Shadowvale #3

The Forgettable Miss French

Rate this book
Shadowvale isn’t your typical small town America. The sun never shines, the gates decide who enters, magic abounds, and every resident bears some kind of curse.
Werewolf Virginia "Ginny" French's curse means no one can remember her. Not even for as long as it takes to ring up her groceries or make her favorite iced coffee. And being that forgettable has turned her life into an incredibly lonely existence. So much so, she's thinking about doing something really wild just to entertain herself.
Werewolf Ezekiel "Easy" Grayle loved his life until he got struck by lightning and lost control of his shifting abilities. It’s led to some uncomfortable situations – and the decision to move to a town where the unpredictable is acceptable.
He didn’t realize just how acceptable until he catches his hot but maybe-crazy neighbor sneaking out of his pool in a barely-there bikini. He’s too busy unpacking to pursue her, but when she comes knocking, all bets are off.
Can a forgettable woman ever find love or is her curse too much for even the most determined man to overcome?

The Forgettable Miss French by Kristen Painter

3rd in the Shadowvale series. Paranormal romance. A town that hides itself to protect its paranormal residents. The gate decides if it will open for you. If you can find it.

I didn’t want to put it down to sleep.
The heroine: A curse that makes everyone forget you as soon as you are out of sight. A lonely existence through no fault of your own. I think it would be very difficult not to be depressed all the time.
The hero: a werewolf that was hit by lightening and not able to control his wolf form. He’s a famous writer. He moves to Shadowvale to hide and hopefully figure how to get rid of his curse.

Maybe the Cursed together can join forces.

werewolf problems Excerpt:
“Problem was he never knew if he was going to end up a wolf or not. Crazy. He’d never realized he was such a mutt until the lightning strike.

Now it was anybody’s guess what he was going to turn into because, apparently, he was cycling through every random bloodline ever introduced into his gene pool. So far, he’d seen himself become a pack’s worth of different wolves, a fox, a coyote, a Siberian husky, and, most curious of all, a beagle.

Whichever one of his relatives was responsible for that indiscretion, they had a lot of explaining to do.
A lot.
It was embarrassing.”

Werewolf Ginny lives in Shadowvale, a place for broken supernaturals. And Ginny certainly is broken. She was cursed years ago by a spell that now leaves people unable to remember her after they leave her presence. Sort of like 50 First Dates, but in reverse. So Ginny is a stranger in town, even though she’s lived there for years. She doesn’t have to worry about what she says, because no one will remember it. She makes friends with a Loch Ness Monster (?) named Seymour and feeds it blackberry pies (that was pretty much the most adorable thing ever) but the lake monster is her only friend except for her grandmother and a tank full of goldfish. Until someone moves into the neighbor’s house where she used to sneak over and use the pool. And it turns out maybe he’s the one guy who might remember her. This was a cute cozy paranormal romance. I enjoyed both Ginny and Easy and their quest to break their respective curses.

This was my favourite book in the series right from the start, obviously not because of what the main character had to go through but because of how she is. I think the author has outdone herself in this installment of the series, not only because of the incredible world she has created but the incredible idea for this particular story.
The main character is Ginny, a wolf shifter, who suffers from a curse that makes her forgettable to everyone she meets in minutes after they part. She leads an incredibly lonely existence, and does not have anyone apart from her aunt, who also remembers her only occasionally, and Seymour, an interesting lake creature, who is just as adorable as he is scary. Nevertheless, her positive attitude and unbeatable spirit are inspiring to read. I loved her from the beginning to the end.
Then there is Easy, a writer and a wolf shifter with a shifting curse, who had to leave the mundane world due to his unpredictable shifting tendencies. He is amazing. And that's all I'm going to say, you have to meet that character on your own. Okay, I will add that he is like a dream perfect guy in every way.
What I also loved about this story is that the author expands the world, shows more of Shadowvale, while still making sure to include the regular town's hot spots and recurring side characters. And with the nature of Shadowvale and its infinite possibilities to extend and accommodate its inhabitants, the limit is only the author's imagination.
The idea of the story and the flawless execution of it, was even better that anticipated. I am not going to get into the details of the plot, but it was by far my favourite so far. I loved this story and I love this series, and I sincerely hope that there will be more stories to come, as I would love to read them.
The books do not necessarily be read in order bit I find it better. Reading order is: The Trouble With Witches (Shadowvale #1), The Vampire's Cursed Kiss (Shadowvale, #2), and The Forgettable Miss French (Shadowvale #3).

The Forgettable Miss French, Kristen Painter’s Third in her Shadowvale Series.

