, not a fan of the ending since it just...felt sooo unfinished. Not a true happy ending, more like a happy for now. The characters made me laugh at times and each were distinctly unique. There was also a lot of cute shit and I live for that.
I only dock points for the ending, a bit of the frustrating mary sue at times but not many, and not enough pages ;)
I would be pretty happy if there was a 2nd book written though since there was just...so much left unanswered for. That doesn't always happen though in real life. But it'd be nice to see the story conclude more happily.
I did really enjoy this story and all of the characters but I also wish some things had been explained with a little more detail. The world could get confusing at times and made it hard to focus on the actual romances going on.
So, I know it says duet but it’s written like standalone so much it’s pouring out of everything, relationships develop too fast and mostly at the same time, little to no world building and overall leaves you wanting more.
Safety first;
Edit i forgot to add ONLY Kai knows of her existence and he is v!
I am gonna count FMC as v because she has only been SA’d in the past because she was locked in this lab called Compound with Kai who is thankfully v as well also 3 other MMCs (Damien Abel and Cain) also have SA past but only one is v other 2 were manwh*res and book starts with Abel and Damien middle of s*x with prison wh*res (that is actually their name I know) granted they don’t know FMC and stop as soon as they saw her,
Rion and Bronson are also have a colorful past they are in prison for a longtime and were not expecting to meet their mate so I guess 🤷♀️ also Rion’s ex OW and the girl Damien was having s*x in the beginning cause troubles cuz they don’t want her no longer.
I think they did share girls before and Damien never touches them while having s*x and he never been kissed, given oral to a girl
But I have to say FMC does get jealous like 2-3 times and I felt bad for her
Lastly her birth mom r*ped her twin mates 💀
Safety Quotes
“Currently, his pants are undone, cock on display, as he fucks one of the prison whores. Their words, not mine. He barely seems aware of the panting girl beneath him, her eyes closed in bliss. As always, Damien’s hands are firmly by his sides, not even touching the girl’s waist. It’s one of his rules: get your cock wet, but nothing else. The girl, Teegan or whatever, begins shouting inarticulate praises as Damien increases his speed. I just barely resist the urge to roll my eyes. She—like so many other females who offer themselves to my gang—probably thinks she’ll be the one to tame his beast. The mere concept is laughable. Damien is a psychopath through and through. If I wasn’t continually benefiting him, I had no doubt he would kill me.”
“You going to let Dam take the reins?” Abel asks dryly. His back is against the wall as a girl kneels before him, sucking him off. While his eyes are fixed firmly on the scene before him, his hands are in her hair, guiding her movements. “He’s going to kill him,” Cain, Abel’s twin (yes, I see the irony) points out. Unlike his brother, there are no girls fawning over him. They learned their lesson the hard way when he practically ripped off their heads. There are two people in my gang the girls know not to touch: me and Cain.”
“ Both Man Whore and No Love hold him back. Yes, those are the names we have coined for the twins. Man Whore... do I really need to explain? The trickster demon has more lovers than I have tattoos on my body, which is fucking saying something. We once joked that his dick is actually a fish that dies if it doesn’t get wet at least twenty times a day. Of course, he hasn’t used one of his playthings in days, not since Nina arrived. The women of the prison have begun to grumble. Hell hath no fury like a woman without cock. Okay, I apologize if that’s sexist, but you haven’t met the women in this prison. They scare me more than their esteemed “king” does. And yes, king was said sarcastically.”
“ I’ve never kissed a girl before. Sure, I’ve fucked them, but I always considered kissing an intimate act between two lovers, one that involves feelings and emotions. It was the one thing Narian never did to me. I thought I was broken, even more so than everyone suspected.”
“ “I’m not a saint, and I never claimed to be one. Before you, I admit, I was with a lot of fucking women and men. I liked sex. A lot. It was just a way to pass time.” “Is that all I am to you?” I whisper as hurt cascades through me. The arms around me tighten, and I rest my head on the twin’s shoulder. “A way to pass time?” “No!” Rion shouts adamantly. “Fuck. No!” Working to moderate his volume, he adds, “The time with you... it was everything. Nina, since I met you, I haven’t been with anyone else, and I don’t want to be with anyone else. You’re it for me, even if I have to share you with these idiots.” He releases a sharp, humorless laugh. “None of us are saints,” adds Bronson quietly. “We all have pasts we’d rather not talk about.” I take a deep breath, knowing that’s true. What happened in the past has to stay in the past. I can’t allow the sins and transgressions of long ago to bury this relationship.”
