What does a child do to deserve an inheritance of pain and mental illness? Nothing, of course. But the unfairness of life doesn’t prevent the shadows of the father from rolling in to cover a child’s life. Escaping the Shadows is a book of innocent childhood, of baseball games and friends, and the forces beyond a child’s grasp that take those things away. Sometimes unfairness can’t be corrected with fairness. Sometimes time needs to pass to allow the shadows to lighten, not disappear, but to thin and allow some sunlight through. Sometimes the healing passing of time is the only escape.