What can I say about Shadowvale? If you’ve experienced Ms. Painter’s Nocturne Falls, you can’t help but love it, and you will absolutely enjoy Shadowvale as well. Shadowvale is the place that doesn’t exist, but if you’re different, have a curse or two, maybe Supernatural in some way, it will take you in and make you at home.

Miss French is cursed into being unforgettable. For ten years. Imagine always having to explain yourself in public? New in town? Passing through? Who ordered this?

Easy was struck by lightning, and since then, not only can he not always control when he shifts, he also can’t control what he shifts into. Yorkers are adorable, but not so much when you are a Werewolf.

When the two meet, passion sizzles as sparks fly, and there’s no telling what will happen next. Another incredible 5 star read.

The titular Miss Virginia French ("Ginny") is the subject of a terrible curse, which causes everyone to forget they know her a few minutes after meeting her. As in, the waitress in a restaurant doesn't remember taking her order when she walks by the table a few minutes later. This, obviously, leaves Ginny unable to make any kind of connection, except with her grandmother, who is immune to the curse but suffering from Alzheimer's. Werewolf Ezekiel "Easy" Grayle is also under a curse -- he's unable to shift into his normal wolf form, and instead shifts into other wolves, foxes and dogs (even a Yorkie, once). But for whatever reason, he can remember Ginny. Together, they search for a mysterious book of magic that could cure both of their curses.

The Forgettable Miss French gets off to a slow start, but once it kicks into high gear it's quite entertaining. Poor Easy's curse, while notably traumatic for him, is hilarious to watch, especially when Ginny has to rescue his were-Yorkie self from an accidental public shift. There's real pathos to the characters' dilemmas, and their interaction seem very genuine. The relationship between Ginny and her ailing grandmother is especially poignant.

The Forgettable Miss French is the third book in the Shadowvale series by Kristen Painter. I feel that you could read this prior to the other two books without really missing anything; however, it will spoil some of the town's charm if you haven't read the other two books.
I absolutely loved the premise of this book. Ginny has lived the last 10 years of her life with only her aunt able to remember her, and then because of a stroke affecting her memory, not even that is guaranteed.
When her new neighbor, Easy, moves in Ginny is in for more than she bargained for.
The story was very enjoyable, and the reference to my favorite breed of dogs, corgis, made me love the book even more. I would have loved for an actual corgi, but the reference was a good start.
I read the book in one sitting and didn't want to put it down. I highly recommend this book for reading.

Me pareció genial y entretenido.

Wow!! Can I just say this is by far my favorite addition to the Shadowvale series as of yet?! Ginny and Easy are just awesome for each other! They had a great chemistry that made the whole story just flow for me!
I seriously couldn’t put the book down, I had to know what would happen next! And there are so many twists!! I just wish there were more, and obviously can’t wait for the next addition to the series!!

Third in the Shadowvale paranormal romance series and revolving around the citizens of a small, hidden, town in the Carolinas. The couple focus is on Ginny French and Easy Grayle, a pair of werewolves who become neighbors.

My Take
The Forgettable Miss French is a sad tale with a happy ending. I know you won’t be surprised when I say this, as Painter’s tales usually have an HEA.

It’s the thought of what Ginny had to suffer through and following her life that will make you want to cry — it is especially helpful that Painter uses third person dual protagonist point-of-view, so we learn how bad it is for Ginny. Especially when she keeps being chased from the local pack for being a “strange” wolf. I can see, however, why she’s considering bank robbery as a hobby, lol.

As for Easy, I find his curse funny, frustrating — and embarrassing. His is the other POV. The things he learns about his ancestors! I do like that Painter has created him as a regular guy who has his fantasies about becoming famous and enjoying big-city life.

I did have to laugh when Ginny decides she can do anything she likes — because no one will remember her, and she lays one on her new neighbor, Easy. Only . . . lol . . .

I do think Gwen is ridiculous in her thinking their family is cursed. Although I don’t blame her for being afraid.

It’s a sweet story that is more complex than I’d’ve thought with all sorts of conflicts and considerations.

The Story
Easy is hoping Shadowvale will be a good refuge for someone with his curse. He’s on deadline to finish his book and then attend that movie premiere. Until his editor calls with a new deadline!

It doesn’t help that his encounters with his new neighbor are so distracting when he catches her sneaking out of his pool in a barely-there bikini and then that kiss!

It becomes a meeting of curses and too much sharing.