“Only a few times!” Rion says immediately. “And it didn’t mean anything to me. We would hookup, she would leave, and I would be with someone else an hour later. It was before I met you, of course. Now I’m a one-woman type of man. My heart is yours. My soul is yours. My fists are yours. My dick is yours. My pubic hairs are—”
“She probably thought Rion united our gangs for her,” Damien breaks in vehemently. I suspect he’s glaring at the tattooed shifter. “Fucking hell, Rion. Did you have to fuck everything that moved?” “You’re one to talk,” Rion retorts. “I hear stories about your cock. It’s as cold as the rest of you, capable of freezing a girl’s vagina right off.”
It was so nice! I’m impressed by how fun this book was despite the heavy moments and past flashbacks ( be mindful of the TW) Whenever I expected a scene to be predictable, the author use a reverse uno card on me haha! I was kept on the edge of my seat and I didn’t even saw the time fly! I’ll gladly read more books by this author because I find myself really vibing with her sense of humor, which usually always don’t appeal to me in books, but here I was laughing so much! The characters are really well written as well and the plot is slow and complex but it was exactly my cup of tea 4 ⭐️!
Nina, our Female Main Character, is blind. That, along with so many other facets, make this story a different kind than the normal Paranormal Reverse Harem fare. She gets around her disability (in amazing ways, btw) but the simple fact that she DOES have a disability, well... it speaks volumes, and it's well done.
This story is both simple and complex, offering up a romance backed by a complicated plot orchestrated by nefarious individuals that will most likely make an appearance in other parts of this intertwined universe. Characters we have seen (and loved) before, pop up here, either by mention or presence - though you do NOT have had to read the previous books to understand and enjoy this. It is stand alone, it just fits into an expansive Universe shared by numerous, talented authors.
Over all, this is a great book, with entrancing characters and quite a few 'fist pump' moments. I enjoyed it from start to finish - and I fell in love with the entire bunch of stabby psychos (and they are ALL crazy, don't let them convince you otherwise!)
Pros: ~ Well written. ~ Great characters!!! ~ Appearance of previous characters in this Universe. ~ The Prison is becoming a touch clearer. ~ Damien..... and Rion.... I think I absolutely LOVE these fools. ~ Nina, she's fantastic.
Cons: ~ There are a couple lines that didn't make sense.
Another one bites the dust!!! This book has to be the loonnnngggesstr fucking book in this series... so far 400+ pages ill be honest i dont think it should have been this long.. maybe like 300? But lord it was long. With tons of drama and medium steam.
Nina had a horrible life she was abused, torture shot everything you can think of in this secert compound also i forgot to mention shes blind.. but she has a power for her to see through others eyes.. so she 50/50 blind in my eyes, but she escapes only to be framed for killing someone.
Now she's in Nightmare Penitentiary shes already attacked but saved by a "cat" and is reunited with someone from her past. Now the tension is high since Blade aka Kia is top Dog in this yard along with his Prison gang. Bronson is already head over heels since shes his mate and the other guys feel some sorta connection to her but Damine and Cain do take a step back since they know shes Kia and they all want her Abel is flirty but keeping his guard up. Now they have to protect their girl in this place.
I do love all the guys Abel and Rion are the funish crazy guys, Damine & Cain are the serious ill murder you, Bronson and Kia are the love stuck puppies that are dangerous. As for Nina she was alittle navie and skittish since she was in the compound which is understandable, we also have the mystery in who sent her their.
Ill be honest i was alittle disappointed there was no group sex.. with 6 supernatural guys and not no group sex? Booo!!! Also felt bad that Abel didnt get to have sex with her. :(
Low angst, Slight ow drama, no cheating, slight secondary charas, Drama, sexy times, no virgins
I wish I can get my money back for this book. I only bought it because it has good reviews. This book is just depressing honestly, I don’t mind violence and everything else, but I HATE the part where the main character is so week throughout the whole book. I get that she’s blind, but come on! Even a blind person will put up a fight with all of the abuse.
