Rate this book

The perfect gift for the football-mad kid in your life.

Football is the world's favourite game where there's everything to play for and anything can happen. Like, a dog walking on the pitch in injury time and saving your team from relegation... A goal keeper saving two crucial goals with a broken neck... Or even a game erupting in no man's land between the British and German soldiers during the Christmas Truce.

From great events to the completely unknown and down-right ridiculous, these are the best stories from the beautiful game. Compiled by bestselling author Matt Oldfield, Unbelievable Football will keep young fans entertained for hours.

(Note that I actually read the england version, and that this review will be transferred once the book has been uploaded on netgalley)

This book is far from my usual fiction read as I engaged with the target of getting myself out of a reading slump - but it was actually really interesting. It’s accessible, well explained and written - you don’t have to have a thorough knowledge of the sport to enjoy the read. The authors passion and research shines through on every page; and I appreciate the effort to ensure the lionesses were included with their stories. Just really well written, engaging and educative.

Matt Oldfield's easy-going, gently humorous style is just right for these true stories on soccer. Everything from dogs to disasters is covered, mainly focusing on the English and European leagues, but including lots of World Cup soccer stories for both guys and gals (Women's soccer as well as Men's), and buckets full of determination, true grit and lucky or unlucky chance!

If you like football, read this book. There are so many interesting things you can find out about different football clubs, players and managers, and, if you need some good comebacks to say to your friends if they make fun of your team, you've come to the right place!