The Characters
Virginia “Ginny” French, a werewolf, is a graphic designer whom no one can remember. The only other, besides her aunt who sometimes remembered her, is Seymour, the lake monster. Bob, Comet, and Sparky are Ginny’s goldfish. Aunt Gwen, the woman (and werewolf) who raised Ginny after her parents were killed (Robert was Gwen’s brother), lives at Emerald Manor in an assisted living wing. Lucas Cartwright, another werewolf and a retired cop, also lives at Emerald Manor and is Gwen’s gentleman friend.

Ezekiel Zachariah “Easy” Grayle, a.k.a. EZ, is a former Army Ranger and a New York Times bestselling author with a movie already in production. He’s also a werewolf with a problem. Tomahawk Jones, supersoldier, is the protagonist of Easy’s thriller book series. Long Lone Howl is his current work-in-progress. John is his editor at Redstone Press. Raina is his agent. Malachai and Caleb are his brothers.

Shadowvale is . . .
. . . a small town in the Carolinas where the sun never shines, the gates decide who enters, and every resident bears a curse. The town was created by Amelia Marchand, a countess, a witch, and an abandoned woman. Thoreau is Amelia’s companion tiger. Becket is Amelia’s majordomo and warden.

Deacon Evermore, a raven shifter who can take on others’ curses, is the town’s peacekeeper. He’s engaged to Emeranth “Em” Greer, Amelia’s niece ( The Trouble With Witches , 1) and the new barista at the Black Horse Bakery. His brothers include Shepherd, who is the fire chief, and Bishop, who runs a tree trimming service. Gracie is their young sister who works from home as an accountant.

Rico Martinez is the alpha of the local pack. Oluf Erikson, a Viking berserker, is a time refugee. Shops include Deja Brew, the Green Grocer market, Club 42 is a jazz club, Spellbound, the Creamatorium makes the best ice cream, Philly’s is a great hole-in-the-wall, and Fritzi’s Pizza. Five Bells is a pub with no shortage of men and where Lyra is a server, Jerry Washington owns the dry cleaners. I really, really want to shop at The Chocolate Dragon with its mouthwatering displays and chocolates is owned by Charlie Ashborne, a dragon shifter. Flora’s Blooms is a flower shop where Carena works.

Nasha Black runs the Black Horse Bakery (she’s the daughter of Famine, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse) where only the coffee has a price. Stella Kittridge owns Stella’s Bargain Bin and does she ever have the bargains! Della Kittridge is her twin sister and sometimes helps out.

A legendary book is hidden in Dark Acres in the Enchanted Forest. Droxes are winged foxes related to dragons while meowls are a blend of cat and owl. Lylianna, a nymph, is the captain of the grove guard. Nightingale Park is treasured as it's the only place where the sun does shine. Pam is the too-interested realtor who sold Easy his house. The sellers had moved after their son, Ryan, outgrew his curse. The Freeman kids, also werewolves, need a sharp, short lesson in manners. Shauna Perez had been Easy’s love interest in high school. Smith and Sons Bakery is one of the clues Ginny uses with her Aunt Gwen. Arnold Fuller had sold insurance and once dated Aunt Gwen.

The Cover and Title
The cover is bright with its fuchsia background of mist and dark sky with the bright fuchsia orbs of varying sizes scattered along the left and right. The gates to Shadowvale are golden with the series info incorporated into the gate — the number in a right curl. The head of a wolf with blue eyes is emerging from the center of the gate, giving you a hint of its main characters. At the top is an info blurb in purple with the author’s name immediately below it in white. Below the wolf, at the bottom of the cover, is the title in white and outlined in deep fuchsia.

The title truly is about The Forgettable Miss French.

The Forgettable Miss French – Shadowvale Book 3

I continue to love the enchanting world of Shadowvale, where magic and mystery intertwine effortlessly. In this instalment, Kristen Painter introduces Ginny French, a werewolf cursed to be forgotten, adding yet another layer of intrigue to this captivating series.

The concept of Ginny’s curse is fascinating, and Painter cleverly parallels it with the effects of Alzheimer’s when a loved one begins to forget. This thoughtful touch added emotional depth to the story.

I was fully immersed in this book, enjoying the romance—even if it developed a little too quickly, as has been the pattern so far. Shadowvale seems filled with hunky men and beautiful women who fall for each other almost instantly, but beyond that, the story’s exploration of loneliness and longing is heartfelt and compelling.

Painter’s vivid descriptions and engaging characters make this a delightful addition to the series, keeping readers invested in Shadowvale’s magical world.

Four stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟

And now, on to Book 4!