So this one follows pretty much most of May’s stuff. The fmc has been tortured and abused and some of the guys have past trauma. None of it is graphic and the story itself is largely hurt/comfort. I didn’t realise until Rook was mentioned, it’s a multi author series. For a prison one its sweet. One blind girl doted on by Blade and his inner circle. Multiple POV and various supernaturals. The ending made me laugh. The guys are pretty much psychos and have no problems with punishment and murder. Favourite character was Rion.
I really didn't know what to expect going into this, but I absolutely loved it! Nina was such a different protagonist to so many others in the genre, and not just because of her lack of eyesight. There's a trend in RH to have the badass leading lady who don't need no man but collects them anyway. But Nina had suffered horrific abuse her whole life, and really was dependent on them. They helped her grow and become strong in a non-traditional sense, and it was a welcome change from other books.
Nina was complimented by her guys, who was each a monster in his own way. The difference in personalities, but acceptance amongst them, was so much fun to read. I also loved the setting of the Labyrinth. It added a level of danger to the book as a whole, on top of the prison setting.
I really enjoyed this book. I really wish or hope this will be a series. I would absolutely love to read more about these characters and their world... I didn't really think I would like prison themed books, but I guess I do! Who knew?
The writing wasn't too bad but the author had Nina cowering one moment and admonishing big scary dudes she JUST met. Her complaining when someone cursed was too much. I would think someone in her vulnerable position would be smarter. The sassy mouth thing didn't work for me as the situation didn't call for it. There was insta love on most of the guys part and usually I wouldn't mind but it took the tension out of the story far too early. Also early on in one guy's POV he's going on about consent. I preferred to be showed rather than told. Real sad this didn't work for me as the premise sounded interesting.
Well this was okay. I found that the characters were lacking slightly for me. the world was cool and I loved the life inside the prison as it's so realistic to have the structure and gangs so to say inside. I liked the fact that being in the relationship brought a bit of humanity back to the characters and the inner struggles they all had. Damien is so obsessed with Nina. This part will stay with me...."I want my angel to bathe in the blood of her enemies!" Are you sure that's what she wants?
Wow, just wow! What a story... What a ride! This was a awesome book ... Job well done Katie.. Two thumbs up for you girl.. Yes, I will be a returning customer...
I am not exaggerating when I say I believe you could shave off a good 20 pages of this book if you cut away all the unnecessary, flowery similes. Not that it would do anything for the quality of the writing, but it would be one less things to roll my eyes at.
This book gave me some bad, bad second hand embarrassment. This is the kind of writing I expect from a teenager, not an adult woman with several other titles under her name. The juvenile descriptions of psychotic characters speaks of an author that has no actual experience with an environment where violence is normalized, and so falls back on tropes. Joking about Damien, a murderer, being “stabby” is meant to make the others come off as “crazy but charming” but falls flat, as do all the emotional beats Blindly Indicted tried to hit.
The book tries too hard to portray Nina as an ingénue, but can’t even be consistent about it – at one point she doesn’t understand the term “fuck buddy”, but she can describe herself as “wanton”. Damien is this ridiculous parody of a cold-blooded killer, capable of having sex with a woman without dirtying his clothes, and always ready to stab everyone who isn’t Nina because he is oh-so-crazy. I won’t even try to cover Rion or the twins, but rest assured the bad characterization is not limited to Nina and her harem: the entire prison is populated by lazy clichés (here’s looking at you, Tessa, whose entire character motivation was jealousy over a guy, because of course it was).
The whole book is unimaginative, lazy and pointlessly dramatic. I can remember at least three different times Nina compared a situation to “a broken thing, shattered into a million pieces that she can’t begin to imagine where to start working to fix”. Cain genuinely describes his heart as “shielded by barbed-wire and prickly thorns. Anyone who dares to get close will get stabbed.” but when he realizes he loves Nina, he goes “Maybe the thorns around my heart actually conceal a rose desperate to bloom.” And damn if that isn’t the most middle-school thing I have ever read, and from the hands of a purported adult woman.