2020 bk 13. 2020 bk 249. The third of a fun series. It hasn't been a series that discussed any serious subjects and was mostly about romance. This one was different from the other two - still the romance, still the paranormal, but the discussion of what happens when people, including loved ones, cannot remember who you are from one day from the next is described in all of its terrifying, quiet, bewildering, 'what can I do" existence. This is and isn't about alzheimers. Our main character has a curse, but there are situations where a person can be forgotten or easily ignored in life. How much attention do we pay to the people around us - both the closest and those on the periphery. How many people are lonely because they are forgotten - there are tons according to a variety of different studies. This book is a reminder that we need to pay attention. Thank you Kristen Painter for dealing with this topic in such a way that it sticks with you.

This was so creatively written. We have huge lake monsters like Seymour which reminds me of little shop of horrors. Loved it! The guy was insanely thoughtful and romantic. Ginny is amazing and I just couldn’t let go of her story.

The Forgettable Miss French is the third book in the Shadowvale series from Kristen Painter and in my humble opinion, a marked improvement over book 1 and 2. Ms Painters books have always been a guilty pleasure read for me. Something I can pick up as a bit of a palette cleanser after reading something more intense. Knowing that I'll get some fun, romance and a happily ever after. Whilst I struggled with 'The Trouble With Witches' (Book 1) and 'The Vampire's Cursed Kiss' (Book 2) I finally felt like we were back on track with this entry.

As per the rest of the series, The Forgettable Miss French takes place in Shadowvale. A town that is not only hidden from the sun (perfect for vampires) but also hidden from ordinary humans. The town provides a haven for humans and supernatural creatures alike, with the majority suffering from some form or curse, be it benign or terrifying. If you have read Ms Painter's other series, Nocturne Falls, there are a lot of the same elements between the books but as yet there has been no cross-over.

Our main protagonists in this entry are Virginia 'Ginny' French and Ezekiel 'Easy' Grayle, both who are werewolves. Whilst both are cursed, this is a good example of the two extremes of a curse's severity. On the one hand you have Easy who was struck by lightning and now has issues with his shifting ability. His shifter shape is unpredictable, all canine, but no consistency. On top of this, his shifting can be triggered without his control, even a photograph of the moon is enough to set him off. His curse, whilst annoying and unpredictable, isn't as severe as Ginny's. Poor Ginny has one of the worst curses that we have been introduced to through this series. Ginny touched a mirror in a haunted plantation house and ever since, no one can remember her. For example, she can order something at a café and by the time the waiter comes back with her food or beverage they don't remember Ginny. I can't imagine how horrible and isolating this would be. There are only two individuals that remember Ginny. Her Aunt, who is suffering from the effects of a stroke, and has days where she also doesn't remember Ginny and Seymour a friendly lake monster. Despite her curse, Ginny has remained positive, warm, friendly and I found her such a joy to read about.

The story starts when Easy moves to Shadowvale and right next door to our forgettable Miss French. Except, too him she is not so forgettable! This is the first time that Ginny has had someone remember her in 10 years! Imagine not having anyone remember you in such a long time yet you haven't let yourself become warped or twisted. Ginny is obviously overjoyed to find someone who remembers her and the fact that she is attracted to Easy is a bonus. They start off as friends even though sparks are flying, and I find their friendship grows very believably, if a little condensed, although that is par for the course with Ms Painters books. There are hiccups and setbacks along the way, but I love the resolution of these issues and the fact that the relationship is not as one-sided as the previous books. Both Ginny and Easy work at being friends. They don't take things for granted. They don't blame the other for any failings. They are a genuine team.

Overall, I really enjoyed the story arch. Yes, it is very much an insta-love story and if I remember correctly takes place over about a 2-week period. The ending to me could have been wrapped up a little quicker, I did find the last couple of chapters drag but overall, I really enjoyed this entry and recommend it to any who have enjoyed Kristen Painters Nocturne Fall series.

Last note, I have said this in my other reviews, but I have both read and listened to the audio version of this story. I really wish Ms Painter had chosen a different narrator for the Shadowvale series. B.J. Harrison, the narrator, does a great job but he is the narrator for Ms Painter's Nocturne Falls series and I find it a little confusing at times when you get the same voices.

I think this is my favourite book of the series. I enjoyed seeing the town from Ginny's perspective. While the possibility of reading her life of crime would be interesting, I do like the romance. She's quite shy, and I like the fact she didn't suddenly become confident with people forgetting her.

I found their meeting funny, especially with her comments and the kiss. I really liked them as a couple. I was heartbroken for her after Easy got a shock. The plot is mainly their curses, its a running idea throughout the series to sign the book.

Will I continue the series? I tried, but I couldn't get into it.

I hate picking up a new Painter book

I pick it up and start to read. By the end of the second chapter I am hooked. I lose sleep reading her books. I sometimes stay up all night 🌙. By 5 am I only have a couple chapters left. So, why not? I can't stop now right? A few hours later I'm happy everyone is happy but I'm sad I have to wait for the next one to come out. Seriously, the books are entertaining and we'll written. Just the right amount of sappy, juicy info to keep me interested. Best endorsement...I read her books three times as fast an other writers.

Okay, Kristen, please explain this sorcery. I just finished Ginny's book and every single one has blown my mind. They are incredible beyond words. I keep thinking the current one I'm reading is my favorite, but then I read the next and I'm even more mind blown. How is that possible?

I loved the story building and the relationship building and how things just came together. And your endings always make me cry.

Spoiler alert

Proposals always make me tear up and I loved this one so much. It was perfect and then some!

Outstanding Series!

This author has created a town that you feel like you’ve stepped into while reading! I could imagine the shops and taste the ice cream and baked goods and coffee and picture the lake and the woods and the bookshop! Characters easy to love and enjoy spending time with! This book is unforgettable and I want to read everything this author has written! I also wish this was a place we could relocate to where everyone regardless of their differences lives in peace together! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Two werewolves are struggling to overcome the effects of curses that have have been accidentally placed on them. Ginny French can never be remembered by anyone seconds after meeting them. Her life is a combination of “Groundhog Day” and “Fifty First Dates.” Easy Gayle is a writer/werewolf who has lost his ability to control his shape shifting. They run into one another in Shadowvale the mysterious town of paranormal beings where the sun never shines, the fates decide who enters and everyone is cursed. Can they overcome the curses and find true love?

I really didn't expect to like this, the 3rd book in the Shadowvale series, but felt compelled to read it after completing the 1st 2. Actually? It was my favorite of the 3! The curse of Miss French is so creative and compelling. While the characters are strong, there is something gentle in the author's presentation of the story. No gratuitous violence, sex or suspense. Just a good, fun, immersive story. Loved it!

Ginny was cursed, to be forgettable.

Ginny was in college when she touched a haunted mirror, causing her to be cursed. The curse makes her forgettable once a person is away from her. Her new neighbor is smoking hot. Darn her luck, or is it? He's got a curse himself to deal with. He's going to do his best to not forget such a beautiful woman! Easy is an author, his notes become something he can build upon.

Paranormal romance in a town full of the cursed. It was kind of forgettable to me. Not much happens till the end. It was mostly internal dialogue, which I quickly skimmed. Ginny is cursed so that people can never remember her, her new next door neighbor Easy shifts unpredictably and sometimes gives off sparks, and Ginny's Aunt Gwen has memory problems due to a stroke. That last "curse" seems more like a mundane medical issue, but whatever. It's fantasy.

A memorable love story

Though Ginny may have been cursed to be forgotten by the residents of Shadowvale, its newest citizen didn't seem to have that problem. Maybe because of one curse to another? Either way, finding your true love despite those obstacles while eventually breaking said curses makes for a very memorable love story. And one all the residents of Shadowvale will l come to know.

I like that we get a different view of Shadowvale. Poor miss French has lived there for a long time. It only comes about that someone notices her when it’s her new neighbor. I think it’s hysterical. All the puns they were put on the neighbor being an author. Was particularly horrible about this curse for her is that she is a werewolf without a pack, because nobody recognizes her. I do enjoy how they overcome her curse with Reminders.

These books are such light fluffy fun with just a tinge of tension. I liked the first book, loved the second, and liked this one. It was a bit drawn out in parts and the relationship, at first, was a bit YA.
But I like a bit of light fluffy fun as a palate cleanser sometimes, and for books that are basically romances, I like them which is something I cannot say about a lot of romance books. The paranormal urban setting certainly helps as I find it both charming and interesting.

Ginny’s story -the unremembered girl

Sweet, intense, and with some very unexpected turns. I don’t want to give anything away, because this is a meticulously crafted tale. I will just mention that there are dogs and wolves, a motorcycle and a loving aunt. And so much more. I hope you enjoy this love story (and so much more) as much as I did. Oh, did I forget to mention the teeny-tiny pink bikini?

Fantastic read. Loved all three in this series so far and hoping for more. What happens when a town forgets you it gets sad and lonely. Ginny has learnt to deal with being forgettable until she lets someone new. Great love story with ups and downs in true Kristen fashion. A must read