This being my first book by Katie May, I’m willing to give her the benefit of the doubt and maybe try another of her books in the future, in the hopes that this was some godawful fluke. I’ll be keeping my expectations low, but my mind open. But then again, at this point there’s nowhere to go but up.
Blindly Indicted is a one of a kind read that sinks into your bones! Katie May was a new author for me and she easily has a new follower! I loved this book so Hard! Blindly Indicted is a part of the Paranormal Prison series and it's another Winner! This book also takes place the majority of the time in Nightmare Penitentiary, in the Labyrinth. This book was Intoxicating and full of thrilling suspense! You fall right into Nina's world, and it's not a nice one. There is some dark content so beware this is a Dark Romance with a capital D. It's a book that grips you from the start and completely consumes you body, mind, and soul! You're dying to put the pieces together and uncover the truth! Nina has a fresh innocence about her and there is so much humor and playfulness! Now, Nina has been through horrible, unimaginable things, she's not your typical female character which is very refreshing! She has serious PTSD which is highly understandable, makes you want to protect her! She is not a weak female she is a survivor! I Loved Nina so much, you connect with her instantly, she latches on to your heart! Her Guys are so very intriguing! This is an RH and you will not be disappointed! Whew, This was one Sexy read that will leave you biting your lip and squeezing your thighs!! I'm still fanning myself! I loved each guy but I did wind up with a favorite! I have to say Mr. Scruffles and Damion take the cake! The Wicked ones entice me and they were deliciously twisted! I really enjoyed this book and I'm looking forward to seeing what other books May has! I'm also very excited for the rest of the Paranormal Prison Romance books. I'm dying to see if someone is going Put that Warden in his place and what our little mouse friend will be up to next. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I picked up this book based on a random recommendation, and I am so glad that I did. Nina is our FMC, and we meet her as she is escaping from the torture she has endured her whole life. She is thrown from one unknown world into another in the form of a supernatural prison. But the place meant to break her brings her hope and life. This story is beautiful and violent. I loved the way the author portrayed Nina. She isn't weak by any means, but she had a vulnerability to her and a light. I loved all of the men who were drawn to her light for different reasons but also only want to protect her. This story had many twists, but more than that, wonderful poignant moments dealing with trauma in a caring way. I can't wait to dive into book two!
"Everyone has a darkness. Some wear it like a badge of honor, while others hide it away."
I don’t know what I can say other than BlindlyIndicted was one of the best book I’ve read. It’s definitely going in my must reread pile. Nina is a strong and sweet fmc who has been through heII and back yet she managed to emerge with all of her light still intact. And the guys? Well they are just flat out hot. I’ve got to admit, I would never have believed I’d love a mage more than a demon, but holy heII, that psychopath Damien has me all kinds of drooling. Don’t question whether or not to read this book, just do it because you’ll kick yourself later for not having read it sooner.
Blindly Indicted is a true stand-alone, so no worries about a cliffhanger ending.
I liked it. I did, but at the same time, it felt like something was off or missing.
I think one thing I found a bit strange was the heroine's voice. She so well-spoken, using words such a malevolent, which I personally have not often heard nor used in casual conversation with any of my friends - all of whom are college or university educated. And yet here we have this girl, who has been locked in a cage all her life, tortured and abused, but somehow she has been able to learn beyond the most basic vocabulary? Seems odd.
Such a great story! The plot flowed nicely and I loved all the characters. I want more though. Please for the love of everything holy do not let this stay as. Stand alone.
There are parts that are dark as heck but it is more flashbacks so it didn’t spike any triggers.
The guys are all amazing. I’m glad there were a few that it wasn’t instalove.
Katie May did an incredible job with this addition to the Paranormal Prison series. Its emotional but with a decent amount of humour thrown in so it's not completely draining to read. I'd definitely read more about Nina and her guys. Excellent job!
Omg omg omg this is amazing if you haven’t read it yet you just must. The storyline is amazing the world building phenomenal and the relationship between the mc and her men amazing.
